  • Special districts spend more public money than all city governments combined. That's odd considering most of us don't know they exist.

They will rise up and overthrow the governments of the world, replacing it with their own global order. A very self-aware global order, however, and therefore the most successful form of government thus far.

It really inspired me years ago, they’re bold enough to give a damn about the work that need be done. A sense of decorum even when no one was watching 💗
It’s also concerned me though that there were just people out there artificially controlling people’s bills/state taxes and some refuse to even be open about their process. Am I glad they just wrapped the special districts where I am and people are elected into the many state offices that ensure things are calculated properly 😮‍💨. No mini kings pulling the wool over people’s eyes and price gouging the public

The two guys holding their meeting according to Robert’s Rules even though no one is present are really absolute heroes. Not following proper procedure because you think no one cares is the worst mistake you can make. You made the effort to view their meeting video so you caught them doing something right. So often boards neglect proper order and eventually get into trouble.

John & the people at Last Week Tonight: Thanks for uploading your segments on YT. I can no longer afford cable due to a genetic disability, and it's getting harder for me to learn about many things going on in our society. You are able to take important and complicated matters and explain them straightforward and fairly simple way. And to do it with great humor is a wonderful bonus & helps me to remember the issue. You've helped me finalize decisions when it comes to such things as voting and in other areas of life. Thanks for educating people of things that really do matter. Long live Last Week Tonight!

I used to hang out in the middle of the street and play hacky sack with my friend at like 3-5 AM (neither of us would be high or drunk). We lived in a small town and nobody and nothing was around. We noticed the lights rarely seemed to change one night, and we went around hopping on where cars pull up to stop and discovered we could make them change. That silly fact came in handy one time. We were kicking the bag around and a guy pulled up just as a car pulled up, the light sat red for a really long time, like we figured it would change in a minute or so but it didn't. Once we realized it wasn't gonna change, my friend and I went to work hopping on the spot we knew made the light change. He waved at us appreciatingly. He likely would've waited at that red light for a very long time if we hadn't been there.

I love John Oliver. A lot. I also work for a CPA firm that does accounting for Special Districts in Colorado. If you want to know about the districts to which you are paying taxes, look on your property tax statement from your county. You get one of those every year. If you're unsure what a district does, look it up. Call the county treasurer's office or google it. Of course there are exceptions in some places, and like he said, there is corruption in all levels of government. Special Districts are required by law to file a budget and an audit report with the state each year. They are also required to publish notices in local newspapers when they have a PUBLIC meeting to review the budget. And when they elect board members. Everyone has the right and resources to know what districts they are in. It is incumbent upon a property owner to know what they are getting into when they buy the property. If you're concerned, do some research. Don't be a victim of your own ignorance.

+tompw3141 well, as Oliver stated, special districts are a form of local government.
Now, a more centralized local government, lets call it "County Affairs", could exist and handle all or most of these functions, to a degree. But, if they population they cover grows too big, they may not have enough people to manage all the reports and management from multiple interests. These special districts are meant to act as groups with one job done meticulously well every time, rather than a general group trying to juggle all the functions and possibly dropping a ball.

Take all the nuclear waste on the planet, and then put them in Florida and launch it into space. This will "unintentionally" fail on the launchpad. This will: Stop global warming, get rid of invasive species, and get rid of the nuclear waste, with the bonus of no more Cuban illegal immigrants. All punishments will be burning at the stake, thus eliminating municipal violations, bail is fixed, crime goes down, AND we can live out the nuclear winter. Then I will give NASA all the money and leave.

$8.5 Trillion unaccounted for by the military, no one bats an eye
$2.7 billion unaccounted in special districts, and everyone loses their minds

+Mr Bubbles source on 8,5 trillion "unaccounted for" by the military?

+Mr Bubbles Actually, many of us "bat an eye" at the military over spending and indiscretion.. However, the kooks then call us "unpatriotic commies", threaten us with terrorist acts (that the spending is ironically supposed to prevent), and tell us to get out of our own country if we don't like the way the military is doing things..
The special districts, and tax exempt "churches" all blowing what little money the country has left, is just the icing on the cake..

A point to make: my local fire department puts on a 4th of July fireworks show every year for free to encourage less people setting off fireworks in the area (and potentially starting a fire since the average citizen doesn't always know how to handle fireworks safely), so in certain cases it does make sense for a fire department to have fireworks.
