@@JackPitmanNica I mean, unless we engrave it on a steel plate or seal a paper transcript inside an air-tight anhydrous container, no broadcast is surviving for longer than a human lifetime without needing to be re-recorded, which slows down degradation rather than outright preventing it. Remember how like a decade or two ago, all of the old Disney movies had to be "digitally remastered" and "restored" to their original quality? That's because the original film reals used as the master copies had been degraded by time. And that's the largest media company in the world. Entire episodes of the original Doctor Who no longer exist. The only reason we even have a lot of the smaller things is because of archivists working diligently to keep records of stuff, and even then, there's still so much lost media out there that we'll never be able to get back. 1960s news reports in rural Kansas. Weddings recorded on VCR that your kids taped over with an episode of Power Rangers. Books whose only printing were destroyed by water damage before they could be shipped out. Video games that sold maybe 100 copies and got forgotten about. Scientific studies burned by Nazis. Entire family histories destroyed.
I lived in Russia for over two years. I was there for Putin's first two elections. At that time, things seemed to be starting to look up for Russia. People were starting to see the benefits of working with the West instead of against it. America, stupidly, treated Russia as almost irrelevant and essentially domesticated, and the understandable anger that came from that helped Putin immeasurably. Whether he would have taken power without that feeling that Russians had that they were losing authority on the world stage is a thorny, complicated question, but it certainly didn't help.

The best thing john did was create and understanding between a highly intelligent person and the average american person. Its not an insult to either, just some neurodivergent people have givennup understanding social standards.
No, that is pretty insulting. It's an ableist framing of the situation.
People have an unjustly clean conscience. They don't worry about it because they don't think they are doing anything wrong. Thus it doesn't concern them.
dang can’t believe nothing ever came of this
Did you used to make videos?
@@EmpyreanLightASMR i still do just not on this channel
@@callamastia what's your other channels name? (if you want to share 😃)
Yeah kind of heart breaking
John Oliver is the best
I wonder how difficult it would be to get a look at those files.
Are you referring to the files that Snowden disclosed, or files that the NSA has on specific people?
The Snowden files are easily accessible. You just have to know where to look. Google won't help you.
As far as with the NSA has on any individual, you would need to get a job with the NSA to do that.
Book at a room at Mar-a-lago?
@@meganann3876😂👌
I wish I could know how much of this was written (from both sides).
The joke setups were incredible.
Great Reporting Pastor Ben
Dave Franco is the best Franco! Not even a debate
Best one yet
I know it is silly and fun as well, but him breaking things down in this way is genuinely very helpful. I never understood what people were talking about with this stuff. I have a TBI and have limits when it comes to language and processing. Part of that means large amounts of information, especially in written form, simply don't absorb. I don't end up actually understanding anything. But even though it is with much less nuance, its still enough to provide some good perspective and let people understand it
Keep me posted on if there’s any updates on surveillance thing…
The canned soup line hit hard
I wonder if that Iran deal worked out….
My favorite episode of the show
Freedom of Speech with this man.
We need a follow up on some of these things
18:50 how depressing.
Edward deserves so much more. He sacrificed his whole life. You think he did that casually?
Still one of the best episodes of LWT!
There's South Dakota?! OK. It kinda makes sense actually. Soryy😂
Ah yes the Iran deal. I remember when that was still a thing.
Perhaps the most heroic thing this show has ever done. 🫡 Thank you for your sacrifice, Edward Snowden.
Great interview
Lol I got an ad for Louisiana during this video.
The only thing that tripped my bullshit detector 12:25 "The only time you're risk-free is in prison" Talk about offers that aren't necessarily available in your area 😂.
Thanks youuuu
Thanked the full season
That Bieber story interrupt was absolutely infuriating. All by design.
Someday archeologists are gonna dig up our ruins and be like "This John Oliver guy told them all their problems n they just ignored him !"
Digital storage mediums are lucky to survive even 20 years in ideal conditions, let alone long enough in poor enough conditions to be considered archaeology.
@@DragonbIaze052 We need to start broadcasting LWT into space then
@@JackPitmanNica When the signal leaves our star's magnetic bubble, it will lose a significant degree of integrity as it's mixed in with cosmic radiation.
@@DragonbIaze052 Sounds like we are screwed then
@@JackPitmanNica I mean, unless we engrave it on a steel plate or seal a paper transcript inside an air-tight anhydrous container, no broadcast is surviving for longer than a human lifetime without needing to be re-recorded, which slows down degradation rather than outright preventing it.
Thank you
I lived in Russia for over two years.
This is hilariously educational
That they both were red faced during this interview is perfect. Snowden because he didn’t realize how much parody would be in this interview, and Oliver because he really just did a piece of truly important journalism… phrased as a parody :/ I love you both and this was a great example of America and our media
😂 When the conversation was rephrased as dpics, suddenly the concept clicked with people.😂
One of the best episodes
just a reminder that he also released after action reports and that led to an uptick of things getting immensely dangerous for ground troops
I remember the excitement on every Iranian's face back when the news of a possible deal came out. We were so young, so naive...
anything that is said , text, or pic over the internet is out there. My son told me never say, text ,send its out there.
They need to give Daniel O'Brien. His own segments on this show to gear him up to have his own show. He's not too sweaty for camera
I've always wondered if the full cut of the interview is up anywhere, I feel like we got way too little
Thank you for introducing me to the inglorious funkers
James Sensenbrenner, writing the Patriot Act, and having reasonable concerns about it after the what we have found about him... 😬
Hi. Love u.. i love in central texas.. omfg.. help us.. get rid of T. Cruz
The person who gives up freedom for security deserves neither. I see Snowdon as a hero, and it is really sad how little and short a memory so many of us have.
THE BEST SHOW YET......BRAVO ! just .. saying
There’s something about the way John annunciates the T in “shit” that really fuckin gets me. Especially when it’s said like “shiiiii-T”
Wow John Oliver looks so young in this video and it was only 8 years ago
Genius. He got him to dumb it down!!
Long before Snowden's revelation, I knew someone "could be watching". Perhaps that is why I never thought it to be a good idea to mail a picture of my junk, but now that I know for sure, it might be worth a try!!!
27:32 I just want to point out that he said: "My country travels with me." Yet when told that it was the wrong answer and coming to understand what kind of interview this is going to be. (One with a comedy show host) He immediately abandoned all of it and said "I do miss my country." Implying his country is in fact *not* where he is. Instead of "I do miss America." or "I do miss the geological country." Also, no, your country doesn't travel with you, your "home" does. "My country" is either the one you're in, or the one you feel you belong to.
27:55 *To his credit though,* that was absolutely the *correct* answer to the question: "[Do you miss] ..the entire state of Florida?"
