Ridiculously ahead of its time and motive ages like fine wine! 5/6 motives can’t even beat it.

Ahead of its time in terms of the motive, and requel nostalgia before it was even a thing. However, the dialogue and humour is very 2011 and dated. Some parts are extremely cringy to watch and lower the tone of the movie. The look and feel was extremely camp and cheap compared to the first three films, and the characters were almost cartoonish.

@@Movies4evaaCan you provide some examples as to how it was cringy and cartoony? I personally thought Deputy Perkins’ death scene was ruined by that cheesy “F*ck Bruce Willis” line but that’s my only minor complaint.

I would say yes. Had it been released around this time, it would have been much more successful. You are correct, Scream 5 owes everything to Scream 4. Fans are hungrier for nostalgia and these reboots/requels.

Scream 4 was what got me into the franchise in the first place. It's had such a huge impact on me, probably because I was so young when I saw it. It's probably a movie I'll hold close to my heart, and I think it revolving around internet fame really fuels an interesting motive, especially for someone like Jill.

    This film is my favourite

I remember seeing this movie in theaters and loving it.
I thought the twist of Jill being the killer was great. I guess since I was 22 years old at the time, the motive to me made sense. I was always online during that time. I think the issue was the audience who was older than me at the time didn't relate to the motive at all.
Even with the streaming your whole life online, although it wasn't happening at the time (at least being able to walk around and go live) I didn't see the issue with it in the moment. Maybe I just wasn't thinking that deeply of it. Lol.

It was definitely ahead of its time. I've been saying that to anyone that would listen before other people started to realize it was ahead of its time. I don't agree that it should've come out sooner because Wes Craven passed in 2015, and this being his final film just makes his legacy even better, especially given how much talk there is over this film. It would've been a sad end to his career if My Soul to Take were his last.

Yes absolutely. Scream 4 is one of my favorites and the first one I saw in theaters. The killer was a big suprise and way ahead of it's time. It's a shame it didn't do well. Would love to have seen Kevin Williamson's original Scream 5, but glad to see 4 is getting the love it deserves. Scream 3 also is ahead of it's time with the voice changer. Today it can be done with AI which is so frightening but back in 2000, not so much. Again Scream franchise is a game changer, and so ahead.

Scream 4 was definitely ahead of its time, besides the cinematography I enjoyed it! If it would’ve came out in 2013/14 after IG hit the scene it would’ve been a hit! I disagree that Jill’s motive was so inconceivable because it’s essentially Mickey’s motive, just updated with the times. He wanted notoriety from a big tv trial & headlines. I will also disagree about the technology aspect though, I was a HS freshmen in ‘05 and everyone in the school had a cellphone. We also had instances of ppl acting out on SM(tagged/myspace) to get recognition. It was just in its infancy but it was definitely happening.

I feel like where scream 4 started strong, but ended feeling a bit of a void. I still rate in 9.25… despite it being my least favorite scream, and I appreciated it more after Scream 2022.
I did adore the cast from Scream 4 and it seemed like a fresh start like the original was.. I just felt there were things missing from so much charisma from the characters.
Kirby was excellent, I agree. Would’ve been nice to see her having shot Jill in the head like Tara shot Amber in the head. Things that happened in Scream 2022 just seemed to create of what we wanted to see in the characters. Plus, we got to see how Kirby did survive in Scream 2022. Scream 2022, Sam also knows the characters of Scream 4 being just 3-4 younger… even mentioning “some idiot” referring to Jill and Charlie, trying to kill their friends and get famous.
So for me, Scream 2022 pretty much have Scream 4 that conclusive meaning needed.

Scream 4 was supposed to be the start of a new trilogy. It didn't do that well at the box office. So when 5 came along after Wes died it kind of went back to what 4 was trying to do by mirroring the original. And 6 mirrored the sequel. I think if 7 got made it was supposed to mirror Scream 3 by bringing in someone who orchestrated all the events from the shadows.

I disagree with everything people say about Scream 4 being "ahead of it's time". But yes, it was basically a prelude to what we would get from Scream 2022. But how Scream 2022 did it was a bit different because Scream 4 was riding off of the remake trend that was happening all throughout the 2000s that lasted even into the early 2010s. Scream 5 was following the legacy sequel trend which were not remakes, but reboots/sequels that were giving us something new mixed with something similar. The two movies are only similar with the use of mixing the old and new cast but Scream 4 relied more on its "remake" angle to copy the original where Scream 5 wasn't really doing that and was trying to be more of a fresh story. I disagree with your point of how audiences didn't want to be interested in nostalgia. The nostalgia was HUGE for those classic movies of the decades before that was being redone which is why many made so much money and were successes. Scream 4 having this be an issue couldn't be any further from the truth when all these remakes were doing just that in the years beforehand. So the nostalgia factor was not an issue here. Your point of Scream 4's use of the internet fame. HA! Many have said this and I just shake my head. Like that was anything new or rare in 2011? It wasn't or else it wouldn't have been made such a big deal. The internet has been around since the late 1980s. You have horror movies like HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION that was in 2001 (ten years before) that used this as a primary tool for its story. You had the web cam and social media thing there. So what was Scream 4 apparently doing so new ten years later? Nothing. The nerd thing I also disagree with because we've had nerd characters for years ranging from cool guys to lames. I don't see how Scream 4 did anything with it that has not been done before. So, I think Scream 4's failure stems from simply poor marketing and the story not being good rather than its themes and elements being either too advanced to tell. The marketing; many have stated they didn't even know of the movie's existence until it's release so it was a hit and miss. I remember the hype not really being all the way there like it probably was for the first three movies as if Dimension Films just didn't care for the movie. The story; it just wasn't really that good. A lot of scenes were cut so we lost a lot of development for characters and none of the new ones outside of maybe Jill and Kirby seemed remotely interesting. The remake angle was even underwhelming because the movie should have been more of a remake than it could have been. There was enough in it to know what they were doing, but not enough to really make it work especially since it had the OG characters there in a major way and trying to have them do new and different things. The concept would have worked better if we focused more on Jill and her peers, a deputy under Dewey who was a sibling to one of Jill's friends, a Gale-like reporter without it actually being Gale, and Jill's boyfriend as the killer with his vendetta being to remake the original massacre, going as far as to push an affair between his dad and Jill's mom to mirror Sidney's affair with Billy's mother. Sidney didn't even need to be involved or be related to Jill. She could have just been out living her life free of Ghostface. As far as the term "requel" is concerned, I feel like it was misused with Scream 5. Scream 4 would be a requel because the term "requel" is a remake sequel. Again, Scream 5 was not trying to remake the original while also continuing the story. The term that movie should have used was "soft reboot" or legacy sequel.

I have my issues with Scream 4, but I do believe if it came out now, people would probably like it, though the killer's motive is sort of meme worthy to me lmfao. Jill still remains as one of my fav Ghostface, next to Billy and Roman. Though I still like Scream 4 taking place in the beginning of the social media take over, so that was neat and a cool little time capsule for how influential the internet was even back then.

    1. Take off the awful lighting filter(feels like a dream sequence the entire time)
    2. Even though it had the same score composer, the music seemed corny like a parody.
    3. Due to alot a scenes being cut.....the movie didn't flow and seemed too chopy.
    4. I wish they would have left the original opening with the other girl Marnie. I thought she was more believable. (The other chick was a bad actress and her screams annoyed me)
    5. Needed better chase scenes and more suspense.

I can answer that question easily. No it didn’t come out too soon because if it was in development any later than it might not have happened. Sadly Wes Craven was only alive for just a few more years after Scream 4. If it came out any later than Wes’s deteriorating health may have been too much for him to be able see the movie to completion. It may have even had a domino effect making the franchise never have another sequel. It may not have done as well financially as it deserved but many fans (including myself) still consider it to be the best sequel. And Wes Craven needed one last great movie before he passed. His last few movies before Scream 4 were stinkers. Most don’t remember that so I’d say that it helped preserve his legacy rather than being yet another filmmaker past their prime, desperately clinging to relive their best years but damaging their legacy in the process. Some good examples of this are Ridley Scott and James Cameron

For a while now I've asked my self "Am I a trend setter?" because I'm a 90's kid. I was born in 87. I grew up on 80's and 90's movies. In the 2000's I was able to find more movies from the 80's and the 70's and for 2 decades; 2000's and 2010's I was in a constant state of "Watching new movies with my mom in theaters. Watching 2 or zero "new" movies every year and stuck in a perpetual cycle of watching nothing but 70's and 80's movies. Along with 90's movies I grew up on like Ticks, Pet Semetary 2, Scream, etc. So I was actually the PERFECT target audience for Scream 4, which is why I was really hyped for when it came out. I went saw it in theaters and to me I instantly thought "This is a return to basics and the best Scream sequel." For me, the 2000's was a depressing and dark era of horror. I was sick and tired of the asian horror. I didn't like any of the Saw movies. I've never wasted my time with Paranormal activity and I generally find that genre to be incredibly boring. Except for a few handfuls of movies I've largely said "Screw it. Horror sucks now. Movies suck now." I remember as a 13-15 year old in 2001, 2002, 2003 and thinking to my self "Damn, horror SUCKS NOW. What the f**k happened to all these awesome movies I watch?! Oh...they were made in the 70's, 80's, and 90's....that's what happened. The 90's really is over,uh?"
"One cause was the decline in the interest of the slasher movie." Funny, since my interest in the slasher movie peaked during this time. Thanks to the internet I was able to find slasher movies I was never able to watch before. Didn't even know existed. Like Slumber party massacre, Sleepaway camp, The burning, My bloody Valentine, Bloody birthday, The initiation, Visiting hours, The house on sorority row, etc. Before that I had only seen Friday the 13th part 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7. A nightmare on elm street 1,2,3, 5, and Freddy's dead. Child's play 1-Bride of Chucky, Halloween 1-5, and The prowler. It was easier access to the internet and horror documentaries that helped expand my film viewing, along with word of mouth from other fans that showed me there was so much more out there. So I had always rejected the "reality tv" horror trend, the paranormal trend, and while I tried to get into asian horror in the 2000's. Most of it totally sucked. Audition and a couple others I like, but those are all from the 90's and 80's.
So for 2 decades I've watched nothing but 70's, 80's, and a little bit of 90's movies and very few "modern" movies. Like May, Ginger snaps, It stains the sands red, Turbo kid, Trick R treat, and a few more.
Only in the past couple of years have I started to revisit some of those 90's movies I had watched as a kid, or had missed, and around 2021 I said to my self "How many more decades am I gonna go watching the same comfort movies over and over and over and over again?" So I am watching more and more 70's movies. Because I feel like I've already watched a ton of 80's, but not enough 70's in comparison. I'm also watching more 60's movies, more 90's movies and more "modern movies" ie 2010's and 2020's.
And now in 2020's it's like "everyone wants to be me" basically.
And in terms of Scream 4 and the "theme of internet fame". What is weird is the word "internet" in that, because what was big in the 2000's? What was the trend? Found footage movies and reality TV. Again, there is a reason why I have a love/HATE for the 2000's. It was sadly my teen years and of course I'm gonna have nostalgia for it, even if it was a terrible decade.
The "internet fame" in Scream 4 isn't really true at all. In fact, when i watch the film and when I watched the film for the first time my mind instantly went to "My sweet 16, Ghosthunters, Paris Hilton, Honey Boo boo, every scum reality show that rots your brain basically."
And I remember when Scream 4 came out, everyone was like "it's like an outdated older person's view of the internet and technology." LOL.
And Kirby, I absolutely related to, although her character was far too....less knowledgeable then I was/am.
I remember instantly thinking when they brought up Peeping tom "That isn't correct. Peeping tom didn't start the slasher genre. It predates Psycho, but a ton of other proto slashers existed before Peeping tom and sorry but Peeping Tom was HATED when it came out and actually RUINED THE DIRECTOR'S CAREER." and if I personally had to pick "what film is responsible for the slasher genre? I'd want to say Black Christmas and Texas Chainsaw massacre, but it was really Halloween which was inspired by Black Christmas." And of course I was already a big Dario Argento/Italian horror/giallo movie nerd before Scream 4 came out. So when she mentioned Suspiria I was like "Hey, they mentioned Suspiria." And now I see a ton of Dario Argento and giallo movie fans online. Again, I'm a trend setter, lol. Same with true crime. I've always been into true crime since I was a child and I've only become even more into true crime as time as passes, to the point of burn out at times and of course true crime popularity comes in waves like everything else and the 90's was heyday for true crime. That died down a bit in the 2000's. In the 90's and 2000's being into true crime could get you sent to see a guidance counselor [which happened with me in the 2000's] and people would absolutely judge you.
So ya, I was the target audience, the perfect audience member for Scream 4. Now my history of the Scream franchise is weird.
I watched it a year later when it came out. I liked Scream. Was not a fan of Scream 2 or 3, although I did watch them repeatedly and my view was basically "Not as good the originals. Bad sequels." but I still enjoyed them to an extent and enjoyed them...and of course what did Scream do for the slasher and horror genre? Sanitized it. Meta this and meta that. They started to look more mainstream. They lost their edge. We saw pretty boys from big time TV shows in leading roles, etc...and I was a horror fan growing up on 80's and early 90's movies was angry and I totally rejected where horror was going. So I joined the many other horror fans at the time who were part of the post Scream backlash. As a result I boycotted the Scream franchise for a few years "I'll stick to my Friday the 13th, Elm street, Ticks, Pumpkinhead, etc thank you very much." but I eventually said "Just watch Scream for it's own merits" and so I gave Scream a rewatch after a couple years and loved it and I watch it every now and then. So by the time Scream 4 came along, I had already watched Scream again and found a new love for it and not blaming it for all the BS that came after. It's not like they did it intentionally.
So ya, i've been complaining and bashing 2000's horror since at least 2002.
70's and 80's horror will never die. Those are the golden age and always will be. F**k 2000's horror. F**k todays horror and apparently a ton of people are finally waking up and going "Wait...films of today ARE NOT like the classics from the 70's, 80's, or even 90's." and my response is "Did you see Seed of Chucky in 2004?! Did you see Freddy vs Jason in 2003?! Ya, i realized this when I was 14 f**king years old. it was like a culture shock. Going "What the hell is going on here?! HORROR SUCKS NOW!" and a lot of fans felt that way.
I can go on and on and on and on about my negative views on modern cinema; terrible lifeless fashion and boring as f**k scenery. Shot on digital which looks TERRIBLE. FILM will always surpass digital and many directors who try and justify not shooting on film basically admit "it's easier and wastes less time when you shoot in digital." That's well and great, but movies are a VISUAL FORMAT. Terrible boring backgrounds, lack of old school shots like a character's feet, shots from the trees, leaves, scenery. I can go on and on and on. Gone is the sleaze that you saw in the 70's and 80's. Gone is the rawness. Gone is the grain. Terrible lighting. Gone are the soundtracks of films. I watch a film now, the music sucks, isn't exploited enough through out the entire film, etc. Back in the 80's and 90's we got a ton of films that actually had their own music. Made JUST FOR THE FILM. The film makers actually made their own catchy songs for the film. Abuse of CGI; lack of special effects. Every film has to appeal to EVERYONE. No film can be a gamble anymore. To quote Joe Bob Briggs "They were all about what hasn't been done before? they were all about the original idea. They were all about WHAT WOULD HOLLYWOOD REFUSE TO MAKE?! THAT'S WHAT WE WANT TO MAKE. Nobody is willing to get down and dirty like they did in the 80's." and to quote Loyde Kaufman "Problem today is everybody is trying to please all the people at all the times. It's like baby food. Which is okay, you can live on baby food, but it's very boring". I can go on and on and on. By the time Scream 4 came out, there was a metal band that was made up of slasher/horror movie fans and they created a song basically bashing "modern" horror movies "Gone is the blood. Gone are the tit#. Gone is everything that we f**king miss." "PG13 horror is packing the seats." "Hip hop infecting the culture. Busta Rhymes and Michael Myers? This sh*t is f**king torture." "lack of ideas. Regression through technology. Will Peter Jackson save us? No, we get that lame ass trilogy." So ya, I was bashing modern horror at the time, this song comes out bashing modern horror in the 2000's, and then 6 years later Scream 4 comes out. I was hyped. I went and saw it in theaters and loved it.
In terms of the new Scream movies.
Hated Scream 5. Kind of liked Scream 6 despite serious problems with it.

I think Scream 4 should have come out in 2005 instead

2005 would’ve been way too soon. social media was only just kicking off and not far enough into the future to be considered a “remake”. in fact we used to criticize studios for making reboots that early

Scream 4 is horrible in all ways, but mostly because it doesn't have a moment of suspense or terror.

I think these points go for everything released between the mid 2000s to the early to mid 20teens in all areas of entertainment …leaning on nostalgia to early and tech.
still being in the beginning stages
….that’s why people can’t properly vision a 2000s party without reverting back to the 90s because it wasn’t enough innovation in that time frame of the 2000s
