Inside Boots' 24-hour shoplifting CCTV hub catching thieves in the act

- High street stores are this week expected to report a rise in shoplifting and abuse against their staff.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Thefts related to drug abuse, as well as by people struggling to make ends meet, costs retailers over 600-million pounds in revenue annually.
And this programme understands that figures released by the British Retail Consortium later this week will show cases of violence and abuse against staff have doubled since 2019.
We've been granted rare and exclusive access to a CCTV monitoring centre at the retailer Boots’ headquarters in Nottingham.

Yeah, theft is bad but so is dodging taxes and paying yourself literally billions whilst your staff are on minimum wage.
So most companies then
So boots dodges taxes??? The owners are paying themselves?
If staff under paid, Walk and go work somewhere else.
@@techtitanuk5609NOT RIGHT THOUGH IS IT!
Royal family in their residences 😂
Today I went food shopping. Three of the items sale price did not ring up correctly and each time I had to call for assistance from a peeved off worker. She was not happy that I was interrupting her chats with another worker. At the end I saw that my membership points were not added to my account. I went over to her and her face was so dour that I just gave up and went home. THE MORAL OF MY TALE is that businesses will often walk a thousand miles to catch a shoplifter but can't find time for paying customers because the computer cashiers fail to properly charge an item.
If I'm ONE PENNY SHORT I can't buy the item, but the business wants to "accidentally" over-charge up to a a dollar and feel put upon when asked for the price to be corrected.
Imagine tripping and you pocket a chocolate bar and hear a voice from some speaker above saying PUT THE ITEM BACK YOU ARE BRING WATCHED
It's super great, we've normalised 24 hour low-paid watchdogs protecting the profits for Stefano Pessina (owner of Boots which moved to the HQ'd in Switzerland for tax purposes in 2010) a man with a $10bn networth, from the poorest and most desperate in society.
Please don't be so busy with your day-to-day to see that income disparity of this level is truly obscene.
The rich elites steal from all of us every day
So.... it's OK to steal from the rich?
Your post translates to a subtle cry of "I am a petty thief, please let me steal items unabated".
@@bannedinfinity5789 yes

Imagine the progress we’d see if these guys watched the politicians.
But they’re busy hounding the poor right now.
From experience, the shoplifters are drug addicts and criminals
What an astoundingly dumb comment. It's organised theft, they sell the products on.
I love how society looks at the crime but not why the crime is being committed. If they bothered to root out the actual cause then situations like these wouldn't happen. This government doesn't care about you.
What's that? You want a pay increase to pay your rent and food bills? Sorry, no can do, think of the economy!
@@Xune2000 🤡🤡🤡
Maybe people need higher wages. If people are shoplifting then it's a failing of society more than a failing of the individual
We do need higher wages, but people still shoplift in Switzerland where the lowest paid worker gets around £21 per hour (that's minimum wage, but typically £30+ an hour is not uncommon as bar staff or something similar.)
You need equity, lower cost of living, higher wages will just be eaten up by an increase in rent.
LOL
Low wages is but only one component to theft. Some people do it to feed their drug addiction, for the sheer thrill of it, greed, narcissistic entitlement, or because they have impulsive tendencies.
Most shoplifters in my workplace is done by drug addicts in Brighton
@@199019852007 i thought everyone in Brighton was a drug addict. Your police literally walk past people doing drugs on the street and do nothing.
If the cost of living was affordable for everyone people wouldn't HAVE to do this to make ends meet. But yeah let's judge them from our ivory towers anyway ... 🥴🙄
Boots is really nasty as someone who worked there they stop and search all staff members every time they turn up and leave work so they treat their own staff like criminals and we didn’t steal anything ❤❤❤❤
Why would no one think about these massive corporations 😢
I work for a large retailer and shoplifting is rife, especially beauty products. With self service in stores, shrinkage has gone up let alone products being insured.
I notice this system depends on staff pressing a panic button after observing shoplifting. But stores are massively understaffed. At Boots, I've seen people become so frustrated at no one attending the pharmacy counter and finding no one to help they just take what they want and after several attempts to pay at other counters just walk out in frustration.
So people who can’t be bothered to wait in a shop to be served just steal the things instead? Interesting..

Absolutely true, NHS cuts to pharmacies mean cuts to staff
Staff are expensive
Where is the state to help these addicts, such a government failure it’s unreal.
Help addicts and they won’t steal, help ppl and they won’t steal.
Dont help ppl they will steal
And who pays for that system the working public? Yeah the working man has to pay to fix addicts problems good one.
Some addicts that steal are already recieving help. It's not as simple as that.

Can't have the poorest of society stealing baby formula now can we.
Walgreens Boots Alliance has a hefty $25 million signing bonus, $1.5 million annual salary and a private jet to pay for for their CEO.
Let's just teal everything then. Where do you live? We need to know since we are taking everything you own. [insert excuse to detract from life's own failures].
Nobody needs to steal baby formula as EVERY mother is given tax credits or help to feed their baby. Benefits at the very least pay you enough to eat. I should know.
Bellend, they don’t steal baby formula they steal hair straighteners, perfume, skincare. Stop framing it as down on their luck parents trying to feed their darling kids. It’s greedy little pricks that want something for free.
So much easier with the self - service check outs, thanks🙂
The money the stores save by making YOU do the work far exceeds the money they lose at self-service tills.
Love how they try to insinuate shop theft is about addiction rather than inflation related poverty.
I tried to help Staff stop someone walking out of Tesco with unpaid booze I succeeded only for him to try to assault me when I came out , never again will I try to help
None of my business
I'd never get involved in someone shoplifting....I have worked in shops where people have been jabbed with syringes over being challenged... do you think the store will care if you catch something???? I'd only intervene and I have when pensioners have had their purse stolen
@@peachmelba1637 well I felt sorry for the two members of Staff trying to wrestle the alcohol out of his hand so I blocked his escape from the store as I said never again
This is why online shopping will take over. The mass hoards of criminal scum find it harder to rob when there are no more shops.
I love taking my time is shops but I don't shop at boots anymore because ive feel like im being watched just coz im indidisive,
Wow a CCTV voice broadcast from a control centre? I could do with one of these at the Barnardo's charity shop in Boston to scare off the shoplifters and fraudsters; I'm sure that they'll get the shock of their lives and walk out of the store when they hear a voice from one of the security guys in the control centre if the person attempts to steal or swap price tags! lol😂
Anyone who tries to justify shoplifting as some kind of Robin Hood act needs to stop and consider what it's like to work in store. Forget about the rich owners. Shop workers are some of the lowest paid in society, they don't deserve the fear associated with people repeatedly coming into their place of work to steal, threaten, intimidate and harm them. They're on a low income and go out and work for it. Or if you really want to view it as a crime against the rich, look at it this way - if an addict is thieving, they are doing it to give the money to the dealer in exchange for their product, so, what the crime is achieving isn't helping the poor, it's keeping them in the rut of addiction, whilst making criminal enterprise richer.
If business owners invested more into staff, maybe there'd be fewer people shoplifting.
Ex Boots employee here LOL This does NOT happen. The panic button goes tot he security guard on the otherside of the car park, even though our store had its own security. He rarely got anyone.
I always wondered what happened to Boots stores in Canada are they still just a drug store or did they expand their stores to carry other items? they just disappeared from here i n the mid eighties.
My local Boots is small and the things that people want to steal, the most are boxed up, just like expensive meat joints in the supermarkets. Also my branch has good security and the perfume is in cabinets.
Someone once got caught, because I saw her and told the guard and someone else once tried to open my back pack, it's zip is sealed with a road safety disc, tied to string with safety pins; he went ouch, and got nothing. 😁
It's Not Bullying To Make People Aware So That Hopefully It Doesnt Happen Again.
Imagine being Channel 4 (post-Jon Snow) MAKING A 'REPORT' ABOUT 'SHOPLIFTING' AT A MAJOR CORPORATION "DURING A 'COST OF LIVING' CRISIS" and making links to 'Drug Abuse' and 'Mental Health' 🙃 This is definitely not a good look (considering there's NO MENTION of THE ROOT CAUSES and years of Government neglect)
Good to know that if I ever end up on the streets i can get free stuff literally any where. SMH😮
Reading the comments I’m actually embarrassed by the majority of people. Have some integrity. There are people truly living in poverty who never do this. Constantly protecting criminals. It’s embarrassing.

Police will not attend. Waste of time calling.
@@koby4094The police won't do anything about it unless the stolen goods are worth over £200. All the store can do is ban the person from entering again and seek a civil recovery to recover the losses caused by the shoplifter.
@@sambee8982 what a farce.
@@koby4094 I know right, it's probably because the police have got their hands tied on solving more serious crimes and think that it's a waste of time filling in paperwork on minor crime incidents.
I was in Boots, Huntingdon, yesterday. I saw a man with an open rucksack on the floor. He was busy stealing expensive face creams. I pointed it out to a member of staff. She had a headset on spoke into it, describing him. By this time, he was on his way out. She later told me she had been too frightened to confront him. A few minutes later, a woman was caught shoplifting, she denied it, and then just left the stuff and strolled off. These people are NOT generally on the breadline. They know nothing will happen to them, do it to sell it on, and are brazenly couldn’t care less. It’s other shoppers who will pay the price for all this with even higher prices. The Government is not responsible. Greedy, feckless, people are.
I can't say I agree with you that the government isn't responsible. They are entirely responsible for the chaos that is in our lives, in our homes and is out there in the roads, streets and shops. It's called policing.
Uk should do what one American store does have all items behind screens I know nowadays we shouldn't do that but it stops shop lifting and put tills behind screens so if a robber tries to rob the store he or she can't have a bullet prove screens too
Come on no one gives a shite about shoplifting it's poor people trying to live and for the people who say things will go up in price do you think if everyone stopped shoplifting tomorrow they'd put the prices down I think not
exactly
Because the likes of Amanda Bynes, Kim Richards, Winona Ryder, and Lindsay Lohan are so poor right? It's not just poor people that steal. Arseholes do.
And it's shoplifters that cost money and raise prices everywhere for the ordinary taxpayers like me to suffer.

Hardcore Tory programming.
It’s strange how they can afford such high-tech security yet they cannot afford to keep the prices down. In addition, with the financial crisis, price is going up is going to perpetuate shoplifting. No, I don’t think shoplifting is particularly clever, but again, price is going up and up is going to breed shoplifting.
The police will be contacted he said lol you cant do anything to them unless thet leave the store with the items

So feel sorry for the corporation they making billions every year
That's make it right then.
@@ImranKhan-dp8iyNo it doesn’t. Each store gets an allocated budget and if their profit is being hammered by theft, it’s the staff who get made redundant. So while everyone says people shouldn’t go without in one breath, they then cause them to go without in the other breath by saying theft is ok. And the more theft there is, the higher the prices and the more people go with less.
Everyone in comments who says stealing from them because they are a big organisation is a fool.
You think it’s a simple transaction of taking from a rich person but it’s not your stealing from a corporation, they need to protect the shop to protect its consumer. Theft is a loss of profit if it gets too much either shop closes and people lose jobs or more likely the prices go up to compensate for the loss.
The consumer then pays for their product plus a percentage of cost of the stolen goods. They are not stealing from some hoyty toiyty billionaire, they are stealing from you every time you buy something.
You can always tell the political persuasion of someone when they support rampant crime and excuse it with ''yeah but they are poor, it's the tories fault".
These people are unable to understand that theft and crime affects everyone.
Thieves are pure scum of the earth.
People who think it’s ok to steal from places like this clearly don’t know what goes on behind the scene. I was a store detective for Boots for many years and I have seen far too many tears in the office when staff get made redundant because of this. Theft impacts the stores allocated budget and so they cut staff and make them redundant.
😭 Tears. Then you worked in an abusive environment. Every worker has to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of others shoplifting.
@@user-sl4wj6te6j They don’t want to spend any more than they have to, just as a shoplifter doesn’t want to spend at all
The cost of living is causing this in my opinion.
People not taking personal responsibility for themselves and going out to do an honest days’ work is the key cause. There are so many unfilled vacancies in the UK job market and already very low unemployment - the jobs are there for people to do, but in so many cases people are too lazy to go out and do them. People may have developed addictions and obviously one feels sympathy for them, but it’s still ultimately their fault. The state is not liable for offering wraparound care for everyone in that predicament - it can obviously do what it can, but its remit will always be limited because there is a finite amount of money that can be raised by taxation - it’s not as simple as increasing corporation tax and tax on high-net-worth individuals as there are so many legal instruments and tax havens outside of the UK’s jurisdiction that prevent it. Ultimately so much of this boils down to the culture we’ve developed where we shun the notion of personal responsibility and seek to blame extraneous factors.
