These planes are made by completely different manufacturer, designed decades apart. A-10 - Fairchild Aircraft F-15 - Boeing F-35 - Lockheed Martin AV-8B - McDonnell Douglas
If the F-16 lands in a field, then it cannot be serviced without a ramp, it cannot be serviced. If he lands in the field, this is already an aviation incident.
Despite having built in ladders, From which of these showcased aircrafts, can a pilot unpack and get down without any sort of intervention from ground crew?
Yes. On the A10c there is a red round cap to the right that can be lifted and a button to extrend the ladder. But, to retract it, it requires ground crew. I'm not sure about the other aircraft.
F-15 is the most laconic. A-10 is brutal as his cannon. AV-8 isn't ladder, but the attraction "plop down , getting out". And yes, right-hand driving wheel forever (ladder is on the right side of the plane).
Using the internal ladder, the back seater climbs up and on to the intake, careful not to step on the edge of it. Normal ops are just to use a ladder that hooks on to the cockpit, then step over on to the intake.
That's so cool, but why not just make a ladder with wheel in airport, common use to all kinds of airplane. Airplane can lose some weight, and cost will also less~just a thought
Fighter aircraft need to be able to be deployed as quickly as possible, and may have to land in places that are not necessarily suitable for receiving them, or on the deck of an aircraft carrier where mobile ladders dragging and that could be blown all over the deck would not be the most suitable. They must therefore be at least somewhat autonomous, and have backup, which is why most of them also have an auxiliary power unit, to speed up start-up and not depend on equipment on the ground that may be absent.
You wouldn't want to rely on another outside piece of equipment to be able to get in (and out) of your plane. When jets need to be scrambled EVERY second counts and having to wheel over a ladder takes time as they can't have one lying out everywhere. Simple solution is to have the ability to mount the jet built into the jet.
From a new aerospace engineer, your line of thinking is absolutely correct. However I think the reason aligns with what the other individual stated: in the trade off between scramble time / getting in the air quickly, this solution was a good choice.
11:24 I don't know about you guys, but I would be very nervous flying a single engine airplane, whose engine make those scratchy noises after it is shutdown.
That's every jet engine. And what that is, is the compressor blades flexing and rattling after they have cooled down and loosen. They are intentionally loose like that so when they get hot and expand they are secure.
I'm surprised that ladders are built into all these fighters because ladders add weight and take up precious space and are another thing that can possibly go wrong. Wouldn't it be simpler to do away with built-in ladders and have a mobile ladder quickly moved next to the fighter when the pilot needs to get in or get out of the plane? I'm especially concerned about the built-in ladder with the F-35 because a built-in ladder means needing to make a little compartment that stores the ladder, and that compartment would have to be often opened and closed with the possibility of developing small problems with its fit that might cause it to develop a significant radar return.
As a person that has worked on a flight line before; the less that is carried out to the plane before take off, is less that has to be tracked before the plane can leave. Besides, if the plane lands somewhere they do not have a ladder for it, then the pilot would be stuck until one could be found.
Sometimes flying across country if you have to make a emergency landing at a general aviation Airport even a commercial field in a lot of cases they don't have the ladder capability available and that's why some of these aircraft have built-in ladders for the crews to use once they get on the ground
Yes, it's pretty typical. The fan blades aren't rigidly attached to the hub. Centrifugal force pulls and locks them into position once the RPM's are high enough. Sometimes when a jet is just sitting on the ground and the fan is wind milling in a breeze you can hear them going "tic-tic-tic."
Why is this built-in ladder needed? It is a waste of time, money (costs like a light car), effort, inconvenient and increases RCS. You can't service the plane with it. There is a normal ramp at any airfield. This is called "woe from wit" (a ballpoint pen, what could you write in zero gravity? There is an ordinary pencil)

Patents do apply, so different solutions. Also, austere remote operations capability, precludes having ladders everywhere.

This is fascinating! I never knew that the A-10 had such a unique boarding system! 💪✈
- Board!
The pilot shouted and climbed into the plane

I could never be an A10 pilot - my fear of heights would kick in halfway up that ladder

🤣🤣🤣 I see what you did there.
I read that in the event of ladder failure pilots had springs in their boots installed by ACME, tested by Wyle E Coyote.
Safe, sensible and light. Impressive

Just pull the ejection lever
I can't understand why I was enjoying watching this video about retractable ladders! I'm off to searching for a collection different drain plugs.

...That was awesome.
ahhh now i know to board them now to learn flying

You can tell the Harrier is a British design because the pilot enters from the right hand side, just like a British car.

Wish to see how the man on the backseat of the F15 is getting in and out. Looks pretty tight. And at 7:56 what does that signal mean?

Not much discreet in design for the back seat of F-15 (D/E/EX). The canopy should open higher to be easier to access.

since the ladder is not automatic, still need a ground crew to operate,
so why not use just a normal ladder carrying by the ground crew
