They said it couldn’t be done! Hatching WASHED goose eggs start to finish

  • Everyone said that if I washed eggs, they wouldn’t hatch! I got about a 40% hatch rate from these super dirty eggs, not bad for geese! The normal hatch rate for geese is about 50%. I washed the dirt off and dipped them all in a bleach water solution before putting them in the incubator. After that, every other day I put a few squirts of 3% hydrogen peroxide inside the incubator up until lockdown to help cut down on bacteria growth. At the end of hatching I ended up with 3/7 of the eggs hatching. I want to add since I forgot it in the video, that I’ve been mixing some nutritional yeast in with their feed to help up their niacin intake. Thanks for watching! #hatchingeggs #hobbyfarm #Homesteading #farmher

    if you wash the eggs goose or chick eggs use warm water, not hot and 3% Hydrogen peroxide says 3% on bottle improves hatch rate.
    Use warm water to spray eggs twice a day is recommended. Turn eggs 4x a day 180. Goose eggs are harder to hatch lock down 27 days smaller geese hatch usually day 30-31 and larger geese like Canadian can take 35 days. Loved your video and you will love your geese they are so fun. LOL to you all congratulations on your hatch great job. Don't feed medicated chick feed to goslings or mashes. Need niacin in diet like brewers yeast legs will bow. Look up Gosing food.

      I used non-medicated chick starter when I raised a gosling last year (she was the only one that made it out of six eggs I incubated). She started having leg problems as well as something like seizures. Then I learned they need niacin in their diet. I started giving her niacin in her water until I could get some waterfowl feed. She's doing good now although her legs are bowed a bit.

      @@ckelly864 Raising all Poultry is a learning curve. Yes, Niacin very important to gosling can use brewer yeast or liquid vitamins if feeding chick starter. The water fowl food also has niacin in it. I buy from Chewey mail to your home Hudson feed 23% protein for waterfowl birds and use mixture of the Mazurri waterfowl food goslings, growing big and strong. Also feed lettuce and crumble cooked egg yoke, sweet peas and soft canned sweet corn mixed in they love it. So much to learn when dealing with eggs and infant birds but all well worth it wonderful birds. Do have to watch protein drop to 18% after few weeks when wing feathers developing can read about in you tube too called Angel wing to much protein in diet. Chickens can happen also. Enjoy the birds, are just wonderful creatures for sure. Happy hatching!

    it's our first time hatching right now, in the beginning my boyfriend I think tried to mess with them too much. He stopped doing it as much now. We do watch them after first pipping and give them about half a day to break out more, if not we chip off the shell on the pip to break a hole for air. I don't want to mess with them too much, but I think we lost some due to not pipping in time before the air runs out. We also had a few pip at the wrong end of the egg as well, we wound up having to help them as they couldn't turn to zip. Hatching chicken eggs was a lot easier compared to geese.

    i tried hatching dirty goose eggs cuz i had read not to wash them. i lost one egg after another, then i read to wash with hydrogen peroxide. so i washed all my 2 week incubated eggs and the deaths stopped! i read an article that in addition to keeping bacteria at bay, it breaks down the cuticle so they can have air exchange. i washed 9 eggs over a week ago and ive only lost 1. the rest are in lockdown, hopefully ill have some goslings soon!

    I help my chicken and turkey chicks in hatching but before I start helping them I check first for the membrane if there still blood and I also check the yolk if it already inside the chick and I use match stick and carefully inserting it in the egg where the chick pipped and if everythings clear I give anothe 30mins for the chick to turn but if theres no movement that’s the time I help the chick and so far I all the chicks I helped made it to adulthood.

    In my experience none of my geeese have cared to guard anyone. I have multiple types of poultry. I have over 30 geese in my flock of various species. I have lost geese to foxes, stray dogs and watched them just watch as hawks carry away chickens. They make tons of noise but seldom do they guard or even attack anything predator especially a canine. Ill hear them go off but they just run like everyone else.

      Thanks so much for your reply . I live in Australia on 1/4 acre which l could easily make a happy home for a goose. It’s mostly cottage garden with two areas that l could alternate for grazing. I’m going to watch you guys some more and do more research . Your videos are wonderful. Thanks and please give lemon a big cuddle from me ❤️

      3-6 times a day, I used the farm innovators from tractor supply but as long as it's big enough for the goose eggs!

      Also did you use a wet washcloth instead of a sponge?

    • @MirkwoodHomestead
      @MirkwoodHomestead  4 місяці тому

      We recently hatched geese again and had a good hatch rate, after the first week and a half we would open and mist them once a day. We didn't have much of an issue keeping them humid so we didn't keep any cloth in it this time however a wash cloth would work just as well as a sponge
