You're not alone, I still struggle with lipo care, rc boating is tough on lipos.. Boats we have to contend with water damage, over discharging, high load/amp draw, corrosion, prop choice, I could keep going! unfortunately we slowly degrade our packs every time the boat hits the water..

Only discharge to 30% monitor motor temps no higher than 160 and always put a 50% storage charge on them and your batteries will last a long long time. I struggle with the only discharging to 30% because I want to enjoy that extra 3 minutes of fly/run time 🤣

Lipo fires are fun for the whole family!!! I had a battery decided that it no longer want to be a battery and started identifying as a blow torch! Started shooting out a nice big blue hot flame and almost burnt my garage down! Ever since that day I take good care of my batteries.

@@IRONCLADRC there should definitely be more warnings on them especially for the new people. I learned about lipo care when Adam Drake/team losi driver put out a PSA after almost losing his house, and his incident involved very well cared for packs. It's a pretty delicate chemistry going on inside these batteries and the crazy things we do with them brings the risk level up even more.

i got the Radiolink RC4G and get the 8 channel receivers that have telemetry. Hook up power leads and can get the battery voltage right on my radio. Can see the voltage drop during wide open pulls or just resting or anywhere in between. Also allows warning on the radio for the low voltage you set.

Cool device, always used lvc on ESC. There is voltage under load and resting voltage, lvc cuts off at 3.4V under load, but when battery is cool, it is resting at 3.8V, perfect for storage. Would love to see a video on battery heat, having a lot of issues with keeping batteries under 140 degrees F and puffing on a stock Sonic Wake V2 with 7000 mAh 60C regardless of how I run it.

IMO 3.4 is to low, but better than 3.2/3.0..
Lipos get really hot during the last 15-20% of there capacity, discharging to quick under that 15-20% mark will swell a pack in a heart beat, and cause temps to rise, that's why I bring mine in before they hit that 20% mark.

Real EV cars charge to 90% (never fully charge) and discharge to 10% (cutoff). Not being able to fully charge and discharge prolongs the life of the batteries. Real EV cars use LI-Ion batteries which aren't as powerful as Li-Po batteries but are much less volatile. Li-Po batteries can benefit from the same practice however. Like real cars, EV bicycles have battery management systems (BMS) that prevent over charging and discharging. Batteries for RC rely on the ESC (and the charger) to act as a BMS, but it really isn't the same because we can set the LVC on the ESC down to 3 volts per cell and charge the batteries to 100%. In other words, we the hobbyist assume the role of the BMS which is why RC batteries go bad over time. The advice in this video is very good and you should always monitor your batteries and store them properly if you want the batteries to last years rather than months.

I picked up a couple fire safes that you keep documents in. I store my batts in fire bags inside those. A little extra cheap insurance when keeping them in my house or garage.

    Big B,
This is great info! I am trying to learn about batteries also.
Can you also address reception range? I recently got the sonicwakeV2 and it loses reception before 300 feet. I do not know if that is normal for that boat or not. I have reached out to horizon hobby and they sent me a new transmitter but it still did the same thing. Is this normal? How can we extend range with these?
    Thanks

Awesome video's Big B!!! I have more less copied this boat. I have the same motor, the OSE 90amp ESC you formerly had in it and dual cooling. I have a 75mm rudder, OSE shaft and the OSE TFL 438 basher prop you use in it. I am running 2 CNHL 6200 100c or 2 Zeee 5200 100c Lipo's and it power cuts on me even at full charge. I remember you used to have caps on your 90amp ESC. Would it be better to go with a cap pack or I was thinking of going to a 150amp Flycolor ESC any idea which may be the better option?

    • @IRONCLADRC
      @IRONCLADRC  Рік тому +1

Some things i did to mine that you may not be aware of 6.5mm bullets, flow pack cap pack, timing at or below 15 degrees, lower your LVC cut off to 3.2 or 3.4v so the esc doesn't cut when at full amp draw.
      Or get the 150 esc.
My boat ran great with the 90a flycolor , never power cut wires would get hot, switched to larger bullets problem solved. Didn't want to change esc, only did it because a few guys asked me to.

@@IRONCLADRC Thanks for the input and advice. I need an ESC for a Steathwake build so putting the 90amp in that and I think I will order the 150amp for the Blackjack. Then its overkill but should be bulletproof for what I have (I hope) LOL!
