I think about Roy Haynes a lot. It’s just incredible to think there’s a man still walking this earth who played in Charlie Parker’s band. Along with Sonny Rollins, he’s the last living link to that era.
I wish they had played some bop or hard bop at this session, rather than just doodling around. But, we have all of Roy's recordings from the classic era to listen to.
Tom Scott I actually went back and added Sonny’s name before I read you comment here. But yes Roy and Sonny, it’s like a miracle that we have these to guys with us today. I hope they both live to 100!
I always meant to at least shake Roy's hand or my other idol... Sonny Rollins. I've seen both so many times, and just appreciate their creativity and longevity.
@@strictlyjazzsoundspodcast Isn't it something that Sonny's personality and conversational skills are equivalent to his creative thinking about music! You were very lucky. People like Rollins have so much to tell.
I started listening to Jazz in the early 70s, when I was beginning to get a bit bored with Rock, and I “discovered” Roy Haynes and loved his drumming. He’s been 1 of my fave drummers ever since, and when I bought his album, “The Fountain of Youth” about 15 years ago, he was already 80 yrs old and I was greatly impressed. And, now what?!! I’m listening to and looking at him still playing at 95, for crisis sake!
I saw Roy back in the 70s at Stony Brook University in a one man show. He tapped danced and played the drums. I was too young to appreciate it at that time but I get it now. Thank You Roy🥁👍
He’s played with the very best Jazz-Icons over the last 75 years. Roy ‘Snap Crackle’ Haynes will turn next month, in mid-March, 96!! Amazing drummer. Saw him only once at a live-gig in the mid 70’s. Incredible performance. Wishing Roy many more - Snap Crackle - good years! Dig & Cheers!
The master at his game. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him live at JALC together with Wynton Marsalis some years ago and it was the absolute best time of my life. Consider yourself lucky for experiencing this live.
He’s so wonderful - and still with us - thank you God. I’m a drummer and really appreciate this - he’s playing some REAL stuff here, maybe a bit slower than before but King Roy is ON IT here - and kudos to his GREAT quartetmates while we’re at it: King Jaleel, King Wong, and King Martin Bejerano. -Greg Burrows
Ignore the virohoax, Frank. Here is the escape "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) "The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23) "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and ... he was buried, and ... he rose again the third day according to the scriptures." (I Corinthians 15:3-4) "The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." (I John 1:7) "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." (Acts 16:31)
I saw one of the gigs that Roy played that week at the Blue Note. He and the band were totally awesome! So cool to see how Roy Haynes was just as funky a drummer at 93 as he was in the early days of his musical career. ✨🤎🥁✨
I am sure we all know the treasure that is Roy Haynes.. the Rosetta Stone of drumming.. the alpha with no omega.. Met the man one time in NYC 1975 backstage when jazz was not the 'thing'.. He said he felt like the scene had moved on without him.. Turns out that he's been light years ahead all along.. I am 67 and I can attest on every level this is the man.. the catalyst.. the master.
Not to sound condescending, but old age is just the lucky combination of a lot of factors coming together, not an achievement in itself. Mr. Haynes is (or should be) a legend of the drumming community. What that 94-year-old pulls of in this performance is a gift (and add some vanity here which is okay). THUMBS UP.
on drums, or any other instrument you can do what you never will doing with a woman !!!! if all women beat, blow, scratch instrument, the world get better and better !!!
Everyone who has ever played with Roy Haynes, sounds better. Jaleel Shaw, Marcus Strickland, Martin Bejerano, Dave Kikoski, Kenny Garrett, the late Roy Hargrove...the list goes on.
Posting this on April 3rd 2020...Does anyone know how Roy is doing? He's 95 years old and hunkered down. Food, medicine may be essential for him. Anyone maybe contact him?
Wonderful performance! The list of music is... 1. Bemsha Swing (Monk) 2. James (Metheny) (two different performances) 3. Green Chimneys (Monk) 4. Question and Answer (Metheny)
STILL impeccably dressed!! Roy invited me into into the dressing room of The Playbill Lounge, East/Orange/NewArk, N.J. back in the mid 70's; told me to look inside one of his drum cases. Loaded w/ raw nuts. "This is what's going to keep me going until I'm 100." His older brother as I recall, had serious longevity, too. I wanna have that kinda energy someday.
Awesome.
Happy 99th B Day, Mr Roy Haynes.
Sir...
Hugs from Lisbon.

May your soul rest in peace Mr. Haynes. Thanks for the music
Roy Haynes the Drum master who has played in every era of JAZZ and still keeping time sharply!
He's 53 years older than the second oldest member in the band. And he's giving these cats a run for their money. How crazy is that.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. ROY HAYNES! GOD BLESS YOU!
Today marks exactly 96 years old the legendary drummer Roy Haynes!
Living Legend
wow i can`t believe he´s 95 and still jamming
50年前(1971年)私が高校生だった時に彼のサインをもらいました。50年後もこうして演奏しているなんて素晴らしいの一言です。
I interviewed him at 85 years old and I thought that was a big deal then! He’s a singular force of nature!
I always meant to at least shake Roy's hand or my other idol... Sonny Rollins. I've seen both so many times, and just appreciate their creativity and longevity.
I interviewed Sonny Rollins as well. It was as intriguing and fun as it could be. Both are living legends. The few remaining from an era gone by.
@@strictlyjazzsoundspodcast Isn't it something that Sonny's personality and conversational skills are equivalent to his creative thinking about music! You were very lucky. People like Rollins have so much to tell.
may he rest in peace/ condolences to his family and friends.

this is very condescending
Incredible he’s around 94 here, a relic from the Bebop Era
He has really lived through every age of jazz. Walking history!
If it wasn't for the drums, he probably would have passed away years ago. Drumming keeps you alive!
Helps the mind and body for sure.
Good point.
It would be great to chat with Roy.
John Bonham, Neil Pert, Ginger Baker and all of Spinal Tap's drummers would like to disagree.... but they can't. They dead.
on drums, or any other instrument you can do what you never will doing with a woman !!!! if all women beat, blow, scratch instrument, the world get better and better !!!
Maestro RH still got in good time on his ages! May he stay healthy and happily! Greetings from Jazzman Kuala Lumpur.
God bless Mr. Roy Haynes ! This is the very reason I play the drums and love it! Thanks for sharing this video!
