Roy Haines is a living legend of world jazz. Born March 13, 1925.
Boston, Massachusetts.
Lester Young, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughn, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and this is not a complete list of the star performers with whom Roy Haines worked. And now, in his 95 years, Roy is full of energy!

I was fortunate that I had witnessed this performance! I shot this video at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York. That was awesome!
I think about Roy Haynes a lot. It’s just incredible to think there’s a man still walking this earth who played in Charlie Parker’s band. Along with Sonny Rollins, he’s the last living link to that era.

I wish they had played some bop or hard bop at this session, rather than just doodling around. But, we have all of Roy's recordings from the classic era to listen to.
Tom Scott I actually went back and added Sonny’s name before I read you comment here. But yes Roy and Sonny, it’s like a miracle that we have these to guys with us today. I hope they both live to 100!

I interviewed him at 85 years old and I thought that was a big deal then! He’s a singular force of nature!
I always meant to at least shake Roy's hand or my other idol... Sonny Rollins. I've seen both so many times, and just appreciate their creativity and longevity.
I interviewed Sonny Rollins as well. It was as intriguing and fun as it could be. Both are living legends. The few remaining from an era gone by.

I saw Roy back in the 70s at Stony Brook University in a one man show. He tapped danced and played the drums. I was too young to appreciate it at that time but I get it now. Thank You Roy🥁👍

He’s played with the very best Jazz-Icons over the last 75 years. Roy ‘Snap Crackle’ Haynes will turn next month, in mid-March, 96!! Amazing drummer. Saw him only once at a live-gig in the mid 70’s. Incredible performance. Wishing Roy many more - Snap Crackle - good years! Dig & Cheers!

I saw one of the gigs that Roy played that week at the Blue Note. He and the band were totally awesome! So cool to see how Roy Haynes was just as funky a drummer at 93 as he was in the early days of his musical career. ✨🤎🥁✨

The master at his game. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him live at JALC together with Wynton Marsalis some years ago and it was the absolute best time of my life. Consider yourself lucky for experiencing this live.
He's 53 years older than the second oldest member in the band. And he's giving these cats a run for their money. How crazy is that.

Posting this on April 3rd 2020...Does anyone know how Roy is doing? He's 95 years old and hunkered down. Food, medicine may be essential for him. Anyone maybe contact him?

Why couldn't the cameraperson move to unobstructed vantage point? Throughout the video, the view of Haynes' kit was obstructed by someone's head. Or the cameraperson could have said, "Excuse me, but could you please move over to the left, you're obstructing the camera? Thank you."
I would guess that this person did not have permission to make the video, therefore wishing to be as unobtrusive as possible. Typically, an announcement is made before shows stating that video and audio recording is prohibited.
I could not move anywhere, firstly, since all the seats were occupied, and secondly, before the performance, everyone was warned not to be filmed ... BUT))) Thanks

I started listening to Jazz in the early 70s, when I was beginning to get a bit bored with Rock, and I “discovered” Roy Haynes and loved his drumming. He’s been 1 of my fave drummers ever since, and when I bought his album, “The Fountain of Youth” about 15 years ago, he was already 80 yrs old and I was greatly impressed. And, now what?!! I’m listening to and looking at him still playing at 95, for crisis sake!
If it wasn't for the drums, he probably would have passed away years ago. Drumming keeps you alive!

STILL impeccably dressed!! Roy invited me into into the dressing room of The Playbill Lounge, East/Orange/NewArk, N.J. back in the mid 70's; told me to look inside one of his drum cases. Loaded w/ raw nuts. "This is what's going to keep me going until I'm 100." His older brother as I recall, had serious longevity, too. I wanna have that kinda energy someday.
