Lamb of God's Mark Morton: 5 Riffs I'm Most Proud Of

- In the premiere episode of “5 Riffs I’m Most Proud Of” - in which guitarists discuss the five favorite riffs they’ve ever written - Lamb of God axman Mark Morton (whose debut solo record, 'Anesthetic,' drops on March 1st via Spinefarm Records) tells us the origin stories of the riffs he’s most proud of, from "Cross Off" to "Descending." “It’s a tough crowd there, in the Lamb of God writing sessions,” Morton reveals. “‘Descending’ was a big stinker at the beginning that caused problems. [Laughs] So now whenever we play it live, I take a certain unique sense of pride in seeing the front row singing it all back to us because I’m like, ‘See? I told you guys this was a banger.’” Watch the video to find out the rest of his picks.
Who's idea was it to NOT add samples of the riffs as they were mentioned!?
thats wtf I'm saying.
Whose*
sorry this video is for LOG fans, you dont need to watch this video if you dont know their music
@@edgesince84 I have brought shame on my family, and will leave it un-edited for the world to see. It's what I deserve...
@@latanezimbardo7129 Oh sorry bud. I didn't realise there was a finite amount of members that could join the LOG fan-club. I'm absolutely gutted they've already reached capacity!
(PS: I have all their albums and know how the riffs go. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be a good idea to share them in this video xx)
Five riffs I'm proud of, but you can't hear them for this segment
5 riffs I'm proud of but you have to actually listen to our music
"Tune in next week" lol
really? you couldnt hear the songs playing?
...oh wait, thats just my Mind, 'playing' the songs as he named them...
copyright, brah.
Im just happy to know that he is proud
Love how on the dvds the guys in Lamb of God always give him shit over his riffs when he brings them in, and it's almost always the best songs on the album.
willie has better riffs sorry bro mark is a better all around guitarist but willie's riffs are just nasty
@@muhammadosama4383 Someone has been drinking early this morning. The Blues licks Mark throws in are nasty!! Willie is a hell of a player. I won't knock him at all. But Mark is more blues and off the cuff oriented. Willie doesnt have that in his arsenal. But both in 1 band is absolutely insane! And the reason L.O.G is on another level.
like descending
Descending is hands down my favorite song. Its super heavy and fast as a whole.
@@69moparty JT Fett I haven't been drinking thank you , that is not a way to address a stranger , you americans , address me with respect like i addressed you , don't lecture me about log they are my all time favorite band , i know every piece of music they made like the back of my hand , you were speaking about riffs then when replied to my reply you said blues licks ? what are we talking about here ? you said riffs , i said willie is absolutely better in the riff department , he is the one who shaped log's sound , mark has the lead thing to take care , nasty blues licks and solos and everything and together they make log , i love mark , mark is absolutely amazing , he is probably my favorite guitarist too , but it's hard to choose between them both , because i am a rhythm guitar player so i tend to love willie a bit more , last thing you better apologize for the way you spoke to me or just don't reply to this , thank you stay an asshole sir have a good day
The entire Ashes of the Wake and Sacrament albums are full of such gems especially when it comes to the guitar work
I second this
and Wrath. Definitely rivals Sacrament as my favorite LOG album.
I agree, but I have include as the palaces burn. I feel it's an underrated album.
@@pickledcottoncandy ATPB is the best to me. I remember when I first heard Ruin... it sounded like no other metal band. That raw sound left with Ashes which is a lot more purified. To most people it 'sounds better' because it's more defined and thick. ATPB has a very unique brutalness to it. Just like At the Gates with Slaughter of the Soul... there's nothing else like it.
This is why they're one of my favourite bands. I don't think they've ever released a bad album. There aren't even many bad songs in their entire back catalogue.
>Morton mentions riff
>riff starts playing in my head
Our Father Thy will be doooonnnnneeeeeee
Hell yeah!
Lord forbid you don't play any snippets of these songs/riffs to get us in the mood with your vid......smdh......
serious wtf
wish they did
Take it up with their lawyers and accountants who didn't want to pay the licensing for the music.
@@thetruestein2530 Could they show live footage though? I see a lot of channels do that
@@djcj I'm not sure of the legalities, and I rarely follow Revolver links from Facebook to here, so I don't know how they've done in the past. But since the videos are copyrighted material, maybe Revolver is just being cheap here and not wanting to pay the fees.
Mark is so smart, nice and shy guy. I couldnt believe he wrote all of those killer riffs!
He is one of the bests, definitely!
The walk with me in hell riff is on another level. So damn good
Knew he was going to mention Ruin. That breakdown is just sublime and nasty.
its a awsome song
Mark is riff master for sure and especially when playing w/ Willie, Lamb of God have crafted of the best riffs. One of my favorite duos, can't wait to hear Mark's solo album!
I love Descending, fav song off of Sacrament.
Best song ever.
Great song. 2nd fav off that album to Blacken the Cursed Sun.
"Better to die quick fighting on your feet, than to live forever begging on your knees."
@@Strik.9 Hell yeah BTCS kicks ass!
the vocals randy delivers are so fucking amazing too
It's my favorite Lamb of God song.
Confirmed! Muse inspired a Lamb Of God riff! Who knew!?
90% Sure it was Stockholm Syndrome the song, very similar riff kinda
Yeah I was thinking Stockholm Syndrome as well. Still eas surprised to hear Mark mention Muse.
@@veetiaaltonen5442 Yeah I agree, I also thought Stockholm Syndrome.
Im thinking hysteria the bass in the beginning sounds familiar to the beginning of wwmih
Definitely Stockholm syndrome
mark and willie somehow over 10 years managed the 1st full body swap
🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭
Holy shit
😂😂🤭🤭
Hes like mic tompson now
Mark you beautiful human being ! keep doing what you are doing cuz you are killing it !!!
I think the Muse song that was referenced in the first riff is "Hysteria", probably he took inspiration on the Bass line of this song
pretty good
I only listen to Lamb Of God occasionally but this dude is one of the best riff writers I know, there are at least a dozen songs that have blown my head clean off with the creative riffing
Grace on the acoustic is my favorite riff! Then Vigil, and Laid to Rest. Omerta is right up there too. Love this dude!! Met him in St.Louis after an amazing show. Super Humble and without question my favorite guitar player! Waiting on the Aesthetic preorder to ship!
Your opinion is the correct one.
Grace is imo the best LoG song there is. Followed closely by Walk with me in hell...
So many kick ass riffs, I love the main riff from "To the end" off resolution.
Vigil is one of my favorite tunes, ever.
Descending has always been a favorite of mine. I went through a very dark chapter in my life where I attempted to end myself through alcohol and it was basically my self-proclaimed theme song. It is very deep and dark and off-kilter for them as a band.
Glad you pulled thru 👍 🤘🤘
This would been cool if u played the riffs... Each one of these songs has like a dozen riffs in it
Sacrament in my opinion is one of the best albums of this century
And I think is really underrated.
Almost won a grammy
Ashes is top 10 metal albums of all time idgaf who tries to argue. That album encompasses everything metal should be and stands for.
Ashes of wake and Sacrament. I can never thank for both of the masterpiece
Great interview. I really appreciate the historical references to Mark's influences. I never knew he would be such a great interview and so down to earth. I love the same bands he does but would never consider him saying so. Really enjoyed this interview. Thank You! Seen him many times in the past, and god willing more in the future!
I knew mark would never mention Grace but its my favourite song it has great intro, riffs and an amazing solo ..a beautiful masterpiece..
Because Chris’s drumming on that song was phenomenal. Sounds like a typical LoG song but listening closely the drums on Grace was just so good
“Well it’s Slither, so it makes sense that you would like it.” 😂😂
Mark and Willie are riff machines. Legends
Willie is great at adding harmonies.
I could listen to you talk about riffs anytime , such a amazing artist
Descending is one of my all time favorite LOG tracks. So take pride in it sir. What a legendary riff.
Who else heard the riffs in their head as he talked about them?
Descending and Laid to Rest, in my opinion, are the Lamb of God's masterpieces... Those two songs are just PERFECT!
Havent seen the video yet but LEGENDARY guitar player.
Remorse is for the dead is always a favorite
Not sure what classifications define a riff for Mark and what makes one better than the other (he's ingenious, imo, like a new age Toni Iommi), but I absolutely love his guitar playing in Subtle Arts and they killed it on Killadelphia. That breakdown at the end is their heaviest riff, imo.
Yasssssssssssssssss
Really loved his playing style, His riffs are Amazing.
First song i ever heard from them was grace and never turned back.
What a great song to start out on
Great video. One of my favorites has always been the end of “A Warning”. I’ve always thought the staccato rhythm that builds up step by step and then reverses itself was particularly clever. Plus the cowbell. Oh that cowbell... finally get to see you at Rockville this year!
Really take a step back and think about the amount of musical and artistic talent present in Lamb of God, yes even with Art who's a beast on the sticks.
Man I love Mark one of the most underrated guitarists in metal
Ashes of the wake is a creative masterpiece, every song riff is absoultely mind blowing.
I'm getting goosebumps everytime I hear mark 🤘😊
Man, this guy and Willie really just swiched bodies, huh.
anton sandholm I thought the same thing lmao
It looks like he's got no neck anymore. Just a head on shoulders ^^
@@lorismartial1832 his traps are _that_ big,
Thanks for ruining the video... thanks.... he's a human being and you're dirty ass belongs in afghanistan selling soccer balls.
Dude I been sitting here trying to figure out why this doesn't look like Mark at all to me and I think you just told me lol
Bro you are I favorite guitarist lamb of god is great and just thank you
I've seen LOG 10 times live, own most of their records, but still can't just pull up riffs off the top of my head. This is like telling me about painting by doing interpretive dance.
So you have zero memory capacity?
What a comment 😂
11th Hour. Nothing else to say
The outro man! One of my fave outros in metal! The switching of guitars on 2 channel and drums. Simple but tasty and dirty as f!
Varo Andrés Will wrote 11th hour.
Fuck yeah ...
I still wonder how the fk they came up with that second part of that song.
How is possible that song starts sooo fucking strong,... and constantly builds the whole way? It literally builds from beginning and doesn't stop til it explodes.
So glad descending is on this. My favorite LOG song hands down
What about the riffs from Nightmare Seeker, amazing groove)
Mark Morton is just a mad scientist with the guitar. That’s was got me into Lamb of God. I was almost* as blown away by them as I was when I first heard Pantera.
One of my favorite guitarists ever
i honestly LOVED listening to Descending, its actually the first riff that got me INTO Lamb Of God in the first place! It was in my top 3 songs for the band as a whole.....
Walk With Me In Hell, Descending, Blacken The Cursed Sun.....
playing those 3 songs on guitar was part of my daily warmup routine. Those three songs covered everything I needed to use for warmups, so once I could play all three back to back that I was properly warmed up. You have to have perfect sync between the fretting and picking to get it just right.....
The Muse song he's referencing in regard to Walk With Me In Hell is probably Hysteria or Stockholm Syndrome. The main riffs definitely have a lot of up and down the neck.
The Muse is underrated as band. The lead singer is a shredder. Knights of Cydonia sold me on Muse.
I think it's stockholm syndrome
@@ilhamalamsyah5713 I think you could also be right. Stockholm literally sounds like a Lamb of God riff.
Wow, dude I though so at first, but then comparing it with Slither I couldn't match it... Went down a couple of songs and ended with the verdict; 'Thoughts Of A Dying Ateist'. Just try to blend the riffs with an audio editor, comes out near perfect I think...
@@69moparty theyre hardly underrated, but I totally agree with Matt being a shredder. Him and chris are monsters.
Seen you live a bunch of times now. With Slayer in Laval QC. Was hoping you were coming with them to heavy Montreal this summer.
Imagine being so good at guitar that a riff you were just using to warm up with turns into one of your band’s top 5 songs.
Where is the "The Faded Line"?
Maybe it was more of Will Adler... But i agree
@@lorismartial1832 i didn't know that, thanx
My first question as well
Hourglass.
That whole album including ATPB is riff nation
I’m glad he said vigil..!!! One of my favorite songs ever...a fucking beast of a track..!!!
He was definitely talking about Hysteria when he mentioned Muse. Same end of the riff
I'm a huge fan of Lamb Of God, but I totally admire Mark Morton, he always comes out with the most brillant riffs & solos of metal nowdays.
Mark do what you love Man, and tell the rest of the band, that you are the greatest fucking metal band today!!! "L.O.G."
Thank you for all your music, I enjoy it throughly!!! 😎👍
When he brought up how walk with me in hell first was a warmup, that’s how the sweet child intro came to be as well
Vigil for sure my favorite
Got some serious love for this guy.hes always just been himself where ever u see him.
I had read a bunch about Lamb Of God around the time Palaces came out. Then I saw the video for Ruin on Headbangers. I knew instantly what all the hype was about.
I am proud to have the exact same taste as M. Mark Morton, those are also my favourite riffs from LoG (along with the starting one from Embers).
Good thing I know literally every Lamb of God song like the back of my hand.
Dude that's awesome that he draws inspiration from Soundgarden
Love Descending!
Wow Mark Morton is so wholesome
Mark and Willie were there right when I needed them the most. When Dimebag died, Lamb Of God was there. Couldn't have been a better time for them to take over!!
Vigil is still one of my faves!
Oh and cross of with Chester is such an amazing song.. Chester definitely showed his talent in this song and I just with they could have done a full album together or even started a side project band.
His solo album came out on my birthday already, March 1st?
*_FFFUUUUUUU...!!!_*
Mark is the most important part of Lamb of God. The band would lose sooooo much without his songwriting.
Walk with me in hell is probably my all time favorite lamb of god song.. ashes of the wake is probably my favorite album but that song is so fuckin hard
CHESTER!!! Good stuff man.
alot of marks favorites that barely made it are definitely my favs
The Ashes of the Wake album accounted for many enemy KIA in Iraq and Afghanistan during my three tours.
As the palaces burn album is my favorite. Ashes of the wake and sacrament are great too, but As the Palaces Burn is very unique in it's riffs and lyrics content. I love As the palaces burn, ruin, Vigil, and Boot Scraper so much. The express a sort of under class rage that is so relatable right now. I mean that rage has always been relatable in any class society, but I think a lot of working class people could listen to Boot Scraper for instance and be like, hey maybe it is time to turn and bite that hand that's bleeding us dry. Vigil is a supreme expression of this in my view. That section "Sickness to you my master!" gives me chills to this day. So powerful and radical.
Grace is my favorite one ❤️
Without a doubt! That whole song is so all over the place and so well put together. Itll always be my favorite.
Beautiful song
My 2 favorite riffs ever written...
2. GRACE intro
1. FLOODS outro
Some of my favorite Lamb of God riffs:
Pariah
Blood Junkie
Break You
I can go on and on. This guy is a riff machine.
You have some pretty tasty riffs yourself!
Letter to the Unborn
I fucking love Mark what a god damn legend in metal
All 4 (sorry idk the independent song) of my favorite songs, I have some others but I always knew mark spearheaded these songs and I'm proud to know I was right
Cross Off is an awesome song
Plug In Baby is my guess for the Muse song he's talking about at the beginning.
1:05 The Muse song he is referring to is most likely Hysteria off the album Absolution
It's pretty awesome Mark was influenced by Muse, Soundgarden & Velvet Revolver for writing LOG riff's. Love their new song Nevermore! \m/
Beating on Deaths Door riffs vocals everything on that song is sick
i was checking guitars in thomann,de one day and in the main page was a song called walk with me in hell playing , i walk with you since.
Man's been having a few burgers. Love his work.
5 favorite riffs I ate.
I just opened a tab with the songs playing behing him :P
5 of the best looking dishes I've ever made that I'm most proud of, followed by a cook describing what they look like and how they cooked it. Make it happen Revolver.
laid to rest is also super similar to slither too that’s pretty dope.
my favorite 5 riffs are 1. opening to 11th hour. 2. blood of the scribe 3. break you. 4. for your malice 5. now you've got somethign to die for... he has inspired every song i've written, from what i've learned from playing his music and chris adler's work from those two albums. like descending, mozart would use a melody in different ways, and its fun to use a bridge or riff that develops the song in different ways, though you are playing the same thing over again.
Break you is sick
King Me, In Your Words, Straight For The Sun. I was hoping he'd include at least one of these 3.
You know he wrote the ending to In Your Words?
@@brianwillis8447 that ending still sends chills down my spine, after all these years.
Love ashes of the wake and sacrament every song on both albums is a banger
Mork Martin
Mart Merkin
Vigil is a beast of a song
mark is the reason why we even know who this band is. I cant wait for his solo blues project when LOG calls it quits
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I knew it, hysteria muse influenced walk with me in hell riffs.
Who's idea was 11th hour because out of every riff, so many I love, there are some in that song that kill.
The song from muse he spoke about is hysteria... the shape of the riff is almost the same
