Paul McCartney and his wife Linda McCartney formed the band Wings in 1971 (post Beatles), and this song was released in 1976. Linda was a professional photographer when she met Paul. They were married for 29 years. She died of breast cancer in 1998.
I gotta say, Paul McCartney is my favorite bass player. Every bass line he has ever done was perfect for the song. He is, also, quite skilled on just about every other instrument. Great songwriter. Massive talent, all around.
The reason he wrote this song was because John Lennon made fun of him, that all he ever did was silly love songs. So Paul wrote this as an answer to Lennon's swipe at him. (The woman harmonizing is Paul's beautiful wife, Linda McCartney). Also, McCartney is well known as being the best Bass Player in the world, bar none. That's the gospel truth.
Paul is definitely not the best bass player, but he is very much a pioneer in the innovativeness of the instrument. His bass lines are instantly recognizable and that's only a small testament to him as a musician. Long live Sir Paul!
The original recording was never released...the one that acheived top 10 success was the live version performed with Wings and released on Wings Over America.
Along with John Lennon and, often, George Harrison... I wonder how fantastic it would have been if you had three of The World's Greatest Songwriters all born at the same time, in the same plaCE. They should have formed a Band....
Whatever his merits, I think Paul over his career has brought more joy to more people than any other artist, and probably had more joy doing it. Not bad for a lad from Liverpool.
Sir Paul is one of the greatest musician's of all time. Song writer, singer, bass player.. there's no one like him. Wrote or co-wrote many of the greatest songs ever created.
And guitar player...the man is a true musician. He only started playing bass in the Beatles out of necessity as Stu Sutcliffe quit the band and they already had 3 guitar players. John and George were not switching to bass, so Paul picked it up. His bass lines have always had a melodic feel to it because of his rhythm guitar playing
During an interview, it was Yoko Ono that said "All Paul does are silly love songs." So in response, Paul wrote this. Listen for the line when Paul sings "I look around me and I see it isn't so, Ono." Jamel, if you like the bass in this tune, you'll love the bass in the Wings song "Letting Go." Give it a listen!
This was the number one song for the YEAR in 1976. "You'd think that people would've had enough of silllllly love songs, I look around me and I seeeeeeeeee it isn't so!" One of the most iconic lyrics of the soundtrack of my life! McCartney gets a lot of flak, but he is the GOATiest songwriter EVER!!!!! Plus, he is the best bassist ever in rock music.❤🖤❤🖤❤🖤❤🖤❤🖤
Quite possibly one of the cleanest bass riffs Paul ever wrote. This has always been one of my favorite Wings songs. Just a beautiful song harmonically and instrumentally. I've always been a big fan of Paul McCartney. He's definitely one of the greatest artists of all time.

Check out McCartney's "Someone's Knocking at the Door", "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", "Maybe I'm Amazed" and of course "Band on the Run". He was kind of slagging Lennon who said Paul only wrote love songs. For other songs of the Beatles attacking each other check out Paul McCartney's "Too Many People", John Lennon's "How do you Sleep at Night", George Harrison's "Sue Me, Sue You Blues" and Ringo Starr's "Early 1970". Of course, Lennon goes way under the belt.
Also, "Jr.'s Farm" and "Lovely Linda" and "Venus and Mars" and "Jets" and "Let Me Roll It" and just about everything they did. Love all their albums including Londontown, Bowl of Cherries, McCartney, Wings Over America, etc.
Yes this was a clever, catchy McCartney tune that only he could write, weaving 3 different snippets together for the chorus with a snappy horn section. It's him at his writing best. When I was in England I heard some children singing along to this, "I love you." So cute, not silly at all.
Hearing vicariously through new ears: Watching folks listen to incredible songs for the first time is as close as it gets to hearing them for the first time again, for me.
The story behind this song is that John Lennon, in an interview, said that Paul could be working to change the world with his music, but was, instead, frittering away his time, talent, and energy on silly love songs. This was Paul's response.
Great job Jamel with your review of this masterpiece song. I'm a 70's kid and remember in summer of 1976 when this song was played all the time on the radio. It was my favorite song then and I still love it just as much. This song is very special to me. Great memories!

Paul proved time and time again after the Beatles that he had many more songs in him. It's such a simple song at its core but you can find new elements every time you listen.
"Silly Love Songs" was a gigantic hit back when. It topped the charts at number one and went on to become the song of 1976. I heard it on the radio so often back then that I can still hear it playing in my head whenever I want to -- that bass line, the melody, those harmonies, the disco strings, the horn riffs. Even so, new things stand out to me when I listen to it now, like the piano section towards the end. The first vinyl record I ever bought back when I was a kid was "Wings Greatest", a 1978 compilation album featuring several of the bands greatest hits, in large part because it included this song, but also because of "Band on the Run", "Live and Let Die", "Jet", and others. McCartney wrote "Silly Love Songs" to laugh off the critics who complained that he only wrote lightweight love songs.
Yes! More Wings! Mull of Kintyre was at one point the best selling song ever in the UK, but there's about 20 real classics with McCartney's post - Beatles era. Admiral Halsey /Band on the Run/My Love/Maybe I'm Amazed /Live and Let Die /etc etc etc
Yes, and don't forget about Somedays, Heaven On A Sunday, Little Willow, Souvenir, When Winter Comes, Jenny Wren, Beautiful Night, Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five, Golden Earth Girl, Flaming Pie, The World Tonight, I Don't Know, 3 Legs, Heart Of The Country, Tug Of War, Friends To Go, I Want To Come Home, Once Upon A Long Ago, House Of Wax, Lonely Road, Rinse The Raindrops, Spinning On An Axis, Back In The Sunshine Again, She's Given Up Talking, Old Siam Sir, Love In Song, Comfort Of Love and Lunchbox/Odd Sox. To name a few 😁

100%. I was born in '65. while i was certainly aware of the Beatles as a young boy (and grew to fully appreciate them once I got older), Wings was one of MY favorite bands, hitting their popularity just as I was hitting adolescence. Hearing these songs brings back memories of running through y best friend's backyard, riding our bikes until the sun went down and drinking water from the garden hose. Such great memories, such amazing times!
The title of the song is Here Today, on the album Tug of War. The title track for Tug of War is gorgeous, and I beieve it's very clearly about John as well.
@@loosilu You're right. You can find the video on UA-cam if you search for either title. I was at a McCartney concert and he showed the slideshow while singing it. Many people had tears streaming.

Wings, the band that Paul formed after split of The Beatles. Wings at The Speed of Sound, the album featuring this magnificent piece of music, along another terrific one: "Let´em In". The horns section, along Paul´s bass lines and drumming back bone beat, so remarkable.
The phrase "Silly Love Songs" comes from John Lennon and echoed by music critics throughout Paul's career saying that's all he could write. His love songs are fantastic though, especially "And I Love Her" and "Here, There, and Everywhere" with the Beatles and "My Love," "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Listen to what the Man Says" as a solo artist.
This was the song that made me want to play the bass. Been doing it nearly every day since. So 40+ years of my life are rolled into this silly little song. Wouldn't change a thing.
I'm sure there will be plenty of people who will tell you that this song came out in 1976, not 1967. That's an honest transposing of numbers. A LOT happened in those 9 years. A lot of people dislike this song - but you are absolutely right: that bass makes this song. I also love all those sections. I sing this song to my daughters, trying to get them to sleep every now and then. I think some people are short-sighted when it comes to the merits of this song.

Actually it couldn't have been in 67 the Beatles were still together. Paul McCartney and wings played in the 70's and he did some solo work in the 80's. The lady singing in the background was his wife Linda which he lost to cancer. He was a good family man he was married to the love of his life for years and had his children with Linda.
@@SeanVedell - I play keyboards and sing at the same time, so I am well aware of this fact. However, my point is that it takes talent, not that there aren't other talented musicians who sing.

I am 61 and when I was 16, an old school friend and I went to see Paul McCartney and Wings in May of 1976 at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island on a Magical Bus tour from Buffalo to see the band on the Wings over America Tour. We stayed at Times Square for two nights and when the Bus was entering the NY City area that friday morning after a fun overnight party, the bus driver turned on the radio and the DJ came on the airwaves and said "#1 song this week in NYC is Silly Little Love Songs". Everyone on the bus cheered. We had floor seats at the arena. That concert is one of my favorite concerts of all time. He performed that song live. Since that time, every time I hear this song, it reminds of that day on the bus entering the Big Apple on that excellent weekend. The bus ride, two nights stay at a hotel in the theatre district plus floor seats to the concert only cost us 97 dollars each since a new rock station in Buffalo called 97 Rock was sponsoring our bus ride. and I distinctly remember the day she died. I was in the hospital with a very bad pneumonia and so very sick.. you know when you are that sick, you tend to get emotional and I remember balling my eyes out for a woman that I never knew, but their music was something that I grew up with. It’s “bawling”. “Balling” is _not_ the word you want. ;)
Paul McCartney and his wife Linda McCartney formed the band Wings in 1971 (post Beatles), and this song was released in 1976. Linda was a professional photographer when she met Paul. They were married for 29 years. She died of breast cancer in 1998.
it's a love song to love songs. He is singing a love song to love songs.
I gotta say, Paul McCartney is my favorite bass player. Every bass line he has ever done was perfect for the song. He is, also, quite skilled on just about every other instrument. Great songwriter. Massive talent, all around.
This guy could just write a damn melody. Master
three melodies. AT THE SAME TIME
MACCA!
RIP to Linda McCartney. I shed a tear everytime I see her and hear her singing 😭
The reason he wrote this song was
because John Lennon made fun of
him, that all he ever did was silly love
songs. So Paul wrote this as an answer
to Lennon's swipe at him. (The woman
harmonizing is Paul's beautiful wife,
Linda McCartney). Also, McCartney is
well known as being the best Bass
Player in the world, bar none.
That's the gospel truth.
I was wondering if anyone in the comments section would mention this
@@jeremycole3008 I know I was about to! :)
Paul is definitely not the best bass player, but he is very much a pioneer in the innovativeness of the instrument. His bass lines are instantly recognizable and that's only a small testament to him as a musician. Long live Sir Paul!
I teach kindergarteners how to read using Beatle Music. It is heartwarming to watch five year olds do their school work singing I loooooove yoooooou
That is very very cool
Another Wings hit you should do is "Maybe I'm Amazed"
The live version especially.
That one's actually solo McCartney pre-Wings. Awesome song.
The original recording was never released...the one that acheived top 10 success was the live version performed with Wings and released on Wings Over America.
Let them in.
Or band on the run
The greatest songwriter there has ever been and ever will be.
Along with John Lennon and, often, George Harrison...
I wonder how fantastic it would have been if you had three of The World's Greatest Songwriters all born at the same time, in the same plaCE.
They should have formed a Band....
The bass is the lead instrument. The production and the engineering on this song is epic.
That woman is Linda McCartney, Paul’s late wife. This song IMO is the best one they did….but then there’s Maybe I’m Amazed….
They have one of the great love stories in rock. My heart broke for him when she passed.
“Maybe I’m Amazed” is even better than this song, in my opinion.
@@beachgirl4583 That can certainly be argued, but "Maybe I'm Amazed" is certainly more earnest. And it IS a great song.
Love this song. Makes me sad for Paul that Linda passed so young.
So true, they had the greatest love story ever. Really was so sad when she died.
It did seem like they truly were soulmates.
I think "Silly Love Songs" is the most perfect pop song ever released. The bass, horns, strings, drums & three part harmony. Everything is spot on.
That's a really bold statement...and yet I can't disagree. It's a truly incredible song, musically, lyrically, and emotionally.
Whatever his merits, I think Paul over his career has brought more joy to more people than any other artist, and probably had more joy doing it. Not bad for a lad from Liverpool.
I think you may be right. Never thought about that
He's not the most successful songwriter in the history of the world for nothing.
His carpool karaoke from a few years ago is a joy to watch
I think you’re on to something!
He’s the ultimate class act!
Paul and Linda's three daughters are seen as well. They toured with them. He was a real family man
Paul McCartney & Wings - Band On The Run is another good hit.
Band on the Run is THE jam!!!🔥🔥
The whole Album is amazing!
One of my all time favorite gems
Band on the Run is the song that introduced me to rock and roll back in 1974. My sisters had the radio on all the time and it was on all day everyday.
Paul crushes bass lines on Wings' "Nineteen Eighty Five".
Band on The Run's a good one too.
1985 was the B side of Band on the Run 45
And as always- Paul kills it on bass because he’s the most melodic bass player around.
Wife Linda singing backup! RIP
"That woman harmonizing" was Linda, his VERY long time wife. They were rarely apart, until she died. A true love song.
Sir Paul is one of the greatest musician's of all time. Song writer, singer, bass player.. there's no one like him. Wrote or co-wrote many of the greatest songs ever created.
"One of" the greatest?!?
It's Sir Paul. He's not 'one of' -- He is The greatest.
;)
Drummer too
And piano
And guitar player...the man is a true musician. He only started playing bass in the Beatles out of necessity as Stu Sutcliffe quit the band and they already had 3 guitar players. John and George were not switching to bass, so Paul picked it up. His bass lines have always had a melodic feel to it because of his rhythm guitar playing
The Beatles song "Rain" has always been my favorite song to showcase Paul's bass playing
I just spent some time scouring the internet for any evidence that yoko publicly insulted paul in any way and found none
“That might be one of the bassiest bass...” 😆🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Paul is one of the best bassists to have ever touched the instrument!
This was the number one song for the YEAR in 1976.
"You'd think that people would've had enough of silllllly love songs,
I look around me and I seeeeeeeeee

Check out McCartney's "Someone's Knocking at the Door", "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", "Maybe I'm Amazed" and of course "Band on the Run".
He was kind of slagging Lennon who said Paul only wrote love songs. For other songs of the Beatles attacking each other check out Paul McCartney's "Too Many People", John Lennon's "How do you Sleep at Night", George Harrison's "Sue Me, Sue You Blues" and Ringo Starr's "Early 1970". Of course, Lennon goes way under the belt.

Jamel this was 1976,,
George Harrison's Wah Wah.
Also, "Jr.'s Farm" and "Lovely Linda" and "Venus and Mars" and "Jets" and "Let Me Roll It" and just about everything they did. Love all their albums including Londontown, Bowl of Cherries, McCartney, Wings Over America, etc.
The bass line is what keeps me liking this song I've heard a million times just in the 70s alone! 😁
Yes this was a clever, catchy McCartney tune that only he could write, weaving 3 different snippets together for the chorus with a snappy horn section. It's him at his writing best. When I was in England I heard some children singing along to this, "I love you." So cute, not silly at all.
THREE melodies together. who does that in a pop song?
Hearing vicariously through new ears: Watching folks listen to incredible songs for the first time is as close as it gets to hearing them for the first time again, for me.
"That bass is incredible..."
That bass was Paul McCartney.
My favorite Wings song! What a great, joyful reaction! XO
Jamel must be one of the nicest guys in earth.
God bless you Jamel. May god there are more people like you.

The story behind this song is that John Lennon, in an interview, said that Paul could be working to change the world with his music, but was, instead, frittering away his time, talent, and energy on silly love songs. This was Paul's response.
And this silly love song was the #1 song of 1976
Paul McCartney was known as the "Bass Boss" back in the day. You asked who was singing the harmony, it was his wife Linda.

Me too.💛

Wings, the band that Paul formed after split of The Beatles. Wings at The Speed of Sound, the album featuring this magnificent piece of music, along another terrific one: "Let´em In". The horns section, along Paul´s bass lines and drumming back bone beat, so remarkable.
