I had some intermittent starting problems with my 1999 3rd Gen 4runner so I decided to rebuild my 20 year old starter before it left me stranded! I used brand new OEM parts only since I wanted it to last and be reliable. I go through the removal, rebuild, and reassembly of the starter. If you are just replacing the starter, this video is also helpful for you. Enjoy the video!

just an update that this has been super solid since and never ever had the intermittent no start i had prior to this job.
Hey man I've really enjoyed your channel , damn quality is clear and to the point ! My truck only acts up on cold starts , I replaced with a cheapo remanufactured one I got for $60 and it went away would start no problems , for like a month now problem is back , think it's the starter again ??
I'm planning to work on my starter soon. My question is, would those oem parts be the same for a manual transmission? Enjoy watching your videos very informative and thanks in advance!🤙🏼
I heard they are different? Any updates?
Huge fan of your videos. This was an easy one to follow along to. Now to address why some people are finding it easier to go through the bottom of the vehicle (which in my case it was). If you have a base 2wd or a 4wd w/manual transmission with the 1.4kw starter (vs Phorunner with the 1.8kw starter) its much easier to remove the starter from the bottom. I found that removing the exhaust bracket that's in the way gave me enough access to get to both of the starter bolts without having to use an extension. That top bolt was a PITA though, you'll need a 1/2'' drive. I didn't need to remove a wheel either everything was reachable/removable from underneath if you have the smaller starter. Toyota Part #'s if you have the 1.4kw starter:
Battery Terminal Kit: 28226-22050
Motor Terminal Kit: 28226-74070
Plunger: 28235-55050
Thanks for adding and good tips for sure. My starter is working like a champ still btw!
Man that was absolutely perfect. Especially for dummies like me, every single step, in a perfectly OCD presentation, I loved it. I was laughing a couple times because when I talk to myself (which is every time I work on my Toyota) I say some of the same things. 👍 I bought the kit, just needed to see it done, so a big THANK YOU!
Since we Toyota owners tend to go through the same things (because Toyotas are engineering masterpieces, and are therefore predictable), I subscribed.
Still consider myself a "new" Toyota 'convert', so I'm still learning, having switched to Toyota 9 years ago, after 20 years of GM... (and there is no comparison, imo)
Thanks man, first time I've replaced it. The ol four runner needs love after 320,000 miles of faithful service!!!
Nice. Was it hard to get the starter out?
@PhoRunner Channel not to bad, thanks to you, I did have to go buy some extentions. Thanks again for making the excellent, very descriptive video. You made it easy. Appreciate it.
-east Tennessee.
Nice. Everyone complains about this job and I’m unsure why haha. They said it’s very hard to get the starter out of the wheel well
@@PhoRunner the video I watched right before yours said the wheel well was the ONLY way to get it out. But your video had the rebuild process, presented perfectly for people like me. I'm one of those idiots that spends 4 hours changing a battery, fixing every tiny problem I see along the way. LOL
Awesome video man! Watched a ton of videos before yours and almost decided to just take my car in cause I couldn’t follow the other videos that well. Just finished doing this on my 97 and it starts perfect now. Appreciate the time you take for all these videos. Saved me some money for sure!!
Excellent!
Your channel has been an incredible resource for me and my 4Runner!
Glad I could help
Great video. I just took the time to rebuild mine today. It took me about 3 hours total. That paper you were asking about in the video goes underneath the battery-side contacts. Thanks for making the video, it helped me out a lot.
Interesting. Mines been working great still without it hehe
I like how everything is slow n detail keep it up bro
Some people say I talk too fast lol. Thanks for watching
Awesome video, have watched many this one is the best by far. You the man
Thanks bud
It’s still working solid to this day! Definitely a great way to fix the starter
@@PhoRunner Have done this job 3 times and every time I have to look at utube for reference, its a pain 96 phoRunner 345K, Thanks
Excellent job on the video....saved me hours on figuring out the right combination of tools! Nice set up on the front end. Would you mind sharing the info on the rotors. Looks great.
Just OEM tundra rotors and 231mm tundra 13WL calipers
Thanks! I just noticed the spacers. The blue anodized color looks pretty sharp.
Good video, brother! Thanks!
Thx
Helpful video, crystal clear explained, I'm about to work on my Toyota Fourunner 2000 starter and I wasn't able to catch up parte numbers of the replacement parts, can you post it please, saludos from México!
Check my video description
Question on the starter kit, did you got the serial # on the starter or Vin No of the vehicle to be able to match it correctly for ordering? Thanks.
As always great video! Question I have a 1999 model as well but is 2WD so the parts are the same?
Man you made it look simple.
It actually was pretty easy. I didn’t edit that video much. Haha I got it out and in on 1st try. I did read some suggestions
Take nut of upper control arm then rubber mallet bolt flush with control arm ,Starter motor comes out easier .
How do you like those harbor frieght ratchets? I got a few ratchets but kinda want matching set. Been eyeing them whenever I go windows hopping at HF.
They are awesome haha i use them all the time. Holding up nicely
So I am about to do this job, watched a ton of videos and thought of something while watching everyone to struggle to pull the starter out the wheel well. If you cut your steering wheel all the way to the left, won't it move that control arm giving you more room or does that piece not move when the wheels are turned??
I'm not sure. It was pretty easy to get out for me
hey bro i have a 1997 4runner 2.7. has no power on climbs..
when I accelerate the pedal does not respond quickly, it is difficult to increase the mph.
If you have any ideas I would really appreciate it.
you make good videos and very helpful
Thanks 🙏
A locker won’t help there. A regear or super charger will :)
Great breakdown on a common problem. What is that magnetic light you were using? For a battery light it looked plenty bright.
Hf magnetic light
@@PhoRunner thanks and keep up the videos coming.
What happens if the breather comes? Off. Have anybody had any problems with that and any videos to fix it?
I would assume these part numbers would also work for a tacoma 3.4 auto? Great video!
Most likely as it’s the same engine
I was going to buy a replacement starter, but now I think I’ll try to rebuild mine. Seeing the price tag and recognizing that the non-OEM are 50% junk, I’d rather copy you. I’ve been getting slow starts these cold winter mornings.
Hey any chance you’ll start selling some swag? Stickers or shirts?
Hehe no swag but I’ve been thinking about 4runner gear for the 4runner lovers!!
what year is this vehicle? and can a 20 year old be kept going after 315000 miles
1999 and i don’t see why not
Tell me, where did you order the replacement parts for the rebuild?
ebay or amazon or straight from toyota. I provide the part numbers in the description so they are the QUALITY ones from denso/toyota. Not junk ones!
you can order from camelback toyota parts here: parts.camelbacktoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-plunger-magnet-switch-2823554380
How much was this job? Versus buying an aftermarket starter?
Like $20-$30 max. Probably cheaper if I didn’t buy the plunger. Not sure how much an aftermarket starter is but they are known to be junk hit or miss.
I am hooked up to your channel in just 4 days 🤣 Where did you buy the rims? and what is the size of both the rim & tyres... I would want to have the same for my build-project
Lol. 285/75/17 bfg km3 e load on factory 5th gen 4Runner trd pro wheels. Join a 5th gen marketplace fb group, I’m sure folks are selling them on there or you can buy from the dealer
@@PhoRunner Many thanks for the tip my brother.
@@PhoRunner Will this tire fit in the wheel well under the vehicle? your rig looks awesome
It will not. Largest size is 32” tire
👍🏻
👍🏻
$290 for OEM starter...good job
Mine's still working great!!!! $290 isn't too bad but $30 is better :)
solenoid rebuild ,not starter rebuild!
Nobody searching for solenoid rebuild lol
@@PhoRunner click bait!!!!
Lolll
I was gonna say, I was waiting for the brushes part numbers. Oh well, clean job and he was half way done with the rebuild but he put it back on the truck.
Now he turns the key and still, all he gets, is a click, click. lol.
Oh man, it started up. lol. Awesome job!!!
👍🏻
Thx
