I originally thought the Erica Synths DB-01 Bassline would fall in line with other similar tb-303 clones. But i was way wrong. It reminds me more of an Roland SH-101!! With 303 tendencies. It doesn't just stop there either with features. Some of my favorites are the Analog BBD Delay turned into a detune knob, As well as the Polivoks Analog Filter. So much more to it than that. for more info check out these links

Nice one thank you :)
Why do they need my credit card details to get a free sample pack?
GLDN1 Weird, it asked for your credit card information? I downloaded it myself on a random account and it just asked for my email and address. If it does charge you for anything I’ll refund you whatever it may be. But it is completely free I promise. Shouldn’t ask you for your CC Info though
@@RickyTinez I got the same remark for the Skillshare website: they too ask CC info for something "free". BTW your videos are top, thanks!
Ricky taking his headphones off to talk to camera is the positive energy im trying to channel in 2020
Grumbledore Music Wow
Me too, bit I’m tryna do it more with my pants when someone interesting walks through the door.
It's a good time to be a synth nerd; we're all trapped in our caves with our equipment. Your videos are always enjoyable, and you have an engaging way of talking about what is clearly your passion. Stay safe!
the bassline from Where's Your Head At is is a track called ME by Gary Numan. Not sure if it was sampled directly or just referenced because I haven't listened side by side. But cheggit out.
Oh that’s dope! Thanks for that info Robert
@@RickyTinez no, thanks for all the vids :) 🙏
I came here to post this....I think they sampled it straight up. Here's the original: ua-cam.com/video/JeucohIa5LQ/v-deo.html #synthhistory
A lot of people aren't aware that about half of all the synth parts in classic acid tracks are actually Sh-101 lines, not 303 lines. The 101 is almost as important to the history of acid as the 303. So it makes sense that this has a bit of a 101 vibe to it.
101 202 rock bottom end . 303 rock hi res game have all real sequencer fun
People also forget about ms 20s witch where heavy used
What are some good tracks with sh101?
Here's one - Robert Hood - 'SH-101'
I'd like to know some more too..

@@blk1048 tons of 808 state tracks
Literally nothing gives me GAS like Ricky Tinez' demos.
Three black corp machines on the shelf there like come on
I think this plus my drumbrute impact are gonna be a killer combo
Drumbrute impact is fuuuuun
I thought it was a new Volca until i looked closer lol
yeah, thought the same, a volca with parameter locks!
It’s very jersey shore club trance braaahh
@@smuller1 The Volca Drum has p-locks!
@@xnflg3074 ah OK, I don't own it. From the FM I know it is recording the changes of knobs and sliders. But never as comfortable as it looks on the Erica!
s müller It can do stepped locks too. If you hold down a step button on the ribbon sequencer and turn a knob, it’ll lock that in memory and apply it during playback of the sequence. The Drum is easily the most complex of the Volca line.
If The Juilliard School of Arts had a synthesis program, I would want Mr. Ricky Tinez to be my professor !
Any possibly of publishing a book Professor Tinez ?
3:39 "Is that wheres your head at"
LOL i thought a true synth aficionado would reference the original by Gary Numan...
Thank you thank you thank you for showcasing some of the BASS sounds on the Bassline. I've looked at half a dozen videos, even those by Erica Synths, and nobody can resist the modulation/ resonance crazy sauce. You are the one who has sold me on this box because now I know for sure the bass is for real. :)
I wanna hear that finished track from 7.28 🙂
I didn't understand half of this but your way of talking, sympathetic appearance and engagement or enthusiasm makes this a joy to watch. Take care, stay safe.
what a ray of sunshine :) thanks for the kind words Jonas!
"When would I use this feature?"....oh...Oh!
I've been eyeing this up for months. Nice review. Maybe if I move my bass station 2 and td3 on, I could make room for this. Or maybe not, I'm sure I can make room 👀
NOW I WANT ONE. Erica Synths owns my wallet at this point..
You made me buy a Zen Delay and no this. No regrets! What do you mean "no presets"? Doesn't it save the "sound" paramaters in banks/patterns?
The "ARP Thing" you´ve struggled with, works! Start Sequencer, then the Arp Mode (Shift&ARP), put the Notes in, while holding the buttons press Select/Gate. Release the Step Buttons, hit Record.
The sound speaks for itself. Had no idea and was going to blow this off, but man it sounds real nice.
3:33 Ricky plays “Where’s Your Head At?”
7:38 100% make that track now that the video is done lmao thats so slick
24:37 is the sexiest thing ever. I was like "Mkay he's gettin a little wild. Must be about to cut it." Then the beat came in and I realized... Ricky had a plan the whole time.
The bassline in "Where's Your Head At" is actually taken from a fantastic Gary Numan song: M.E.
From 1979 :)
Ohh I didn't know that haha, cool
Noooooo my wallet, not again !!!!!
G.A.S.!!!!😵
The knobs on this unit are soooo nice and chunky! They look extremly satisfying to use. Also noticed you didn't use the Drive knob until briefly near the end. Would have loved to hear more of it.
Thanks for the video Ricky, good stuff! I recently got the Erica Synths Baseline eurorack module and pairing it with the Arturia Minibrute 2S sequencer is heaven. Seems to fix some of your gripes, such as live recording your gate length. Also gives you pressure sensitive pads to route as modulation. Something to consider if people already own some of that gear or are looking to dive into modular but like this thing's sound.
7:23. ‘Says the guy who’s not going to use this feature ever’. Just brilliant Ricky, your face says it all, what a great piece of gear! 🤣 Order placed.
Hi Ricky. I always enjoy your videos. As a live performer, I find the vision of a live performer and details that can be so important when performing live. Thanks a lot.
Awesome review and video as always! After seeing this video months ago, I just got my DB-01 over the holidays. Seeing that it could do a large variety of things and I thought it would be a nice complement to my TB-03, rather than a replacement. The DB-01 sounds fantastic! From massive to growly to silky smooth, it is the perfect companion to the TB-03 - letting the TB-03 do the 303 things it does best and the DB-01 do all the rest :)
7:40 is the face of when the acid starts hitting! Oh Yeah! nice one! just got mine in today and its glorious!
Nice close out jam. Really shows off the synth.
looks like I can use it as a 303, a minitaur, and even a dfam
Nice -- buying on the strength of this vid.
Plz get a herbs and stones liquid foam and make a video about it, I'd like to know your thoughts on it.
Yes Please! In the meantime, Hainbach has already done one if you need a fix while you wait :)
Cool thing! What I'm really interested in, is how it compares to the Moog Minitaur for bass.
Love the sound of the Minitaur for bass, but can't really get it working with CV from a sequencer.
You already got this working..? Which sequencer you use...? I'm interested thx
I bought one of these last year following Ricky's review. It's totally sick, and Erica are a great company. I suggested a firmware update to increase the LFO cycle from 1 bar to 4, and they did it a month later. Ricky is right, this is SH-101 territory, and it's massive. What makes it special from my other mono synths is that the Envelope is soooo fast, and there is no click whatsoever. This is a future classic!
omg thank you so much. i’m always using way long lfos
You're the best synth reviewer out there, Ricky. I will always check out of there is a review by you if I plan to get a synth or similar instrument.
This synth is definitely one that caught my curiosity a little extra and I think you are spot on that it sounds like a mix of 101 and 303, with some unique features. Love that Erica sticks to adding the Polivoks filter, and that double bbd is pretty genius.
Hey Ricky, what do you think about the new tracker from polyend? I think it looks dope. And for what it does, it isn't that expensive. Don't about the workflow, but would love to try it out. Do you have any experience with this kind of of sequencers?
i'm also curious ricky!
I don't think Ricky's a tracker person
I don’t miss trackers. Used them heavily in late 90s before I could afford DJ gear. Maybe they’ve modernized it but it could be just another tracker. I’m curious too.
Please be the same depth as the zen delay ... please be the same depth as the zen delay ...
oooo it has a shot. The model cycles is 18cm and the zen delay is 15cm. Maybe it's close. Idk how the hell people are organizing all their gear. I had to build a crazy lego stand system that I haven't posted about yet.
First vid I watched here, super nice. The calm but focused delivery (plus the color grading) kinda remind me of a Philip Bloom review. Looking forward to more!

I am new to electronic music gear. Your videos are so honest and so helpful. Your comment section is also a great resource itself. I’m glad you exist.
I’d love to see a dedicated vid to your matrix 6
Lol barf, this thing intrigued me, love how big the knobs are to actually perform the thing which is lacking in a lot of products, plus it sounds huge through monitors
Ah man that thing sounds schweet! Did you talk about build quality and I missed that part? Do the knobs feels as good as they look? And is the body as metal and solid as it looks? Seems to be the same size as a Volca but MUCH better. I want one!
Good review that does'nt miss a thing, I like how you really go deep with your gear, your my favorite UA-cam channel as I am a tragic gearhead!
The future is crazy! Even the commercials have commercials! Fncking tv execs never dreamed that up!
You so need the LXR-02 with this; it's a match made in heaven: ua-cam.com/video/8nLfIv7kWCo/v-deo.html
If UA-cam told me how many times I've watched this video, I think I would be appalled.
You made this thing sound dope! Watched the Erica vid. But there it sounds so distorted. Thnx man! Awesome as allways
Ricky, I have a question that not too many people other than yourself can answer.. and I don't know when you'll get around to reading this, so no rush if it takes a while.. but:
As an owner of both the Pro 3 (which I also own) and from the perspective of someone interested in buying the DB-01 potentially.. can the DB-01 do anything the Pro 3 cant? I'm asking you because I know you know the Pro 3 inside and out.. and very few people likely can say that about themselves AND have tried the Erica Synths DB-01.
Looking at the devices and features, I'm surprised it's all analog, are you sure?
It's not mentionned on their website either.
I love how the parameter locks are relative to the underlying values.
Reminds me of how Maschine does automation. It’s great for performance as you can move controls around and still have your automation stay relative.
I just wish this had presets and usb...that would be perfect for me then. Also agree about automating the unison.
yeah that's a great one, wonder if elektron might add that as a trig lock option via software
Actually, if you have one of the big ‘uns like the Rytm, that’s how the performance controls work. Just not the trig locks. I’m also like 99% sure it’s how aftertouch and breath are modulated as well. On my faderfox I have knobs mapped to perf on my Rytm (don’t like the pad press idea) as well as a knob mapped to aftertouch as a mod source.
@@thedrumunkey8582 hmm you're right
Surprised the algorithm hasnt tagged this video for the "Where's Your Head At?" moment early on in the video. Lot of crazy copyright nonsense going on with You Tube at the moment.Another great video Ricky!
Help: I am looking for a inexpensive groovebox, something that gives me beats and a bassline or something like that. Is there anything out there under $250 bucks? Thanks.
7:23 for some reason this bassline reminds me of TRON: Legacy. But damn, never heard of the DB-01 before but it sounds fat as hell. Love it.
Playback sucks! Different note length than recorded ? It has no sense at all. No thanks I could not bear it. That simple bug , but disqualify all synth. If You can't play what you intended, the synth is a big no-no for me.
No presets is never a Pros in the nowdays hardware production . A part the lack of a second oscillator, the most I miss here are different waves and so I mean sound palette. funny or not this thing is gonna sound always the same. It is a beautiful object thou :D
The VCF is not outstanding, that was always my problem with the Erica Bassline.
Wow, been waiting for this release and your test of it, DB-01 is dope, Erica Synth is dope !!! Thanks Ricky
Yeah - I played with this at a music shop around month ago - ooh so dope. Yeah other patrons listened in and were ready to buy. Pricey but maybe not. But I think it is great.
WHEEEEEEERES YOURERR HEADDDD ATT (wheresyourheadat!)
16:29 is funky af
Ricky,,why you doing this to meee....I JUST GOT THE ERICA SYNTHS PICO SYSTEM iii....Now i GOTTA have this....i'm about to turn into an eletronic Junkee...lol...lol.....Thanks for sharing this...
Sound wise and build wise this looks great! Love Erica Synths stuff!
That bass line at around 7:30 was 🔥
I think this is the exact bass synth i was looking for.
Big thanks man. First you introduced me to the Novation Circuit, then you've kept finding new, really cool instruments that fascinate me.
I've been waiting for your vid on this synth since i saw you have it 😬 I REALLY dig it. Thanks for your take on it
Dope as always! Would love a deckards dream sample pack if you plan on doing more packs
Super clicky knobs.
I've had my eye on this for a while. Looks really fun, I'd get it before an Avalon, or pretty much any other "bassline", but I won't because I already have plenty of things that can do bass.
Who am I kidding. I'm totally gonna get this. Gah!
4:53 offset?
Ok, but where do you get your t-shirts?
7:20 Absolute fire, reminds me of old Richie, Sheet One.
May not be your thing, being a dawless kind of guy, but have you had a look at VCVrack.com
Erica knocking it out of the park once again. Great review Ricky!
Wheres your head at was a Tubeway Army/Gary Numan sample
Very good video .... thank you so much dude !!!!!!
No USB input post-2020 is crazy.
So the detune is just an analog chorus then right? Or am I missing something
Omg I want everything from this company, but it’s so dang expensive...
Dude! Your are so fun to watch its always a pleasure!
I wish I could afford every Erica lol
Hey Ricky, great Video..Giving you shout out from Rhampton...Keep up the great work..I may have to pick up one of these..
hey , listen to Me - Gary Numan!!!
I really hope Erica Synth will make a Sick DrumMachine .
They did...
Have Erica synths let you try the lxr-02 yet
how do I change the volume on this machine?
very cool review and thanks for the samples !
New synth enthusiast here. I loved your review and am about to get myself one of these. Just one question, tho. What is the gray thing that you have next to the synth and what does it do exactly?
Elektron Model Cycles.
This can't come out soon enough.
Torn between this and an avalon now. hmm...
Where can you even get an Avalon these days?
ordered one bc of this
Did they let you keep it?
Interesting that you think of it in terms of an SH-101 rather than just a TB-303. Of course, the MC-202 is - barring a few differences - a 101 with a sequencer and has sometime been disparagingly and unfairly called a poor man's (or woman's) 303 because of its ability to get close to the squelchiness of the 303 at half the 2nd hand price. The 101/202 is much more versatile than that and less of a 'one trick pony,' so that's great news for the DB-01if as you say it's more 101 than 303. Great 303 like form factor and I love the buttons, just like the Zen Echo. Erica don't have the resources of the 'B' word and so you need to consider that when you look at the price I guess. Goes without saying but hey, great vlog as usual Ricky.
just purchased my DB-01 today Ricky, watched the other vids, but this one sold it, brilliant channel, thank you. (i’m going to pair it with the Specular Tempus, check it out!) cheers from England.
"Tight beat, dude!"
Great video as usual! Thank you Ricky, I have my DB-01 coming soon :-)
I REALLY love Erica Synths' stuff! Everything they do is unique in some cool ways, even really basic stuff. I wish I had more money to give them for synths😄
Edit: I love the "camera 2" for sponsors 😋
thanks fro the great video. awesome enthusiasm and a top demo of this synth. I've skipped the sample pack download and just bought the one in stock from my local disti. looking forward to having this in the mix!
