  • Hey everyone! Welcome back to another spring salmon video! In this video I head out with my buddy Tristan and a couple of his grad school colleagues to go smash a bunch of May coho on Lake Michigan, as well as trying to put the first king or two in the boat for the 2024 season. I apologize for how scatterbrained and weird the video is due to basically all of my cameras malfunctioning - pretty typical when you're having a smash fest.
If you have any questions or want some more in-depth videos when it comes to the rigs, setup, or strategies for chasing these fish, let me know in the comments below! As always, my videos will always be FREE - if you think I earned it, I'd appreciate you hitting that subscribe button - all it does it let you know when I put out a new video. Thank you guys so much for watching!

Lots of lines to manage. What do you use for downrigger release and how long are your leaders off of the salmon candy flashers?

Great video! See a lot of the reels are not line counters. How are you keeping track of distance/depth?

That's a great question! The reels that don't have line counters are basically each pre set to run at a pre determined depth. In this video I had 2 color, 3 color, 5 color, and 7 color leadcore setups. Each one is set up to run at a specific depth, and doesn't vary. For example, on a 3 color, I have 30 yards of leadcore line with several hundred yards of 50lb braid backing. I let all 30 yards of leadcore out, then clip the planer board on the backing, right in front of the section of leadcore. Since the depth those lines run at doesn't change and isn't really adjustable, there's no need for a line counter. Sounds like a good topic for a video!

On my boat I use Penn 309 reels for my leadcore lines. Usually 50 ft leader( 20 lb) 4 color, then 30 lb mono. Let out all colors and 10 ft of mono, clip my board, swim it out.

I see your trolling 2.1/2.2 mph at the ball, what is the preferred range for King Salmon? Thanks in advance and great content!

I usually run my gear from about 2.2 to 2.5 at the ball, however there are days when the kings seem to want it going faster, closer to 2.7. If you ask enough people you'll hear anything from 2.1 to 3.2 haha, it all depends on the day. I like to occasionally work turns into my trolling passes to speed up and slow down my lines, and sometimes it will trigger eats on either the faster or slower side of the boat - which then gives me a direction to go with speed. That said, my general "go - to" speed is 2.2 to 2.5

I wanna learn more how-to troll. I already understand the gear.

@@sinfulbeliever7083 what exactly would you like to know more about? Boat control, picking where to start, which direction to go, anything more specific?

@@MadisonAnglingI’d like to learn more about reading the water/wind to know what depth to start, which direction to troll that day, and finding fish/thermocline on your graph without a fish hawk
