Every time I doubt about collecting music CDs, I'll go and watch this video to remind myself that I should continue. Thank you Myke, for addressing this.
So perfectly put into words Mike. I think all of us as collectors go through that "why do I need this on 3 formats" or the dreaded "should I slow down in my spending because I don't have the time to enjoy this stuff?" You hit it on the head by saying that it's OK for something to be about the individual. Collecting doesn't need a rational answer or explanation. I hope that I can instill enough of a musical appreciation in my son that when I'm dead and gone, he will look forward to inheriting such a vast metal collection. Or at least know enough about it to realize that throwing it away or taking it to goodwill would be foolish. Hell.... There's a retirement lurking somewhere in those rare black metal rekkids! ;)
I love this video, my family always asks me why do I collect so much pointless stuff (shoes, vinyl, rocks, and knives) But at the end of the day collecting brings me a different kind of joy.
I was beginning to feel guilty about spending so much on my Blu-Ray collection (creeping up on to the 500 mark), but this vid gave me a point of view that addressed that guilt. Thanks.
Thanks for this. I actually struggled with this 'problem' when I was researching DJ Shadow and learned he had sixty-thousand records. It was a perplexing moment where I thought "Wait, there's no way he's going to listen to all of them. What will that make of me if I keep building my collection?"
YESYESYES I cannot stress enough how happy collecting cd's makes me happy. My family always asks me why i collect music when i can download them online. It always feels amazing when i can hold my favorite album on my hand and be able to admire its album cover, booklet, and cd. Thank you for this video Myke.
2:11 "I have... not a lot of records but I have a decent amount of records" You're being modest dude! I've been collecting since late 2011 and I just recently passed 80 records. Your collection is one of the most impressive I've ever seen.
Beautiful, Myke! Bravo! I don't collect vinyl but I respect others who do. Collecting vinyl takes a lot of patience and financial independence. I'm not much of a collector anymore. I used to collect CD's, video games and comic books but now I just save my money for traveling. Awesome video!
Beautifully said. I agree with everything you said. Music is such a huge part of my life, that at many times it is one of the things that keeps me going through life and to keep on moving forward or even to just relax from a bad day. Your right. Enough is never enough when it comes to something you love or your passion. For me, I can never tire of finding new albums, artists, and records. Well thats enough of my rambling lol. Once again great video Myke!!!
You nailed my thought with one word: options. That, for me, is the key. If something is not in my collection, I don't have the OPTION to play it in the format I love. Enough said. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Very well said!
Fantastically put Myke. I've surrounded myself with music (punk, metal, garage rock n roll) & movies (horror, b-grade trash). Coming home after a hard day work or life in general knowing when I walk through my door I'm able to put something on the turntable or put a movie on & let my worries leave me, to me that satisfies. Searching for records is therapeutic & makes me feel good. Spot on dude. Cheers!
Perfectly explained Myke, you're the man! I think when you compare collecting records to a lot of the other forms of collecting you mentioned, it comes out as a fairly rational since most of us listen to every record in our collection at least a few times. The collection serves a very practical purpose
You Know, Owning Your Record Showcase Is Like Having Your Own Personal Radio Station......it Represents You And Your Taste In Music. I Play My CDs When I Have Company But, Play My Vinyl When It's Just Me At Chill Time. And I Like It Like That.
I just found ur vids, love them! my friends all rate Spotify but I still buy and collect cds, I have maybe 3000 or so and a third of them are punk rock, now I don't feel alone. keep making vids I wanna hear ur opinion dude!
Great response, no need to question your own passion, it is what it is. If you only listen to an album once, but don't want to get rid of it, and it makes you happy to have, it's not hurting anyone, be happyl
You've put the feelings into words. I have only a small personal collection, but a few of those I found after wanting them for a long time. It's a great feeling of finally grabbing that record from the bin. I've only played them a handful of times, but I have them.. Great video man.
Very similar to collecting comics. There's an archeology to it. To find those ridiculously rare issues. Those rare out print indie label albums. The hunt, the memories, the conversations, the time periods. There's sentimental value that you can only understand once you decide to start to collect your passion.
It's better to have passions about "things" rather than people because, first, you don't ever want to become a stalker, and second, people can leave you anytime (wrether they dump you, or, well, die). Objects are not necessarily eternal, but at least you can pursue a passion about objects from any point where you experienced a loss (say, you collect candies and they got all rotten, you can go on buying other candies). It's much better to have something in life that fills us with passion than feeling empty from not being enthusiast about anything.
Myke, Cheers to you. The Mrs and I are on the road where we went to Dallas for the wedding of a great friend we met through the Vinyl Community four or five years ago. We don't do many videos any more and I guess it's lack of substance but really it's lack of charisma. My wife just said I like that guy speaking of you. Yea we are subs now man and look forward to hitting you up on this great hobby. Go on with your bad ass whether it's Merle Haggard or what have not. ;) Keep Groovin. Memphis Vinyl Jim & The Mrs.
Wow Myke. What a brilliant response to as to why we collect vinyl, now I have something to say when my parents rant to me about buying too many records aha
Damn Myke, I really needed this video. I can fall back on this video in so many times of future despair now, sorry if that sounds weird or what the fuck ever. But yeah, this shit is crazy amazing and I want to thank you for putting it out there. I for sure agree. Also, Beezy is really lacing your videos with some crazy murderous beats. The instrumental on this video was crazy, shout out to Beezy.
Now THIS was a great video. You hit the nail on the head in absolutely every point you made in this video. Goddamn. And that Bukowski quote was just perfect for this
So good I'm in the middle of re-watching it again back to back lol I really can't believe how perfectly you described everything. This is now the definitive video on this topic as far as I'm concerned
I collect movies - well, mostly blu rays these days. And people always ask why I buy stuff that's only kinda like but I don't know why. I just love movies. Being able to talk about it - the actors, the director, the writers.
Hey myke, what was the first record you ever got? How did you get into collecting music? first concert experience? how did your parents influence your current music taste? worst concert experience? some questions to consider for future videos
Have you ever watched the Alan Zweig documentary on record collecting? He goes around Toronto talking to all different types of collectors and tries to work out his own feelings of obsession, it's really interesting
Ugh I think I needed this😂 I don't have a huge collection but I just bought a $70 record (the most I ever spent on one record) and I was almost regretting it but no it was a great buy imo😊
dam man thanks for this vid. I collect a lot of things. Everything I collect brings me back to a place in my life. You expressed that perfectly and answered some questions ive asked my self repeatedly about the things other ppl say I hoard.
I agree. On the other hand I buy to listen to it apart from the journey to find it. I don't care for albums I would only listen to once. I look for certain albums I know I will like/ find interesting or I at least know the artist is good (pre-ordering newer stuff for example). Exception are limited editions and box sets, some of my (residents) stuff I bought because I love the package and/or artwork and I am a completist. But that's just part of the experience you can't download. Also I tend to listen to the stuff out of my collection more on spotify than the actual copy, but that's just a matter of convenience.
I fuckin' love this video. I sometimes think about my collection and why I buy more than I can listen to. I even dragged my vinyl halfway around the world when i emigrated. I'm glad there are other people pondering these things. 10/10 for the video and the sentiment. I've only just started watching your vid's so I may have missed something but are you into much electronic dance stuff? Techno, jungle, hardcore etc?
Well said, I think the view "oh I'll listen to it just once or twice" so why bother collecting is BS. The quote you gave by Charles is perfect. You're right about the journey, I never thought I'd own Bodycount's first CD with Copkiller on it but then a seller on Ebay had it. :)
Devil's advocate here but I think that everyone can achieve a healthier middle ground in terms of spending money. For example, you could cut your collection by something like 50% (CD's and vinyl) by only start buying stuff that you *really* like, instead of buying an album when it comes out and you don't even know if you'll enjoy listening to it more than 2 times. You now take that money, which I think is $XXXX judging by the size of your collection and you can save it for the future, you can invest it if that's your thing, you can travel if that's your thing, you can spend money on other types of art like books if that's your thing OR, if you want music music music, use that money to go to that festival that's in europe or across the country that you'd like to go. Of course, it's probably hard for you to imagine having half your collection at this point but that's because you created an emotional connection with the SIZE of it, it would be like your penis shrinked half an inch, you'd probably be sad and very insecure but if you were born with a penis that is half inch long you wouldn't miss it in the same way... OK, I'm talking about penises now, here's my point: It's OK to spend that much money on "irrational" things BUT you could drastically reduce the money that you spend on REALLY irrational things that bring you next to no fulfillment (like collection albums that you don't give a fuck about) and spend it on something that DOES make you fulfilled, there are no disadvantages to it as far as I can see.
Great video man, I also checked out Beezy 430's soundcloud. Great tunes and vibes. Keep up the good work dude! EDIT: I thought Myke C-Town and Beezy 430 were the same person (my bad!!).
I feel like older ppl tend to collect a little more cause we couldn't just steal the music online... I remember being 16 and spending half my tiny check at tower records.. u actually had to support the ppl you liked back then
What do you think of ordering records online?? Is it cheating? I personally like going to the record store and digging. I'm not talking about ordering new releases (like a preorder of a new album), but more like albums that are already out. #WDYWK

This video means a lot to me.

Being With You. Yep. Bought a Johnny Rivers LP this weekend because it was a part of childhood experience. Relatable.

Well done. Time to go searching for more vinyl!
Great video man, you definitely hit the nail on the head with your answer.
Myke, you really hit the nail on this one, i feel the same about buying my collection
You described my feelings on record collecting perfectly
Wow Myke. What a brilliant response to as to why we collect vinyl, now I have something to say when my parents rant to me about buying too many records aha
Fantastic reasons all of them, i think 'the hunt is better than the kill' expression is also something we can all relate to as well.
Loved this, one day I'll have a collection like his!

Thanks for that Mike 🖖👽🤘
Also music is like a drug it's highly addictive
I started collecting stamps at a very young age. I even had a small collection of post cards. But 12" vinyl blew that shit away.
I collect movies - well, mostly blu rays these days. And people always ask why I buy stuff that's only kinda like but I don't know why. I just love movies. Being able to talk about it - the actors, the director, the writers.

Human beings need struggle in order to survive and collecting anything gives you that struggle.
Loved this video mike ✊🏼 keep up the great work

I wonder how much money has been spent for all those records.

Good Stuff. Perfectly sums it up.
You nailed it!
Question: Have you had any luck finding decent records at stores like salvation army or good will? Or even garage sales?
Myke C Town always kicking straight game. Dope ass video
Amen.

+Myke C-Town I fail. I thought Beezy 430 was you as well. Either way good tunes and your videos are awesome I've been watching a bunch of them.
I am 51 years old and I still buy CDs I will probably buy music until the day I die
Awesome Morrissey shirt!
It's the fucking hunt man, the Vinyl hunt
Great video 😊
Yo Myke, love your response. Do you know what happened to Robert Z? I tried watching the original video again, but I can't find his account anymore
I feel like older ppl tend to collect a little more cause we couldn't just steal the music online... I remember being 16 and spending half my tiny check at tower records.. u actually had to support the ppl you liked back then
How do I start collecting. Australia isn't really known for record stores so what do I do?
Good point man however I often see people purchasing stuff that they really don't need to based on a momentary itch. One must stay sober.
+Myke C Town what turntable would you recommend for ripping vinyl ? The turntable I have makes it simple, but the quality isn't very good.
You ever coming to L.A.?
