Hi great video. At the age of 49 is learning to be a commercial helicopter pilot a bit too late in life plus how much does this cost to achieve ballpark figure?
darren bridge blimey, that’s a tough question Darren. Given that you can’t fly commercially beyond 65 I think you might struggle to make back your investment but I’m certainly no expert. As for ball park figure, I think in the end you’ll need about 100k to get a CPL, type rating and instrument rating but it could well be more than that. Do you have a PPL?
darren bridge well don’t let me alone be the one to make your mind up. I think if I was you I would go for a ppl which is the first step anyway - plus it’s bloody good fun.
RustyNuts I wish I had! No, I’ve been very lucky to be able to borrow money to do this. I will have to pay it back though so there’s a bit of pressure there!
@@RoryOnAir Fair play m8. I'm just reading Flying Training part of the PPL syllabus ans planing on doing my NPPL after the world beats The KungFlu. So what's harder then in your opinion?
RustyNuts definitely the helicopter. It doesn’t want to remain where you left it so you have to be hands and feet on the whole time. It’s a great fun challenge but it’s definitely more difficult that a comparable sized aeroplane.
Rory On Air IMHO, helos are always trying to screw themselves into the ground (even with a tail rotor - not sure about NTR versions). I've had a couple of goes in them over the years, had a go on some kit at Wallop (with a mate) too and use various flight sims. Even that takes hours - very light inputs required, dancing with the pedals. But what machines! Awesome and yet pricey. Fixed Wing microlights? They take a certain touch too. I think some instructors think it fun when a GA PPL pilot comes along after flying spam cans and thinks that they can jump straight into a 450kg FWML and it'll be easy to fly. It doesn't work like that unless the PPLP has flown Cubs or Aeroncas or similar
Someone said it's better to learn how to fly in windy conditions, would you agree? If you let go of the controls, will the helicopter just slowly descend safely Strange Q: Someone said hovering a helicopter is like riding a unicycle while juggling (it requires immense coordination) is there an exercise to practice the coordination required to hover a helicopter? maybe not like riding a unicycle while juggling but something else
Hi, I think learning in windy conditions is useful but not essential for all the training. No, that is not how it works. In helicopters without stability assistance you will crash if you let go. I think it is a bit like that and it does need a lot of coordination but practice makes perfect.
@@RoryOnAir I have many friends who fly the 189 in the offshore sector and they say the FMS is an in-house bodge job, the autopilot is very poor but AW are working on a software up-grade. The pilot presentation of systems is great though
@@RoryOnAir Hi Roy, I fly the S92, I've been on the fleet for 3.5 years and love it, finally a big twin with an APU ! I flew the Super Puma (Loved that machine) for many years and the EC225 (didn't like it). The 92 is good, the display to the crew is easy to read, great FMS and plenty of power, even in the heat. The only negative I have is no cockpit door, you have to climb in though the main cabin

darren bridge well don’t let me alone be the one to make your mind up. I think if I was you I would go for a ppl which is the first step anyway - plus it’s bloody good fun.
Rory On Air And if I understand right that’s the best part of 12k for a PPL (H)?
darren bridge it wouldn’t depend on the length of time it takes you and the schools prices but yeah, something like that I would think.
How come you’ve ended up with a better quality BA high vis than me? and I work for BA!! Haha
Ha ha ha - sorry! I was given that in about 2005/6 when I did 3 weeks work experience at Kirkwall Airport. 👌
Learning to fly heli is way more expensive than NPPL. And you're doing both, Did you find a pot of Gold? Wanna share? Lol
Muso Seven yeah I think the fact it’s so tricky to master is a bit part of the appeal. I love it. 😍
Is that you Colin Furze? :-D
ahcmit I’m flattered! His videos are amazing.
@@RoryOnAir No thank you! Very good presenter. I am new to your channel and enjoying the content, keep up the good work!
ahcmit that’s very kind of you. I’m delighted you’re enjoying my videos. Stay safe!
Rory if you have ever flown the VskyLabs Cabri sim on XPlane 11 can you comment on how accurate it is ?
I haven’t I’m afraid - I think if I got sim gear at home I’d never get any work done!
@@RoryOnAir Cheers for the reply 🙂
Someone said it's better to learn how to fly in windy conditions, would you agree?
If you let go of the controls, will the helicopter just slowly descend safely
Strange Q: Someone said hovering a helicopter is like riding a unicycle while juggling (it requires immense coordination) is there an exercise to practice the coordination required to hover a helicopter? maybe not like riding a unicycle while juggling but something else
Hi, I think learning in windy conditions is useful but not essential for all the training.
No, that is not how it works. In helicopters without stability assistance you will crash if you let go.
I think it is a bit like that and it does need a lot of coordination but practice makes perfect.
@@RoryOnAir appreciate it thanks mate.
Why did u take ur jumper off? Is there a video ?
I was too hot…
@@RoryOnAir video? On when
How old are you Rory?
32 I think... ;)
How much did the course cost?
It was £60k when I did it but check out Helicentre Aviation's website or facebook page for current prices.
I think Harry and Sam will be disappointed with the 189 !
Really? What makes you say that?
@@RoryOnAir I have many friends who fly the 189 in the offshore sector and they say the FMS is an in-house bodge job, the autopilot is very poor but AW are working on a software up-grade. The pilot presentation of systems is great though
Ed M interesting insight - thank you. Do any of your friends fly the S92? What do they say about that?
@@RoryOnAir Hi Roy, I fly the S92, I've been on the fleet for 3.5 years and love it, finally a big twin with an APU ! I flew the Super Puma (Loved that machine) for many years and the EC225 (didn't like it). The 92 is good, the display to the crew is easy to read, great FMS and plenty of power, even in the heat. The only negative I have is no cockpit door, you have to climb in though the main cabin
"Choz eye bell it "
Aye! 👌🤣
What happens at helicopter pilot flight school, stays at helicopter pilot flight school
The MicroPilot ha ha ha - I should have said that in the video. 😂
Part of my brain sometimes thinks about becoming a pilot, while the other part of my brain knows that doing so would result in me going into overload
And i sometimes wonder if i am not much more useful than a chocolate teapot
There’s a lot to take in!
Ok.
why are you all wearing epaulettes.
Because they're training to become commercial helicopter pilots.
It’s part of our uniform. It says ‘Student Pilot’ on it. I think it’s pretty standard and commercial flight school.
@@RoryOnAir I'd be proud of them aswell, I would even wear the uniform to go shopping at tesco 👌👌
j reilly30 ha ha - it looks a bit like a security guard uniform at a distance so I’m not sure about that!
