did anyone else's grandma tell them not to swallow the seeds of a fruit, so like grapes, apples, watermelons etc., or a fruit tree (depending on which fruit you swallowed the seeds of) will grow in your stomach? 😂😅
Oh I see, no, it wasn't mentioned. In Russian culture, it means the opposite. Russians believe that when dishware breaks, it is for good luck. One time, I accidentally broke a wine glass, and I freaked out because I thought my mom would be upset, but she actually said, "it's okay, it happened for good luck."
I've heard from a friend that if a utensil falls down a guest will arrived depending on the utensil's side for example if a fork/spoon(idk about knife) fall and it's facing the front side an angel will appear meanwhile if it falls down on the opposite side a demon(or maybe) a black angel will come
This actually happened to me twice when I was young, my ears wern't cut off, but there was a small sort of cut on the back of one of my ears. You need to do it not on purpose for it to actually work. (True story, no lie)
Same here! I don't know why or how it's logical possible, but it's happened to me, my brother, my nephew. It's not only a bloody cut, it also hurts a lot.
In Malaysia my mum say if people cut our nails at night, ghost will collect our nails fragments to create another us, who it will later kill and replace us and our family will never notice. (Idk if I used the word 'fragments' correct or not :o )
Sherman Stanley if you put your fingernails at south or west I forgot .... The ghost will come at midnight and clip their fingers at the end of ur bed and replace their nails with your nail
A friend of mine is muslim and he told me not to whistle at night or demons called "schinns" will apear and might attack you. If you wistle in your home at night the demons will claim your home for them and throw you out.
+Wade Wilson - Yes, but he claimed there's some validity to it. There isn't. Millions and millions of people sleep with a fan on at night. And they aren't dying from it.
I agree. I'm 56 and have slept with a fan on in my closed room(s) for many years! I'm still alive! :) But why does this only persist in Asian Countries?
I don't know about anyone else but my mother always told me not to shower right after eating/dinner or else the heat will mess with your digestive system. (Not sure if that's what she really said, I was very young when she told me this)
my korean friends have all been terrified of leaving fans on at night. living in LA, i slept with the fans on every night. i never understood the fear lol.
I'm Arab and we have No.#2 "the nail" thing as well xD , No.#5 instead they say pregnant women shouldn't look at ugly things or ugly animals or the baby will be like them xD hhaah as if even if they weren't true ... they are still funny and enjoyable haha XD
My mom taught us to never make fun of anybody or hate anyone based on their physical features or we will have kids with those features. She always used my brothers as examples because they're lefties and she's racist against lefties. Lol
thenotorious ong hahah yesss here too, even if you say something just a mere joke on someone's physical features or even the walk .. you either get that or your kids xD !' hahaha the lefties one is funny though, don't they say ppl using left hand is like more smart or something ? XD even tho here its impolite to shake hands/give something/eat with the left hands xD but at least it has some good ... stuff :P
People in some European countries used to believe that about pregnant women too. One explanation for why the Elephant Man was deformed was that his mother was frightened by an elephant while she was pregnant.
Aymocha well ty I guess ? XD but thank god it's not an academic paper .. it's youtube :P so we need to relax and write things like ~ this ~ and that ~ and draw rainbows and run ~~~~~ fast!!~~~ hahaha :P

One creepy one is that you shouldn't go on or near water during the Tomb Sweeping Festival or spirits of dead people will pull you under the water. I think this is just regional, like in Jiangsu. A few years ago some students at my school went on a boat tour on Qing Ming (Tomb Sweeping Day), there was an accident, and three of them died. +123haninhk lol ok. They can do whatever they want it's their vid, don't be so sensitive, they said Southeast Asia. If this was a vid about only Indonesia and they didn't mention it then fine but it's not. So lol. Try doing UA-cam yourself and see how many ppl will pick on random things :P
we had a Korean live with us when I was 12. he was going to Ga Tech. He's like a brother to me. once lightning struck a tree close to the house. He runs around yelling, "Not me! Not me!". He wanted a part of the tree. He said if you carry it about in your belt, you won't be struck by lightning.
here's one i grew up with. "If a bird flies into your home, someone you're related to will die soon." "Don't do that, you'll go blind" (Wanking) "Don't open an umbrella indoors"
In India there's something like If you lick the utensils the food was made in (like a pan) after eating, it will rain or there would be a storm on your wedding day
I'm a bit upset you didn't specifically mention Indonesia for the 3 people in a pic tale, coz it is very big here as well :) anyhow great video as always!
Never heard about the leg shaking theory, but now that I have, I kinda believe it. Rings true in my case. Never could sleep with a fan in the room myself. Very much dislike the feeling on my skin. Maybe in a past life I was killed by one ;).
My mom used to tell me if I looked outside for to long, I'll see a strange creature outside that will kill me, and that if I played with shadows, they'll come to life and kill me
in middle school they said every time we tear a page from our books a leaf from a tree falls. also when you smell flowers, insects travel up your nasal path, crack your skull and chew your brain and eat your eyes out. yep that was my third grade teacher
We all grew up with... and I've used them on my kids lol 1. don't pick your nose or you'll pull the strings and go criss eyed 2. don't play with your bellybutton or you'll unscrew it and tour bottom will fall off. westerners aye! 😂👌
in turkish we have "koca karı masalları" which translates old wives tales also:) and cutting nails at night is one of them actually. we now most of that folkloric stuff comes from pre-islam, shamanism era and of course asia. it's nice to see cultural similarities like these having roots from hundreds of years back then
Before I moved, my room had a ceiling fan right over the lower half of my bed, and in the summer I turn it on high and sleep and I'm still here. Maybe it's because sometimes in the middle of the night, I wake up cold and cover myself with blankets.
When they started talking about ear size leading to wealth and prosperity, I immediately thought of ferengis from deep space nine 😂 "you don't have to lobes for it!"
whenever I was little I remember walking on a carpet with red polkadots and whenever I steped in one of them this is what my mom said: don't step it them its fire. probably to trick me or something so I kept avoiding them LOL
the shaking leg thing my mom told me the same thing but shes also an awesome mom. i went to the doctors, then the doctors said i have ADHD since i was 12 and then she was like, "oh, i didnt know, no wonder why you keep moving ur leg" i laughed so hard
My Japanese mom would sing a lullaby before sleep, ending with a sentence suggesting that if you don't sleep immediately, a man in the night will cut off your ears 😅
Here in the phil we also believed that if you peep at the opposite gender you get a sty or a "kulatoy" and that you should NEVER point at a tree directly or the spirit in the tree might think you are mocking it and overall curse you...
I saw Dan on the plane to Vegas from SFO! I was too shy to say hi coz you were with your gf 😣😂😂 I do the rice one too and my man's skin is flawlessss LOL
7:25 I remember being 13 practicing my piano lessons and I kept messing it up. I was getting soooo pissed/ frustrated (but I was trying to keep my cool) my ears were hot and the tips of them turned bright red to the point to where my teacher busted out laughing ( I have brown skin and it was still really noticeable)
My mum used to tell me that if you don't finish all the rice in your bowl, as in there is nothing but air in your bowl, your wive/husbands face will be covered in freckles.
About the idea that people with long earlobes are fortunate, I was taught that big earlobes means that you wear heavy earrings, which pull down and stretch your ears. Heavy earrings are usually made from gold and embedded with other jewels. To afford these earrings, you must be wealthy. Makes sense!
I know one Japanese wives tale where: If you leave your belly button exposed during a thunderstorm, lightning will steal it away. Idk what exactly would happen if lightning stole your belly button, but it's amusing none the less.
I talked about the fan death to a Korean friend of mine. She told me that Korean people believe that you will suffocate because it makes "oxygen move". ^^
An old wives tale my mum was told as a kid, and she believed her entire life, until she married my dad is that if you eat raw cookie dough, or any batter with eggs, that you'll get worms. I guess back in honeymoon land when my parents first got married, my mum was making cookies for my dad, and he kept eating the raw dough, and she kept slapping his hands, and telling him to stop. Well, he finally asked why, and she said to him, "you'll get worms if you eat raw cookie dough!", and he started laughing his bum off, and asked her where she heard that, and she told him that her mum told her that her entire life. During his uncontrollable laughter he told her that's not true, that the most that would happen is that he could have a very slim chance of getting a bacterial infection via salmonella. My mum told me, and my sister the same thing growing up, and my dad would laugh and tell her to stop telling us old wives tales. Then when her back was turned, he'd sneak us a piece of cookie dough.
One I was told when I was younger and was a great deterrent on this bad habit. "If you chew your nails, it will make you stupid" Which, you know... as a small asian child, the last thing you want is to be dumb. So I never chewed my nails again.
my mom said if the fork fell it means a male guest will come and if the spoon fell the female guest that will come. And if you bit your tongue ask someone to give you a number upto 26 then if they gave you a number for example 2, 2 stands for b in alphabet. then whoever u know that has a name starts with B it means theyre thinking or talking about you
After attending a funeral, go directly home (like don't make any additional stops or visits) because spirits from the cemetery may follow you. This can be abated by casting salt upon the funeral attendee. I actually saw my Mom do this to a family friend!
did anyone else's grandma tell them not to swallow the seeds of a fruit, so like grapes, apples, watermelons etc., or a fruit tree (depending on which fruit you swallowed the seeds of) will grow in your stomach? 😂😅
yep. saw a man online that it did happen to. seed went down the wrong pipe and was growing
Yes!!!! My grandma said that!!!!
lol Western grandma say that too
My mum used to say that!
Yep I heard that
Here is a funny Russian myth: if a utensil (fork, spoon, knife) falls on the floor, a guest will soon arrive at your house.
im not sure if the video mentioned this but if a plate or bowl suddenly slip from your hand and crack, it means a terrible accident will happen
Oh I see, no, it wasn't mentioned. In Russian culture, it means the opposite. Russians believe that when dishware breaks, it is for good luck.
One time, I accidentally broke a wine glass, and I freaked out because I thought my mom would be upset, but she actually said, "it's okay, it happened for good luck."

havent told you this but this myth is also around asia but like korea?
i mean the myth i just pointed out.. but the difference is so big because a terrible accident is like someone fatally wounded or something haha
Grew up with parents telling us to never point at the moon or it'll cut your ears off when you sleep. 😲
hmmm I should have no head then
This actually happened to me twice when I was young, my ears wern't cut off, but there was a small sort of cut on the back of one of my ears. You need to do it not on purpose for it to actually work. (True story, no lie)
yeah same....
Same here! I don't know why or how it's logical possible, but it's happened to me, my brother, my nephew. It's not only a bloody cut, it also hurts a lot.
I thought it was real cuz when I was young my skin was very dry and my ears kept bleeding
In Malaysia my mum say if people cut our nails at night, ghost will collect our nails fragments to create another us, who it will later kill and replace us and our family will never notice. (Idk if I used the word 'fragments' correct or not :o )
The word fragments is right, but you should've said "nail fragments" instead of "nails fragments."
My mum told me that people would hate me if I cut my nails at night 😂
yeah your right
Dude, this is creepy xD
Sherman Stanley if you put your fingernails at south or west I forgot .... The ghost will come at midnight and clip their fingers at the end of ur bed and replace their nails with your nail
my grandma used to tell me that if i don't finish my rice, my boyfriend would have many pimples on his face... HAHAHA
Same
SAME JAHAHAHA
Same
saaaame 😂😂😂😂
Same hi kpop fan I'm a kpop fan as well
I have tiny hands. Where's my money? :D
Never, ever, ever ask that question on the Internet. Just saying. I'm 99.9% you aren't going to like the replies.
This conversation sounds like two random parents teaching a lesson to a kid who asked a (definitely not) inappropriate question.
True :D
My mom always told me not to cut nails at night... 😁
Same
same
Because there will be an asian ghost.
same
Piña ASMR and more samee
Just found your channel. So far seems awesome! Pretty informative
Thanks so much!
Lol I just did too!
My grandma told me not to shake my legs because it would look like you're on drugs lol...so I guess you would end up broke.
koligina I know this was posted awhile ago...but this made me laugh so hard!
My Korean mom used to tell me not to whistle at night or you'll attract snakes.
my mom says: that if I whistle at night, a ghost will think im lonely and come visit me
+SunyGhost we weren't allowed to whistle because then you would attracted ghost...
my sister tell me that if you sing while you eat, your husband will cheat on you.
A friend of mine is muslim and he told me not to whistle at night or demons called "schinns" will apear and might attack you. If you wistle in your home at night the demons will claim your home for them and throw you out.
In lithuania my mom said not to whistle or your money will leave you.
The fan one is still a myth. The explanation is just an urban legend. It has been tested and disproven.
+
+PraiseDivineMercy all of them are myths. 🙄
Mike Pellerin Parents do not want to pay for a high amount of electricity.
I don't know about anyone else but my mother always told me not to shower right after eating/dinner or else the heat will mess with your digestive system. (Not sure if that's what she really said, I was very young when she told me this)
same here
That is actually true.
my korean friends have all been terrified of leaving fans on at night. living in LA, i slept with the fans on every night. i never understood the fear lol.
"Do not watch too much TV, or your eyes will become square shaped".
I have heard that one in Finland. When I was a kid I almost, at one point, believed it. But still continued watching ;-)
Also in Germany 😀
Glad to find the new channel. OTGW isn't any fun without you. Good to see you again.
I'm Arab and we have No.#2 "the nail" thing as well xD ,
No.#5 instead they say pregnant women shouldn't look at ugly things or ugly animals or the baby will be like them xD hhaah as if
even if they weren't true ... they are still funny and enjoyable haha XD
My mom taught us to never make fun of anybody or hate anyone based on their physical features or we will have kids with those features. She always used my brothers as examples because they're lefties and she's racist against lefties. Lol
thenotorious ong hahah yesss here too, even if you say something just a mere joke on someone's physical features or even the walk .. you either get that or your kids xD !'
hahaha the lefties one is funny though, don't they say ppl using left hand is like more smart or something ? XD
even tho here its impolite to shake hands/give something/eat with the left hands xD but at least it has some good ... stuff :P
People in some European countries used to believe that about pregnant women too. One explanation for why the Elephant Man was deformed was that his mother was frightened by an elephant while she was pregnant.
This is just a grammar thing or whatever. You don't need to say No. Before # because it means the same thing.
Aymocha well ty I guess ? XD but thank god it's not an academic paper .. it's youtube :P so we need to relax and write things like ~ this ~ and that ~ and draw rainbows and run ~~~~~ fast!!~~~ hahaha :P
Lol this explains why Donald Trump has small hands.
😂😂😂😂
The entire time they discussed the hand size thing, all I could think was, "Trump would certainly love that old wives tale!"
tommy94612 yes in trumps words my father gave me a small loan of 1 million dollars 🤑
tommy94612 my thoughts exactly! 7:33
Aha!
Fan death thing is completely false. Hypothermia doesn't work like that, and a fan doesn't cause it. I'm pretty surprised these guys believe in it. Thought they were smarter than that.
Just to add, fans don't chill the air, they only circulate it. There's no way you'll get hypothermia from a fan. Please educate yourselves. www.snopes.com/medical/freakish/fandeath.asp
+PearlOscarful we are talking about hyperthermia :)
+Double Chen lol
+Double Chen guys, hypo or hyperthermia caused by a fan is still false. Fans won't heat the air in the room to raise your internal body temperature. It just won't happen. The sweating thing you describe is totally false. Really, please Google this and you'll easily find that fan death is simply not true, in any form. I'm very surprised you guys believe it's true because you seem level headed, but it's just scientifically impossible to die from a fan causing hyperthermia or anything else. Seriously just please Google it.
+PearlOscarful And I'm guessing it can't be good to breathe in all the stale air that's trapped for an entire night? and about the previous part that I wrote, that could increase blood pressure and cause vasodilation and that's not good for your body too!
Expecting the fan death thing.
Haha. Better explanation than the last time I heard it when they said "it cuts up the oxygen in the air and suffocates you."
If you point 2 fans at each other, with a mirror behind each fan, it will cause a rip in the space-time continuum.
only tale my mom told me: 'DO IT COZ I SAID SOO' .-.
that only goes so far
I so wanna hang out with you guys! You seem to be so much fun!
I'm starting to notice that I'm subscribed to a lot of channels run by people from various Asian countries or having Asian countries as topic and I really don't know why that is actually.
Also, I've noticed that Asian-Americans or Asian-Europeans become very dear to me real quick. Every culture has awesome and bad things about it, but people with Asian heritage seem to go around that and have the best attributes from both worlds, but non of the bad. At least that's how I feel about it, I'm sure there are exceptions, but this turns out to be true more often than not, you guys are just so well rounded personalities imo.
haha thanks!
So much research done for this video! There are so many of these that I grew up with haha.
Y'all are awesome! I just found the channel and have blown through like 20 videos! Y'all definitely deserve more subscribers!
The fan explanation sounds off. We air cool by heat exchange over a radiating surface.

+Adora Du I actually think that Chinese medicine works because it works based on the homeostatic balance of your body... I mean, hey the Chinese have been around for thousands of years and we're still around, this must say something about the effectiveness of Chinese medicine, right? idk, just my thoughts!(:
It is, korean fan death is a myth
+Adora Du Thank you for staying civilized, it's hard to find sane people online nowadays(:
+Adora Du But this is a korean theory, not chinese theory.
OMG I HAVE NEVER BEEN EARLY!!!!! Great video as usual

this sounds reasonable
Oh my god! No wonder my girlfriend asks me to turn off the fan on her side of the bed before we fall asleep. I thought she was just cold!
Now you know.
lol
why you didn't mention Indonesia regarding the photo myth? the map is over there and being highlighted! the whole country!
they dont have to say every single country for each tale, geez, that would make the vid so damn long. plus ppl obviously saw the map if you did

"Don't open an umbrella indoors"
Axy Gaming I was always told it was bad luck to open an umbrella indoors, too. Lol
I know it's just a background but I like to imagine that Mike and Dan are actually on a pretty porch talking about old wives' tales
Really enjoy this type of videos :D
If Fan Death was real, I would have died years ago. I do it nightly!
Well i just looked in my camera roll and most of the pics w/ 3 ppl, I was in the middle....😂😅
Hey are you still alive?
when your ears are ringing someone is talking about you here in Florida. At least that's the saying. Love your channels
In India there's something like If you lick the utensils the food was made in (like a pan) after eating, it will rain or there would be a storm on your wedding day
A Dutch saying: if you make a funny face when the clock sounds 12, your funny face becomes permanent.
When you started talking about leg shaking I realised I was shaking my leg
I shake my leg all,the time unconsciously
I can't sleep without my fan on.
My parents used to say that if you point straight at the moon, it will cut your ear.
I LITERALLY CUT MY NAILS LAST NIGHT
The fan at night...always wakes me up, not to mention gives me bad dreams.
My mom used to tell me if I looked outside for to long, I'll see a strange creature outside that will kill me, and that if I played with shadows, they'll come to life and kill me
My grandma said don't cut your nails at night or else ghost will come
My family always told me that if you whistle at night robbers are gonna come in your house 😂
cutieee that's if you don't lock the door silly
I have heard of the fan thing. These are very interesting to hear about and I like that you guys researched the history of them. thanks!
My Mom always told us, "peeing in the street causes a sty" I never peed in the street but I had a few stys lmao!
in middle school they said every time we tear a page from our books a leaf from a tree falls.
also when you smell flowers, insects travel up your nasal path, crack your skull and chew your brain and eat your eyes out.
yep that was my third grade teacher
My family is not Asian at all, but my grandma used to say all the time that if your ears were burning, someone was talking/gossiping about you.
My family used to say if your hears "whistles" (meaning you hear a whistle) someone is thinking about you
I live in Texas, so I ALWAYS have a fan on at night in the summer and never open the window 😂
When i saw one Asian tale that is don’t cut your finger nails in the night or you’ll die
Me:i never know that and most of my nails are cut at night.
We all grew up with... and I've used them on my kids lol
1. don't pick your nose or you'll pull the strings and go criss eyed
2. don't play with your bellybutton or you'll unscrew it and tour bottom will fall off.
westerners aye! 😂👌
The small hands thing cracked me up. In Ndebele culture long fingers = you're lazy, small hands = hardworking
My family tells me all of these everytime, until now...
I still believe and obey them.
I'm Togolese (From West-Africa) and we have a lot of these as well, one of them is "Don't whistle at night or you will attract snakes/ misfortune".
Or dont eat seeds cause a tree will grow inside ur stomache XD Btw I noticed that I sweat the crap out of me when I sleep with the fan turned on haha
***** hahahaha

#1 Can confirm! Shake legs, am poor! :(
#3 Name one documented case where this has happened!
#5 That "makes sense" to you? Okay then...
My grandma told me if I don’t my rice my husband or wife will have pimples or freckles
The Stuff You Should Know episode on korean fan death was hilarious.
Hi, I was a couple of month in China and was faced with a lot of 'tales'. Thank you for the informations!
whenever I was little I remember walking on a carpet with red polkadots and whenever I steped in one of them this is what my mom said: don't step it them its fire. probably to trick me or something so I kept avoiding them LOL

Love your channel :)
I think the fan one started because in Korea, when a family member committed suicide, the family would report it as " death by fan" to save face
Very instructional. Tell us more about chinese face reading. I always enjoy your channels. Thanks, guys.
Wow, I grew up in the Caribbean & have also heard a lot of these tales as a child! 🤣
I heard that if you clip your finger nails at night, you will get nightmares. I think getting nightmares are better than dying lol.
The no house remodeling while pregnant one makes sense because it stirs up mold and possibly lead dust from old paint and even asbestos.
My mum used to tell me that if you don't finish all the rice in your bowl, as in there is nothing but air in your bowl, your wive/husbands face will be covered in freckles.
my sister tell me that if you sing while you eat, your husband will cheat on you.
What about never split a pear between two people... 3 or more is okay.. LOL superstitions!
About the idea that people with long earlobes are fortunate, I was taught that big earlobes means that you wear heavy earrings, which pull down and stretch your ears. Heavy earrings are usually made from gold and embedded with other jewels. To afford these earrings, you must be wealthy. Makes sense!
You earned a sub my Asian brethren, congrats
I know one Japanese wives tale where: If you leave your belly button exposed during a thunderstorm, lightning will steal it away. Idk what exactly would happen if lightning stole your belly button, but it's amusing none the less.
I talked about the fan death to a Korean friend of mine. She told me that Korean people believe that you will suffocate because it makes "oxygen move". ^^
-its because your "hands" small....
- what, no am normal size
Am I the only one who thought that was a sexual joke ? 😂
I love your Channel. growing up I heard from my mother if I'm out after dark a monster would get you
My parents told me to finish my rice or else every grain of rice would turn into worms in the future. Lol what even
....I sleep with the fan right beside me and on full blast every night...and I've done this for years 😐 how am I not dead?!
One I was told when I was younger and was a great deterrent on this bad habit. "If you chew your nails, it will make you stupid" Which, you know... as a small asian child, the last thing you want is to be dumb. So I never chewed my nails again.
I'm not even Asian and my mom freaks out every time I try to clip my nails at night xD
my mom said if the fork fell it means a male guest will come and if the spoon fell the female guest that will come. And if you bit your tongue ask someone to give you a number upto 26 then if they gave you a number for example 2, 2 stands for b in alphabet. then whoever u know that has a name starts with B it means theyre thinking or talking about you
YOUR SOUL WILL ESCAPE!...or you'll get a fungus
My sister used to tell me to hold my breath whenever we passed by a cemetery because if we didn't, we'd get possessed by a ghost
my sister tell me that if you sing while you eat, your husband will cheat on you.
"Don't renovate"
My mom built an entire deck while carrying me.
After attending a funeral, go directly home (like don't make any additional stops or visits) because spirits from the cemetery may follow you. This can be abated by casting salt upon the funeral attendee. I actually saw my Mom do this to a family friend!
i love this channel i am subscribing
I was told as a kid that anyone that gets a stye on their eye meant they saw something "inappropriate", such as dogs humping, lol.
Damn, I've been cutting my nails at night for all my life. Haha
My mom says that if your ears are red, that something embarrassing was going to happen to you that day☺️😊
