If I was crying, they would both come in and hug me when I was little. They're sad because I don't hug them as much anymore. My dad headbutts my brother and I so he gets some physical contact with us. Never said, 'I love you', they said it's weird saying the 'I', just 'love you'
Sometimes I feel that chinese parents in China are adapting faster to the western cultures than the chinese parents overseas (because they are all focussed on keeping that culture)
Federic Aujero I was searching for this comment 😄👍🏼 Every video in this channel that has "Asian" in it's title actually means "China". Hey dude in the video, are you really Asian? Or are you American? Coz you sound a lot like Murica 😅
For the "Where do babies come from?" question, I once asked my mum that question when I was younger and she told me she picked me up from a trash can... =.=
mine wasn't actually like this- i found out with a book my aunt had left (a medical book of diseases you already know what type im talking about) and i literally saw a blue picture (A.K.A Blue balls, i dare you to search it if you dont know) and i was like "Mom whats this?" and she was like "that...Um...That...well...sit down this is gonna take a while" 😂😂😂
1 "They currently own or have once owned a Chinese restaurant." What about a Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Laotian, or Filipino restaurant? I thought this is an Asian quiz!
A lot of these questions are too focussed on Chinese parents :(. Thai mums are not like Chinese mums at all. Sort of similar, but completely different at the same time.
I did that not because I was trying to find the ripe one when I was little, I thought it was fun to pretend my hand was Mario and I would just knock item after item to make it look like Mario jumping over the obstacles.
Me as a kid: mom can I join the Boy Scouts Mom: what they do at Boy Scouts Me: uh they go canoeing- Mom: No you can't go canoeing Me: you didn't even let me finish and why Mom: Is to dangerous you can fall into water and die Me: (sigh) Mom: why you have no respect Me: wait wha- Mom: why do you sigh in front of your mother!! Me: ok I'm sorry but I can swim and there are grown ups that watch us Mom: grown ups not enough mother and father have to watch you Me: mom I'm 9 Mom: go upstairs make your homework look at your sister making homework and she is best in class Me: I'm also almost best in class Mom: almost is not completely now go upstairs make homework Me: (whispers) God always so mean Mom: what? Go make more homework
I got 16 lol Lol my dad used to pick up a watermelon and hear it's sound then he would tell me "to get a good melon, hear its sound! knock on it! Do you hear it?" Then he would teach other shoppers who were buying a watermelon his method. Some people actually were actually genuinely interested lol xD
My mom kissed me only after I washed my face and never allowed me to kiss her b/c she thought my lips were full of bacteria that could contaminate her face or her face was not clean enough to let a kiss load on LOL! Of course, she never ever kissed my dad at least in front of me and both my parents believed that kiss on lips were not hygienic and people who did that were actually exchanging their saliva LOL!
The takeaway: Dan's parents are Americanized and pretty chill, Cheryl's parents are hybrid, and Mike's are the typical Asian parents like mine. I am team Mike on everything except the kissing because my Dad used to kiss me a lot when I was a kid.
I probably only got 1 or 2 points because my Korean mom was a rebel and a major pain-in-the-neck growing up. She is super affectionate and let us discover our own paths, but also humble brags to anyone who will listen and tried teaching us the Korean alphabet during summer vacation but gave up after 3 weeks.
I scored a goose egg on the quiz. My parents were so white, they needed to wear sunblock inside the house! Maybe I need to check my privilege.........yep, still there.
I never understood why parents had to explain where babies come from. I don't even remember how I figured it out, but I gradually learned about it, and one day I realized I knew.
I got 19. EVERYTHING WAS SO TRUE. I would go joint volunteering clubs at my school and my father would say "Why you volunteer for other people? Volunteer at home!" 😂
7:41 My grandmother would sometimes put a hard sugar candy at the bottom, and it worked for me, because the last thing I taste is what will stay in my mouth. I've forgotten whether the sugar was able to overcome the bitterness, though. And to be honest, I'd rather have it really bitter, than really sweet, because I can't even eat milk chocolate without my throat stinging from the sweetness.
21, No. My parents don't pay for my college funds. I pays for it myself. I don't want my parents to pay for something I don't know if I will be able to fully graduate from.
Mine got an 11 and neither are Asian! I did have an elderly friend from Hunan province. I called her Tai Tai and she taught me her traditions, foods, stories and behaviors. I am so grateful to her for her love. Also she cooked a mean hot pot in winter!
this isn't a good test..... especially cuz this test is more for Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc. I'm from the Philippines so the culture is pretty different
LegendaryMoshko Obviously, I already know that. But to be real, Asians should mean most Asians. Its just like categorizing all Europeans. Their cultures can be so different. Honestly I didn't care that much, I was already used to it. I was just saying how the test was not really for all asians
14/21 for me. And I'm sorry but those stereotypes are TRUE for Chinese parents. My parents never showed physical affection (even though it seems like they're trying to make up for it now that we have all left the nest...), were thrifty as hell (dollar store for almost everything!), expected us to do well in school (I'm surprised math didn't come up in the aforementioned quiz...) but never bothered with report cards/PTA meetings, used us and our accomplishments as their weapons of choice in talks with their friends, ALWAYS fought over the bill when we ate out with friends and relatives, made the worst herbal remedies using ginseng (which I kindly refused when I turned 18...), had the DUMBEST beliefs when it came to traditional Chinese medicine (the bane of wildlife conservation!), and took away our red envelopes when we were really young (until we got old enough and figured out that they weren't suppose to!).
+hmrhuang those traits you just mentioned were not bad at all (idk, i just felt the negative tone when I was reading your comment). They all show how much our parents love us.
it's true, my mom would stand and hesitate and my dad would just pat my back. Asian parents show affection would smile, when we fall or accidentally drop our favorite food like precious Oolong tea or dropping kimchi or rice then yell to eat it or just yell.
I found #6 really interesting, because in Latino families like mine, everyone is offering to the pay the bill at restaurants, otherwise everyone unanimously decides to split the bill.
My mother and father, and even a bit of my grandma, heard me speak so much English now, they basically now mix in some English and Cantonese with their sentences like what i do now lol (but they still speak mostly cantonese )
I got a 12/21 and my parents aren't Asian but dad is local to Hawaii and was very judging of me and held me to a hire standard than most western parents.
Oh, and may I offer some help with the water melons? Look, it's easy. While the melon grows steadily, its seeds stop growing after a while. As the melon still grows all around the seeds, small crevices are created arond the seeds. These little holes serve as amplifiers. When you knock on the outside, the deeper and louder noise you hear, the riper the fruit is. Btw, when it gets over the climax, and it starts to rot, the noise changes, too. The inside of the melon gets too loose and watery, so the sound gets muffled a bit.
Well in china, just like the west, there are sub-cultures and people in different social hierarchy as well, So it is quite normal for Dan to have "no so Asian" parents. I kinda feel sorry for Mike, coz I don't have parents like that.
12/21 so I'm more of a Dan lol. My parents are from Hong Kong, so even before coming to the United States, they were some of the most Westernized people in Asia. They taught me everything they knew about traditional Chinese culture, but always thought of Americanization as a key to success in America. My parents are very affectionate and love to eat out (that 2-star Michelin Italian restaurant Mike mentioned would be like heaven for them).
This is mostly my grandparents but a little of my mom and when my Grandparents first met my boyfriend they took out all of their wedding pictures and gave us marriage advice. We only had been going out for about a little less than a year. :)
I got 13-14 depending on how you look at things - for example, no fermenting veggies in the fridge, but there are other things that are fermenting in the fridge, like the dough for bread. The crazy thing is, I'm not Asian. I'm African - Eritrean to be exact. I was really surprised to hear other cultures do the plastic wrapping of items too. My mom use to do that. She said she does it so dust doesn't get into her items, but then spends considerable amount of time on dusting and wiping those items that are already plastic wrapped. It use to drive me nuts. And don't even get me started on her cleaning ritual of the plastic mat that covers the rug that covers the carpet.
Nightcore143 It's more of a general statement. I am sure Jon S is aware that there are plenty of exceptions on both sides. You even reinforced his statement by stating Asian parents push their children to study harder
My dad is half Japanese and half Korean, the oldest of 3 kids but he never did any of that with me. He only speaks English, but he never really imposed any of those things on me except for always saying that I could do better like the other kids my age despite knowing that I have learning disabilities even though I've been told that my own grandparents were a bit hard on him when he was growing up I never really went through any of that myself. I have a lot of respect for the Asian culture and am proud of my Asian heritage though
West Asian (Arab), and these are what applied to me: 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 (everything seems made with pomegranate rind), 10, 11, 12 (applies to all of my siblings except the youngest who is 20 but treated like a toddler by my mother :P ), 13, 14, 15, 16 (an attempt at arab poetry... but seeing as I have no memorisation skills, that fizzled very quickly, and dad has no patience), 17 (forever), 20 (during Eid, close family would give kids cash), 21 (scholarships, but they would have otherwise, so they assist in living expenses). TOTAL: 16 ... loads of similarities!
13/21 with one Asian parent and one western. It wasn't until my mid 30s and my mother was terminal that she began saying she loved me and hugging which was so strange, super uncomfortable.
Though I live in China, my parents are not so Chinese style. They couldn't play Qigong or ask for the free bread in western restaurant. I think it may depends on what kind of parents they have
My parents never owned a Chinese restaurant before. Mom came from a highly educated family and was highly educated herself. Dad came from an average family, but went to a top school in China. My parents would pick out the ripest, biggest melons, because they knew that they would get more for the same value. My parents would occasionally do the Asian squat, when they had to do some low-level work. Recently, Dad made a small stool, so the squatting wouldn't seem so tiring on their aging bodies. My parents were quite adaptable in restaurants. They would order whatever on the menu and ask for water, because water was free. My parents were quite civil and educated, so there was no need to argue about the bill. But sometimes, they would politely ask for the bill. My grandmothers knew a bit of qigong, but my parents weren't practitioners. Yep, in my early years, I really had to drink nasty medicine. Later, my mother would made me a nice warm bowl of savory Chinese radish soup to boost my appetite. Yep, my parents rarely took me out to eat. They only took me out on vacation, during moving from town to town, and during special occasions. That saves money. Dad never said "I love you" in Chinese or English, except when there was a song in Chinese, "I love you, I love you, I love you like how mice love rice!". Mom would say "I love you" in English but never in Chinese. But Mom would say something in Chinese to convey affection, like "You are my precious heart-liver!" My father would carry me, but not hug me. The term that Mike used was also used by my Dad, but he used it to carry me. Mom really was affectionate toward me in terms of hugging. My parents would humbly brag about my accomplishments. My parents would hold me to very high standards. My parents never discussed sex. But my mother was a medical doctor in China, and my father was a scientist. So, they probably felt sex education was important, so they introduced a children's book on human reproduction. When I was a preschooler, I had to recite Tang poems/nursery rhymes. I didn't date during high school or college. Because of my age and gender now, my mother now expects me to be married. I was allowed to participate in high school and college organizations, but I had a sunset curfew. At sunset, I must go home. Yep, my parents would keep preserved veggies, preserved duck eggs, and fermented tofu in the house, but now due to concerns of monosodium glutamate, they would stay away from those products, except tofu and tempeh. I never received red envelope money from my parents; I got them from my relatives in China when I vacationed there. I once asked for payment, but they stressed on the importance of familial interdependence. The best part was, they paid wholly for my college tuition with a large tuition discount due to my parents both being faculty members at the university. So, I graduated debt-free.
I'm 1/2 Filipino and I got 16/21. That's kinda impressive considering I'm just going off of my mom and she's pretty whitewashed since my dad doesn't understand/like certain Asian things.
Number 5, about asking for rice and hot water at western restaurants, I've actually never gone to a western restaurant with my parents, so IDEK if it makes them more or less asian.
"Where do babies come from?" I don't know about other kids, but I think some just instinctively knows it's not something you ask and just find out for yourself soon enough. Especially if your parents have enough friends and they take you to visit with them at these friends' house, and usually these friends are actually married couples. As a kid, when you see a woman with a swollen stomach, you either ask why is that and someone tells you "she's pregnant" or "she's having a baby" or you just instinctively/intuitively know that there's something inside. And then sometime later, your parents will take you to visit that couple again and you see the woman carrying a small baby with her stomach all flat, it would be stupid to ever ask "Where do babies come from?" again. Other specifics and details can wait but for now, all a kid has to know is that babies come from their mothers.
+Double Chen I am just wondering how comfortable Asians are about being generalized about? This is not meant as criticism but to give you an idea what I mean, My wife and I took this test along with you and I scored a 0 no surprise I am North American, while my wife scored 3. And she was raised entirely in Asia, but Southeast Asia. I have long known your show is about East Asia in general and China in specific, which there is nothing wrong and I enjoy watching it and learning from it. But Asia is west, central, north, south and southeast too. Do Asians mind East Asia/China being "the Asia/Asian" ? Thanks. Peace.
16/21. My parents are pretty hybrid, but that's because they have lots of Western friends and are very curious about the Western culture and food. I laughed at number 15, because I never dated anyone until I was 21 years old and when I told my parents I did, they tried to talk to me about sex and protection, but since they never had this kind of conversation themselves with their own parents they were so awkward and it was so obvious they didn't felt comfortable.
Number 11: My parents never really said "I love you" They said things like: "And clean the kitchen, while you're at it" and I just replied: "I love you too, Mum"
I know this is just fun but my eyes teared up when Mike said his mom asked for "hot water" at the 2 Michelin star Italian restaurant. We sometimes don't know how hard it is for our parents to adjust to a different life.
Asian parents. you're not allow to go out or hang with friends, no one is allow to come over.
Then when you past a certain age, 'y u no have friends, y u no socialize, y u no have boyfriend, y gay ?"

@Somiron Kunduyh same
If I was crying, they would both come in and hug me when I was little. They're sad because I don't hug them as much anymore. My dad headbutts my brother and I so he gets some physical contact with us. Never said, 'I love you', they said it's weird saying the 'I', just 'love you'
It's immeditate trouble that happened signaling dead punishments
Sometimes I feel that chinese parents in China are adapting faster to the western cultures than the chinese parents overseas (because they are all focussed on keeping that culture)
+Tav Tron 100% agree. XD
Partly because they still think western culture is cool before coming to the western countries.
@@peacefulgary7557 yup 100% also, the chinese parents that are choosing to adapt to western culture are in the minority.
I think this should be titled: How Chinese are your parents? Because it mostly talk about Chinese parents :)
Federic Aujero I was searching for this comment 😄👍🏼
Every video in this channel that has "Asian" in it's title actually means "China".
Hey dude in the video, are you really Asian? Or are you American? Coz you sound a lot like Murica 😅
All Chinese are Asian and all Asians have some Chinese in them. So they are still not wrong by this title lol
For the "Where do babies come from?" question, I once asked my mum that question when I was younger and she told me she picked me up from a trash can... =.=

Kira Yagami same for me
1 "They currently own or have once owned a Chinese restaurant." What about a Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Laotian, or Filipino restaurant? I thought this is an Asian quiz!
***** Lol you're right. But the word "Asian" is so broad that the meaning could be anything but I'm assuming they meant East/SE Asians
Hahahah I was thinking the same, even though I'm Chinese. But welcome to Mike and Dan's world, where "Asian" literally means "Chinese"! :D
U 4GOT SIBERIA PART OF ASIA
A lot of these questions are too focussed on Chinese parents :(. Thai mums are not like Chinese mums at all. Sort of similar, but completely different at the same time.
I GOT U MIKE! My parents never kissed/said i love you
+Karamel Krunch SAME
+artxpresskid1 me too! haha
mine said love u but never kissed
they never said they loved me... I think I would faint if they did... :D.. :D

That's "the worst". No pun intended

I dunno, my parents are pretty Asian but they always said 'I love you to me' like twice a day and gave me hugs and stuff
Whhhhaaattt? Knocking on the melon is an asian thing??? I thought everyone does that lol
Idk the bounciness? Lol I guess yo learn it from my parents
+Dan Chui (TheChinesePanda) I know right? And Dan, just do it, You'll know. I was also like "how do I know", but once your hand is doing it you know.
+Dan Chui (TheChinesePanda) my parents do that but i still can't tell now days i just slap a melon or water melon just to play it like an drum
I did that not because I was trying to find the ripe one when I was little, I thought it was fun to pretend my hand was Mario and I would just knock item after item to make it look like Mario jumping over the obstacles.
Me as a kid: mom can I join the Boy Scouts
Mom: what they do at Boy Scouts
Me: uh they go canoeing-
Mom: No you can't go canoeing

Lol my dad used to pick up a watermelon and hear it's sound then he would tell me "to get a good melon, hear its sound! knock on it! Do you hear it?" Then he would teach other shoppers who were buying a watermelon his method. Some people actually were actually genuinely interested lol xD
Hey guys, Not all Asians are Chinese
and also no all Asians are chinese looking , there are South Asians and Middle easterners too
Me : Where do I come from?Mum : You come from my stomach.END OF CONVERSATION.
if you scratch a mellon and the green comes off easy it ripe farmers secret
My mom kissed me only after I washed my face and never allowed me to kiss her b/c she thought my lips were full of bacteria that could contaminate her face or her face was not clean enough to let a kiss load on LOL! Of course, she never ever kissed my dad at least in front of me and both my parents believed that kiss on lips were not hygienic and people who did that were actually exchanging their saliva LOL!
Lol
Lol
+Ye Xu omg
u made me laugh😂😂 the saliva thing is true tho😂😂😂
wow. My mom is the exact opposite. I hated being kissed during elementary years but my mom always kisses me and then force me to return it XD
The takeaway: Dan's parents are Americanized and pretty chill, Cheryl's parents are hybrid, and Mike's are the typical Asian parents like mine. I am team Mike on everything except the kissing because my Dad used to kiss me a lot when I was a kid.
Haha yeah I guess
I probably only got 1 or 2 points because my Korean mom was a rebel and a major pain-in-the-neck growing up. How did your parents score on our quiz?
Very asian
+Double Chen 18

I got 16
+Double Chen I got 9 out of 21. :o
the whole watermellon thing is about density if it makes a higher pitched sound it means there is more sugar inside
I got 14/21 amd im not Chinese im Turkish
I scored a goose egg on the quiz. My parents were so white, they needed to wear sunblock inside the house! Maybe I need to check my privilege.........yep, still there.
...I am more Asian than my parents... O.o
...and I am not even Asian.
I never understood why parents had to explain where babies come from. I don't even remember how I figured it out, but I gradually learned about it, and one day I realized I knew.
I blame the internet for my lack of innocence
I got 5
But grandparents?? All of them
The "I love you" threw me off!! I say it to all relatives as a goodbye :) Even if its not a great conversation or you're upset!
5/21.
And I'm fully Chinese.
Lol same here
I got 19. EVERYTHING WAS SO TRUE. I would go joint volunteering clubs at my school and my father would say "Why you volunteer for other people? Volunteer at home!" 😂
I'm not even Asian and I got 18/21
7:41 My grandmother would sometimes put a hard sugar candy at the bottom, and it worked for me, because the last thing I taste is what will stay in my mouth. I guess so, I mean there are Filipino UA-cam channels out here, keep searching! :)
Cheryl's a great addition to the team. She's cute and funny. You guys should have her on the show more often.

+somiron kundu 9 and I'm from Europe
4, 6, 9, 10, 11, 15, 19 as preserved fish (dried hutki). I am Bengali
I got 14! I'm from Indonesia with Chinese parents. My parents are 2nd/3rd gen Chinese, but I'm still amazed how relatable this video is lol
14/21 for me. And I'm sorry but those stereotypes are TRUE for Chinese parents. OMAIGOD the brown medicine of DEATH
I liked that tho... It tasted nice.
If they have more than one item in plastic do we get addition points...just saying
Every time me and my siblings are forced to drink the herbal medicine we got a white rabbit.(The sweet)🐇
White rabbit candy is the only Chinese candy I like. But it's bad for you
+明莺黄 gives you kidney stone because of bad Chinese milk

Feel like this is more a Chinese test
is it a Chinese test
Yeah, they always put Asian in the titles, but it is mostly Chinese stuff.
That video was very intresting to me! Even I am a bulgarian, living in Bulgaria you could say most of this things for my parents!
1 out of 21. I'm happy my parents are white
+Emma why?
My mother and father, and even a bit of my grandma, heard me speak so much English now, they basically now mix in some English and Cantonese with their sentences like what i do now lol (but they still speak mostly cantonese )
Dude, Cheryl looks kind of like a female Xuimin from EXO :O
to me she kind of looks like tzuyu but that could be my eyes playing tricks...
I got a 12/21 and my parents aren't Asian but dad is local to Hawaii and was very judging of me and held me to a hire standard than most western parents.
14/21 My parents came when they were 15-16 :)
+borzix1 Thank you! I can't believe they didn't at least know what sound to listen for. This is important knowledge!!
tweph You are welcome.
I got 11/21 and im Arab
I got 11/21. I'm Mexican. :P
Im both.....
Im both.....
+SongofBeauty +Osado Pawwah My dads Palestinian and my moms Mexican 😂😂
And I'm from England
6:40 you are supposed to feel some buzzing/vibrating energy thingy if you do it right.
Well in china, just like the west, there are sub-cultures and people in different social hierarchy as well, So it is quite normal for Dan to have "no so Asian" parents. I kinda feel sorry for Mike, coz I don't have parents like that.
I think most people around their 20s~early 30s are hybrid nowadays.
When you knock a 🍉you have to hear is there an echo if there is and it is strong you found a 👌🏻😺🍉

This is mostly my grandparents but a little of my mom and when my Grandparents first met my boyfriend they took out all of their wedding pictures and gave us marriage advice. We only had been going out for about a little less than a year. :)
i got 11 out of 21
I got 13-14 depending on how you look at things - for example, no fermenting veggies in the fridge, but there are other things that are fermenting in the fridge, like the dough for bread.
Wrong title guys it should be how Chinese is your parents😂
I love your videos. I notice you guys got a little emotional when you talked about #12. It's totally ok. (smile)
English people don't have "the talk" we have lessons at school
yep. haha
I got right in the middle of Dan & Cheryl's scores! 14/21
Hispanics and Asians are the same /:
Really, now?
What? How? (I'm Asian myself)
+Catty Galaxy In what aspects?
Jon S Well it depends on the determination of the person, its just asian parents push their children to their academic limits
The squat thing also seems to be a thing upon Slavs
TOTAL: 16 ... loads of similarities!
lol I'm white and got 12 too
Number 6 is HILARIOUS! People have even bickered with my parents on receiving red envelopes.
13/21 with one Asian parent and one western. It wasn't until my mid 30s and my mother was terminal that she began saying she loved me and hugging which was so strange, super uncomfortable.
10/21 but that is the score for how they are recently. They changed a lot since I was young.
Though I live in China, my parents are not so Chinese style. They couldn't play Qigong or ask for the free bread in western restaurant. I think it may depends on what kind of parents they have
My parents took me and my brother to a restaurant everyday. My dad used to wrap remotes in plastic but no longer.
LMAO, my dad did the announce and hug thing to me at the airport too, Mike. It was honestly the most awkward moment of my life.
The hallow the sound when u smack a watermelon, the sweeter. Also pick darker green ones
Does it count if your parent owns a Japanese restaurant?
Yes, just any Asian restaurant in general.
I'm 1/2 Filipino and I got 16/21. That's kinda impressive considering I'm just going off of my mom and she's pretty whitewashed since my dad doesn't understand/like certain Asian things.
Alot of these were true for me, I'm Filipino-American. BUT my younger siblings grew up with a SUPER lenient version of my family. (15/21) LOL
does a ginger and tangerine skin in boiled water count as herbal medicine?
Number 5, about asking for rice and hot water at western restaurants, I've actually never gone to a western restaurant with my parents, so IDEK if it makes them more or less asian.
Hey I really love your videos. I'm liking this. Great job.
my parents always bugged me to wear a dress
"Where do babies come from?"
I don't know about other kids, but I think some just instinctively knows it's not something you ask and just find out for yourself soon enough.
Have you been to Buddha Bodai in Chinatown Manhattan? It's kosher and vegetarian Chinese.
Thanks. Peace.
15! (can't believe it either). My mom is Singaporean Chinese, dad is Dutch. Grew up, aka wasted my childhood, in Singapore.
They knock because if the melon is ripe it is hollow and if it isn't ripe it's thick inside
21.. even more if you have more listed in..
they even tapped the table when i served food for them..
I am from Jamaica. My parents always speak to me in Jamaican. Except for when they are trying to be fancy in front of other people.
