I love this movie -- great atmosphere, production design and special effects. Nice performances from the entire cast, especially John Lone and Alec Baldwin. And, a fun superhero origin story. Totally underrated, in my opinion.
The scene where The Shadow becomes visible on the stairs with his cloak flowing around him while laughing & the terrific theme score is absolutely epic!
I love The Shadow costume, he kind of reminds me of Darkman, and as for The Phantom, his costume version i like is from the 1995 Marvel comics version, i liked that gauntlet he wears
Dammit Man he a superhero? Anyway, what The Shadow and Green Hornet wears and their cars make more sense than Batman. The Shadow dresses closer to the man on the street as does The Green Hornet. The Black Beauty is equipped with all sorts of weapons and gagets but looks like a car on the street. The result is element of surprise where bad guys never see them coming. But a Bat costume they can see miles away and a car that stands out?
Brings back memories with me and my dad, we saw The Shadow and Darkman on the same day. Man, how great The Shadow was and still is. I still Love to see a Sequel with Alec Baldwin and the cast👍
What was wrong with people (i.e. critics) back than? It is a pulp film, and at that it's perfect. I would like to see more stories about the Shadow, and thus am all for a flick by San Raimi of all people, but this film is great in itself.
The thing that I appreciate the most about this film, is the fact that Shiwan Khan is the best version of The Mandarin that we'll ever see in live action. Give him knowledge of martial arts and the power of ten celestial rings - he'll be perfect.
The movie shall have return with a few sequels: “RETURN OF THE SHADOW” “REVENGE OF THE SHADOW” “THE SHADOW: BLACK DEATH” “THE SHADOW: STING OF THE SCORPION” “POWER OF THE SHADOW” “THE SHADOW: WRATH OF THE BLACK DRAGON” “THE SHADOW: FACE OF DEATH” “THE GHOST OF THE SHADOW” and “THE CURSE OF THE SHADOW.”
God-damn, how did this movie not become a bigger hit than it did? No, it's not perfect, it's a bit corny, almost camp in places, but it's EXTREMELY entertaining and often fantastically directed and acted. Although did you know that the hall of mirrors scene was supposed to be longer, including banter and flashbacks? Unfortunately an earthquake destroyed several of the mirrors they had for it, so they had to shorten it.
It's a shame that this movie was such a misfire because from a stylistic aspect it's amazing. I'm not a fan of Alec Baldwin but he was fantastic in this film. The first 30 seconds or so of this clip couldn't have been shot any better. The soundtrack is atmospheric and intense. But the script is weak and silly and the final execution just doesn't pull it off. You still can't beat the look though, they got it right.
I don't think the script is too bad. You have a protagonist with a compelling arc, a sidekick/love interest who is their own character and very strong. You have a great henchman in Tim Curry. Even the villain had potential as a dark copy of the main character. The ending was just not very strong for that arc, and part of that was the result of running out of money. Well, I'd actually say the script is more wasted potential than simply bad. BUt it is still an extremely beautiful film, well acted and decently directed.
Like you I am no Alec Baldwin fan, but he is perfect in this role. I love the movie except for one scene, when The Shadow and one of Kahn' s men fall off the building and The Shadow says, "Next time, you get to be on top." I almost rioted in the theater lol. Totally out of place and out of character.
Мужик, слабый сценарий? Скажи, что ты сейчас пошутил! На фоне нынешних фильмов о супер-героях, где сценарий напрочь отсутствует "Тень" выглядит эталоном для фильмов снятых по комиксам!
If you love The Shadow, you'll enjoy "The Shadow Strikes!". Filmed in black and white, it captures the effect of the pulps and film seirals while having the spirit of the beloved and underated 1994 film. "The Shadow Strikes!" Coming soon from Reacher Studios...
Idk about that. He may have been playing Khan from the very beginning when they first met in his lair. Khan was doing all this boasting about what he was going to do so maybe Lamont decided to play dumb in order to lure him into a false sense of security. Khan bragged that he could read Yin-ko's mind, but he made an assumption in the restaurant. You never did learn to control the phurba did you? He never said the tulku told me you never learned the phurba. It's just a theory. It would make the shadow a little more bad ass if it were true.
I would also like to see the Shadow return in a new movie, but I don't really want to see a remake of it. Just have the Shadow be in a new story against another villain. This movie is good too.
Soon...this winter/fall...and evil will rise...darkness will fall...and who knows...WHEN...The Shadow...will...STRIKE!!?? "The Shadow Strikes" coming soon...HAHAHAHA!!!
It's been over a decade. So it's usually pretty pointless to do sequels to old movies. That's why it's not done very often and when it is it's usually not a good result. Which is why reboots are the best way to go with older films.
Batman's still my favorite DC hero, but honestly, I like The Shadow more. I've loved the Shadow the first time I saw this movie, the outfit, the hypnosis powers, the laugh...it helped inspire my own superhero "Shadow Knight" and wrote a series for him on fictionpress. It's a sort of modern day pulp kind of story of 'what if Peter Parker was Bruce Wayne and became The Shadow instead of Batman' kind of deal. Here's a link: www.fictionpress.com/s/3279499/1/Shadow-Knight-The-Dark-Avenger-Book-One-The-Rise-of-The-Mastermind
Mister Who Well if you haven't seen the Marvel one-shot "All Hail The King" you'll know that the Mandarin is real so we might see something resembling Khan in a future film.
I loved the twist in 3, because I fell for it hook line and sinker. My issue is that a bombastic villain with screen presence gets replaced by *ANOTHER* Industrialist with a grudge against Stark. We've seen that twice already.
I found out that the final confrontation was to be longer, but the 'hall of mirrors' set became damaged from an earthquake and there was neither time nor money to fix it. The way the final movie plays out there is a sense that the Shadow / Cranston has realised something when he moves to the rear of the column of mirrors and that both characters know more about what is going on in that space than is shown in the actual film. Apparently, Kahn tried to undermine The Shadow by using the mirrors to show parts of Cranston's life as a warlord and the evil he had committed. You can get a glimpse of this in the actors' performances but it is very fleeting.
Definitely an under-rated film...Always wanted one of those Cord roadsters...made up with the sunshine cab dress...to drive around town in my tux....what a blast!
Every generation, there is a film (or two), so far ahead of its time in concept and execution, that it is doomed to be mistreated by critics and, usually as well, by audiences… The Shadow, in 1994 (combined with the monstrous competition it had at the box office), was it…
Yes, that scene was obviously ommitted in this video due to length restrictions. John Lone's character is trying to convince the psychiatric doctor who he really is, while every other patient in the ward is insisting they're Napoleon, or some other famous historical person. The Jerry Goldsmith music cue for that scene is 'Frontal Lobotomy'.
In the 50ts we watched 15 chapters of the **SHADOW** in Black and White....my siblings and i along with our cousins sat in the first -second and third rows in the movie theatre..Those were the days..
When Lamonts eyes went golden khan knew he fucked up only a true tengu master who has mastered telekinesis can control Phurba but I also believe that Phurba had changed his allegiance to Lamont Phurba knew that both Lamont and khan were both students of his former master the tulko and chose to side with Lamont :) best seen ever
I love this movie -- great atmosphere, production design and special effects. Nice performances from the entire cast, especially John Lone and Alec Baldwin. And, a fun superhero origin story. Totally underrated, in my opinion.
alancats extremely underrated film, I remember watching it for the first time on VHS and I was blown away by the film and the story.
It was underrated and ahead of it's time-like some other Super Hero movies in the 1990s were. If it had come out now,I think it would be successful.
Totally agree.
Probably the most underrated Superhero movie ever and certainly one of my favourites. This is an amazing finale to an amazing movie.
The scene where The Shadow becomes visible on the stairs with his cloak flowing around him while laughing & the terrific theme score is absolutely epic!
I dressed up as the shadow one year for Halloween and used the laughing and theme music to go with it
@@thesmilinator007 The Shadow would be perfect for Halloween, adding the laughing & theme score would really be great. Well done!
The legendary Jerry Goldsmith outdone brilliantly with the score.
I love the way his cloak billows
The Shadow - Best dressed comicbook hero ever.
next to the phantom
Old or Modern?
I love The Shadow costume, he kind of reminds me of Darkman, and as for The Phantom, his costume version i like is from the 1995 Marvel comics version, i liked that gauntlet he wears
@@Shadow-Walker-13 old
He's definitely one of the best dressed comic book heroes out there. No reason you can't fight crime and the forces of evil in style, right?
Say what you want about this film but DAMMIT MAN that costume is bad ass. Definitely one of my all time favorites in a super hero film.
Appearing at the top of the stairs with his cloak flapping as the music increases in intensity will always be my favorite part of the movie!!!
Awe-inspiring!! Best superhero entrance!! Imagine Darkwing Duck pulling off that scene.
Brings back memories with me and my dad, we saw The Shadow and Darkman on the same day. Man, how great The Shadow was and still is. I still Love to see a Sequel with Alec Baldwin and the cast👍
Which both done by Universal.
This was one of the best film adaptations I ever saw! Really well done. When I was young, everyone wanted to be Batman. The Shadow was my first pick!
As he should be. After all The Shadow was one of the inspirations for Batman.
#metoo
5:35 so fecking boss! The Shadow knows!!! One of the most underrated superhero films of all time.
What was wrong with people (i.e. critics) back than? It is a pulp film, and at that it's perfect.
I would like to see more stories about the Shadow, and thus am all for a flick by San Raimi of all people, but this film is great in itself.
That living Shadow at the beginning of this clip will always be the best part of this movie to me.
I love this movie..I wish that I had The Shadow’s power and use it against evil.
The thing that I appreciate the most about this film, is the fact that Shiwan Khan is the best version of The Mandarin that we'll ever see in live action. Give him knowledge of martial arts and the power of ten celestial rings - he'll be perfect.

“THE SHADOW: FACE OF DEATH”
“THE GHOST OF THE SHADOW”
and “THE CURSE OF THE SHADOW.”
I cannot think of any actor today that could portray as The Shadow in case of a reboot
God-damn, how did this movie not become a bigger hit than it did? No, it's not perfect, it's a bit corny, almost camp in places, but it's EXTREMELY entertaining and often fantastically directed and acted.

Jerry Goldsmith saves the day. Again.
So when Alec Baldwin becomes the Shadow, unmasked, he becomes Daniel Baldwin? Awesome.
Hahaha!
aww, you beat me to it LOL
When his face is revealed and he has to actually act he becomes Alec Baldwin.
@Iskander Massimov lol
Trent Reznor
What an awesome cape.
Awesome rape indeed! There is no rape finer! ONLY THE FINEST RAPE!!!
... Oh, you said cape. Uh ... Nevermind.
+DOOMED ! You're an idiot.
Without the shortcomings of ordinary capes because if it gets caught he can just make it into a shadow and escape.
It's a shame that this movie was such a misfire because from a stylistic aspect it's amazing. I'm not a fan of Alec Baldwin but he was fantastic in this film. why this movie is so underratted??
Trivia: Phurba, that living dagger is voiced by Frank Welker.
My Favourite super hero movie when I was 16
Shit, who wouldn't want to be the Shadow? He was so chic!
2:25 the shadow levels up and gains "control magical artifact" ability.
Idk about that. He may have been playing Khan from the very beginning when they first met in his lair. Khan was doing all this boasting about what he was going to do so maybe Lamont decided to play dumb in order to lure him into a false sense of security.

Classic lines Margo: Hey, how will you know where I am? Shadow: I'll know.
Back when you could say something like that and not seem like a stalker .
I would also like to see the Shadow return in a new movie, but I don't really want to see a remake of it. Just have the Shadow be in a new story against another villain. This movie is good too.

Did the animator who made the effects for the Shadow's cape at 0:24 also animate Spawn's cape and chains?
3:33 nothing has the right to be this fucking cool. Also, the Shadow's drip is off the charts. This shit is so stylin' it hits then and now.
I loved this movie, Alec Baldwin nailed this role
Alec did a fabby job here. Really rocking that look too!
There's one scene missing, when Khan wakes up in a psychiatric hospital
the best part
KHAN!!!
indeed

This is what The Mandarin is supposed to be like in Iron Man 3
Mister Who Well if you haven't seen the Marvel one-shot "All Hail The King" you'll know that the Mandarin is real so we might see something resembling Khan in a future film.
Mister Who Yes!! I was so pissed at how they built him up in the trailer and then when you saw the movie, they F'n ruined him.
I Also thought about that, Ben Kingsley could have been an anti Gandhi or like Khan but with ten power rings.
I think everyone agrees that one-shot was made because of the negative backlash in regards to how the Mandarin was portrayed in Iron Man 3.
I loved the twist in 3, because I fell for it hook line and sinker. My issue is that a bombastic villain with screen presence gets replaced by *ANOTHER* Industrialist with a grudge against Stark. We've seen that twice already.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The SHADOWWW KNOWSSS! HAHAHAHAHA!
I found out that the final confrontation was to be longer, but the 'hall of mirrors' set became damaged from an earthquake and there was neither time nor money to fix it. I like the very end when the shadow goes from live action to comic to showing nothing but his eyes.i always thought that was cool.
All my life. Still Waiting for part 2..
So Excited to be Cosplaying this at New York Comic Con 2015!
Definitely an under-rated film...Always wanted one of those Cord roadsters...made up with the sunshine cab dress...to drive around town in my tux....what a blast!
One of my most favourite films, I own it on DVD
I never noticed this before but the police captain pulls out a flask and takes a swig in front of everyone like it was nothing. Nice!
covid has ruined me. when he reveals himself at the top of the stairs, my first thought is, "the mask goes OVER your nose!"
Still better prepared for covid than Batman.
ahead of its time by miiiiiiiiiiiiilllllllllleeesss!
He ascended because he bested his own inner demon...(khan)
Best Wizard duel ever.
We miss you Jerry Goldsmith ❤️
É um ótimo filme! Aqui só faltou mostrar a cena pós-crédito! xD

This movie is so trippy and I love it

LOVE THIS MOVIE
5:50 THE SUN IS SHINING! BUT THE ICE IS SLIPPERY! WHO KNOWS WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN? THE SHADOW KNOWS! HA HA HA HA HA HA!
that knife is from the eddie murphy film "the golden child."
Great movie. They should remake this
Like cool movies.

I remember that was in the novelization of the movie.
Shadow unmasked - Alec Baldwin.
Shadow masked - Liam Neeson. That's what I thought when I saw this movie 1st time.
Imagine the Shadow being afraid of anyone.
There can be only one..
Love that Art Deco hotel - wish it was a real place!
Que linda peli, Alec Baldwin is so hot... these eyes...xd
awesome
The best part of the scene is the building being revealed! And you cut it out
Thankfully this film found success when it was remade into Batman Begins
Atomic 💣 Hey! that's catchy.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Alec Baldwin is great in everything he does.
Interesting Fact: The DC Comic character never had psychic abilities.
This is the man
Supet film
yep, you are not mistaken.
That knife left untarnished memories
yep nic3 theme nic3 plot legendary movie
What wrong with critics now. There still idiots who think this is the worst thing since Batman and Robin.
Nice
So much like the scene with breaking mirrors
