In the end, John Coffey WANTED to die, and was for a good reason. From what we hear from him before his execution, he told us of something that really bothered him. What was bothering him, was Man's tension and hatred for each other. It felt like that it was like pieces of glass, tearing right into him. He wanted to go to be with God the Father, where he knew in his heart, that the absolute hatred that some people feel for one another, and that affected him, would be forever gone. He knew that, with God the Father, there was only love, joy, peace, and happiness, forevermore! He wanted to go to be with Jesus...and I believe that he got his wish granted, the moment that the Executioner pulled the switch, and sent lethal jolts of electricity coursing through his body. At that moment, he became absent from the body, and present with God the Father, at least in Spirit. One sweet day, the body of John Coffey will come out of the Grave, and be reunited with John's Spirit, and then it will become a Glorified Body, never to die no more!
