The surgery was quickly scheduled afterwards to have my hernia removed without question. The surgeon was the only man who treated me with respect.

There is DEFINITELY bias in the medical community as far as chronic pain control. It isn’t a black or white thing, it’s an overreaction to illegal drugs killing a lot of people, and prescription drugs being blamed for it. Now, people who actually need help can’t get it.
To be fair, I've had family know people who got addicted to pain medications from the hospital after surgery.

Not just race. There is a TV ad running in Australia at the moment about closing the pain gender gap.
Ah... in the UK too, but with good reason.....women who complain to their GP of pain are far more likely to be dismissed or deemed neurotic ,than men. I've had the experience myself. My husband went to our GP with back pain and came home with a sick note and codeine. I went and came away with the order to exercise, stay at work, and take an aspirin. I had a ruptured disc. Husband just had mild strain.
There actually is a pain gap for gender, well researched and documented. Women have a higher pain tolerance innately. Even so, serious pain is ignored or dismissed as dramatic. Men’s pain is less likely to be dismissed to the bias that men are less likely to seek attention in the first place.

I am a nurse that currently works in dialysis. We have a lot of patients that are diverse and one thing I can tell you is taking pain medication in large quantities. Can damage your kidneys and end you up on long-term dialysis treatment. You have to sit in a chair attached to a dialysis 3 x a week. I would not be encouraging people to take Advils, ibuprofens, and Tylenol on a regular basis.
Not only do you have to go to the hospital 3 times a week but you must be attached to it for about 4-5 hours... And if you do the home treatment with different type of dialysis it is 8 to 13 hours.

My mom was on dialysis for years before she died and she used to take Excedrin like it was a vitamin.
I was a young ICU nurse in 1980. We had a young man admitted in a coma and in acute liver failure from taking too many Tylenol. He had pulled or torn a muscle rafting and was taking 10-12 Tylenol 500/daily (double the max recommended dose.) Even aspirin can kill you if you overuse them. IIRC he was 27 or 28. He died.

I bought a bottle of Advil nine years ago, seen on the label it was made in China. Haven't bought a bottle of Advil since.
I am not black and I suffer from a condition that causes chronic pain. It took me forever to get a diagnosis because my primary symptoms were all pain related and my pain was not taken seriously by doctors. It’s not because of race, it’s because they do not know how to deal with chronic pain conditions. They are told that if the MRI doesn’t reveal extensive damage then pain cannot be present and is likely psychological. In fact, they often treat people with nerve pain by giving them antidepressants. For some people that works - because some pain is psychological. But for people like myself that it doesn’t work for, they sort of shrug you off because they can’t put you in a box.
It’s not racism that causes this. It’s a problem in our medical system that mistreats people with chronic illness of any kind. You have to check their boxes or they write you off - no matter what color you are.

@@davidsimms2806 They are totally fine as long as you don’t over-use them, like significantly more than recommended every day. It’s a different pain reliever (Naproxen Sodium), but I like Aleve for headaches. You can also alternate between NSAIDs (which Advil and Aleve are) with Tylenol. They are safe to take like that, alternating every few hours.
Ibuprofen actually fucks the stomach lining. Tylenol goes after the liver but yes I head what you're saying 100 percent

I am about as negative buoyant as they come. When I was in the Army, one of my drill sergeants was so sure they would be able to train me for the water survival training...
By the end of it, he looked straight in the face and said, "Don't feel bad private. Many of my black brothers-in-arms can't tread water". It wasn't until years later that I learned about negative buoyancy.
Its a bonus, trust me. Fat boys float long enough for the sharks to find. 😱
@@brianmurphy6480 Floating looks like you're already dead, no telling how long. Having to keep making enough thrust to keep your head in the air makes it obvious to sea life that YOU are still "fresh".
*Lawrence, first thank you for your service. Every DI is made aware of this phenomenon and was also something my black buds used to joke about. Excellent bone density, high muscle mass and low BMI are the pluses, making those guys Combat Course and PT Test stars. Um, except for the gettin' wet part. Then we kept the flotation devices handy.
