Prince - 39 albums in 39 years. So many styles. I was 13 in 1980 when a friend played the single (7" vinyl) "Uptown" off the "Dirty mind" album. Been a fan ever since. ✨💜✨
So glad you dove into Prince via one of his most popular "pop" songs, Raspberry Beret. You will find that Prince was a musical chameleon as he wrote, composed, performed, and produced all his music. His first major hit was "I Wanna Be Your Lover" in 1978. Here's a list of his most formidable hits from the 80s: "1999", "Let's Pretend We're Married", "Little Red Corvette", "Let's Go Crazy", "When Doves Cry", "Baby I'm a Star", Sign O the Times", "Housequake", "Alphabet Street", "You Got the Look", "Thieves in the Temple", "Kiss" ❤
If you love music , and you love making music, then you would love Prince , because he was one of the greatest musical minds in rock history, he lived, breathed, ate and slept music, he could write songs , arrange them, play every instrument in the studio, sing all of the background, mix it himself, then go onstage live and perform it better than anyone else. People consider him a modern Mozart, and in his life he probably made more music than anyone else in the music industry…
What a wonderful and open reaction. I was lucky to grow up during this time and it felt like everyday was a new song that was amazing. Looking back we didn’t realize how lucky we were. Prince was a once in a lifetime artist. So many great songs.
I find it hard to believe someone never heard prince before. HE WAS THE BEST his vocals are amazing he can sing high and low and hit every note. He also makes sounds in notes that noone else can hit
His whole music catalog would take you a really long time to comb through. Start with the hit songs, that in itself will only take you the next few months...if you do one a day lol
You’ve never heard music until you’ve heard Prince and Stevie Wonder. Until then something will be missing. 💜💜♊️♊️ The two greatest singular artist musician songwriter singer producers in terms of overall talent and innovation and influence in the entire history of the rock and roll era.
Prince is a great songwriter and singer. He combine R&B, funk, rock,,,,, Check his 1999, when doves cry, KISS, lets go crazy, and so many others. He also has written for other legendary artists like Chaka Kahn, the bangle, sheila,,,, the lists go... You already love him give it a try..
As a fellow Brit who was lucky enough to see him live 16 times when he graced our shores, I recommend moving ahead a couple of years to 1987s “I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man” Extended Version from the Sign O The Times concert movie. Make sure it’s the extended version so you can sample a tiny bit of his virtuosity live. Welcome to satisfaction!
Have to listen to "When doves cry" ..... a fantastic song, my absolut favorite ..... but in real ALL Songs from Prince are really, really great pieces of music !!
A little background: The Revolution was the name of the band behind Prince from 1979 to 1986 with a varying line up throughout the years. Prince was the frontman and wrote 95% of the music they did. The band got together again after his death in 2016 and still play shows today. The line up that most people are familiar with is the Purple Rain era 1984 line up, when the band consisted of Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, Matt “Dr. Fink” Fink, Mark “Brown Mark” Brown, Bobby “Bobby Z” Rivkin and, of course, Prince.
I’m 55. I remember when this was on the radio vividly. My sister played her cassette constantly. I pretended to hate it, but I actually loved it. Still to this day. Prince is a hero. Suggestion? 1999 or Red Corvette.
A beret is a hat invented by the French worn by men & women & military personnel throughout the world. In the U.S., one of our top military units is known as the Green Berets. Prince was an amazing singer & guitarist! Some more Prince songs: When Doves Cry (this is my favorite song of his), 1999, Little Red Corvette, Let's Go Crazy, Purple Rain.
American? :) It seems all Americans always suggest Little Red Corvette (and other 1999 and PR songs) while he got real big in Europe starting with this song right here. I'd suggest songs like Sign o the times, If i was your girlfriend, Girls & Boys, The Question of u, I could never take the place of your man (long version) and especially many, many live performances.
Prince is a journey...a wonderful music journey...there's so much brilliance out there from every stage of his career...and for me...its great seeing younger people getting into Prince and appreciating him...and I have to be careful at my age...lol...saying it was better in my day...😂...but it was better in my day...😂...I hope u continue your journey into Prince...u will discover an artist like no other.....enjoy

Is this how good music was? Yes, and this is how good Prince was. He was so very unique. As a further suggestion, the song Adore is an absolute must and for something completely different, The Ride (live) is another side of Prince’s many, many styles.
This is a great first tune to start your Prince journey with, as this was probably midway through his career. While I never stopped being a fan, Prince like many artist over a long span of years can often change styles, genres and bands. So this was the era I most enjoyed and didn't really partake in much of his music past this point in time, not because it was bad, but just not so much my style of music. But to see him perform, was to see a legend and he could have played "Mary had a Little Lamb" and you would leave saying you had seen one of the best, and that never changed for me. He was most certainly a once in a lifetime talent, R.I.P.
Your deep dive into Prince will be a mentorship and inspiration for your own music making. He was THE WAY for Artistic Music Expression in the 80s. His live performances took his studio tracks to another level. Prince's cover of "Motherless Child" is worth checking out. "Let's Go Crazy" and " Purple Rain" from the 1985 Syracuse concert are also good. The official music videos are fine, but Prince's live performances are extraordinary.
Prince is my #1 fav and you are in for a VERY deep rabbit hole. My first Prince suggestion for you would be to check out "If I Was Your Girlfriend" and "Damn U." Thanks and subscribed.

I trust you now know how to say, and what is, a Raspberry Beret now, ha-ha. Love your reaction. The realisation that music in your own lifetime has been poor in comparison to the past, is quite something. I agree that there is still great music about, but that it seems harder to find, so when you listen to the kinds of artists you have, and someone like Prince in particular, it is going to blow your mind. And to realise that competition for chart positions was so much greater in the past, particularly in times likes the late 70s and the 80s, compared to now, especially with diluted charts based on various things, like downloads, radio plays, streams, as well as physical sales, when in the past, we just had physical sales. So many great Prince songs - but you have to listen to "When Doves Cry".
True story. My first love actually did wear a raspberry beret of the kind you'd find in a second store when I first meet her. We dated for 5 years. Still talk her 30 years later from time to time even though she's now been married, got kids, divorced and remarried in the mean time. This song always reminds me of that moment when she waved away the blonde slightly curly bangs from under the beret and looked me in the eyes for the first time.
You really can't go wrong. Back in those days there were two particular groups of fans. Michael Jackson and Prince. Each group claims their idol was the greatest of all time so have a great time going down that road. Plenty of other great artists but those were the two most heralded and most versatile. Dance, ballads, funk, rock... Too much to choose from but all worthwhile. Personal favorite of mine from that same era is Sign of the Times.
Stop right now and do the Prince dive properly. Go back to his first album and start there. It will be a looooooooong but enjoyable life changing event. Believe me i've lived it. Get on it girl and so refreshing to hear your energy. YOU ARE SO ON THE RIGHT TRACK WITH PRINCE.

People who don't know music would always compare him, Michael. People who know music call him the Mozart of our times. Of all of the legends in music, he had more to do with his creations than anyone else.
Let me try to explain… IMO , I’m 63 years old and a Prince fan since 1978, and most people my age , we all played artists like Micheal Jackson around our kids , because it was all G rated, but Prince was more risqué, more adult oriented, so most didn’t play Prince around the kids, and he didn’t allow his music to be played in movies, tv shows and tv commercials, or even to be sampled. When you hear a Prince song (other than the snippets of his hits “Purple Rain and “ 1999” ) it was because you played it yourself. Prince had an incredible catalog of music from the late 70’s till his death in 2016, music they he released himself, and music that he created and produced for others, so you have a lot of music to enjoy…
Welcome to the Gold mine of 80's music young lady. Prince is just one of the many geniuses from that era. A few other humble suggestions 4 u include: Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, U2, Van Halen, INXS, Tears for Fears. Eurythmics, Los Lobos, Midnight Oil, Depeche Mode, Fishbone, Siouxsie & the Banshees, David Bowie, REM, Iron Maiden, The Clash, The Replacements, RUN DMC, The Beastie Boys, Queen Latifah, Sade, The Go-Gos, Devo, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Pat Benatar, The Ramones, The Pretenders, The Police and a few dozen more. Enjoy. 🤘

Love this reaction! Prince is one of the 2 or 3 "total package" entertainers in all of music history. Raspberry Beret is just the tip of the iceberg:) I'd check out 1999 next. It was released in 1982 and is a fun party song about the end of the world:D and is also a great representation of the Minneapolis Sound which he's the nucleus of. Adore is 🔥
Beret is a french style hat.
The girl who hands him the guitar is wearing a Raspberry colored Beret.
Omg you're still a baby; how could you be aware of all the wonders that came before? He has penned so many songs that it's almost impossible for me to make recommendations. However, I am fond of Diamonds and Pearls, Damn U, Eye Hate U, Adore, and Let's Go Crazy just to name a few. Enjoy your Prince journey...so excited for you!
Thanks so much for the encouragement and for sharing your favourite Prince songs! I’m excited to explore more of his music and dive into those tracks you mentioned. Your enthusiasm is really motivating. Stay tuned for more reactions!

People who don't know music would always compare him, Michael. People who know music call him the Mozart of our times. Of all of the legends in music, he had more to do with his creations than anyone else.
Let me try to explain…
IMO , I’m 63 years old and a Prince fan since 1978, and most people my age , we all played artists like Micheal Jackson around our kids , because it was all G rated, but Prince was more risqué, more adult oriented, so most didn’t play Prince around the kids, and he didn’t allow his music to be played in movies, tv shows and tv commercials, or even to be sampled.
Prince is or was the man!
Enjoy. 🤘

New subscriber here. Your journey down the Prince "Rabbit hole" has only just begun, You have 40 years of Prince yet to be discovered and experienced. Try "Controversy" by him next.💜.
You´ll need a whole lifetime to discover the whole Prince discography, literally. As for me, some of the greatest songs are the least ones known. Like 5 Women, Ripopgadazippa, The Ride, Damn U.....God way too many to name. Just give me any genre and I´ll give you a ton of great Prince songs in that genre.
Imagine he´s also the author of
Sinead O´Connor - Nothing Compares To U
Martika - Martika´s kitchen
and many others.
You need to watch the question of you live Prince and how come you don’t call me anymore Prince
Listen to Prince - Adore ❤
Don't ask "is this how good music was?" Ask "is this how bad music is now?" It's called talent.
Modern pop music is unlistenable.
