Lounge rules can be confusing to people not accustomed to flying first class, but Delta’s rule of not counting Mexico as international (for lounge purposes) is also typical of all US carriers. See their website for details.
US Airlines do not consider Canada or Mexico international for purposes of lounge access, so in this case they were correct here. American Airlines is the same way. The info should be on the website.
Maybe it would've been a good idea to learn the rules rather than assuming...valuable lesson for the future.
