I love books like this as subjects for Back Issues- so much of the magic is in the art, so Sal trying to explain it in words leaves them like "what are you even talking about" and he can only respond "no, i know but trust me it's badass" i feel like that's a feeling any comic book fan can relate to
I think that since Superman: Legacy comes before The Authority that Gunn is going to do "What's so Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Dream", but instead of the Elite he'll fight the Authority. Then again I might be reaching
Two things I sometimes fall asleep to... Back Issues playlist on repeat, and Caravan of Garbage on repeat. Today I thought, where did I hear Sal talking about Mr. Sunday? Did i dream it? I think Comic Pop is like Clerks and Weekly Planet is like Clerks 2.
currently been doing a readthrough of the wildstorm universe, so this is dope to see. this period from the late 90s to early 2000s with stormwatch into the authority, wildcats 3.0, sleeper, planetary, mr majestic, automatic kafka etc was genuinely probably the most consistently good line of superhero books in a single universe ever printed
@@Skipntosh yeah I love that book so much. it’s kind of amazing it was allowed to be made at all at a mainstream publisher, even if it only lasted 9 issues
The Authority Vol 2 coming when? I can't wait to you guys talk about the fakengers, the hospital scene, the drill, the doctor and a bunch of insane shit that only Mark Miller can make.
Now I hope to see you guys cover planetary one day. I loved the authority because it was different, but I love planetary for all the same reasons and more. Arguably a series that doesn’t get as much mention as it should, but a beautiful one nonetheless (despite the disappointing reality of Ellis’s controversy a few years ago). Prior to that, I remember just enjoying that book so much long before The whole ellis controversy. I still enjoy it. Easily Elli’s best work. As always, a joy seeing you guys cover comics is always a joy, Comic Pop!
Sorry for your loss. I know how it feels. I can only speak for my experience but holding onto the good memories of the time we'd spent together did a world of wonders.
One of my favorite graphic novels! I'm sure the creation of The Authority gave us things like "The Boys." If The Authority didn't get people thinking it may have come around but years later...
It's really cool that yall did the Authority because about 2 months ago I saw the omnibus for it at my LCS and just bought it out of pure collecting. Reading it, I had a fun time lol
Another great show! ... Tinny itty bitty bit of constructive criticism, that I offer with kindness in my heart and all the love in the world... Tiffany's mic sounds like it's underwater.
Yeah, Sal noticed this while editing, but since this content is all off the cuff we couldn't recreate it. We had noticed some strangeness with Ben's audio for a few shows but thought it might be placement. It wasn't until I was using it that we discovered it was just going. A replacement was ordered and already used. 😊
"Addressing the elephant in the room, Warren Ellis is a creep." I'm curious to see if Neil Gaiman will get any more coverage on this show, and if so, what the disclaimers regarding him will be going forward.
Complete coincidence, but I love that this came out the week after Gamorra and Kaizen Gamorra's family are part of the major plot of a Black Label comic in Waller vs Wildstorm
Yes!! I'm so excited!!I always hoped you would cover the Authority but never expected to actually see this! Thank you so much! This was really fun! I also liked the zensor thing. That was nice. Thank you
Loved this episode! Sal and crew, planetary episode maybe? At its core it’s a pulp book and I really dig that. I also love how episodic the book is. Would make for a fun conversation.
Its got some cool out there concepts for sure, but its just so dumb and blunt. Might makes right and violence is the solution to any problem. Tiffany's reaction at around 1:17:30 sums up this comic.
There has been at least another surviving "century baby" besides Jenny Sparks: Elijah Snow, over in "Planetary" (also the two are confirmed to have shagged up in the past).
Sal said something that made me die laughing: I vividly remember the Image explosion...& something we started saying after awhile after looking at all the art...specifically the Wildstorm books... "all this shit is starting to look THE SAME."😂😂😂
The theory I have heard is that they are setting up the Authority with the film to later use them as a standin for superman vs the Elite somewhere down the line, which would make sense.
I'm walking my friends through One Piece and I started doing Sal's patent "... now I know what you're thinking..." technique: answering several questions in one go
Still a top tier episode, I don’t know if anyone else rewatches comicpop, but I have em on for a few hours a day, while I do other stuff. Sending love.
I think I first encountered the idea that time travel means arriving in the same point in space where the Earth isn't as in a _2000 AD_ series called _The VCs_ (which I probably read 10 years ago but was written in the 1970s) in which there's a gun that shoots its targets a few days back in time. And yes, I talk about the galaxy's greatest comic a lot in the comments of these videos, but _The VCs,_ while not terrible, isn't the kind of thing I think everyone needs to read ...although I'll gladly suggest some _2000 AD_ titles I DO think everyone needs to read if anyone wants to have that discussion.
This is great i love hearing about teams i didnt read, thank you for this, i may need to pick up this volume only because its so awesome. also strangly Tiffany was slightly muted in comparrison to Sal and Ethan
Yeah, Sal definitely noticed this while editing, but since this content is all off the cuff we couldn't recreate it. We had noticed some strangeness with Ben's audio for a few shows but thought it might be placement. It wasn't until I was using it that we discovered it was just going. A replacement was ordered and already used. 😊
I have a soft spot for the Authority, mainly because of how much I love Midnighter and Apollo lol ❤ but yeah, some of the stuff in the first run is ... interesting
28:04 Warren Ellis/Bryan Hitch still has the best 'coming out' with the Midnighter and Apollo that i've seen in comics today. There were some panels (as far back as their Stormwatch debut) that possibly kind of hint they may have a relationship and eventually in the Authority they confirm it on the page shown at 58:39. I love that they sprinkled the hints visually (show not tell is a lost art these days) so when they confirmed it those panels came flashing back to me and i had a new appreciation. My gf of course picked up on it a lot faster than I. They're still my favorite power couple to this day.
Mark Millar definitely sorta wrecked everything once he took over. I often hear that Planetary is a ton better... Maybe I should stop wasting time and actually read my huge book, lmao!

Didn’t you do Planetary by Warren Elllis? (My favorite non-DC/Marvel series) Elijah Snow was also a century baby. Btw I enjoy Millars run on Authority a little more than Ellis’s.
Couldn't find any comment about so here it goes: Just add about Jenny being the spirit of the century, she embodies what that century was so her power is electricity cause its the main element on the XX century. Every other baby borned that same day are century babies. Ellis uses this concept to fit basically every literature/pulp/comic /cinema pop culture creation into a self defense system on planet earth, the concept its pretty much more explored on Planetary. @@TheRealZubes oh no, Jenny being the spirit of the century is an unique thing, there's only one spirit for every century. The only thing in common between all century babies is the long life spam. 32 minutes of explaining the team has to be a new record for any comic pop episode. What a Great episode, i love that book.
Me too lol I read this stuff at least 15 years ago. Can't believe we might get a movie lol
Is wrong that by the end, I was expecting a "this leads into Onslaught?!"

Now we just need James Gunn to announce a Planetary movie so Sal can introduce the rest of the cast some insane archeologists
And of the greatest books ever in comics. That and I think is Ellis’s best work.
Can we just have the Planetary
Just wanna say I love how Cammy's Street Fighter 6 design is very Jenny Sparks-esque

I love the begin of an episode when Sal gives us a lore lesson not only on the book, but the wider comic industry of the times.

Cool idea but yeah I don't think they're doing that, they'll fight but just because the Authority are a bunch of stupid assholes
Certainly a weird book to feature on my Birthday Back Issues but any ComicPOP video is a great ComicPOP video
