Yeah, it's insane how the creator of something as perfect as All-star Batman could also be responsible for something as bad as Dark Knight Returns. I mean, DKR is literally just a rip-off of Zach Snyder's objective masterpiece, Batman V Superman, and Miller should be ashamed.
NGL the Dark Knight Returns is pretty overrated. I’m not saying there’s nothing to appreciate, but I definitely think it’s overhyped for a minimally decent elseworlds story. Also most of the stuff Frank Miller has done since then has objectively sucked.

So I was thinking. I wish DC would release a comedy line in which it plays completely serious, but everything is a joke. Batman is exactly as he is in this book and he truly DOESN'T understand how Hal's powers work. And then each of the other major DC characters has some horrible quirk.

Naw Frank Miller was always trash. He just got lucky. DKR is a horrible understanding of Batman. But it was a refreshing take on Batman for it's time. Edgy/Anti-Hero Batman is the norm now so it doesn't hold up.
Actually the whole Yellow impurity was fixed in Green Lantern Rebirth, where it was retconned that the central power battery was the prison for Parallax and his influence made the rings weak against Yellow
Gotta love those formative multi-hour car drives around the city so your local psychic milk delivery service get a kidnapped child's face on the next morning's milk cartons.
that's because he's not Batman he's actually a crazy hobo named Steve who found a Batman costume and won the lottery, becoming inspired to be Batman. all fear Crazy Steve
There's a Kevin Smith show how Jerry Robinson - who claims to have created the Joker and had a strong influence on Robin - had plans and drawings about the clown at the circus being a boss-man and causing the Grayson's murder instead of Boss Zucco. Thanks for explaining alot of things I didn't get. I guess it was better than I thought.
Wild thought: What if this book is REALLY an illustration of a series of brainwashing treatments The Joker administered to Dick Grayson over an X number of years that turned Dick Grayson into "The Joker-clone that we saw in Dark Knight II?" After all, Sal, you said that all of the Miller "Batman Stories" are in the same continuity, so it's possible that this was a distorted re-telling with a Batman who does what The Joker would have done if HE were Batman (his determination to lamely impress Dick Grayson with his "Are you lame? I'M THE GODDAMN BATMAN!" line as well as his needless hounding of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern and Batman's "inexplicable need to laugh" when he breaks the law!). At least that would justify Miller's need to ruin Batman: Year Two along with DK Two. Just a thought....
But the way he handled it ruined it. The change after year one was so sudden it was unbelievable. In year one batman was nothing like this. It would've made sense if there was better context other than "pressure"
Someone should retcon this story by having that 5th dimensional leprechaun villain from Superman appear. It turns out the little guy was behind this story, mucking up reality because he got tired of losing to Superman. Batman was just practice. And this story never finishes because the leprechaun is confronted by Bat-Mite, who wants to put things back the way they were. That story could begin with the very last page of this story. That would make it a brief, fun filler story.
The series was a hot mess yet as a reader you kept coming back BECAUSE it was ahot mess and you wanted to see what happened next, like to see who else could Miller fuck with even more.
joe mcnoe i thought this was an actual thing all the way until I saw “social justice league,” because everything before that is just crazy enough to exist, but there’s no way any writer’s self-parodying to do SJL
It's like joker and batman's personalities switched. Batman is a violent laughing psychopath that blows up cops, burns criminals alive, and kidnaps people and forces them to work for him. While joker doesn't even smile and says he's not funny.
Idk I think this series has a lot of cool moments! It’s story has a lot of great moments and,of course, spectacular art. It does have a super crazy Batman but I think that’s actually refreshing and different! I think the main problem is that the series was never finished so you have no ending.
ComicPOP! Over the past few days I've watched a bunch of your videos. Seriously love the discussions. Very in depth, easy going, well-spoken and very instructive for me cause I'm fairly new to reading comics. Keep up the great work guys!
Frank was probably in the back office snorting coke and thinking batman must do this then that Jim will be the person who takes the blame and just goes crazy with drugs
I have finally* caught up to the latest episode of Back Issues! The asterisk is because I found this channel four days ago and have binged this series since Monday. It's pretty great. Anyway, I know Sal is not big on X-Men, but I would love to see a treatment of the big events like the Dark Phoenix Saga, Fatal Attractions, the Mutant Massacre, X-Cutioner's Song, because they're so iconic, and Fall of the Mutants and the Onslaught Saga, because they're so dumb and I want to see them ripped apart.
If this is supposed to be set in the same universe as Year One then Batman must’ve been hit by something that completely changed his personality. In Year One he’s violent, but not sadistic. He goes out of his way to help civilians caught up in his battles, and gets enraged when a bunch of corrupt cops try to take him out and go overboard when there’s civilians around, but he doesn’t kill them. He goes from helping save an old lady and saving Gordon’s son unmasked to recklessly mowing down cops, nearly killing Vicki Vale due to his recklessness, and kidnapping a kid and psychologically and physically torturing him. It’s like someone hit him with a Bizarro ray or something. And in DKR you get the sense Batman and Superman were at one point friendly and that they worked together, but in this book Batman is an asshole to Superman and blackmails him into doing what he wants. Frank Miller had no idea what he was doing with this book. It’s such a shame, because All Star Superman is amazing and this should’ve been amazing, but then Frank Miller decided to go all batshit crazy.
You guys should do something involving Daredevil because of his show coming out. Born Again is great and Frank Miller wrote it before he went absolutely insane.
I have a theorie with this comic, and it is that that this batman is the bob kane and bill finger first batman the one that kills, and when Robin cames out to be the boy wonder, Batman stops killing because now he has a boy to care. Is like joker says in death of the family, that because of the bat family Batman is soft. Still realy funy video
Oh my god, I got myself a scotch and furiously fiddled with my balls in anticipation of your next video! A bit crass, I know, but it's one of my favorite lines from Bulletstorm and is the only thing that came close to depicting my anxiousness.

THIS IS THE GREATEST GODDAMN EPISODE OF GODDAMN BAT-ISSUES EVER!
Will Hensley Goddamn right!
Over 100, 000 views, folks! THEIR TIME HAS COME!
Frank Miller had some real gems like Batman year One and The Dark Knight Returns but when he got older it's like he lost his mind !
I mean, you can go back and read Year One and the dialogue is still weird and janky. Also Sin City was a trash fire
Naw Frank Miller was always trash. He just got lucky. DKR is a horrible understanding of Batman. But it was a refreshing take on Batman for it's time. Edgy/Anti-Hero Batman is the norm now so it doesn't hold up.
Actually the whole Yellow impurity was fixed in Green Lantern Rebirth, where it was retconned that the central power battery was the prison for Parallax and his influence made the rings weak against Yellow
braam saget Kewl
So glad they changed that, I never really got behind it as a weakness.
Ben Baragona yeah me too how can it be the most powerful weapon in the universe but be weak against custard.
Gotta love those formative multi-hour car drives around the city so your local psychic milk delivery service get a kidnapped child's face on the next morning's milk cartons.
frank miller seems to actively dislike every character that has superpowers.
My Favorite Back Issues! Great work!
xFatalFailure A high honor! Thanks!
This is my fav Back Issues. So hilarious
great show Sal, Ethan and Ben. thank you
Devina Mendez Anytime, Devina!
thanks for watching!
that's because he's not Batman he's actually a crazy hobo named Steve who found a Batman costume and won the lottery, becoming inspired to be Batman.
all fear Crazy Steve
Ranma Toushin Bat-Steve
Don’t ever tell Batman to chill out

There's a Kevin Smith show how Jerry Robinson - who claims to have created the Joker and had a strong influence on Robin - had plans and drawings about the clown at the circus being a boss-man and causing the Grayson's murder instead of Boss Zucco.
Thanks for explaining alot of things I didn't get. I guess it was better than I thought.
I was just about to make the same comment 34:34
That's how I always felt about this
Kobe Walsh Then you came to this conclusion far sooner than I did. I'm impressed!
I kind of hoped that this was a series of delusions Batman had in the Court of Owl's maze.
Caitlin Brewer Then why was Robin being victimized by Batman? Wouldn't Batman be the one mentally tortured by what was happening if he was the victim?
Allen Babylon I like the idea that Bat-Mite went nuts and became the Goddamn Batman.
Ethan and Ben go through all 5 stages of grief in this episode LOL!
My favorite episode. I’ve watched this probably 5 or 6 times
Best back issues ever, the second time round I couldn't stop laughing.
Thanks ComicPOP.
Jim Lee deserved better on this series...
Yay it's fixed :0) tv little house is my favorite comic channel I love it when you guys upload
Hornpile Pheonix Thank you so much Hornpile!
glad you guys are getting the attention you deserve
The series was a hot mess yet as a reader you kept coming back BECAUSE it was ahot mess and you wanted to see what happened next, like to see who else could Miller fuck with even more.
joe mcnoe i thought this was an actual thing all the way until I saw “social justice league,” because everything before that is just crazy enough to exist, but there’s no way any writer’s self-parodying to do SJL
*See what the critics are saying about "All-Star Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder"!:*
_"Oh my God....... This is Trash!"_
-Ethan
i know this run was nuts, but I enjoyed it because it was so over the top.
This is not the Batman I married
Lol I KNEW you were going to say "Because he's Batman."
ETHANS backkkk! Nice work guys it's only getting better. I'm actually heading down from ct to funny comics tomorrow to pick up some comics.
Renzo Pareja Nice! What'd ya get?
It's like joker and batman's personalities switched. Batman is a violent laughing psychopath that blows up cops, burns criminals alive, and kidnaps people and forces them to work for him. While joker doesn't even smile and says he's not funny.
I love this book. It's such a good time. Also, you guys were hilarious.
Idk I think this series has a lot of cool moments!
It’s story has a lot of great moments and,of course, spectacular art.
It does have a super crazy Batman but I think that’s actually refreshing and different!
I think the main problem is that the series was never finished so you have no ending.
First vid I watch of you guys. Excellent stuff!!!
Thanks!
ComicPOP! Over the past few days I've watched a bunch of your videos. Seriously love the discussions. Very in depth, easy going, well-spoken and very instructive for me cause I'm fairly new to reading comics. Keep up the great work guys!
TheHappychondriac Thanks! So glad you're enjoying them ;) And welcome to comics!
Josh, welcome! I've read all those X-Books, and they're perfect for Back Issues. Rest assured, one day.
That is an epic binge, good work!
this... this is the greatest one of all back issues!
Remember when frank miller was normal?
Me neither
Back for my now annual rewatch.
Very entertaining welcome back Ethan
Armand Muniz Thanks Armand!
That was worth the wait. The Crisis of Infinite Loops was cool too though.
John Frost lol Thanks, John.
This is one Frank Miller stopped becoming a great writer and became the comic Industries drunk uncle among many other drunk uncle's
Well, well, well as of today's The Dark Knight III announcement it sounds like the ride won't end yet for you and Miller
I think this is the most excited I've been seeing a Back Issues in my sub box. This damn book, man.
i4njw Hope you dug it!
TV Little House Comics Indeed I did. The reaction to the six-page foldout was great.
i4njw I have never seen anything like it before with comics. #mindblown
Kevin Bravo Not bad. Thanks for checking it out!
Oh my god, I got myself a scotch and furiously fiddled with my balls in anticipation of your next video! A bit crass, I know, but it's one of my favorite lines from Bulletstorm and is the only thing that came close to depicting my anxiousness.
Allen Babylon lol
I approve of the scotch. Hell, I approve of it all!
If you don’t think Batman eats rats then you’re living in a fucking dream world
