  • The Zeltweg 1000 km was a very special race for several reasons. But the two most important were that it was the last race for the incredible Pedro Rodriguez who died a few days later in an accident while racing in Germany. The second reason was that this race was the last one on European soil where the 5-litre engines would be used due to the change in engine regulations for 1972.
During the past 24 Hours of Le Mans a lone Lola T70 Mk3 competed with the VDS Racing Team. And this was the car we chose for this race at the Osterreichring (Sunoco colors, didn´t have time to repaint). We thought we could go face to face with Porsche and Ferrari in a shorter track than La Sarthe, although in real life the T70 was far from them and it was already an old model in 1971. But guess what? It wasn't that bad at all and although we didn't fight for the win, we were able to maintain a good pace through the race.

I was really looking forward to watch this, cause I had a lot of fun driving in Zeltweg in my runthrough of the 1972 season. I like this old layout of the track far more than the modern one. In my eyes a very beautiful mod, which captures the panorama so well. And looks easy to drive on first sight. But it is all about the long, fast curves. You can loose a lot of time by entering in wrong angle or speed. Especially the last before the straight to finish line is so tempting, but sharpens quickly. As you saw in your first round. Deja-vu for me there. 🙂
Surprised about the good speed of the Lola. In my run the Alfas were not to beat, but you kept the pace - and took advantage when lapping the field of Porsches. Without the hit in 14:55, a Podium almost looked possible.
Clean, good driving. Thanks for this! Enjoyed it a lot. Have a good start into the new week.

Yes, I was surprised how good this Lola performs. In fact I was regreting not have used one of these for Le Mans even being a 4 speed (there was another one available).
I wanted to at least stay close to the 917s using the time lost by them overtaking the GT field, I know a bit optimistic 😁, anyways I could race the Alfas not doing any mistake. The private Alfa was not a problem but the other three official Alfas were very fast.
      Thank you for watching👍

@@Racer63. Yeah, but in your defense: This Alfa model was first introduced in 1973 and was far more powerful. You would have get the right model of that time (no mod at the moment, unfortunately) with the Lola for sure. 🙂
Always like to watch your videos! And looking forward to Norisring. 🙂

@@overcrest3186 Yeah I thought it was a 72. Anyways my T70B was even older... The beauty and the beast.
