  • In this video I take a 1980's Radio Shack Off Roader and remove the old pcb and servo and replace them with a traxxas XL5hv esc, receiver, and servo. One of the goals here was to not cut or modify the truck in any way. I did however drill two small holes under the tail light covers to put led's in.

I have the blue version. I was going to mod mine but the more and more I see people modding theirs, the more it makes me want to keep mine STOCK. I have so many RC's to bash with using modern tech... Sometimes it's nice to just pull out a truly vintage RC. Love your mod though! Great job!

These were awesome in stock form, putting modern electronics in them brings them to a whole new level.

Do you know where I can get transmission parts? I’m missing some gears on one of the spindles.

That is a tough one. I have had some success 3d printing the plain spur gears in the primary reduction and front driveshaft bevel gears out of pla. The spider gears in the differential are so small they are hard to 3d filiment print. Mabey a resin printer would work better. The easiest option is a donor truck.
      Thanks for watching.

Anybody know if the original remote control will pair with an updated receiver?

I bought one of these on eBay about 10 months ago to do exactly what you're doing. I got it for 5 bucks. No radio. The only thing with mine is it came from the south and the sun ate most all of the decals off but the plastic is still in great shape. But it's all gutted and waiting for a spot on my work bench. Do you have your 3d printed parts available on shapeways for people who dont have a 3d printer? My only wish is, the motor bay was large enough to fit a 380 motor. Oh well. Life is good.

Hey there. I have not put any of the parts on shapways i just havent had time. I belive you can have my files printed by them though if you just send the files you need to them. There are people who advertise 3d printing services as well. Usually pretty cheap. Thanks for watching.

@@allaird1 Thanks for offering those files for free. Makes converting that RC very easy.

How is your mod going? I purchased my old blue one back off ebay a couple years ago also intending to upgrade/mod it but I ended up doing a nice restoration and keeping it stock. I love seeing what everyone else is doing to their Radio Shack 4x4's!

@@Baneslayer Ive got all the parts on the shelf. Im saving up to get some 3d prints from shapeway. I have a sandscorcher from Tamiya that needs some 3d parts also so Im going to get them all at the same time. So many RCs and never enough money!. LOL I should have it finished by mid summer if not sooner.

@@sagnhill Thanks for the reply, I totally hear you on the "never enough money". Too many projects and hobbies these days and they all cost a lot! Good luck! I need to 3d print or buy a spare part battery cover for my 4x4 off roader remote control.
