- Keith and Jesse back at the bench! Today we are taking this awesome old school RC from Radio Shack, and bring it up to speed with some new modern components. We are stripping out all the old electronics (except the motor), and recycling our old esc/receiver combo from our Axial Yeti Jr. CAN AM build. also will be using a SAVOX servo we had laying around the shop to spruce up the steering. We hope you enjoy, and stay tuned for more great RC builds!

your tires are on backwards lol and i loved my blue one i had.
It's driving me absolutely CrAzY!
Had this truck. My brother had the yellow one. 2 speed (manual high and low switch) . Brings back memories!
Funny thing... I remember these being so much bigger!! Lol. Damn getting old sucks
@@ProNoobRC Yeah I know what you mean, I used to have one of these in blue and I remember driving it and the water cause it would kind of float with those tires but I ended up killing it from being in the water......
And I just recently built a Tamyia Grasshopper that I bought about 5 years ago because that was the 1st hobby quality RC car I ever owned and just taking the parts of the box I realized that it seems so small now compared to what it was when I was a kid.
Out of the 6 or 7 RC cars I have one is a radio controlled Kei trucks and the grasshopper isn't that much bigger than it.
Love this video. Seeing it bought back memories. I used to take mine mudding(in the backyard.)
Sweet resurrection of an old toy (not for children) grade RC into something much better. Looks like a lot of fun. My vote is for the blue one to keep original but that’s probably because I had the blue one many years ago and you are right, there were never enough batteries around to keep them going🤣. Nice work.
Wow what a blast from the past I had the blue one and loved it so many great memories flooding back.
You put the front wheels on backwards and makes my OCD go bananas lol.
Oops! I missed that! But now they’re all pointing forward lol! My bad! I feel your pain on the OCD!!
@@ProNoobRC haha yeah I should have waited till video finished because I noticed that they were facing right way by the end.
Awesome little truck and thanks for the video brought back so many good memories.
I had the blue one, it was tough for a cheap rc.
Mine was a cobra masher lol... Gi Joe hot wired Bigfoot and used it to run over the cobra opposition!!! Until the remote broke and the motor went out. Disappeared after that and makes me sick just like the gi Joe Abrams tank.... God I miss those days... Everybody wasn't a crying snowflake then. Saturday morning bugs bunny and then outside playing with friends and toys. Wtf happened to the good ol days???? Nice vid memories.....
Right!?!? So sad these days are!
What happened to the 3s speed run.... ?
I had this! A yellow one. I made about a 100 ft long rubber band chain and tied it to the bumper, then I pulled the truck back about 500 ft, and let it go, hahaha. It came ripping at the house at about 75 mph and slammed into the brick on the house, lol. And no more truck.
Keep the yellow original.cool pick up.
I had this same truck, won 20 dollars when I was 8 at a remote control obstacle course event we had at our school. 😊
Nice!! I used to bog mine through piles of Legos!!
I had the yellow one and my brother had the blue one as kids. I remember thinking how fast and powerful they were at the time lol.
Had the blue one back in the 80s. Fucking LOVED it.
Me too!!
I had one of the yellow ones when I was little. I loved that thing
I still remember using this truck to run over my neighbor's new RC car on Christmas morning.
Bahahah! Me too! I ran over my sisters toys as soon as I got it! Lol
The yellow was my first rc truck
Mine too!
I had the blue one my brother had the yellow one
Tandy is Radio Shack’s corporate name. These were made by Tayio in Singapore for Radio Shack. Tayio also made stuff for Tyco.. your front tires are backwards. A brushless 380 size motor would be a perfect fit for this
You put the front tires on backwards
Caught that! Lol fixed em up!
Excellent video guys, you earned my sub, love this truck. Please check out my R/C channel if you get a sec!
I have the yellow one in a tote in my closet. got it back in the 80's I think you put the front wheels on backwards.
Still have this little truck! Love seeing this remix! Wish I had what it takes to do this rebuild! Great work!
Hey, love the video. First time seeing your channel. I really love the idea of putting modern electronics in old toy grade rc cars. I'm getting ready to attempt it myself for the first time. I'm trying to learn all I can so I don't mutilate it. I picked up some good advice from your video. This is a really cool hobby.
I had this as a boy and absolutely loved it! This truck was the gateway to my first hobby grade rc, the gold pan rc10! I’m 38 now and still heavily into rc bashing and now also have two sons that join me.
Also 38 my first was the Tamiya stadium blitzer. Loved it! When they re-released it in 2000 I grabbed it and built another just to put on the shelf. That’s awesome your kids love Rc too! Far too many are Hooked on the social media and don’t pick up any sweet hobbies like this
I’m really close to the same story. My first RC was the yellow version, second was the Tamiya frog buggy, Then came the RC10. Honestly the yellow truck was the toughest out of them. I beat the crap out of that thing. It never broke. Just realized this is a year old post 🤦🏼♂️
This car came out in the 1990s I have a very similar one the offroad tiger it came out in 1993.
GreT rebuild but you put 1 of the axles in backwards,
I had the yellow one. Its was back then when monster trucks just became bigger.. when big foot came out. So they took that 78 -79 ford truck body... I had bunch those radio shack trucks as a kid.. and nikko and Tyco.. and shensei rc cars and trucks.. I still have couple still stock and still runs. I have 2 4wd black buggies from radio shack.. I have shensei 57 chevy bel air car that I should do this to because electronics are gone/ dont work anymore
I'm interested in the elctronics. I got a yellow one that doesn't work
I could send you some
@@ProNoobRC sweet! How much?
I had a yellow one, currently looking for a yellow one now for my shelf and possible son.
Tandy didn't make the truck. Taiyo is the company that made the truck. Tandy is the company that radio shack came from basically.
Had both of them when I was maybe 10 yrs old ….. u forgot flip over the front tire 😁
I have the yellow one somehwere
Gears aren’t gonna last long driving like that on 2s. There is a lot of play in the two speed gear box on these making them more susceptible to stripping. Also the 4 c batteries are what give the truck a lower center of gravity and better traction off road.
Shatter or candy? Lol
Heck who knows!? Lol
I have one of the old radio shack red arrow buggy too I still have it but I'm looking for a gear that stripped out.
Oh yeah nice ! Reminds me of my first R.C truck named the “ Clodbuster “ huge monster truck to me as a kid lol.....
My uncle had it and I still remember it!! Loved that old rig!
@@ProNoobRC I have the same exact truck!! What motor did you put in yours?? I put a Traxxas 380 in mine and it is crazy fast I see other guys putting lipo or brushless motors in them and they scream I would be afraid of stripping
Out the gears but I guess if you're gentle they will hold up! Man you did a great job!! love it!!
I had this truck. Had bought it off the shelf. Wish I knew where it ended up? Will u consider selling?
Actually we have 3 and will sell 2 n fact
Do u have a yellow one?
Yup
This brings back so many memories I had the yellow one as a kid and your right man this truck seemed huge as a kid
Right!?! Lol! I hate getting old!
fitted the wheels on wrong sides the tyres were going backwards
You put the front tires on backwards. hehe
Lol! Busted!
I still have a blue one and Thats all I have ever seen is blue ones, I’ve never seen a yellow one
Parabéns tenho um desse e vou fazer igual
hola tengo uno amarillo me encanto tu trabajó me encantaria que lo isieras en el mio como puedo contastarte.???💪
that's cool looking I think I had a yellow one back in the day.
Bring it out in the snow it won't even move need better tires
Now do the Baja Bandit from Tyco!
I still have one of these that was the big foot model .
In Germany the car was called Taiyo Colt 4x4. I made the same conversion like you.
Awesome!
Wow.!!!! I had one of those when I was a kid.!!!
For sale?
Yup
Alright dude I had this RC from radio shack as a kid, as well as the yellow truck body version, also had the Wild Horse RC and the smaller Wild mustang truck, also the dune buggy's Super Lobo and Super Lobo 2 . This brings back so many memories. !!
Just wait!! More awesome conversions from our childhood are coming up!!
sweet memories. This is my era!!!
I had this truck. I remember it had a two speed controller. At high speed the batteries would last an hour at most.
2 speed switch for transmission on the bottom yup. Such a cool little truck and built solid! They’ve lasted this long I haven’t found one that is broken yet
Found one of these in mint condition on the side of the road with a bunch of other things the home owner was getting rid of. My childhood heart that grew up poor and always wanted one has been so jacked by this find!
Nice score!
I got the blue one for Chrimstas in 1986. My sister got the yellow one. We had so much fun driving them around. I just bought a used one again to upgrade like this. Thanks for the video!
Brings back so many memories! My brother got a yellow one in 86 also so I plan on building him one to give as a gift for bday in April
I have one of these. It needs new tires (dry rot) any idea where I can find some?
We have a donor we would sell you if need.
I have the exact same truck but it was yellow. I painted it metal flake sapphire blue. Wanted it to look like "BIGFOOT". Would like to get a list of all the components you retrofitted if possible.
I used the esc radio combo from an axial rtr 1/18 yeti!
wow, something to see the yellow one. think the last time i saw mine was around 1989 no joke.
Me too! Then we found 1 of these then 3 now 5 lol. Lucked out!!
Please provide parts list... i want to restomod as I still have my yellow 4x4 truck. This is great!!!
We used the rx/esc and radio from an axial yeti jr. was cheaper to buy the car and take electronics out.
This is Pam's old man I have a blue ford from radio shack 4x4 like yours my angina is gone and my tires are shot do you have any of these two parts thanks Steven.
Sure do! Send us a message on Facebook and I will ship the parts over to you
I have the yellow truck ,in great condition, just controller doesn't power up with new batter. Could you give any ideas
Any signs of corrosion on terminals? Usually just need a cleaning with rubbing alcohol
front tires going frong direction.
Keep the yellow factory. Much harder to find in good shape. My first digital proportional rc!
I have a 4x4 black off tiger version one unfortunately the servo in it doesn't work other than that it's in pretty good shape only can go forward and backwards plus slow and fast speed work
Easy to upgrade it! Follow along in the video and send it!
Is it possible to send you my two RS Dash 4x4 trucks for the mods? One for me one for my son.
Yup! We can do that for ya! Shoot us message on Facebook ot insta
How about a Radio Shack Eradicator with new system? 😁
We can do anything! Send it over! Lol
I love projects like this, I built a RadioShack catamaran into a pretty sweet brushless boat. With liscence plates for mounting and Chinese electronics it went 3 or 4 times faster than stock.
I loved doing that also at a young age! Lead to this awesome hobby! Thanks for watching!
ProNoobRC Yeah us rc noobs gotta keep quiet so nobody raids the goodwill for old toys like these
The front wheels are backwards
Also i be worried about putting too much stress on those gears with a bigger motor
Yeah I agree. somebody was mentioning, putting some neodymium magnets on the outside of the motor can to increase the power of it. a bit but not a ton. I guess it just increases the strength of the fields.
I see a lot of folks talking about having a yellow one and a few blues, but here in VT I'd never seen or even knew they made a yellow one. As a kid, I had a black one, and have since found another as well as a blue one. Maybe it was a regional thing?
I think so cause we mostly had the yellow ones around when I was a kid.
Aw man thats cool i have some radio shack lambos from about that time i have two one red one white im gonna have to mod them both tho because theres no controller unfortunately. I will likely run lipo and brushless motors in them tho since im gonna have to go all out anyway donit all the way
That will be awesome!! Please share results with us
I had the yellow one as I kid. I wish I could do the same kind of upgrade back then.
These bring back so many memories!! But yes battery’s we’re expensive as heck in the 80s lol
I'm curious how you would upgrade a nylint rock crawler?
Theses actually quite a bit of info on building those rigs up from many years ago on rccrawler.com if ya wanna see some cool and easy mods
Hello, I have a yellow one. I loved your work. I would love for you to do it in mine. How can I tell you???💪
Send us message on Instagram or Facebook
That was a great video. I have one of these and I've been wanting to do this for a long time. Thank you
Cheers!
Could you tell me what would be the easiest and best kit to buy to restore that same yellow model !! I'm new to that kind of stuff but I'd like to try !!
Let me find you best option and get back to you
Front tires are backwards. I had that same truck when I was a kid!!! RadioShack was the shit !!!
Agreed!!
Wow. I had the blue one. Thanks for the trip down memory lane
No worries!! Cheers!
Great build! I love the idea of modifying old toy-grade RCs into hobby-grade ones but I would also love to turn non RC cars and trucks into hobby-grade RCs on a budget. Any advice on parts or kits that I can use for a range of 28th scale to as large as 24th scale (on a budget). I know of several options for 18th scale or larger but they won't fit into the vehicles I'm thinking of. I'm hoping to find a DIY package that includes everything but the vehicle itself. Any advice?
Oh wow! Classic!
The2 front tires need to be switched around the treads in the wrong direction
From the thumbnail? I pointed em all forward is that wrong?
Mine was yellow and friends was blue. 2 20 year old kids having fun in the mud. Completely submerged in water and kept going LOVED IT
Hey
You said open diff front and rear but this not quite right. It has a single diff at the rear and left and right sides are locked.
As far as elecronics there seems to be more tonthem but in reality there is way more electronics in newer systems. They are just smaller and hidden in cases. Also, those old electronics were so not reliable.
Yup agreed
Hard to explain but you nailed it lol.
Whoa!!!!! I got this truck for Christmas when I was 7 years old!!! So 1988
My lil brother and I had the blue one and the yellow one I think in 88
Awesome! And heck! They still work!
Ill buy it right now i had this blue one and the yellow one as a kid.
I have 4 ready to be built if you’d like!
That's awesome of you for trying to pass the guts on.
Yes we have sent out a few sets of old guts from our conversions we do on these to the guys that want to fully restore these not just update. Definitely can’t bring ourselves to just toss those parts out either lol! Cheers!
As soon as I seen the thumbnail for this video I had flash backs to being a kid and playing with my blue one. I do still have mine and went to dig it out of storage before making this comment. Although I could not find the radio the truck is almost perfect. Great times with this little truck, now it's going in my "man cave".
This takes me way back. We were doing this stuff back in the early 90s installing proportional electronics in RadioShack, sears, etc. cars.
Amazing the power you can get out of those Mabuchi 280 motors.
Keep the blue one
interesting. but pls no more annoying music
Not happening Flash Gordon! Lol! Cheers!
I had a blue one when I was around 10. Also, your front tires are on backwards! LOL. They also sold these through sears.
Any one know what the port on the bed is for?
Nope! But let me see what I can find pulling it apart
I had the blue 1 and think I still might have it put up somewhere, played with that thing HARD as a kid lol. But somewhere along the line years ago I picked up a 2nd 1 that never ran, it was red with the same style body but had a white cap for the back like a Bronco and MUCH larger tires. Did they make another version of this truck. And no it does not appear to be modified.
I am not sure! But now I am intrigued! I’ll go do some googling and figure it out cheers!
@@ProNoobRC I always wanted to get it running but thought it a lost cause. I never realized up until I started watching youtube recently that modifying RC vehicles was really an option. Time to go through the spare room....
I had the yellow one, and I ran that thing into the ground. Later on I got the semi truck version, and my brother got the blue one.
I had three of theses you are the man !!! I did 1991 put lights alla round ;)
Very cool I loved mine and they was actually a very reliable RC at the time. Lots of memories.
Ficou show
All you have to do to get more power out of these old RCs it's really cheap and easy to do buy some little neodymium magnets online stick them on the outside of your can wear your motor magnets are make sure you get your North and South right and it's like going from 2s to 3s you get low-end and high-end it's crazy
Oh really!!
Going to have to try this!
Would it be possible to mod it so it works with a modern rechargable battery without replacing the ecs?
Yup
@@ProNoobRC Thanks, any idea, what characteristics the battery should have?
