In Auckland, New Zealand we still got an Arrow loop and corkscrew coaster at Rainbows End. It's the same layout as the one Sea World Gold Coast used to have.
I made this my 200th coaster on October 11th, 2019. Drove 9 hours from NJ to ride this before its demise. One of the best decisions i’ve ever made, spontaneous trips are the most memorable
@VACCINATE YOUR KIDS ALREADY! The Arrow coaster at Calway Park is a generic Arrow Corkscrew based on the original prototype first built at Knott's Berry Farm. Vortex is a custom looping coaster built by the same company but featuring an entirely different layout.
I was lucky enough to ride this on its first day of operation AND in its final season. Vortex was always one of my favorites. The number of inversions was insane for its time
This is the very 1st coaster w/ inversions that I rode! My parents used to take me & my sister to King's Island every summer. I ALWAYS wanted to ride it, but I was too little. I'll never forget how happy I was when I finally grew tall enough to ride and how nervous I was. Lol But I worked up the courage & haven't looked back!! This brings back some fantastic memories. 😀
Call me crazy if you want... Why does RMC only retrack wooden coasters? The Vortex is a fun ride, but it would be a HUGE crowd pleaser if it wasn't rough. I know people are gonna say "you just gotta know how to ride it", but not everyone does- it's not like there's a sign posted out front- and even when you DO know how to ride it, it still isn't as smooth as most of the other rides at Kings Island (or anywhere). Not saying it HAS to be RMC, but wouldn't it just kick ass if Kings Island retracked this thing and got new trains for next season?
They could do a Morgan retrack too, or hire vekoma and have them combine their rights to the old arrow track and their new smooth track, it could bring back the roughest of loopers
First ride that I rode on with inversions. It was very smooth back in the 90s. The order of ride was Beast and then Vortex every time we went to the park.
So sad this is leaving, cannot get out to ride it one last time so I will ride it here. That back seat first drop and decent into the loops were amazing.
I remember going to King's Island back in the late 1980's when I was a college student at Cedarville College. I remember this ride so well--this POV brought back memories, like I was watching an old home movie. I remember that climb to the top, the turn, and then the drop. Thanks for posting this.
I love this ride yea people have a love or hate relationship when it come to this ride but no one can argue that it looks amazing especially when you're watching it off ride.. R.I.P VORTEX
It’s actually tragic that KI tore this iconic coaster down for no good reason to not keep it running. Even Cedar Point respectfully keeps their older rides like Blue Streak, Gemini, and Corkscrew going even though those rides are well past their prime. Just the history of this coaster alone should’ve been enough to keep it going. It’s greatly missed and KI is not the same without it.
I know i really miss this ride. Gemini is still a very popular and beloved ride at Cedar Point, especially for me personally because it was the first coaster i ever rode. Both Gemini and Blue Streak are good beginner rides and with their other stuff i dont see the park ever getting rid of them.
The company that built Vortex, Arrow Dynamics, went defunct in 2002, so service and parts were hard to come by. I believe the ride went beyond its service life. I remember riding this before they took it down, it was extremely rough and uncomfortable, it had to go unfortunately.
The ride was sinking. For safety purposes, it had to go. Oh well, there is plenty of space where this was. Hopefully Cedar Fairs/Six Flags will put something badass in.
I didn’t realize it was sinking. Probably a good call then. Hope they can reinforce the foundation and put in something great. My thought would be a have a single rail RMC with a similar Vortex layout. That would be fantastic!
I finally decided to man up after 20 years of living to go to Kings island and ride all the rides, only got to ride it once but it was so fun. Sad to see it go :(
It was really rough! Definitely got a headache after riding because I was the perfect height to bang my head on the restraints, but it definitely had it’s issues of its own, growing up vortex was always broken down or people getting stuck on the ride, and sometimes the restraints coming up and the clip being the only thing keeping it from flying up. But even with the issues, I miss it and wish they would do a ride with the similar lay out or something to fill the spot where it used to sit. Sorry you couldn’t get to experience it
The que line was even cool, it was like the OG ones were instead of being on top of each other like modern que lines are, it was like one giant line and you had to walk up stairs to get to the loading station.
This was one of THE BEST ROLLERCOASTERS EVER! I've riden it hundreds of times in my childhood. 2 double loops and 2 corkscrews back to back thing was ahead of it's time!
Yeah 1st time on the vortex my shoulder bar came up in the 1st loop, needless to say,o turned around and got right back in line again.Loved this coaster!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this video. For health reasons, right now, I can’t ride big roller coasters like this, even though my daughters love them. We just got back from Kings Island, and my oldest wanted to know what my favorite coasters used to be. Goodness me is that first turn literally just sitting on the ground? Major mistake on arrow's part, should the ground beneath that track section erode that stretch of track could fall apart
Never rode vortex but i got a head ache just watching that. Don't get me wrong I love Arrow coasters and all the pain that comes along with it. Rode Drachen Fire in its debut season and it beat the crap out of my head and I loved every second of it. It is sad to see them going the way of the dinosaur. Lots of history.
First non-kiddie steel roller coaster I've ever ridden on. Yes, it's a little bumpy, but idc I love this thing. Also I heard they just got better seats for it so it isn't as painful. Not sure if that's true, I haven't been to KI yet this season but I will be going for my birthday in June!
It wasn't a rough ride when it opened. It's gotten worse over the decades, but I would never go back if/when they take it out. It's still one of the main reasons I've gone to KI.
so a bigger/extended version of viper at magic mountain? makes me think viper will be closing shortly now too...you can tell by the popularity of the ride, there is no wait..photo booth is closed...time is near closing.
Arrow definitely kept "Phantom" (pre-Phantom's Revenge) in mind when they designed this one. The beginning has the same unique awesomeness except it still has all the great inversions. I remember riding the original "Bat" before it was razed and Vortex replaced it. It was smooth back then. The last time I rode it was painfully rough. Why do coasters get rough with age?

This ride looks really fun I wish I could have gotten a chance to ride it.. i've ridden Viper at Darien lake countless times as it is the closest major amusement park to me. Viper open 5 years earlier and held the record for most inversions (5) on a coaster until this opened in 1987... Watching this video I see a lot of similar elements to Viper, I guess this was a common cookie-cutter technique that Arrow used, it's almost like an upgraded version of viper with the elements rearranged, really cool to see!
Grew up there, worked there! My favs The Beast, Twin Racers (backwards), then the Vortex. Got to ride Firehawk....oooooo weeeeee❤️❤️❤️ One of THE BEST amusement parks Everrrrrrr. Been to many!
RIP Vortex. Sucks seeing arrow loopers get torn down

When I first got on this ride I was scared to death. Now I love it. But I'm scared if heights too, I love riding rollercoasters.
Grew up there, worked there! My favs The Beast, Twin Racers (backwards), then the Vortex. Got to ride Firehawk....oooooo weeeeee❤️❤️❤️ One of THE BEST amusement parks Everrrrrrr. Been to many!
