I think it’s the right decision, Daniel Hibberts techniques produce amazing results. Looking forward to watching its progress

I would overseed it now you've recently scarified it and loosened the soil and then drop some topsoil on to keep the seed moist and that will look lovely without doing anything too drastic. It will even the colour of the lawn out.
Great to see the cylinder mower started on the second go even though you haven't used it for weeks.

I’m still in 2 minds about killing it all off, I did the overseeding last year in the hope of helping the situation with the weed grasses however there seems to be even more this year. I did the no mow may this year on the back lawn and I don’t think that has helped.

It just might be worth trying the easiest route first because that's the way most would tackle the problem because of the time involved and if it fails move on to the bigger job. I think it would be more interesting for the majority of viewers who would try the potentially easy option first.

Good point, I suppose as well if I end up with bare patches after a full renovation time is short for filling in the bare spots, last couple of years autumn has ended up being cool and wet. Thanks for the comment I will take your suggestions on board before making my final decision 👍

A full renovation seems excessive if don’t want a bowling green and you will still have dogs after. What have you been treating it with?
Won’t an over-seed, topdressing and then aftercare do the job for you?

If killing off I suggest at least a couple applications of herbicide. Even then expect you'll still get poa annua coming through. If putting a fine grass seed it might be easier to spot the PA and you can start hand picking. Killed my lawn off two successive autumns trying to kill PA. It appears PA seeds can last in ground for a long time and preparing seed bed just brings them to the surface. So for me it still takes raking to lift PA, close cutting, to collect seed heads. I then hand pick on very regular basis. Using a small amount of herbicide and small (artist) paint brush I even spot painted any PA plants I could see. After a week to 10 days then had many dead patches which I filled with top dressing and seed. PA still coming through, but much reduced to the point where I struggle to find it. So after much hard work I have seen much improvement and hopefully broken the cycle. After much rambling my message is killing the lawn won't provide the full answer due to dormant seed in ground but it's a start. Go for it and good luck.

Thanks for the comment Andy, I totally agree with you so my plan is kill it all off. Put down Johnson’s seed, a blend of dwarf rye and bent grass seeds(dog patch resistant) upgrade my cylinder mower and purchase a verti cutting cassette. I killed off my front lawn last year for the same reason and it’s not to bad this year still get some but it’s manageable.

If I were you I’d just do a proper renovation, scalp it, scarify it thoroughly as it still has a fair bit of moss and thatch, overseed with some decent seed like pm51 or pm52, starter fert and topdress it.
The green (unburnt) patches where the dog has visited indicate the rest of the lawn would tolerate a fairly heavy feed.
Killing ones lawn to rid it of weed grass is not as easy as you’d think and it has to be completely baron for weeks while you kill it over and over to ensure all the roots are dead otherwise it’ll be back and you’ll have wasted your time.
If you do kill it it’s best to hire a turf cutter and take the top off, skip it then kill what’s underneath for several weeks before putting a new layer of soil to seed the new lawn into.
Also I’d consider rotary cutting first before getting the allett out when the grass is as it was ✌️
