      Shame on anyone not killing a rattlesnake. You kill them to keep thier population down. Otherwise your town will become over run with poisonous snakes. Growing up in tioga Pennsylvania we had a rattlesnake round up every year. Everyone pitches in and kills as many rattlesnakes as possible for a day. If you dont they will be all over the place. You have to do it every year too. Rattlesnakes are dangerous if you dont kill them they will breed and breed. They will be all over the playgrounds in store parking lots . They will be in the fields biting horses and cows. Trust me the rattlesnake population needs people to kill them our the population will explode.

    Your boys accents, sound close to mine...lol The biggest Timber Rattlesnake I've ever seen here in Boyd Co., North Eastern Kentucky was when I was trail riding with a friend in Rush KY, the front of the pack of a 4 or 5 of railbuggys had come to a stop in front of us, we got out of our harnesses and out of the buggy, to see a rattlesnake so long its head and rattlers were on each side of the trail, and I'm not talking a rough ATV trail, I'm talking you can run a stock truck down this trail ....big snake! That was around 1998, so selfies, and smart phones hadn't been invented, so I don't know if anyone got pics ....one of the first ran over it, with bead locked , carved, low inflated wide tires, and I guess it killed it.....right then....I dont know what them boys did with that....I would have took it to the taxidermist...if I was into snakes, or for historical for the area......

      First off, I did not catch it. I saw it first but my friend caught it and I held it and tubed it. It was up to him to tag it since I technically did not catch it. Plus, it had a bit of scale rot and if we wanted to preserve the hide it would have some scars which wouldnt look nice. Big snake but there are others out there. We dont plan to tag out each season. If we find the right one we are looking for we will use our tag. Its a management preference we put on ourselves.

      there are multiple things we can do if we tag one. We can keep it as a pet. Keep it for awhile then release it at a later time. Keep it for skin and meat. or keep it for a taxidermy mount. Most likely we would have kept for skin and meat

      I would prefer not to kill a snake just to prevent scale rot. A snake that big has lived for close to 20 years or more possibly and will travel a great distance to mate and help make more snakes. Plus, its a wide spread disease and even if every snake hunter out there tagged a scale rot snake it wouldnt really do anything. I hope to have a chanterelle video up but time is against me. We will see.

      scale rot is a fungus that affects reptiles and adheres to the scales of the snake. They are rather strong but it more of trying to get them to go straight is the hard part. they show their strength when you pick them up and try to get out. you have to have a good hold on the tube and snake.

    What is the decline of the Timber Rattlesnake since 1960 in Pennsylvania . In the UK our only poisonous snake the adder has declined by at least 90 percent since 1960. It's good that you are still finding large snakes. Thats a good indication at least in that area the Timber is doing very well. Please protect these sites.

    • @ralphlewis539
      @ralphlewis539 5 років тому

      They're declining in numbers in virtually every state they live in. State govts generally react too late when things really start to get worse. That's what happened in New England. They're nearly gone in NH and VT, heavily influenced of the hunting of just one man (Rudy Komarek). Don't think one or two snakes matter? Yeah, that's what they thought up here in the 50's and 60's.
      By the time laws were passed to protect the snakes it was too late. It takes nearly a decade for these snakes to reach sexual maturity in the northeast, and a female might breed 2 or 3 times in her life. So killing adults is a BIG deal no matter what state Fish & Game depts say. My vote is that sensible people will take it upon themselves NOT to kill these snakes even if it's legal. Hunt deer, turkey, and other game instead. There's actually a good meat yield and the animals' reproductive rates can sustain indefinite hunting.

    Those would make a nice pair of boots & belt ;) Basically same mountain chain here in KY as you're on in Penn. although i've seen some a bit more girth & length here,but i don't get it as to why.. It's same type terrain just further north.. the funny thing is i'm from a place called Leatherwood..what are the chances rite,.. lol... Happy hunting fellas, be safe..

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors  6 років тому +1

    • @blkicemike4857
      @blkicemike4857 6 років тому +2

      Well.. yep,. that's what i was tryna say, when i stated that we have same terrain only difference is that you're further North than I am. I have read that sometimes elevation can contribute a whole lot to those factors. then again i'm no scientist, just an ol'country boy that luvs & enjoys the outdoors and also i'm guessing that elevation is very similar for our states. The bordering state of Tennessee has some really big rattlers. also have bigger mountains, could that make a difference?The biggest rattler i've caught here; lil over 6ft. and Tenn. seen 8-10ft massive snakes!! I know where several dens are located, one den in mind is under a huge boulder at edge of outcrop and i tell ya i have been standing on it while a few acquaintances were catching: dude the rock felt like it was vibrating due to so many snakes singing. That same place i have witnessed 200 timber,pigmy, (can't recall name of other type) being caught in one time. Not counting all the ones that managed to flee/escape. There are several diff escape routes for them to use at that location. It's amazing to set back and watch weeds part in all directions. As u mentioned; they will attempt to flee instead of persuing someone to attack. So many ppl misunderstand them & are afraid resulting in pointless slaughtering. We use to do snake round ups just to see what was in the dens in particular areas,.. However no foolish/pointless killing ever taken place. Some were kept & sold to a couple area churches that do the snake handling ( i don't agree with but pays well,and money can be scarce in these parts sometimes. NO JOBS!! locally,.. well unless u wanna move to bigger cities like Lexington,KY,.. or Knoxville, Tenn. Small towns are a dying breed unfortunately, as i'm sure you're already aware of this. I'm country thru & thru, so i don't think i'm moving anytime soon. i hate the city! People are Asshoes! i'd much rather take my chances w/ ornery bear, or rattler. lol.. sorry for rambling on so much..

    I know you guys hunt up north a lot, but that sure reminds me of some of the mts in central PA. I hunt a Wild area, where they are protected, can't even hunt or handle them there. it's really snaky. I've seen more there than anywhere.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors  6 років тому

      I got into this around 2006 I think. The year before a friend of mine and his uncle were driving around and saw two snakes by the road. he told us if we got permits he would take us to camp and we would go hunt for them. So we jumped on the chance and got the gear to go and thats how it all started.

      Cool,so if you were a hiker oblivious that the snakes were around are they aggressive or do you get plenty of warning before they strike?
      I live out west at 8k feet and don't worry about snakes at all but if I lived there i'd probably get bit.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors  6 років тому

      not really. they are not aggressive at all. No one has even gotten a random boot strike by one. The only time we get a boot strike is when we are messing with the snakes. I have talked to lots of hikers and they see them and hear them alot. Lots of warning. Most of the people who get bit are people who mess with the snakes.
