Yep! Their is just something about that album the songwriting the vibe the rawness the subtle melodic brilliance the lofi atmosphere it's definitely my favorite from the whole catalog although every album of his is genius and a favorite of mine roman candle is special
Roman candle and his self titled record are absolutely insane. I haven’t heard anything quite as raw as his early stuff. and don’t even get me STARTED on his songwriting. Truly one of the best writers ever, and gone too soon man. There’ll never be another smith
tune your guitar to D-A-D-G-B-D first of all, and then play the following shapes as you would in standard: b minor 7th for the first chord, c sharp 7 for the second, then get a G power-chord by barring the E and A sterings at fret 5, and the last chord in the verse progression is an A7. chorus is the same chords but with a D and E minor thrown in there. good luck figuring out the picking pattern - you have to strum with your...
I fee for him, his song structures are so intricate and lyrics deep, personal, and verbose. These songs are very challenging to realize, let alone drunk, high, and depressed.
Truth! And I'm just now discovering it. I've been a fan since the late 90's and loved his studio albums and what I knew of him from magazines, but watching these live shows are unlocking a whole new level of Elliott fandom for me.
Actually, it isn't a flute - it's just an electric guitar with the fuzz and the treble turned way down so that it has a warm and subdued/mysterious sound. Cheers!
there are so many great artists all of us have missed out on… elliott was sadly on of them for me. im hoping in another life, I had seen him play. maybe my love for music started with a different life, seeing some of the musicians play then that I love in this life now. or maybe not lol. either way I’ll never forget Elliott and the countless others I’ve begin to love through their music.
i love watching his hands in the low light. this was taken in the year after his self titled, which was a radical monument of self acceptance. a precious time capsule before the heat lamp of fame burned him out
Is it fucked up that it makes me happy he went out like a Roman Candle instead of getting fat and fading away like the rest of us. He was too great for that and now he’ll live forever young and free.
The only "living" he will be doing forever young and free is in our minds. He died, and that actually sucks. I'd much prefer he got fat like the rest of us and kept writing songs and making records and performing, like he wanted to do.
...index/middle fingers on the higher straings and do an alternating picking pattern on the bass strings! but hopefully the chords/tuning will give you a starting point. i'm thinking about making a tutorial video for this song at some point, so subscribe! good luck
Nirvana's cool. But Elliott has better musicianship and songwriting than Kurt but there are like if you had 2 brothers, if both are good for different reasons you got to love them. I agree that Elliott needs more respect and notice.
They are needed in Heaven to play and sing at their fullest and best more than they are needed on Earth...but the treasures they left us, man...I'm so thankful.
@thefortress12 sarcasm, how does it work? look it up in a dictionary. its obvious theres no trombone in kiwi maddog, just like its obvious that there isnt a flute in roman candle... to anyone that has ears which work.

Gonna go out on a limb and say Roman Candle is my favorite Elliott Smith album. The song writing is just too good and raw
same here. They are all so great but the rawness and shear emotion in Roman candle is just so brilliant its stupid. (in a good way)
Yep! Their is just something about that album the songwriting the vibe the rawness the subtle melodic brilliance the lofi atmosphere it's definitely my favorite from the whole catalog although every album of his is genius and a favorite of mine roman candle is special
I love Roman Candle too it doesn’t get the attention it deserves

@@giovannilp03 I agree completely man 👌🏻
Even the low quality of audio can't hide his talent
definetly an acoustic rock star, deserves as much respect as nirvana.
Such an odd comparison to make but yea I agree
You're not a real Nirvana fan if you aren't a Buddhist
@@ijemand5672wrong.
@@cardrop33you dont get it
@@Dhdhdyqha i get it, and what they’re saying is wrong.
He was just unbelievable. It always sounds to me like there are two of him - two voices singing together.
man the things id go see with a time machine
Same ..
Even Elliott's false starts/fuck-ups are endearing LOL.
Awesome performance of a haunting song. RIP Elliott - you are missed.
sounds just like the album. amazing
The beginning was so textbook Elliott lol

Fucks up and jumps RIGHT back in....
amazing
man there is an amazing amount of footage of Elliott's concerts
Truth! And I'm just now discovering it. I've been a fan since the late 90's and loved his studio albums and what I knew of him from magazines, but watching these live shows are unlocking a whole new level of Elliott fandom for me.
Makes me feel in heaven and hell at the same time . Happy and sad.
haunting, still a classic
Good will haunting
I can imagine this being fucking difficult to perform live.
not for him
for everyone else yes
Elliot you saved my life
YES! It was incredible. You can hear it here on this live recording which proves it.
Te amo Elliott
This is some dark.... stuff....
And I love it
Actually, it isn't a flute - it's just an electric guitar with the fuzz and the treble turned way down so that it has a warm and subdued/mysterious sound.
Cheers!
i wish you could see his face and his emotions. there are hardly any live videos of this songs
i've never seen anyone play this song like elliott. the one of the most beautiful songs ever.
absolutely stunning
best album i agree.
the no names

This is beyond comprehension
Phenomenal work, one of a kind
this is so beautiful
Cute! I love you Elliott.
Kind of love this video quality, makes him seem like an obscured face
My love
so haunting

i love this song so much. and just learnt it off mark1800 a few comments below. thanks mark! =)
I don't think I've ever noticed that flute melody...I'll check out the album version again. Thanks for mentioning it, I guess.
at 2:48 he tunes his E string from D to C in the middle of strumming.
How on Earth did he do that?
he does that in the studio recording, but i think here he maybe just plays the C on 3rd fret A string instead
I don’t appreciate the laughs, but I do appreciate the video! Thank you ahah
so fucking amazing
hahaha, typical Elliott. It is a really hard song to play anyways. Great song too.
Thanks for posting it.
I never could figure out how he got this sound on this song
hahha i need to drink ,,, more beer elliott was a rare delicate creature that everybody let go of

not many would be in this quality, but great vid. thanks
thanks for the post.. awesome!
Mastermind musical genious.
love you you elliott
xo
he's using his thumb to slap the strings against the fretboard whilst flicking the higher strings
no... you can hear the strings...
elliott was so amazing...:[
Thanks, pretty rare him perfoming this one live..?
fantastick,
love.....
Yup
el hombre de la silueta
imo as well, though not in so much detail haha.
But yeah, it is an eargasmic sound.
how could someone so talented be so sad
the flute melody? lol, yea and i love the trombone work in kiwi maddog 20/20.
2:20
nice
why do the good ones die young while the bad ones keep living?
They are needed in Heaven to play and sing at their fullest and best more than they are needed on Earth...but the treasures they left us, man...I'm so thankful.
+fuckedwithanailgun elliott didnt believe that though
Cool. I'm not Elliott, man.
fuckedwithanailgun just making a pointless point
Nothing wrong with that.
ps. does anyone know the tuning for this?
It's gotta have some kinda downtuning on the higher strings to get that jangling thing going though.... hrrrm. I must figure it out
@arexthetrex way more respect then nirvana
@thefortress12 sarcasm, how does it work? look it up in a dictionary. its obvious theres no trombone in kiwi maddog, just like its obvious that there isnt a flute in roman candle... to anyone that has ears which work.
@Flipperdoodles ...ow?
how the hell he did it?
00:53
pa pa pam
I think its a drop D.
its a fast pace strumming style and he almost wacks the low e string most of the time. its a weird e styled tuning also
Devon St. Jules this one is just double drop D not that weird
darkest hour? dude, he had some pretty dark hours...
Well I just listened to it again...doesn't sound like a flute to me =S
Sounds more electric...
and at the same time one piece
did u move on from me/him the worlds fucked he knew I love you so much
@thewarfiles That song kill sucks to me. I don't see how someone listening to that crap would be listening to elliott.
@thefortress12 sarcasm, how does it work? look it up in a dictionary. its obvious theres no trombone in kiwi maddog, just like its obvious that there isnt a flute in roman candle... to anyone that has ears which work.
