“If you only have a little bit of free time you have to make the most of it. If you have a lot of it you’re kind of wondering what to do with it.” So very true.
Is it weird to miss someone you never met and never could have had a chance of getting to know? It must be strange for his friends and family to see such adoration from fans. But this man and his work significantly affected my life. All we have are these clips now, and that's the only side of him I have ever known. But his words and music have been in my head half my life now. I don't know. I wish things had been so so different.
You can bet his friends and family wish things had been different, too. He deserved so much better than the pain he felt that drove him to abuse drugs and alcohol. While I know he was more than just a depressed sad sack, there's no doubt that he suffered a lot, especially toward the end if we're to believe his girlfriend and what she's said about her time with him. Abusing his prescription meds destroyed his brain, and he knew that. I wish he had found a better way to deal with his emotional problems.
I feel this. I have periodically grieved for him over the years like he was a dead friend or companion. I feel like I know him deeply from his music and photos. He was one of a kind 🩵
It's crazy all the material this man left behind . Everytime I think I've seen it all, nope.. there's a new one. .. Miss you ,Elliott.. Merry Xmas to everyone... Have a blessed and safe one.

Wow. And here I was thinking that every Elliott Smith interview out there has already been uploaded on youtube before. Apperantly I was wrong. So thankful for this, Seriously.
I swear near everyday I mourn the fact that I can never see him live, but I realise now that perhaps a small reason I love him so much is because he's dead: nothing unpredictable to throw me off or loose touch with his oeuvre. Every part of him I've been exposed to I've loved with all my heart. He's perfect, and that can never change. This interview is such a godsend.
What do you love, his music or his persona? I don't care for his music much, but he seemed like the sweetest, most gentle, compassionate, humble person. I wish he were still alive just so he could still be enjoying the beautiful things in life and his friends and family could still be making happy, or fun, or hilarious memories with him.
Hmmm, I would say someone like Noel Ghallagher from Oasis was far better as an artist who had a very prolific sound of his own which was all down to his specific chords, can't really argue seeing as he used the blue print set by the beatles.
@@jackgreenway4646 I grew up playing songs by Elliot Smith and Oasis. The difference is Elliot's song structures often sound simple on the surface, like Gallagher's, but when you delve into them or try to learn them, you realise they are far more complicated to play than they sound. Meanwhile, Noel's songs are still just basic intuitive open chord progressions that any beginner can play.

less than half a year before he would start using big time in 2001. Those shows from late 2000 however can't be beat. Top form in everything! Very glad to see this interview in great quality finally.
@endlessnameless6494which breakup are you referring to? The one with the supposed love of his life Joanna Bolme? The one with Valerie Deerin, which happened right before he decided to get clean from drugs, or the one with his last girlfriend Jennifer Chiba (there was no breakup between them as far as any of us know)?
Elliott Smith has been my favourite solo artist since I first heard him on the radio in 1998..I became obsessed. When he died..I felt like a part of me had died too. I still don't think I've really recovered.
I was lucky enough to see Elliott on this tour. It was at the Filmore in SF. I was actually surprised at how amazing he sounded and how well he played considering I think he was in a pretty intense downward spiral at this point. This footage looks like it could be from that show tbh.
I was really into the label Kill Rock Stars and they would include a mail catalog in all their releases. This is where I discovered Elliott Smith. The first album I bought was either/or. From the opening of speed trials I knew I’d found a special artist. He wrote lyrics that spoke to me and his guitar playing was just outstanding. The world lost a beautiful soul when Elliott passed away. They’re have been some decent singer/songwriters to come along, but no one of the caliber of Elliott Smith.
most of us who have been fans of Elliott for 20+ years are now older than he was when he passed away. It feels strange, as I will always perceive him as older and wiser than I am.
Thank you!! I see this as a Xmas present lol,, never saw this one.. I love the bit about having a real job,, that's kinda where I'm at too,, I do construction type stuff and day dream hah

For real. It's such a gift to find an interview from him I've never seen.
100%. What a star we had in our generation(s).

Elliot Smith was an amazing artist and down to earth individual. He is sorely missed. 😢 😢
Always nice to find a interview i havent seen before, thanks :)
cool to see him quoting spinal tap
He could have written the song “Lick My Love Pump” and it would have been beautiful.
The one consistency I hold dear in my life is my love for Elliott Smith.
The saddest situation I can think of in art is losing him. He was the shit. Locked in.
so true. unmatched
Agreed. I’d add Blaze Foley to the list of lost too soon.
It's always sad when a great artist dies and takes all their potential future creations with them.
"he was the shit locked in" sounds like constipation. I guess im old now, struggling to understand the new slangs.
