Before someone writes an essay about how the headlamp isn't that amazing compared to other brands 😂. Well, I live out on a farm and 280m spot beam with 100 CRI flood (Edit: 98 CRI from Zeroair), plus a bright red where I can see very well to 20-25m is amazing. Love the rotary switch saving my selected brightness, no more 2x, 3x clicking to switch modes and change brightness, just set your brightness and then rotate the head to your desired mode. Brilliant.
@AverageReviewsYT well, that was my measurement. Zeroair has pro gear and measured 98 CRI...mine's close enough I reckon, probably should have checked zeroair first, but that's my reading.
Sorry, I just didn't want to get on your nerves with the comparison to the HD50. I wanna say thank your for your Review. I'm still interested in the fact that you see the HS21 as an advantage. Are the runtimes of a 18650 flashlight really better than those of a 21700 flashlight? Do you have a review video for that?
Good to see Sofirn finally using a fully regulated driver (pardon my ignorance if they've used it in older lights). Thanks for the video. This light caught my eye. I don't need another headlamp but your review just might push me to get it.

I replaced the HS42 with it at work. I like the fact i can switch fast between flood and throw but i dont like the on off button, its too small to be easy found with work gloves. Not a big deal, ill probably get used with it in a few days (today was the 1st). Considering the price, its very good.
1:05 I ran all those tests in the comparison graph for this video, so people won't say "the HD50 is the brightest" from my comparison photo, when in actual fact it has the worst sustained output.
I still love my Sofirn SP40 after 4 years of daily use in all weathers! This is very tempting though - I might have to retire the old girl. The quality to price ratio is pretty amazing, it's never failed me and has zero annoying quirks, it just works every time, even the strap feels like new still.
The SP40 was not a good headlamp. It had no temperature control, it got extremely hot in turbo mode. The brightness decreased in proportion to the battery drain, the optics were overfocused. I see that the manufacturer has improved a lot since then, because everyone praises the HS21.
@@orbinyek mine is the older non-TRI version, it doesn't get hot and maintains a decent brightness for a 45 min dog walk, and is very reliable. For the price they're damn good IMO
I see your rants in the comments, and I have to agree with the buck driver, and usefulness of the light. In flashlights, I’m ok with hot rodding for 30 seconds then a drop (assuming it’s a high output impressive monster) or extreme throw… with headlamps it’s a different game.. I want sustainability, and a (at least) mostly floody beam.. it’s a headlamp.. not a search light.. you should be carrying that.. it’s for up close hands filled tasks.. the rotary switch is just flat out amazing and again I’m not sure about the 100cri.. but wow if it is lol… the fact it’s a spot or/and flood beam is perfect.. it fills everyone’s craving… the only question I have is, does it have a auto lockout?
@@AverageReviewsYT no to auto lockout, just 2x clicks from off. That's my error on the CRI, it's the reading on my Opple Light Master Pro, but Zeroair shows 98 on pro gear, so that's still excellent. Thanks for the earlier comment, didn't actually realise LEDs weren't able to produce 100 CRI yet. I just posted that rant because I was sure someone would disagree it's the "best". Best for my needs I should say.
@@AverageReviewsYTYou can use this even on low setting with spot+flood and walk around in the woods in complete darkness. It's very bright on low settings so battery life is great if you manage it properly. It's amazing light. It's a blind buy for anyone who needs a headlamp. You won't look for another after using this one.I particularly like the 5K flood light. Very useful when you need more colour accuracy for reading maps, finding plants etc. And when you need the thrower you have the spot at 6K. That combination is brilliant.
I got mine like a week ago an yes, is awesome, if i all ready have a fantastic flood light I would want more throw on the spot like sft25r or cslnm1, I personally do need it, but overall is the one of the best ones right now
Super review! Thanks for focusing on what’s important. Sounds like a terrific tool, perfect for my needs. I ordered it. Did yours ship with a battery recommendation? The PDF version of the manual is silent on which type of 18650 it needs.
And those runtimes are with a pretty low capacity 18650. Do you know the tailcap amps during sustained output? Would be interesting to find out which 18650 actually has the longest runtimes in this headlamp
When you mention that the driver is fully regulated, what do you mean? Do you think the improvement compared to the Boruit D10 will be worth it? I have that flashlight, and now I've bought this HS21 for €26, so I'm eager to see the improvement. Thanks!
@@PrimalShutter easy enough to open it up and reflow in another 5050 emitter or get someone to do it. SFT40 doesn't come in 4500K, so 5000K or a different emitter entirely.
there was some minor problem about this model? something about parasitic drain when exposed to light. i've read this on the budgetlightforum, what do you think about it?
Over exaggeration. I tested it and no ambient light is bright enough to be a concern. The member on BLF said it could be as high as 1mA in direct sunlight, but it's never a good idea to store any flashlight in direct sunlight, even then the sensor would need to be pointing directly at the sun as well. Standard Room Lighting: 270 lux = 0.03mA drain. That's nothing.
@@PiercingTheDarkness another question if i may, could you think i can make it waterproof by sealing the chargingport (with idk epoxy or stuff) and opt for external battery charging? or should i consider the ip68 hs20 instead
Which brand and model do you recommend as a pocket/jacket thrower with SFT40? I really like the size of convoy s21e. Could you help to find good compact 21700 thrower?
My go too pocket thrower has been a sofirn if22a for around 3 years, which i got 2 of from jacob. Unsure what differences if any the newer ones have, but great small torches, with excellent throw. Search his channel for reviews and comparisons.
@@tester776 both are great options depending on your needs. If you want a dedicated headlamp, then the HS21 is best, but if you want to make use of it as a flashlight with magnetic tail, the HS42 is an excellent option.

Hi, I would suggest looking at the 1Lumen reviews for both of those LEPs since I don't own the T30R. I personally have no interest reviewing Mateminco models since the majority use unregulated drivers. They have a high output turbo, but the sustained brightness afterwards is terrible. I'd personally just wait for an upcoming Convoy model using the new SFT25-R or the L21B using the CULPM1 for 1300m
