I hate being that person, but this is actually based on a manga of the same name by Osamu Tezuka. He claimed he never watched the film, but did gather inspiration from it while making the manga (mainly just a still shot of the scene of the Maschinenmensch being constructed) However, apparently a lot of plot elements from the 1927 film are present in the movie compared to the manga, so you’re not entirely off. It’s a fun coincidence though that they happened to be named the same
@@demi_shin Yeah I don't buy that he didn't at least watch the movie once, theres too much in similarities a humanoid robot who eventually brings about the destruction of a city, from what I saw there are differences but theres also a lot of similarities including the name. Remember watching this as a child. That last part , the tragic destruction , the lost love and that Ray Charles music were all engraved in my memory and left me with a deep yearning for something I do not know
It's not just the visuals that make this a great climax, but also the combination of a song that at first you think would feel really out of place with what's going on and yet somehow, it really works!
+eclipsesonic if i remember well , this music also goes with the sacrifice of the girl , a huge proove of the strenght of love and it s smt fantastic , like the song ...
When it goes silent and the music just comes up... It's... I've never felt that, it's so sad. When I was a boy I was heartbroken. Now I'm 30 years old and this still breaks me.
At first I had that exact same feeling but now after watching the film a bunch of times I couldn’t imagine any other song playing. The song is also thematically rich as it can be applied to Rock’s relationship with Duke Red, as well as Kenichi losing Tima
There is nothing I love more then reading the comments of all the other people who stumbled on this and instantly were like "holy shit I remember this". I saw this forever ago and thought it was like a dream or something l, crazy how some stuff just stick with you.
All I remembered of this movie was the ending and the part leading up to it, the song instantly resonated itself the moment I heard it. I was like THAT'S THE MOVIE I WATCHED ONE NIGHT AT MY GRANDMA'S ON ADULT SWIM MOVIE NIGHT!
they thought this was a dream because they watch it when they're small... this movie came up.. I'm already 17 years old.. but i still. remember movie like krull just like a dream..
thats the thing about true art. saw this movie only once when i was no more than 10 on new years eve and i never forgot it. i really felt for the characters.
I don't even remember it. The last time i remember seeing it was in 2007 when i was about 3 or 4 but was the ending something like an old man told him "she was a robot and it was bound to happen she can't love you" or something?? That's one of the only parts was is still engraved into my mind
I watched this back when I was still a kid in cartoon network. The bittersweet ending really stuck with me. I fell in love with the characters and the song elevated the ending making me remember the song up until adulthood.
I watched this scene over and over today. I used to love this movie as a kid. Now as an adult I realize why this scene is so powerful. It truly conveys what it’s like to lose someone you love. If you’ve ever been there when someone you love dies you understand. There’s so much gravity of what’s happening and you see them beyond coming back but there’s still a flicker of all the happiness of what once was. And then they slip away. Pure tragedy

I know the song was probably chosen primarily for Tima’s feelings about Kenichi, but I can’t help but also feel a pang of sympathy for Rock and his adoration of his father. Rock loves his father so deeply that he’d rather bring the Ziggurat down and kill them all than suffer the indignity of his father being killed by rebellious robots. His refusal to let Tima rule is born not only of jealousy but because he believes his father is the only person great enough to rule. Despite the fact that his father loathes him, Rock still “can’t stop loving” him, as the song goes. It’s really tragic. What a wonderful film.
The shootout scene was the most tragic part for me. Seeing both of Duke Red's 'children' get shot, yet realizing he only cared about Tima, was heartbreaking. And despite all of that, Rock still loved him.
That picture of the shop named after her, with Kenichi running it, is from the booklet in a soundtrack released only in Japan. It was never actually in the credits.
This animation is absolutely phenomenal! The backgrounds have a very early 2000s Disney vibe to them while the characters feel more Astro-Boy inspired.

Oh my God, this fucking scene is sooooo heart wrenching. I remember watching this while I was twelve and being bummed out that Tima was probably going to die, but the fact that her memory started to come back to her as she plunged to her death made me hate life. Oh my God, I was so goddamn sad.

I've been trying to remember what this anime was called for YEARS, and suddenly the ending appears in my recommended section? Praise be the UA-cam gods, and praise be the wonderful person who posted this video!
I randomly remembered it at the back of my head one day and decided to watch it again. I guess this movie must have been underrated if so many people forgot about it even though it was so good.
Dude, I remember this movie ! 0.0 I was probably like 10 or something like that and i was sitting in the couch, early in the morning and looking though the channels to find something to watch and I stumbled over this. It was at the end and this scene stayed with me for such a long time, I was obsessed trying to find the actual film XD I even remembered Tima saying ,,Who am I ?" !
I exactly this same!!! I was looking for that film a long time...For the few years. And had already an obsession . The only thing I remembered were words:" Who I am"..And now...just woow...I found it..but seemed to me that I looked a bit different..little like Disney's cartoons..or something like that..thx..
+Sebastian Martinez I'm the same haha :D, it was on either UK channel 4 or 5 at like 2 in the morning. Canny strange that so many people have found this clip based on seeing it one time years ago without even knowing it's name.
+Sebastian Martinez Yeah. It's one of those great lost titles. I'm 22 and I just found it last year, but damn it was hard to find. Wow, though, such a great film.
The first time I saw this movie was when I was 6 years old in the very early 2000. It was quite a trippy experience, I remember I was left shaken for the rest of day after seeing that final scene.
Had this on DVD when it was released but I long lost it. Man oh man this ending still hits hard. The timing for this sequence is what does it for me. Absolutely Perfect! People may give it crap for the CG that was used but..dude...This is still a classic in my Opinion. Still gets me teary.
This scene will stay with me for a really long time. This is probably the single most painful scene for me to watch. Good job, Madhouse. You really got me with this one.
I was finally allowed by my parents to see this movie, last year. The ending had me crying so much...this film is truly a work of beautiful genius...such strong emotion and the artwork is stunning. Thank you Rintaro for this masterpiece!
I remember watching this really late at night on Cartoon Network, but I've always thought it was a dream. Glad to see many others with the same nostalgia.
Haruko Haruhara in the end Kenichi rebuit Tima and together they run a robot repair shop. The director took out a picture of this from the end but you can still google it and find the picture :D
First time I watched this movie, soon as the song started I just applauded and began tearing up. Such a perfect song to use, it fit like a glove and now whenever I hear the song it reminds me of this scene.
For more than 10 years, this movie still affects me so much. Specially when Tima remembers, but there are certainly some other moments during this part, which are really strong.
You have no idea how excited I was when I finally learned the name of this movie. I have vague memories of seeing it for the first time on Cartoon Network back in 2006 - 2007. Then I saw it again on CineMAX right in this scene, but I changed the channel because I was scared by how Tima moves her fingers and chokes Kenichi, only to put it back right in the final shot with the radio. It wasn't until I was in high school that I finally found out what it was called thanks to UA-cam, and since then it's been my favorite anime movie of all time. I love the story, the animation, the music, the characters, and I especially love the relationship between Tima and Kenichi, and discovering the photo of the post-credits scene filled me with joy for the two of them. Years later I was finally able to read Tezuka's manga and realize how different they are, but I don't care. I love this movie with all my soul.
Oh man, how did I forget about this film? It came out when I started high school and I was OBSESSED with it. I love the core of the story between Kenichi and Tima for the same reasons I love Let The Right One In/Let Me In. It's a great story about young love and the fact that it's an epic Sci-Fi film is just icing on the cake. I was so engrossed by this film that I spent that entire school year creating my own version of the film in comic form. Wish I still had that notebook. Anyway, glad I rediscovered this classic.
Remember watching this on hbo late at night after waking up . And I always thought it was a dream, every once in awhile it always come backs to me out of nowhere
Liber Amans . . . Because Disney distributed most of their films in america so a huge portion of their american fanbase ain't really anime fans and aren't aware that it's not the only animation studio in japan?
Remember watching this on cartoon network about 14 or so years ago when I was 7 or 8. This scene and film aways had some sort of effect on me and to see it again now is surreal.
All these years I thought Tima was gone only to find out that there is an epilogue picture showing her to be rebuilt and running a robot shop alongside Kenchi. I was finally happy. I mean, it's a bit silly to feel for an artificial being in a fictional but the ending still got to me because it portrayed such overwhelming emotions.
It must be analysed as to why this film is often a fragment in peoples memory. I thought it wasn't real like many, until seeing a local cinema rescreening ad pop up.
If you consider how films like this were rarely broadcasted or were distributed only through CDs people probably only had a chance to watch part of it at an obscure hour on an obscure channel block. I felt the same way about Animatrix haha
I watched this movie 4 years ago and still remember it vividly. I would put this in my list of best animated movies ever, even if I only watched it one time. It's just that good.
AHHH, it's too powerful!!! this movie, and this scene in particular, *destroyed* me as a kid. i wanted nothing to do with the movie for a long time... until finally, i thought it must be a great movie to have made me feel so strongly, so i watched it again. it's incredible..
I remember watching this movie as a kid and it completely broke my heart in a million pieces. I cried all the times I watched. Now I'm 20 and I don't know if it'll have the same effect on me now since it's been over a decade but we'll see
Always hits me in the feels, kind of happy that the part with Tima & Kenichi is an end credits photo, it makes it more dreamlike you know, I mean the film did exactly what the film should do, it didn't need a teary eyed moment between Tima & Kenichi because the film didn't need another sad moment, some tearful reunion, they weren't lovers, they were friends, and they loved each other, but it didn't need to emphasize it. So the picture at the end, with Tima driving the truck and Kenichi working at the shop, it's like one of those old pictures from the early 1900's of friends just hanging out, and that's all it really needed. Just to let us know that after is all, they were part of each others lives. And the picture in the end did that perfectly.
For more than 12 yeas I have been looking for this moment until now! reading some of the comments I saw that many people was thinking exactly like me, about how this movie touched our feelings when we were only childs... great movie and great ending!
I remember seeing this in theaters in 2001... it was a small independent theater that usually did Indie films or foreign small time movies. The whole audience was silent at the end.
It seems no actual online rips of this movie have the original film grain, someone has filtered it out. Which is a huge goddamn shame, as it blends the cg and hand drawn stuff extremely well. Kind of looks like a different movie.
crazy how 15 years later this movie still has the best 2d animation out there. The pacing really ruined it for me though.... ill need a second watch to truly appreciate the writing and directing. but the animation and music alone are 100000/10
Such a powerful scene. And the Ray Charles song just adds the poignancy. I remember seeing this back when released but it wasn't popular then due to 9/11 just happening. And this scene was so visceral mirroring that tragic day. I was blunted. (Okay, I was high) and I literally just started crying when he Kenichi couldn't save Tima. Like his whole world just came crashing down. Talk about powerful imagery. Alright, I'll shut up now.
+Mickey Flipper ...keep talking man u said wisel what i thought... btw i cryied and i was a kid and i cryied 10 y after simply becouse that brought me back to the outhness and beacause of cours e, this had a powerfull imagery
Such a haunting scene. This has been burned into my brain since my childhood, and I think that feeling was worth it. Showing my kids this movie one day too.
Shit man got me crying. I came home from school and my dad had this playing along with a few others. When we got to the ending I cried. I have been looking for this for years ever since. This is my favriote movie/anime and I cry every time I see the ending
I never cease to cry when this scene happens. I wanted Kenichi to save Tima so badly even though I understand why he couldn't. One of the most beautiful scenes ever created.
I remember this from when I was little. It brings back childhood memories from a time before i knew what love was. And now the lyrics to this song hit even harder.
For at least a decade I thought this movie was a dream and didn't exist...now I found it...
same here

I think why people mistakenly passes this film off as a dream is because it had dream-like qualities.
True, even my mind is convinced that this is somehow a dream
And nobody talks about it. It's a forgotten masterpiece.

The best destruction of human desire hands down. Watching the characters build their own undooing is the highlight of this film

Probably the most underrated, yet iconic and cinematic scenes in film, and animation history
underrated movie
@Your local Stranger how could you say that to him/she
Quite a masterpiece of a movie
The first time I saw this movie was when I was 6 years old in the very early 2000. It was quite a trippy experience, I remember I was left shaken for the rest of day after seeing that final scene.
Same , and never forget the mixed feeling between a happy song and a tragic scene
@@drumultabereim5 well, when i was a kid for me it was just a happy song
Had this on DVD when it was released but I long lost it. Man oh man this ending still hits hard. The timing for this sequence is what does it for me. Absolutely Perfect! People may give it crap for the CG that was used but..dude...This is still a classic in my Opinion. Still gets me teary.
This scene will stay with me for a really long time. This is probably the single most painful scene for me to watch. Good job, Madhouse. You really got me with this one.
My childhood right here.. probably one of the best movies ever made, god this scene made me cry.
Oh, how I wished Tima had grabbed hold.
Haruko Haruhara in the end Kenichi rebuit Tima and together they run a robot repair shop. The director took out a picture of this from the end but you can still google it and find the picture :D
Not the director, but Sony in America did. It's still present in the Japanese version.
@@Feyangel23 Yup, just watch after the credits and you'll see the pic of them in front of "Kenichi and Tima's Robot Company"
It was her time.
高貴で優雅な音楽を聴き踊りならが世界の終末を堪能する。美しかな素晴らしき世界
First time I watched this movie, soon as the song started I just applauded and began tearing up. Such a perfect song to use, it fit like a glove and now whenever I hear the song it reminds me of this scene.
For more than 10 years, this movie still affects me so much.
Specially when Tima remembers, but there are certainly some other moments during this part, which are really strong.
この映画高校の国語の時間に見ました
1人で感動してその後レンタルして3回は見ました。すごい感動ものの映画です。たまにはこうゆうアニメ映画もいいと思いました、こうゆう映画がもっと増えて欲しいです。
When music and image is in perfect unison.
This scene made me tear up when I first watched it. Beautiful movie
Do you have a comic?
Andrew Gallagher Love that film as well! Have you read the book? The book is really stellar, too, and has tons of ambience ✨
美し過ぎます!この映像美!
THE FEELS ARE SO REAL
Remember watching this on hbo late at night after waking up . And I always thought it was a dream, every once in awhile it always come backs to me out of nowhere
The animation just makes you wonder who the hell could make something as beautiful as this? Surprise. It is not Ghibli.
Byron Mak Ghilbi is trash, that's why they went out of business.
RandalfElVikingo they didn’t go out of business
Ghibli is overrated.
NoMoneyNoHamburger For a reason.
Liber Amans . . . Because Disney distributed most of their films in america so a huge portion of their american fanbase ain't really anime fans and aren't aware that it's not the only animation studio in japan?
Best examples of soundtrack dissonance.
Amazingly 2D and 3D animation effects combined with full computer graphics animation.
Til this day this scene still pulls my heart strings 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺😔😔😔😔
Its so weird
If you consider how films like this were rarely broadcasted or were distributed only through CDs people probably only had a chance to watch part of it at an obscure hour on an obscure channel block.
I felt the same way about Animatrix haha
So long since i watched this movie, now i remember why it was so heavily imprinted into me, that and the jazzy feel the soundtrack has.
every single day since I saw this for the first time in 2005 I think about this movie.
I was just thinking of these scene yesterday, but I didn't search for this video. It just appeared in my feed. Still powerful.
I watched this movie 4 years ago and still remember it vividly. I would put this in my list of best animated movies ever, even if I only watched it one time. It's just that good.
I haven't watched this film in years. Now I'm teary eyed. 😥
The shot of Tima being pulled up, with only one side of her face displayed, could be one of the loveliest shots in the history of cinema.
AHHH, it's too powerful!!! this movie, and this scene in particular, *destroyed* me as a kid. i wanted nothing to do with the movie for a long time...
until finally, i thought it must be a great movie to have made me feel so strongly, so i watched it again.
it's incredible..
Look at that quality of animated writings. It's mind-blowing.
SFIT2000 well you have the guy who did akira and who also wrote the comic. So very good quality
I remember watching this movie as a kid and it completely broke my heart in a million pieces. I cried all the times I watched. Now I'm 20 and I don't know if it'll have the same effect on me now since it's been over a decade but we'll see
stephany nope Did it?
stephany nope im also curious if it did
+stephany nope same as u ..now im 24 and i watch it in 2001 that i was 10 ...i stil feel the same sensations ...tima was real !
トラウマなんだけど、魅力があって今でも心惹かれるんだよね…
I remember seeing this in theaters in 2001... it was a small independent theater that usually did Indie films or foreign small time movies. The whole audience was silent at the end.
why did i go back to this...RIGHT IN THE FUCKING FEELS
It seems no actual online rips of this movie have the original film grain, someone has filtered it out. Which is a huge goddamn shame, as it blends the cg and hand drawn stuff extremely well. Kind of looks like a different movie.
crazy how 15 years later this movie still has the best 2d animation out there. The pacing really ruined it for me though.... ill need a second watch to truly appreciate the writing and directing. but the animation and music alone are 100000/10
I agree 100% with you
The writing isn't any good sadly, but the animation and directing makes it worth a watch at least
Transhumanist Cult Awareness Network they’ve now found 99% of it and restored it a few years ago aka “Metropolis Restored”
This scene really hit me HARD when I was younger. I used to watch it over and over again.
:)
20 years later and this movie still looks amazing
Such a haunting scene. This has been burned into my brain since my childhood, and I think that feeling was worth it. Showing my kids this movie one day too.
Shit man got me crying. I came home from school and my dad had this playing along with a few others.
When we got to the ending I cried. I have been looking for this for years ever since. This is my favriote movie/anime and I cry every time I see the ending
I never cease to cry when this scene happens. I wanted Kenichi to save Tima so badly even though I understand why he couldn't. One of the most beautiful scenes ever created.
I finally watched this after a couple of years of owning the Blu-ray. So beautiful to watch.
Saw this as a child twenty years ago...how time flys, it feels like yesterday 😭
I remember this from when I was little. It brings back childhood memories from a time before i knew what love was. And now the lyrics to this song hit even harder.
this really made me cry when i first watched it on tv.
