Light wind windfoiling with smaller sail?

Windspeed. From 5,5 to 9,5 knots (3-5m/s)
Board: Slingshot wizard 114 v3 (114 liter)
Sail: Severne blade 5,3...wrongly rigged with less downhaul, but not less outhaul to make it flat and full...like a blade
Foil: Neil Pryde Glide wind medium slim, small stab, long wind fuse, carbon mast 75cm.
Experimenting a little with apparent wind wingfoiling. Basically the theory goes like this:
Small but fat board has less wetted surfice and less suction on the surface, so it foils before it planes.
A smaller sail is more effective to pump and has less windresistance once up and flying. And its lighter.
This is all common knowledge but here is the gamechanger...(that not all will agree with..)
A smaller foil is faster and you create more apparent wind so you pick up more speed. More speed means more apparent wind and so on.
But it makes it really really hard to get up on foil and fly. You need to use "every trick in the book". Pump really hard and fast in a circular motion with the sail, syncronizing with the board pumping after waiting for the right moment, timing both the waves and gusts. - Спорт
Very nice. This is what I need.
Its a NP Atom hardshell harness, actually with a kite hook so not ideal but the windsurf hooks were sold out. But it works fine anyway, the hook is hinged so good for kite and wing when you ride toeside. But I guess also has som advantagrs for windsurfing since you can twist your hips without influence on the harness/sail balance. Maybe a little harder to hook in sometimes since the hook is smaller but not a big deal
Interesting. I used to have a race foil with a 750cm2 front wing and a long fuse, now i have a f-one levo, shorter fuse and bigger wing. Without any doubt, the race foil was faster to get up (based on a lot of testing with severne freek 5.2). The advantage of the levo is that it glides better if the wind drops and you can link gusts by pumping with your legs.
I have blades and freeks, but for me freeks feel a lot better. They are lighter and have a deep belly if you pump it. Also it goed back to neutral if you sheet out much better. Maybe I like them better because I prefer freestyle over wave too.
A very tight leach is the way to go, but I like to have my outhole so that the sail is nice and baggy. Like that, a lot of wind can get trapped in the sail and as I said, by sheeting out it gets flat again quickly.
I get going with the 5.2 in the same conditions as guys with 7-8m, but indeed it requires the right technique
Yes agree totally! The freeks or foil freeks are better. But for me I use the blade for normal wavesailing as well so its a bit of a compromise. I have one size of the new foil freek now in 5,2. Its my go-to light wind session foil sail and feels really smooth in transitions, pumps much better, and is more balanced and lighter. I love it! Made my first foil 360 and also working on new tricks now.
A racefoil is ok to use but I think its a bit unforgiving and the profile is more suitable for higher speeds and using bigger sails with more power although I know some people using race front wings for freestyle and its really good for doing eg 360ies since a race wing glides longer once you go faster.
Smaller high aspect wings for smaller sails/lower speeds are the future I think, and I have seen some using these type of wings for winging in light wind. For now its custom/proto only. Aspect ratio is a little lower than race wings but almost same. But they have different profile.

Hi, no idea sorry i have a us plate box. But I always have it further back but maybe 1-2cm more forward if I want more front foot bias for jumping. Mastbase i put around 1/3 from the back on wizard 114
Can you please comment on the length of the fuse. The longest I have is a 70cm. I am an advanced windsurfer, and have been foiling with kite and wings for a couple of years. Do I need a longer fuse (more than 70 cm) if the purpose of my windfoiling will be upstanding cruising manouvers and downwinds??? I am not interested in speeding upwind or racing!
Yes you need a longer fuse, the balance is difference in windfoiling so the wing need to be about 10cm extra forward of the mast compared to other foil sports.

I have the same setup, mb wildcat 108 and Jp medium slim and i am happy with that.
I tried the moses 790 and i will sell it because it has more resistance to get on foil and
its not so agile ( perhaps for beginning it has more stability) .
Did you try the mb pegasus 108, an do you know if any of the new JP glide
wind foils are the same like the medium slim ?
Thats interesting because I was thinking of getting the w790 wing or the Slingshot i76 or Phantasm 730 that is very similar. The only reason was that the glide system dont have a longer carbon mast. But i Thanks wings are more important. Thanks for the intel, now I know I should stick with the glide. Anyway I really like the medium slim, i also have the HP19 wing for winging. Really good wing but too big for windfoil. The designer of both the slim and new HP wings is Kane de Wilde, you can google him. The new wings are really good, but you also need the new stabiliser. You know who sell these?
I have not tried the MB pegasus, it's a really good shape I think but maybe a little heavy.

@@passatfahrer Yes, thats funny bacause I have that foil now...it feels totally different and it took some time getting used to and didnt like it at first, but now its all I use unless its super light and gusty I stick with the glide foil. And for winging also use the glide medium slim since its easier. Not more stable but more forgiving somehow.
HI. I think you had in the past a goya regular windsurf board for windfoiling and now you have an specific shorter foil board. I'm about to take that step. I'm sure manoeuvrability will be much better but the take off in light winds is better for the bigger tail or worse for the shorter length? Let's suppose same volume and sail size.Thanks
The short foil soecific board is a gamechanger. Better in every way 👍
@@Stefan-Foil I'm a bit curious about this as well. I windfoil and windsurf on a hybrid RRD LTD 155 2023 board and Slingshot Hover Glide FWind V4 2023 foil (has 1534 cm^2 front wing, low aspect)... it seems great, but if I get more into foiling, specifically looking at top speed, is a windfoil specific shorter board better for that also? Especially in light or extremely light winds, 5-10 knots, which is where I see myself foiling the most.
Or, to put it a different way, is a "better" way to increase speed to find a higher aspect front wing and possibly other parts on the foil?
OR: change to a foil-specific sail? I use freeride or wave sails from Ezzy currently.
Also, nice maneuvering in the video, I was not sure about bigger sails as much due to their higher weight, and you seemed to not need the power so much. I may still stick with going big on low wind speeds just to max out on speed / upwind ability and sacrifice maneuverability myself, but interesting to see it's possible. I like 8.5 m^2 in those conditions, me weighing in at 64 kg.
This is all very interesting mate: smaller sail, smaller front wing, 6 mt/second wind speed....I'd rather talk "knots" normally and would like to know how you did measure that....by anemo-meter or just "nosemeter"? Anyway this seems to be a "miracle" and wuite easy, doesn't it? The real question is what is your weigjt and how long you have been practicing windsurf foiling? Without these two answers, small sails small wing....small wind means nothing to me.
Look in the description, I just added my weight, 85kg at the time, (clipp is from last year) There are ways to estimate windspeed by looking at the water state and there is also a windmeter at the spot. I use a big foil but sail is not ideal, I now have a better sail, Severne foil freek, I need even less wind now. Biggest size i need is 5,2. 👌

I rigg with less downhaul you mean? For foiling in light wind makes it not twist in the top.

Two kitsurfings working the kite a lot but they dont foiling. So… at least 12 knots. But is my opinion;) 12knots i can go with my 39cm fin 116l board and 7.8 sail easy! 80kg
Only one kite without foil, she had some problems to get the kite up if I remember correctly and also light weight. Most kitesurfers waited on the beach, no windsurfers bothered to even try. Its normally a popular spot. Anyway, there is a windmeter at the spot and it was super light winds so good luck with using a fin. Even if you could plane in a 12 knot gust it would only last a few seconds and you would slog for 10 min waiting for another gust. Edit: after looking at this video again I do say its 3-5m/s wind and a few gusts at maximum 6m/s (=12 knots).
@@Stefan-Foil i also can go with fórmula board and 11m sail ;) what setup up whould you suggest to go with 10knots? Is better with a large foil board like iqfoil or a board like you have? Qnd and the sail? Thanks!
@@abiliodinis746 I also used to ride foil race gear, 91-100cm wide and 9,0m sail but personally dont like it. This spot have to carry gear long to the beach, formula gear or race foil gear are big/heavy. Although probably get up earlier in lighter wind and alot faster. For me, I mostly wingfoil last few month 😛
@@Stefan-Foil but have you ever tired both setups at same time ? Like have the foil race with 9.0 and the freeride slingshot board and a 5 ou 6 M sail to compare each one has the earliest get up? Whould be Nice ;)
