The impact of this song and performance is simply stunning. I've listened to it for years and am continually amazed at the size of the HEART in this song. "To the Shibboleth of Shadow Land" Oh My God! Brilliant. A huge shout out to the bass and lead guitars...perfection.
Just as powerful as the studio version, showing that this huge song stands on it's own to reach it's power. And regardless of comparisons, this performance is outstandingly electric. I think I feel a Colvin Marathon coming on......
This has remained my favorite piece of Shawn Colvin's for many years. The studio production was absolutely brilliant, with its huge, layered ambient textures and bigger-than-life sound, so expertly paired with her powerful and thought-provoking lyrics and dazzling vocal styings. This scaled-down live version remain as incredibly powerful, to me, as it did, when I first viewed it, many years ago. Tremendous performance and feel to it that still moves me deeply today. I'm in total agreement with Jordan Zs comment posted much earlier here. Shawn Colvin truly is and remains one of the finest songwriters of our generation. She's got the goods and knows how deliver them, in spades. I'd never have believed that a piece of such magnitude could be pulled off, as a three-piece configuration, without the benefit of having the zillion layers of instrumentation found in the original arrangement and recording; but here these three are, absolutely killing it, and in tremendous form. Gorgeously matched talent, here. What I've have given to see this performance, live. I hope, one day, to finally see her play live. To this day, that still has not happened. Superb writer and performer. A much belated but very heart thank you, to the person who posted this. Still enjoying and appreciating it many years later.

What kills me is the crowd, sullen and dead faced, did the show pick them for this quality? My wife and I had the chance to talk to Shawn years ago at the 09.09.99 show in Tinley Park,IL and she said she liked a dynamic crowd. I would have liked to a little noise anyway.
