We sturen DIT??"
This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is gabber music - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, and the sub genre is called happy hardcore. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art. The lyrics have a lot of layers: Europe let’s come together! It’s now or never! I love you all! Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Visit my friends in France Or take a long walk to Vienna I want to leave the Netherlands But my passport is gone Fortunately don't need a visa To be with you So take the bus to Poland Or the train to Berlin I have no money for Paris So use my imagination Do you have a euro please Say "merci" and "please" I lost everything Except time So am travelling every day For the world is mine Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Eu-ro-pa! An American couple reviewed this song. They first partied their brains out and then were completely overwhelmed by the sad ending. It took them 30 seconds to recover with sad eyes, wide eyes and open mouths, and finally said "That took us places." I was thinking of that watching you the first half minute after the song ended 🙂

It took a while, but you got to EUROPAPA. Such a contrast between the feel of the song and the ultimate message (which most of us have to read about). As happy as this song sounds, it's a sad song. Actually, he describes his life in a few minutes; In the first verse, he talks about losing everything. An important part is the death of his parents when he was 12/13 years old. In the second verse, he talks about how alone and lonely he is. He also says that he needed help because of depression and being homeless and apparently insufficiently helped I don't understand the reference to stromai (bad in french). The leonardi da vinci (The Last Supper) scene may refer to one of his songs in which he sings that he is god. If I remember correctly, his father once told him that he should keep writing poetry. The house with the mill is the place in which he grew up (with all the shit) and possibly burning it down, taking a new step into a new world without borders in which he can do whatever he wants
Flemish is not a language I believe. That would make no sense at all. Flemish literally IS Dutch language. The official language in Flanders is 100% Dutch.... Just like the official language in Wallonia the southern part of Belgium is 100% French. If Flemish is a 'language' besides Dutch than there are like a hundred different languages throughout The Netherlands and Flanders. Becasue of small accent differences. I am Dutch and when I watch Belgian TV from Flanders the language spoken is Dutch. If Flemish is a language ... I guess I can proudly say I speak Flemish fluently without even trying :)

Why don't you turn on those subtitles. It is included in all languages. Because you are not familiar with the language, you miss the entire essence of this song. And because of this alone, the non-English songs often lose a lot of points. While they all say that more action should be taken in their own language and culture. If you turn on subtitles, we give non-English performing groups a fairer chance compared to all those English-speaking groups. This Song is not only a work of art musically, but also a work of art lyrically. Showing an entire life with all its wishes and sorrows in three minutes, ultimately ending in a conclusion in which he ends the same past and present by burning it all for a new beginning. But unfortunately, because of that, this Song will end up with the jury members who have no knowledge of art and forget to include the translation.

Stay here until I die
Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa

Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
Visit my friends in France
Or take a long walk to Vienna
I want to leave the Netherlands
But my passport is gone
Fortunately don't need a visa
To be with you
So take the bus to Poland
Or the train to Berlin
I have no money for Paris
So use my imagination
Do you have a euro please
Say "merci" and "please"
I lost everything
Except time
So am travelling every day
For the world is mine

but still I feel pain
Am running from myself
Calling for "help!" all day long
Yes I even give people money
But there is no one to help me
I don't need es-car-gots
Don't need fish 'n chips
Don't need paella, no
I don't even really know what that is
Turn on the radio
I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai"
Won't stop until they say
"Yes, yes, he does that very well ey!"
