Joost Klein dedicated this song to his father, who died when he was 12 years old due to cancer. His dad taught him that the world has no actual boundaries. His mother died a year later, when he was 13, due to cardiac arrest. Before his dad passed, Joost was already writing all kinds of stuff and promised one day he was going to go to Eurovision. He has gone through so many challenges in life, and it is a true inspiration to see how he deals with them.

You’re joking right? I have heard a lot of trashy songs on Eurovision, and the Netherlands has surely send a few in the last 30 years, and this one is definitely the worst of the worst. Even if there’s a sort of message in the lyrics, no one is going to understand any of it if it’s in Dutch.
Just wanted to point out its quite clever to mention papaoutai (french for dad where are you) in a Dutch song about the loss of a dad :)

Joost Klein was born on 10 November 1997 in Leeuwarden, Friesland and grew up in the nearby village of Britsum. At the age of twelve, he lost his father to cancer. A year later, in 2011, his mother died of a cardiac arrest. Following the death of his parents, Klein was looked after by his older brother and sister. This song is an ode to his father. I’m dutch and I’m really proud of Joost Klein and this song. Joost (26 yrs old) is an amazing artist. Unfortunately his father died of cancer when he was just 12 years old. His mother died one year later (heart attack). It’s really sad. It took a lot of time for him to process these traumas. He wrote this song to honor his father. It’s about an orphan who travels through Europe and sees no boundaries, just like what his father learned him once. His parents loved eurovision songfestival and he dedicated this song to them. All these things make that I really wish he wins!

Here in The Netherlands we don’t know either. Apparently he has hit a Swedish camera woman, because they said some bad stuff about his diseased parents. But these are all just still rumours. The police have arrived now and they are still investigating with all parties involved. Wibiblogs said that if he really did something bad, he would have been disqualified immediately. So there is still hope he can perform tomorrow, although I highly doubt it.
