ps the hardened tool steel scraper you used ( it’s actually a blade sharpener ) will ripple the surface of your ferro rod. ( you can actually see it on your camera ) You CAN fix the ripples with a bit of sanding. You just really don’t need to ruin it to start with.
the ripples don't hurt the rod .. if his technique was better with the tool sharpener it wouldn't make marks ... i've been using the corona tool sharpener for over a decade, they're the best i've found
@@sangamonriverrats6769 What do you do to keep it from leaving ripples in the surface? I bought a light my fire and one of those soft ones and both of them left ripples in the surface from the carbide sharpener that made the rod harder and harder to use.
You need to feel for the “burr” on the Gryls striker. That is a pretty common striker, but it is not effective on ALL edges. Some knife spines are designed to strike ferro rods….some aren’t. Technic is 90% of success. And practice, practice, practice !!!
Say Heah, I have knives, I also have saw blades asw scrapers, But I like my Swiss Army Ferro Rid Scraper, its Reddish with a Whistle, I like it the best, Its thumb molded, The reason I like it, I can use just my top end on my ferro rod so I don't waist too much ferro rod, I also use it on my magnesium;ferro rod Grizzzly Bar.,,.
Bayite make good scrapers too. Reasonably priced too.

@@westcoastwarriorsarchive7929 its in the angle the you strike at .. a slight diagonal angle will help with the ripples ...
Sir, great presentation. Thank you.
Interessante. Complimenti video molto utile.👍🔥Ps... cosa pensi sullo striker in ( seramic-zirconio?) Grazie
Thank you, Sir.
Hey Red Dog- Whats that black multitool belt pouch called. Im looking for something like that. Thanks-
Thanks for the video. I didn't realize you could use glass for a striker.
broken scissors blade too. Those work super nice.
if your having trouble with your scraper drag it across a sharpening stone and draw up a bur on the edge you use...
Links please to the best one.
I agree, an intended scraper is the best. The back of a knife is not intended to be a scraper, at least on the average.

Most of your Ferro rods look shiny, do you recommend removing all the black coating from a new rod? Great vid btw.
No keep them coated. Mine are used teaching classes and get lots of use.
RedDogBushCraft thank you so very much. It really helps
