I'm a huge metal fan and player, but i have to say i love listening to this kind of playing and i'd love to able to play like this, honestly in my opinion flamenco guitarests r the most talented of the lot. max respect
I love how he plays... So effortless. It's almost as if he simply sits there, and allows his fingers to translate the spirit of flamenco through the strings, whilst he sits and listens to what it say to him. There's no composition, theres no process behind it, it's just fluidity. Flamenco is a dynamic language without words, and Paco speaks it his way - and perfectly so.
And to add to the story Paco was under tremendous pressure from the flamenco community for changing such a revered song. So this particular version was very special. Obvious to anyone
Every great guitarist in history has inspired me to practice more. But Paco is the only one that at hearing him for the first time, made me want to put down the guitar. Just stunning.
I saw this video 15 months ago, and it was what got me started playing flamenco. Previously I've been playing electric for 8 years. After watching this, completely switched to acoustic nylon and never looked back.
+ubershredder1989 Ive been playing 12 months now after many years playing metal. Was introduced to flamenco by Irish player John Walsh, you NEED to check him out!
ubershredder1989 same here. I started playing guitar back in 05 and i just got introduced to flamenco. I cant get enough now, i love the sound and technics of flamenco.
He is playing impetu with such a superior technique and such ease that he almost looks bored!! As if his hands are doing the work and he is simply listening... Inspirational. Thanks for the video.
This performance is totally breathtaking! Superhuman chops, flawless! Sense of rhythm is perfect. Paco, the standard by which all others are judged. He rules! Awesome vid! Thanks! Totally inspiring!
every type of playing has its place.. But for this stuff he is the 'Master' wonderfull.. On a tecnical level of course he is superb and the work required to do it is beyond imagination.. But we couldnt listen to that intensity all day could we.?.so three cheers for three chord wonders out there also :-)
Incredible guitarist an influence for me, he reinforced that one is free to express in their music. I will regret not having taken the opportunity to see him perform live. He lives on in his music and what a joy to hear, truly one of the most prolific and innovative artists. Smokin fast fingers, precision and passion, I will miss him. May God's blessings be upon his family.
God bless Paco I'm honored to have seen him in 2013. Very lucky! I've seen all the greats except Julian Bream and learned from many masters of guitar. Paco felt every note he ever played, his passion for Flamenco guitar just leaves us all in a state of shock. Love and respect for all time.
Viva a música espanhola.
Can't stop watching this. Been listening for years, (got Friday night in San Francisco when it was new) but I am always amazed at how many nearly impossible skills he has and shows effortlessly playing this piece. It's like watching a seagull fly without flapping their wings, only he can play like that.
That guitar roll he does in 2:20 is so flawless and he's already been playing for 2 minutes! That same roll can be heard in a metal song by Jason Becker "Mabel's Fatal Fabel". The fact that paco is playing this good LIVE is just crazy
When I watched this video, it reminded me that we all should take full advantage of the time we have while we are alive!!!!. And do ONLY the things that we LOVE and are PASSIONATE about.!!!!! Everything else is secondary.
Not gonna comment on his godlike playing, since everyone else did (and knows of it). But damn, he was one handsome guy with the short hair, wasn't he? More proof that the 70s and 80s were a mistake when it comes to fashion lol (glad we all went back to short hair). Anyway, not a single day passes where his talent and presence is not missed. Truly, the greatest acoustic guitarist ever IMO.
Excellent quality vintage TVE film , this is a cultural treasure. Music is always a matter of taste, for me Paco is a superstar. No classical guitarist could ever match the inspiration, passion, power, and creativity that is the music of Paco.
I love this - shows that the masters of later genius start with building blocks, and what superb blocks! Wow! he is great - a true master. Thanks for this marvelous video.
Brilliant time-document this right here! If I ever had a bucketlist, seeign Paco de Lucia live would be ranked at the very top no doubt, his passing still deeply saddens me to this day. Damn man, RIP one of the last true legends.
Amazing. The best clasic guitar player in the world. How can somebody have so much power and genius.. fantastic, better than al di meola in my opinion.
Impetu is a very difficult Bulerias actually composed by Mario Escudero. Paco`s guitar is fresh and clear as always. I learned all of this piece some years ago, but to make it flow, and to sound clean is something I`am still working with. Paco is unbelivable.
I know the feeling exactly. But you must admit, even you feel certain moments of greatness when you play, or else you would never have continued the painful task of learning the instrument. So, you may stand in awe of Paco's talent, but just like him, your passion for playing the guitar should be all that really matters.
One of the ways you can really tell a master is by their economy of motion. With the exception of one section late in "Impetu" with very rapid thumb movement, most of the time his right hand movements are so small and fluid and unhurried that they seem to be occurring in slow motion. He is not moving more than a micrometer more than he needs to, and as someone trying to really improve my technique, it's incredible to watch.
the rapid thumb movement you refer to is the flamenco technique of alzapua and as a flamenco player i can tell you it is incredibly incredibly incredibly INCREDIBLY difficult to get to his level of speed and precision with alzapua
Even though I know nothing about flemenco music. In my humble opinion this man is the best guitarist in the world regardless of ones' musical tastes. No other guitar player has amazed me more.
These two pieces by Escudero and Esteban respectively, were learned most likely by Paco slowing down the turns of his record players. It is possible he learned them when he visted NY where Escudero lived during the mid 60's. It is safe to assume that neither Escudero (gitano nor Esteban Sanlucar (payo) could read the score to their own compositions either, if it were shown to them. Flamenco guitar has a different discipline for learning than other guitar genres.

His technique was out of this world. The best I've seen so far, not only in flamenco but guitar in general.

Gerardo Nuñez and Narciso Yepes were as good, if not better technically speaking. Julian Bream is also up there in skill level.
