  • Today we give the 2016 Africa Twin a seriously needed suspension upgrade. The stock forks and shock are set up for max 175 lb rider. That's crazy light! Add fuel and luggage and you're way over that weight. Cogent Dynamics Shock Spring, Fork Springs and Fork Valve Kit took the spongy unpredictable stock suspension and made the bike much more controllable for weights well about 200 lbs.. The bike even handles the streets much better. More control = less energy to ride. Check out Cogent Dynamics at www.motocd.com

    Thanks for this one. I just had this done on my FJR and what an amazing difference in performance. I wasn't able to watch him rebuild them so this video is on point.

    Nice video and some awesome riding! @shock therapy did a nice job and explained well. Thank you for the kind words. Be careful on those jumps 😂

    Thanks for this, I definitely agree that the AT needs a different suspension. I went with HyperPro because it lowered my ATAS 25mm which I really needed. I was really bothered by the brake dive while stopping hard. I also agree that having a shop do the work was well worth it, I didn’t have all of the tools, nor did I have the knowledge to get this done properly. I’m like 90% a road rider, hopefully I get to get some mild dirt riding in some day.

    The soft suspension is what makes the bike good

    What about the bushings between the fork top tube and bottom slider? The 2016/2017 AT models were known for having excessive wear on those bearings. Did you address this? (I have a 2017 model and and have worried about this)

    Nice job! I did a similar job to my 2016. I have a question though. When filling the fork with oil, shouldn't you have the spring inside the fork? The new spring is thicker and will displace more oil. I measured the oil height with the OEM springs and then refilled to the same height with the newer thicker springs.

    • @LostInADV

      Manual states adding oil with spring out.

    • @Backroad_cruising
      @Backroad_cruising 11 місяців тому

      @@LostInADV the manual assumes you are using the same springs, not thicker longer ones.

    I noticed he clamped aluminum the fork slider in the jaws of the vise without soft jaws or anything protecting the anodized aluminum. Or did I not see that right ?Hmmmm

    Would it actually kill the major manufacturers to release their bikes with this stuff already installed? I'd happily pay to have the factory do it before I purchase. It's not rocket science and I cannot figure out why it's not an option.

    Wtf is wrong with you all.
    I have stock at suspension with damping set to lowest and shock is still to hard.
    Fork is perfect. I weight 80kg. Nothing bottoms out when riding even pretty quick through whoops.
    The only issue is as with all bikes adjustment doesn't affect damping much. Its like maybe 5-10%, and shock rebound does adjust both reb and compression unfortunately as always. So rear gets kicked back with the lowest setting of reb, but if i increase it it becomes very uncomfortable and compression is way too much. Pretty much ktm950 adv have exact same issue.
    Forks on ktm had better fast compression ( riding on sidewalk or roots) for bigger hits.
    On smaller hits at forks work better and you almost feel nothing which is lovely and how it should be.
    Stock rear need lil more rebound and less compression. And its waaay too progressive but that's also problem with most linkage rear systems. Top 30% of travel is so soft it doesn't do anything. And last 30% gets so hard its very harsh and uncomfortable.
    Also plastic shock body is shame for this class of bike.
    Generally acceptable stock suspension.
    Just setup is fucked but still less than in most other bikes

      How do you have the compression and rebound dampening set on your bike exactly?

    • @Angry-Lynx
      @Angry-Lynx Рік тому +1

      @@IAmYourReflection on the front? Both minimum. Preload mid. That works for me.
      With rear im still experimenting but i think i found happy medium of having as little comp damping as possible while also have rear not bounce up on bigger hits.
      Comp min, reb 20 cc clicks, 9clicks preload(default preload).
      Any more preload or less reb and you have rear kicking back up, more rebound and its getting unnecessarily stiff.
      Still to hard compression for my taste but generally its acceptable.
      Fork got super harsh after hard riding last time, probably pressure build up

      @@Angry-Lynx what sort of riding is that tuned for? Thanks

    • @Angry-Lynx
      @Angry-Lynx Рік тому +1

      just like with tire pressure i almost never tune for some specific scenaario but aim for something that works for general dual sport/adv riding. it works well on and offroad.
      but even for aggro off, the only thing i would change is add few clicks on rebound on rear shock,like mentioned, that increasae comp too@@IAmYourReflection
