Project Cherokee - How to Service an AW4
Вставка

- Project Cherokee's AW4 gets a new filter and awaits cleaning and new breather hoses. I used the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' ideology as opposed to a full rebuild. I'm also considering testing out a few new techniques to clean up the wiring harness on the transmission.

Might want to throw in a new rear output shaft seal while you have it out. Input on t-case also.
one could have saved a lot of work by draining the thing first then pulling the pan
I did drain before I pulled the drivetrain. Just some residual fluid in there
Might mention what size sockets you're using when you're performing each task
Good idea, welcome to the channel!
I have this transmission up in my 1987 Jeep Wagoneer XJ Limited, S6 4.0L. I'm looking to clean and service it while it's mounted. I ordered a gasket for the pan and want to learn how to adjust the bands for 3rd and 4th gear. I have a torque wrench and full torque specs in my repair manual. Any advice?
The trans has 62,000 original miles on it and runs really well except for when it shifts into 3rd and 4th! :)
Thanks for the video!
Edit: 10:20 is this some sort of filter?
That’s the trans oil filter. I’d definitely buy the filter as well- it’ll shift even better. There’s a shift kit out there that others enjoy, but I haven’t installed it yet.
you realize there is a drain plug and if so why didn't you use it?
With a flat pan there’s always going to be a bunch of residual fluid after the drain plug as been pulled
@@motolayne true but drain most of it and when you drop the pan there is not all that fluid pouring out making a big mess thats what i mean
I'm old... I can't work off the floor anymore. Wouldn't be easier to work on a table ?
Definitely would be easier to work on a table.
Maybe you can tell me... when you have the torque converter in fully does it rotate still ? I just got mine "rebuilt" by a shop and they returned it back to me with the torque converter out of it and said make sure I push it in fully well im 100% sure its in fully and it is locked up. I think the shop messed up something feels like the oil pump may be seized. Any ideas? I kicked it through all the gears too and it just doesnt turn at all.
Torque converted seated fully will spin, but the tail shaft will stay still. You’d have to spin the converted past idle rpm to get the tail shaft to move. Sorry for the late reply!
13:55 I've been reading up on converting to -AN fittings for the trans lines, and all my research has indicated one should use adapters with orings. It looked like there was an o-ring on your OEM aft adapter when you removed it (hard to tell in the video). Have you had any leak issues yet using just the sealant?
I wish I could say it was driving again, but I’ll keep you updated!
I used orings for this and they’ve been fine so far.
Where do I get the conmections that You replaced for the lines. And what measurements are they?
Me acaban de reparar una transmisiom de la misma el dia de hoy
Wow. That fluid was beyond burnt. Doubt that trans has much life left in it. I would be sketched out to use the trans at all after seeing that! It running ok? The AW4 is well known for running excessively hot & cooking the fluid.
Speaking of... Do yourself a favor and run as big of an aftermarket cooler as you can. Don't even bother using factory lines that run through the bottom of your radiator. Just get new lines and run them to a new, stand alone cooler with a fan just for that cooler. Mount it up, underneath the vehicle too if you can. You will extend the life dramatically this way!
Trans was running flawlessly when it was driving 1.5 years ago! I got some mishimoto coolers for the trans and oil
Man that fluid looks rough. Should have been changed a while ago.
