You got years left on that deck. I redid my 17 year old X585 deck a while back and it's good for another 10 years now. Nice job.

That’s good to know! A new deck is 1/3 the price of a whole new machine! That’s an expense I’d like to avoid!

I kept hearing you stating that you are going to sharpen the blades and mount them prior to torquing everything down.
I’m not sure if you are aware but, I am only going to respectfully share some advice when it comes to sharpening your blades before installing them. If you like, you obviously have the inherent right to ignore it or modify as you see fit.
Before sharpening any mower blades one should thoroughly clean them in their entirety. I’ve found that a pressure washer works wonders for this. Just ensure you have a protective surface beneath the blade before using high pressure water, it will prevent you from being coated in mud and debris in the event you receive back spray.
If this is not possible, one can purchase a 6” or 8” bench grinder and replace one of the stones with a wire wheel of the same diameter and clean the blade with that.
Once thoroughly cleaned and dry it is a good idea to check them for trueness. If they are bent it would make no sense in going any further with that specific blade. Replace.
Once one has ensured the blade is clean and straight, now it can be properly sharpened.
Try to maintain the factory angle (most are a 30 degree angle) when sharpening. It is also a good idea to try to remember approximately how much pressure is maintained during the process as well as how many passes it took to obtain the sharpness you are looking for.
Try to the best of your ability to repeat this exact process on the opposing side of the same blade.
This will make it much easier and more efficient to balance the blades once you have obtained the edge you aimed for.
If you don’t have a blade balance, you can take the blade of a screwdriver or something similar and place it in a vice or some other method of securing it, making sure it is as level as possible. Measure the length of the mower blade and split that number in half, take that measurement and make a small mark in the center of the blade at that point. Ensure to mark it perpendicular to the secured balancing object.
Place the blade on the secured object perpendicular to it and ensure it sits directly on the mark that’s made in the center of the blade. The side that dips is the heavy side, continue to sharpen the heavy side or take a very small drill bit and continue to drill a hole at the outside edge of the heavy side until balanced. It will in-fact balance out with patience.
The purchase for a blade balancer can be anywhere from an economical to a professional style on Amazon or elsewhere.
As well the same can be said for the purchase of an economical blade sharpening device to a professional quality one.
The items I have attached are only for your awareness and should not be taken as something you should purchase. If you are interested you should take the time to research each of the items attached as there are different manufacturers for each product. They range from economical to professional. In the event you end up deciding to purchase one of the styles attached, the one you choose should be based upon your own research and decision.
The balancer that is marked as the BEST option (MAG-1000 Professional Blade Balancing Instrument) is the one I currently own. It has a shiny steel rod that has a bend in it, this rod is what is utilized to check each blade for trueness. It will make it easier for you to identify a bent blade, by how much of a bend, as well as where the bend is.
Any balancer with this rod lets one know that they can check for bent blades.
I hope this helps you out, and anyone else who reads this thread in choosing a device if you either, were not aware of them or already have them.

Rust-oleum "Sun Yellow" is a great match for JD Yellow. It's only 6.95 here in Florida. I actually like it better as it's just a touch deeper yellow.

It is awaist of time trying to paint it will come off after a couple of cuts i got mine galvanized over 12years ago it also makes the steel stronger not sure if u could do this to a gohn deer deck as steel is not as thick as the kubotas also if u are not planning to get it galvanized get it sandblasted as paint will stick to it better

Great comment! Since they’re John Deere’s I won’t be spending a penny on them because they’re junk. Easy to maintain … but junk. If the decks rot off of them I’ll use them to pull wagons exclusively and buy a Kubota zero turn lol. Thanks for tuning in!!

    • @speedbuggy6269

If the surface to be painted has been properly prepared (rust removed, subsequent dust and debris removed, thoroughly wiped down with a degreaser and cleaner) and the bare surface properly protected (rust inhibitors, bare metal primer) and ultimately properly painted and maintained (properly washed, rinsed and apply a highly rated wax or other protective coating) the final product will last for many years, even if scratched or dented. Only where there is immediate damage would the surface need to be addressed.
More recently, the John Deere stamped mower decks are slightly thicker than Kubota. John Deere: 7 or 11 gauge. Kubota stamped standard: 12 gauge.
Since galvanizing is generally a hot dip process coating and does not penetrate the underlying steel, it will therefore not affect the tensile strength of the original material.
The galvanized coating however, is itself a very strong and durable coating that will resist rust from penetrating the underlying surface of the structure it is applied to for an undetermined period of time.
If the coating takes a hard direct hit and chips or is scraped off, the steel structure beneath will dent or gouge depending upon how hard it was struck or scraped. Once the galvanized coating has been compromised, the components that cause rust (moisture, salts, different chemicals etc) will eventually come in contact with the metal beneath and the metal will start to rust.
Once rust begins and is not eliminated, it will spread beneath the coating, once this happens the bond between the coating and the structure beneath, will weaken and the coating will be easily removed thereby exposing more of the surface below. The process continues.
It is true that if a rusty surface is properly sand blasted and the surface is properly cleaned and treated, primer or paint will “stick” to the surface more effectively.
