Tom Maholchic: Hyperacusis with Pain

- Tom Maholchic suffers from hyperacusis with pain: almost any noise is akin to stabbing icepicks or molten steel in his ears. At Mass. Eye and Ear, Dr. M. Charles Liberman, director of the Eaton-Peabody Laboratories, and Dr. Bradley Welling, chief of otolaryngology, are searching for a cure.
He’s incredibly lucky to have supportive and informed parents. Having an invisible disability and pain condition is really life altering. Mine isn’t as bad as his, so I feel blessed to have it milder, and only in one ear.
Did you recover
Is it permanent if it started suddenly from unknown disease or autoimmune condition?
Indeed.
@@allseeinglies7091 probably the vaccine I notice mine after my 3rd booster and there’s articles out there that are saying that mRNA can damage hair cells in the ear
@@allseeinglies7091 I believe a portion of this is hereditary. However, my son has a very sever case. When he was 2 he was involved in a serious accident. His eardrum was completely severed, two of the three small bones in his middle ear were dislodged and broken, and his cochlea was punctured. He spent almost a month in CHOP. His Otolaryngologist believes this was a major factor.
OMG, I can't believe you would have those horrible sounds on a video that's going to be watched by people with hyperacusis. Seriously, what were you thinking?
Exactly. This was a terrible decision
Seriously! My ears started ringing so bad 😫
I find, I have severe hyperacusis x10 it seems some days :-( - that I put the volume down before I start a video, and then turn it up as is possible, rather than just.. start it not knowing how loud it would be.. speaking of icepicks.. I don't always remember, but.. mostly I do, and it does work..for me anyway.. fwiw..
2 years of same problem.FIRST FIND TGE REASON.
COLD THINGS NOT EATING HELPS.
Just like J Burrows - I too have chronic or severe Hyperacusis. I start all videos on low and then take care to turn them up too. Blame is of no use. Even with a rare chronic disorder I believe that all people need to take responsibility for looking after themselves, ultimately. Perhaps a warning would be nice. I've done that before on one of my videos for instance. Those of us with Hyperacusis sooner or later need to accept that we have to learn the hard way, it sucks, but at the same time it just is what it is.
A video which will be watched by people with hyperacusis.Full of loud sound effects. What the actual flip. What were you thinking when editing this.
It's so amazing his family is supportive and considerate. My family literally told me "so now I must change my life because of you?"
That's just toxic
Kill them
Smh
Answer, “Yes. Duh. You’re my family. Wtf.”
They are narcissists. Narcissistic families suck.
My family just tells me stop feeling sorry for myself.
Running water. A pop of a soda can. Brakes on a school bus. A fork hitting a plate. A tea kettle.
I 100% get it.
It’s a disability no one sees. I can relate to so many things in this video. Icepick in my ear. An increase of tinnitus after a loud noise.
It gives me heartache, fear and anxiety knowing I’ll have this for the rest of my life.
I experience the same triggers you say, clunky things hitting together or like plastic bags, squeeky floors , sudden noises like sneezing or coughs

Deep gratitude to the team at Mass. Eye and Ear for working to find a cure for this terrible condition. Some people seem to recover partially or fully, but many do not respond to any existing treatments. A cure is desperately needed because severe cases are completely disabling.
David Treworgy I have the same severe condition as Tom..I hope they find a cure for us..very soon..
I consider myself so lucky. I had a severe case of this for 10 months. I wanted to kill myself. The only things that made me hang on were my two young children. It felt like someone was sticking hot, metal sticks deep into my ears. The pain radiated into my scalp and it burned, and sounds were like knives shoved into my ear canals. After 10 months it started to diminish very slowly. It took about three years to where I could go to the movies and go to loud restaurants. I've had maybe two minor relapses since (but not with the pain, just the sensitivity). The only remnant of this horrible condition that I have left is tinnitus, but after having hyperacusis, tinnitus isn't the worst of it. I'm completely attenuated to it now and barely notice it. Nine years later, I am 95% healed. I think the biggest thing for me was not caving into people that were telling me to wear ear muffs/ear plugs. I refused and it was hell, but it worked for me. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
@@fgfg633 you have hyperacusis but have kids how is that possible I will never have a kid because of this bullshit disorder
I’m adding my comment here because I’m losing it. Everything he says in this video is accurate though I have been “tested for this” and it came up false. I don’t know how much longer I can keep this up.
@@fgfg633 How did you get the tinnitus and hyperacusis? Is it from hearing damage?
10 years ago I had episodes of vertigo post which I developed tinnitus. But within weeks I got used to the sound. Last aug vertigo episodes started again but this time it was at a whole new level. Then came the nightmare HYPERACUSIS and tinnitus also became loud and irritating. But by god's grace vertigo and hyperacusis eventually subsided. For me, those 4 months were a nightmare. I had panic attacks and I developed suicidal tendencies. God help those who suffer from these horrible conditions
How did you heal from hiperacusis?
I am struggling now
Hello bro please help
How did hyperacusis reduced
Do you have an illness? Or were you on a certain medication that caused it?
I hope one day there is a cure for Tom, Cindy and anyone who needs it. It's a mystery why some pain H sufferers get better on their own and others don't.
I'm right there at his level and it's truly a nightmare that has halted my life for the past 7 months. The burning that comes everyday even when in silence is intolerable. It often gets a bit more tolerable when in complete silence for weeks but any type of movement to return back to a functional life (like trying to watch videos without captions or take showers without earmuffs) brings it right back to intolerable levels again. This affects many veterans who were exposed to loud noise, same as tinnitus, but it doesn't affect quite as many people so the Department of Defense doesn't fund anything for it and nobody really knows about it until it happens to them.
How are you feeling now, is it better ?
@@liamlecool I've seen very small improvements. The burning, thank god, has reduced a lot and is gone most days. I have gradually been able to wean off earplugs, starting with in the house, and then I just wear them partially in when outside (Except while near traffic) and I only go outside 20 minutes or so at a time twice a week for food and thats it. Still no showers without plugs or social life or working and I cant talk long because that seems to make it much worse. I believe part of this is physical, but there's also a very strong psychological part that makes it so much worse as well, at least in my case. I had to work on the psychological part to see any improvements. It's like if the physical part made me a 4/10 as far as quality of life, the psychological part made the burning worse and brought things down to a 0/10. By working on the psychological part and trying to calm my nervous system, I've gotten back to a 4/10.

It happened to me after I got the rona. It makes it hard to enjoy life at all. The sound from showers is literally nauseating and like somebody digging a claw all the way in and pushing your head down in agony. Awful 😖
@@christopherleubner6633 Showers are no longer an issue for me. I'm 99% better in most regards. I had to desensitize and that took months, involved very slow steps back into sound, using distance if it was a sound I couldn't tolerate up close and it was very important that I changed my thoughts towards both the sounds and this condition. I'm certain some neuroplasticity took place and calmed the nerves and muscles in the ears. Most people are not receptive to this, so that's all I'll say and that it's a very personalized approach one has to take so not something that can be easily taught to someone else, even if they are receptive.

You’re not alone there pal I first developed Hyperacusis when I was 18 and then a year later I got a job at Burger King after a few months of working there I had to keep listening to the loud beeping of the fryer it was very loud and half the people I worked with were deaf but for some reason it started to really hurt my ears so I had to wear earplugs and after wearing them constantly every day for two years that’s when I started to develop hyperacusis it is very painful to listen to the sounds that most people don’t find loud but I am currently going under treatment for it

Over 14 years dj, now Its over. Hyperacusis - Loud Tinnitus- pressure and pain on booth ears.
I can not imagine to not hear my beloved music. So I will do anything in my power to save hearing I still have. I am being gang stalked, complete strangers in that gang will purposely introduce loud noises close to my ears in order to hurt me. Since I never know who these strangers are that are in that stalking gang it is fairly easy for them to get close enough for a couple of seconds to introduce high decibel sounds which they do just to hurt me.
I had surgery at the Silverstein Institute four months ago. Round/Oval window and stapes bone reinforcement, trauma caused by acoustic shock syndrome. (Explosion) My hyperacusis is not gone but I can tolerate sounds better than before. I still flinch at hard syllables (plosives) S and T sounds when people are speaking indoors or in close proximity but my tolerance has improved. My tinnitus is as bad as ever, literally sounds like a dentist drill in my left ear. The surgery helped, my sound tolerance has improved but I still flinch at normal sounds and generally avoid noisy situations. I would say that the surgery is worth it even though it’s not a miracle cure.
So do you have pain hyperacusis? Or just hyperacusis? I’ve been looking at the surgery for a long time . Did it affect your t at all ?
My hyperacusis is like staring at the sun with every little sound. The surgery helped some but I’m going to get my other ear operated on because I’m still suffering. It’s not as bad as before surgery but I’m thinking it will be worth it to get both ears fixed. I had a hyper mobile stapes bone in my left ear and I’m sure that’s what’s going on with my right ear. Result of an explosion at work (acoustic shock syndrome)
Well I hope the next one helps too ! Did your ears flutter at any little sound ? And my main issue is the horrible burning aching pain I get to most noise.
@scottbailes12how would that help hyperacusis
Yes this is one very intense part of my life! After five years tho, I have learned a million life tricks to keep living. Get outside and smiling is a big daily must for me. Box fan and UA-cam sound videos at night. Headphones only periodically. Don’t let the fear and your emotions take over. I have worked everyday to get my life back. I can’t, but I can enjoy a new life. You can too!
How do you wear headphones if you have this?
I have had this for 9 years of my life now. Its horrible its the depression which comes withnit the feel of isolation i have managed to be more social you have to try and forget the sounds that hurt and it slowly eases off but never fully goes away and always comes back
Can you ignore it now?

I have this problem and it started in NZ, where people rarely moderate the volume of their voice. It is normal here to have loud talks everywhere, not considering if the other person is able to do the work or hold a conversation of their own. Not sure if this problem started or aggravated with me renting with an elderly couple who had hearing problems and would turn on the tv with loudspeakers each night from 7 to 10 pm. It would cause me pain and anxiety. I would run away to the garden or garage, even if cold. Unkind people. Also, some people are just overly loud, and talk too much and too fast saying little. It is not just the problem of sufferers. When I complained about the noise one day, they said it's my problem, until another guy moved in and said he couldn't do work under the noise the other person/manager was making. Yes, it lingers onto the head and neck and even causes stomach pain. Sometimes, a weekend is not enough to recuperate.

I had this car accident in June 2011and there are times when normal sound becomes a bundle of sounds and it causes painful pressure stinging in my skull. For more than 7 years I have used noise cancelling earprotectors when I go to places.
I've had hyperacusis since the age of four as a follow-up of tinnitus but I've learned that isolation is the worst thing you can do if you want to get better
Hi, I was wondering what exactly do you mean by 'isolation'? Do you mean staying in your apartment or spending most free time in a quiet place, escaping sounds?
i need help for this hyparacusis
I suffer from 2 years
I agree 100%. I had a severe case of hyeracusis--it was so bad that I had to put bags of ice on my ears and hold them in place with a scarf wrapped over my head. I wanted to die. I couldn't even stand my own voice. Everyone was telling me to wear ear muffs. I refused. I didn't want to live like that. The pain was horrific, but I didn't wear any ear protection and just tried to avoid loud places without overly isolating myself. If the noise was too loud, I'd just push my lobes over my ear canal. After about 10 months, I noticed it was subsiding little by little, very slowly. I was having more good days than bad. Fast forward nine years and I'm about 95% healed. I've only had two relapses that weren't as bad as when I originally got it. I appreciate life so much more. I'm very lucky.
@@fgfg633 how?
@@melancholia7010 What do you mean, "How?"
This kid will some day not have his parents. I have this too. Earmuffs help a lot for me too but actually hinder our overall healing and ability to adapt and adjust. It’s best to wear a “mask” specifically designed for hyperacusis and tinnitus. We need to expose ourselves to normal daily life noises. I am so overwhelmed. I have tinnitus in my right and hyperacusis in my left. This is so uncomfortable and painful for me and nobody understands my suffering. It’s an issue that nobody can see and if they haven’t had it, they definitely don’t understand.
I have T and H on both but don't wear ear plugs.. How am I supposed to heal? I just take the pain... Kitchen noises, paper, screaming kids, dishes etc etc
Can you tell me more about a mask? I'm trying to help somebody who's living with Hyperacusis , tinnitus, pain and pressure.
I will resort to using not only ear plugs from now on, but also the same kind of head protection that Tom uses. I am very sensitive to noise in one ear, it hurts and it lingers.
I don't care how it looks. My hearing is still pretty good, I am not waiting until I have a punctured ear drum on top of everything else, just because I did not protect that ear.
So, looking ridiculous or not, I will do what has to be done. What other people think really does not concern me, as long as I can save my hearing as much as possible then that is what I will do.
I absolutely hate having this condition. It has been getting worse over the years (almost 50yo now) and I believe that protecting my ears is making it even more worse as I protect from noise most of the waking day.
I am happy to be an introvert though. It's calming to have complete control in my own living space.
and the most horroristic is when you hear a loud sound in the bad frequency more times your hearig will be more painful. & more & more ... So Silence, relaxnig and hear a little pink noise when it not painful. And must have many earplugs for exaple when U live in a flat!!
Running water, dishes banging, puppy barks 😢 My acoustic reflexes (ART) were present and robust ipsilaterally from 500 to 4000Hz for the left ear at 80dB HL 👂🏻😣

I’ve had a case of hyperacusis (with no pain) for several years now. It has mostly been fairly mild. I work as a chef so dishes clanging really sets it off for me. Other irritants include dogs barking, tannoys, unnatural sounding speaker systems and so on. Recently on lockdown it has become much worse, and I think I exacerbated it by wearing ear plugs which in turn made it more sensitive. About four weeks ago it lead to tinnitus which I am still hearing now as a very high frequency pitch which initially was in my left ear (my most sensitive hyperacusis ear) and has moved to more inside my head. This was initially debilitating but i have grown used to it. Through research I learnt that ear plugs can worsen hyperacusis. I have stopped using them and my ears have become less sensitive. However, if i am caught off guard by a dish clanging etc. it is worse for the rest of the day. For example, I was watching a UA-cam music video yesterday and my ear was fluttering the whole way through after doing the dishes, but I tried again and could listen to it today. Speaking on the phone is also an issue even when I hold it to my better ear. Two and a half weeks ago I had an appointment with my doctor over the phone and explained my symptoms and he suggested I had a narrow left eustacian tube which can be exacerbated by fungal spores in the area I live in (he has heard similar stories from other patients before). He prescribed me Mometasone Furoate nasal spray which I have been using at double dose (his direction) ever since which should clear it up in 2-3 weeks. I was fairly doubtful of his diagnosis but continued on. My hyperacusis has become better but I’m sure it is because I have abandoned ear plugs and avoiding noisier environment, and feel I have adjusted to tinnitus. Does anyone else have any similar stories and words of advice? Should I get antidepressants? Does perseverance almost eliminate it? Does tinnitus finally subside or get worse? Please help. Thanks.
Did you figure it out
Yeah, I have a tinnitus after taking a shower (high pitch, water sound), subsides after 10 minutes. When we exagerattes, we blown everything. I used to play a podcast every bath I took, summing bath water fall noise + speaker podcast play louder than waterfall + everyday = abuse of hearing. Recently, I got little sensitive to noise just like you described (dishes clanging, opening old sliding door with particles under the wheel), I have no idea if thats going to subside or get worse, but mine is not aggressive (still lol). I am getting aggressive with others that produce noise and its not worth be aggressive, we can't control others, only ourselves, so keep calm and accept the suffering noise as part of life
To add my comment, I had jaw disorder after my orthodontics treatment which I suffer a lot in my ear/jaw, and along that came that I am a singer, audio engineer, audiophile, I love noise and I hate at the same time.
Did it go away after the nasal treatment

I have this. I also have severe light sensitivity. No sound, no light. Life is grand.
Now that my ear has “healed” from my surgery at the Silverstein Institute I can confirm that the procedure was not worth it. No change in my sound tolerance level now that the swelling has gone down. I have accepted my new reality and just avoid social situations. If I must go out in public I wear ear plugs. The surgery NOT WORTH IT.
Pry wasted a few grand eh
Do you have pain hyperacusis from acoustic trauma? I have a family member who was beside a semi truck when he blew his air horn for 10 seconds. Has hyperacusis, tinnitus, pressure, pain. It's been horrible.
Yeah my hyperacusis resulted from acoustic shock. I lost hearing above 4kHz and have what sounds like a constant dentist drill in my left ear, very loud and difficult to ignore. The pain is like what you feel if you look at the Sun or a bright light. Not physical pain but extreme discomfort. I just had a family reunion and I had to wear hearing protection to be around my people. It was exhausting and difficult but I managed to get through a week of partying. Spent most of the time outside, keeping distance between myself and others so that the sound dissipates. I cannot carry on a conversation if someone is closer than ten feet away. It’s just too loud even with hearing protection. I’m ten years into my ordeal and trying to keep myself as healthy as possible. I was going to drink myself to death but I quit alcohol and I’m not suicidal anymore.
@@earlyaudio4226 I'm so glad you're doing better. Nobody deserves this. I never knew it was a thing until 6 weeks ago. did your tinnitus sound increase when you open mouth and press jaws near trigeminal nerve?

Help i seem to suffer badly from this the past 3 days, could it be migraine?
Miss Nadine possibly...Do you still have it?
You most likely have no clue what the duck you are talking about
See a doctor and try to get help from this first. I would discuss your concern with a hearing specialist and explain to them that you think you have hyperacusis. Do not wear ear muffs and try to avoid dangerous levels of sound. Anything over 85 decibels sustained would be too loud. Google what sounds are roughly 85 decibels to get an idea on wear you can and cannot go. Wearing ear muffs or hearing protection will make the condition worse. Tinnitus retraining therapy, CBT from a counselor, and attempting to continue daily activities are the best treatment. I am a musician. I played electric guitar, bass guitar, and acoustic and I damaged my ears and developed a ton of different ear conditions. I developed severe depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. I was very low but then I looked to meditation which retrained my brain and helped to reduce the suffering. I then ventured out more and forced myself to deal with the pain and discomfort in my ears. After that I started therapies for my ears, played low level acoustic instruments, reduced volume of music (but importantly did not cut out sound. I continued sound.) And things got drastically better very quickly. I no longer suffer from hyperacusis. Its changed my life but I live a full and happy life. Feel free to comment and message me if you have questions on how to cope. It's very easy to have your life back once you understand it.
@@TheHondarider35924 this gives me hope. About 3 weeks ago I plugged up my ears with ear wax or so I thought using Q-tips for the first time in years, then after my hearing evened out but it was just intense ringing and after I avoid loud noises it goes away or becomes less intense but as I expose myself to normal sounds I hear the ringing start again and it persists, sometimes even stings
@@TheHondarider35924 your story very inspiring. I am going through really bad tinnitus and pain and loudness hyperacusis. It's making my life very difficult. How long did it take for you to get better after u started TRT and CBT? Did you get over tinnitus too? Thanks!
I have decided against getting the surgery on my “good” ear because it would kill my high frequency hearing in that ear. I’m beginning to doubt the surgery was worth it. I’m still suffering hyperacusis and it seems now that my ear has healed from the surgery it’s really not much better. The surgery will kill high frequency hearing and I’m still flinching at every little unexpected sound. I’m an audio engineer/ multi instrumentalist and my life has been turned upside down. I have to wear earplugs just to sit at the dinner table. Silverware on dishes, normal conversation, the crinkling sound of a cellophane bag, all too loud to tolerate without ear plugs. I’m fucked.
Universele earplugs don't use to deep let your ears breath and use alcohol for the pain
@@mircoverhelstwho are you endorsing? I see this comment everywhere and ur full of it
@@B-qz9fo hey im just putting my own opinion on this forum.. and which of my comment are u talking about ?
Actually alcohol does work to numb the brain and ease hyperacusis pain, it works in the same region of the brain as does xanax. They are not the answer as they are both horrible and harmful and addictive. The few grand I spent on surgery was wasted but I have spent a lot on other procedures out of desperation. Nothing worked for me. I avoid social situations as much as possible and use noise canceling air pods with pink noise or water sounds like a light rain fall when I have to be around people.
@@mircoverhelst your constantly leaving that comment about that alcohol and earplugs so just wondering why and how does alcohol help? Have u had this ?
Had this with benzodiazepine withdrawal, hyper acute noise. Every song I listened to I ingested every word in a suggestible state. All because of the brain injuries induced with going cold turkey for months. Anything to recover but I had no idea this word came to mind from nowhere, boom its this. Strange phenomena. One of the many symptoms of these evil pills.
Is it permanent or does it happen when coming off them?

Reactive tinnitus, often early signs of hyperacusis. Stay away from loud noises, use in-ear white noise generators to slowly desensitize your auditory system to noise. Takes 6 months-1.5 years.

Hello :) try not to reach out too much for help on the internet. You'll find alot of really negative people who have no idea what they're talking about. There are no treatments that completely cure tinnitus. However, there are MANY things you can do that can help you sound threshold and bring your ears back to normal. Loud noises can bring you right back into hyperacusis so dont think therapy is a cure. It is a treatment. That said, with constant treatment and monitoring and good ear hygiene ( avoiding concerts and loud music ect) you can kick hyperacusis and lead a very normal and VERY happy life. Many doctors and specialist do not know about hyperacusis and will tell you its hopeless. You'll find alot of people on the internet and t.v. telling sad stories about their condition and how it has disabled them. Try to avoid these things ok? It's not healthy and it not the entire story. For every 1 person that says they are helpless there is another out there that went through great lengths to treat hyperacusis and did so successfully. Research and ask an audiologist about tinnitus retraining therapy. Next I would see a counselor or a psychologist and ask about CBT therapy and tell them about your fear associated with your condition. Being counseled is a huge step. Reduce your stress. Stress over hyperacusis can actually make the condition worse and lead to serious anxiety. The thing that helped me most was meditation. It reduced or eliminated suffering associated with tinnitus and hyperacusis and allowed me to push through going outside and having fear with hyperacusis. This ultimately lead to my condition getting better. I have a severe anxiety disorder. I had visual static, hyperacusis, tinnitus or ringing in the ears, dizziness, tingling, and a myriad of other conditions. I became suicidal and very depressed. This was right out of highschool when I was very young. I got no help from my doctors but a psychologist helped me with my anxiety. She did not directly help me but did show me meditation and pointed me in areas that gave me hope. With my newfound hope, I researched and researched until I found way to help myself via audiologists online. I was able to return to life, kick my anxiety, reduce but not eliminate my hyperacusis, and have ultimately moved on to start a family and lead a successful career. I went from being suicidal and not being able to continue life to being the happiest I've ever been even with my myriad of medical issues. It is possible. Not only is it possible, but with support, treatment is likely. Stick in there and stay away from the negative comments. Most people suffering from these conditions have not tried every option and have not meditated and learned to control there thoughts. Meditation was the single biggest help for me. Meditation taught me to change my relationship to my health problems. So rather then feeling fear and dread over my pain with hyperacusis I learned to feel indifferent. I recognized and accepted my hyperacusis and this allowed me to reduce my suffering and start treating it. 10%better, Calm, and Headspace are all fantastic meditation apps. Research research research. Spend hours researching everything I've mentioned. Understand it and apply it to your life. It has changed my life and I've learned to not only live, but to live happily with my health and to lose my anxiety. If you need someone to message let me know. I can walk you through it. I'm not a doctor, I'm a normal guy with a normal career. I cannot cure you. I can however give you free advice on how to get hope back and help you understand how I got off anti-depressants and found ways to treat myself while facing waves of anxiety. Hope this helps :) hang in there. You got this.
Discourteous idiots need to quit whistling in public. No one needs to hear that shit.
@@TheHondarider35924 I think I'm suffering from this or have very close symptoms. I'm a musician and earlier this year I finally got gear to record my music... and then 2020 happened. I still persevered despite it all, and now I have this totally debilitating issue going on with my ears. It started when I tried cleaning out my ears with q-tips (bad idea). I shoved some wax down deep in my right ear and had muffled hearing for a few days, that's when the ringing started. I went back to doctor and she recommended using debrox to remove any earwax blockage. Well I did it a few times at home and I think I over did it. The ringing is intense. So I sought an ENT to check my ears and really give me some direction. Well it's not earwax he said, but it could be TMJ? I doubt it. After I avoided loud sounds the ringing sort of calmed down but as I slowly exposed myself to normal sounds again they were just too loud accompanied with the ringing and now I'm terrified. It's like everything is too loud now, I can't play electric guitar, def not drums, watch movies or even play video games or sing anymore. I'm hoping to god this is temporary

I feel for him as I suffer from this myself. As I understand, the worst thing you can do, is wearing ear muffs or protecting your ears. You have to hear sound to get your brain to get accustomed to it again.
Many clinking, banging sounds of metal or ceramic are very hurtful. Intriguing though, if I’m in the kitchen and clinking or banging, my muscles and nervous system are aware the noise is coming and it doesn’t hurt when I’ve made the noise ?!?
Universele earplugs don't use to deep let your ears breath and use alcohol for the pain
You need time for the nerves and tensor tympani to settle down and recover and the brain to rewire itself. Improvement can take place but it takes a long time (months, even years) and requires almost total silence. Any exposure to noxious noise can cause setbacks and restart the whole process. Progress is slow and fraught.
@@dirtycelinefrenchman So your saying live in quiet?
@@SomethingNew1133 Same... If I get ready for the sound it's not as painful. The close up sudden sounds like plastic bottles, light switches etc hurt
I can understand the need for headphones but it's more of a band-aid like effect for the problem. He needs to stop using them and let his ears relearn how to hear again or the problem will never go away. Like a band-aid it's job is to stop the bleeding, but by stopping the bleeding your causing infection. the real healing happens after you've taken the band-aid off. By wearing the headphones your over protecting your hearing and making the problem worse. I have Hyperacusis but the way I solved it was by forcing myself to go out and hear again with out hearing protection. it does go away and can if you just quit letting the sound get to you. pink noise is a great help for that too. listen to that as much as you can and it helps build up your hearing back to a normal level.

One thing I would recommend you do is find an audiologist not an audio analyst there is a big difference, and with them you can find earplugs and there’s no shame in doing it that cut out certain frequencies of sound that irritate you the most and re-learn to hear normal again. Hello :) there is always ways to help hyperacusis. Doctors rarely understand the condition and even very experienced specialist will dismiss your condition as hopeless. However there are some ear doctors that not only understand hyperacusis but can offer treatment. For those of us, like myself, who do not have access to these doctors, we still have hope. Research tinnitus retraining therapy. If you have a phone or a computer you can do this at home. Your on youtube which means you have access to certain therapies right at home. Research tinnitus retraining therapy and you'll find a huge amount of research on the subject that can assist people with tinnitus, hyperacusis, or both. Things you should avoid while you have hyperacusis would obviously be dangerously loud sounds. That would mean any sound that would be too loud for somebody WITHOUT hyperacusis. If you avoid all noise that causes discomfort or pain you will make the condition worse. The biggest and hardest step is continuing your life dispute the discomfort. It's not easy but literally anybody can do it. I did it and I was very severe. Learn to venture out, learn to do or use forms of tinnitus retraining therapy, dont hide from noise, and try to reduce your anxiety. Anxiety can be reduced from meditation and relaxation. It's a hard road but with research you can recover. I reached remission without the direct help of any ear doctors or specialist. I saw many doctors but none of them could help me and none even tried. I was able to do my own research and found there is help available from many places and I pushed forward and found many successful ways to cope. Don't expect doctors to help you directly. No doctor will give you a pill or a shot and magically cure you. That said, there are doctors that have found treatments and have published their information online and are willing to help people like you. Read, research, and reach out and you will get better. If you low and need somebody to talk to try messaging me or commenting. I'm willing to talk to you about stuff and help out any way I can.

Hi Tom, I have a friend of mine who claims to now have developed Hyperacusis. Now when we all eat together he insists we chew quietly. If anyone makes a sound that's too loud, he instantly gets pissed off, puts his headphones in and listens to thrash metal at full volume...Can people who really have hyperacusis listen to music at deafening levels? also can they play guitar at full volume without any issue? He claims only chewing and heavy breathing effects him, he has a past issue of bring controlling and possessive.
This sounds more like misophonia, which is what I have and directed a documentary about www.quietpleasefilm.com show him the trailer and he'll know if that's him or not.
No you cannot play music or guitar at high levels with Hyperacusis, he has misophonia
The Vegan Bear I had hyperacusis associated misophonia. It came after painful sound intolerance. I was able to play loud sounds but soft sounds enraged me. I think my misophonia was worse than the hyperacusis I had suffered with beforehand. After years of sound therapy my hyperacusis switched over to misophonia. Horrible.
The Vegan Bear I have what I can gather - moderate hyperacusis. I've been sensitive to chewing, doors closing, stuff like that, since I was a child. I'm now 39 and have slowly developed hyperacusis. I think it stems from having really loud sound systems in my cars for about a decade. I can definitely hear things that most people wouldn't even notice, and I hear them loudly. But, I can listen to music in my car or in my ear buds. But, drop a knife on a plate or throw something in a empty dumpster, and the pain is pretty intense, although I'd doesn't last very long. At least not yet. So, I think everyone is probably different.
if he had hyperacusis a loud sound would cause him extreme agony
