As someone who’s like Snufkin this made me tear up. Wanting freedom to explore doesn’t mean we don’t miss the people most important to us when we’re away. This is a beautiful representation of his character and the ending is so cute 🥰.
I love that you showed snufkin grabbing for his bag and then missing, it really shows how excited he is to get back. Even if he loves adventure
It took me so long to actually finish this video because I kept pausing and re winding to look at the images and see the fluidity of the animation, THAT ENDING HURT
Amazing work! I love your art. The dedication you must've had when this took over four months is insane! I love how well it captures Snufkin and Moomin's bittersweet relationship, as well as Snufkin's longing to be both free but somewhat bound to a home, at the same time. 10/10 ❤
Thanks so much :D!! Those four months were worth it if it managed to get the ideas across, we love conflicted characters figuring themselves out hahaha. I'm really glad you loved it X)!
In the show it was always made out that Snufkin was callous just for the sake of it, like he just wants to be free so much that he just sacrifices everything else for it, that's possible but realistically this type of behaviour is more accurate from someone who suffers massive trust issues.
I would know because I behaved very similarly to this for a few years, actively pushed people away, harboured many negative feelings because of it but I do understand why I did it.
I regretted it and one day after a song reminding me of it caused me to cry I realized that being cold hearted isn't for me anymore, I've clearly recovered since then.
It's not easy but eventually you realize that the pain is worth it, it's better to try and risk rain then do nothing the whole time.
Now THIS is a Moomin animatic! Very clear, very precise, very emotionally-driven movement. Great pacing for its story-telling and overall wonderful work!

3:38 - My personal favorite detail! Snufkin missing the bag strap because he was so eager to return to Moomintroll.
Also at 3:50 the change in line color to differentiate past from present is a nice touch!
i really love how you added small clips that happened in both the 2019 and 1990 series, like the part where teety-woo came over to sunfkin to have a little conversation, or when there was little my flowing down the river at 3:54 or snork's flying ship with both snufkin and moomin on it. i also love how you wrote 'cheerio,' at the start of the animation, since that was what snufkin wrote in his letter in the 2019 series, most of parts of the 2019 are at the end of the animatic, i love the details, this was great! thank you for spending 4 months of your time to do this

3:03 I could list a million things about what I love about this animatic, such as the framing, angles, emotions, composition etc. This group shot here captures the characters so well. I really am in love with it all.

I seriously have no words for this. I'm speechless. Usually I would analyse a lot for this kind of animatic, but words fail at this moment. I already knew how much Snufkin meant to me personally, but it's become so clear in as I watched this how much he has to go through in order to reach a place of true, genuine happiness. And his relationship with Moomin is so beautifully illustrated here, with Moomin's constant understanding of Snufkin's needs, and Snufkin's unconditional love for him coupled with his need for personal space, and the casual longing shared with them. You hit every nail on the head with this, I cannot believe this only has 17k views and you only have 393 subs, you deserve so much more. I tip my hat to you.
hey, thanks :D! Yeahh, their relationship is an interesting one given their dynamics and the compromises they're willing to make for each other, so it was a really fun time writing notes and trying to spin it into an animatic :>

This is definitely one of, if not THE, prettiest moomin animatics I've seen on youtube and it captures so much in such a short span of time. There's clear longing and sorrow and love and excitement and all the snippets from old and new stories just ties it all together in a beautiful narrative~
So flippin well made I honestly cannot praise it enough (nor have I said anything that hasn't already been said, but it bares repeating regardless.) You worked hard on this and it shows!! You should be so proud of what u accomplished here~
I've been wondering for a while now why everyone in the fandom got so attached to Snufkin, even back in the 40s. But I think I get it: we all kind of feel like we're drifting, we want to go out and see the world and find ourselves but also to have meaningful connections with people who understand what it is we need, but we also don't really know what exactly we want and when we do, we're aware that it'll come at a price. We see ourselves in the scrungly little guy who leaves when he pleases and stays when he wants.
This animatic is really well-done. The little details (like Snufkin reaching for and missing his backpack on the first try because he's so excited) make my heart so happy.
I've been looking through all your comments (because they're all very wonderful, yall are so sweet :"l) and I noticed some of your comments saying it hurt, and that made me very curious👀
For those who felt hurt, why did this animatic make you sad?

I just came across this, and since no one seemed to have answered this here yet, might as well give my two cents! ^^ (Let's see if I manage to put this stuff into words xD)
For me this video ewokes a rather bitter sweet feeling?
It's becouse of the mix between the lyrics and knowing these characters.
The beginning has this feeling of uncertainty, as if he's questioning if leaving everytime is something he really wants. He clearly missed Moomin during his travels, and with the lyrics it almost suggests him questioning if leaving makes him in some way "bad". Than the realisation that Moomin verry likely loves someone else, so maybe leaving, despite all the struggles on the way, is a method to protect himself from his feelings. That just seems verry sad to me.
But whenever he feels lonely or down, he can remember that there is a place he can come back to, with people that are important for him. Then when spring comes around, there is this pure euphoria about the fact that he can go back now. His reunion with Moomin is so cute, and the flashes of all their adventures are somewhat nostalgic. It's ewokes this short moment of happines.
And then the end roles around.. and Snufkins expression just suggests that he knows time is running out and he will be leaving again soon. Then we get this last interaction with Moomin, and him leaving seems less like something he wants, and more like something he NEEDS to do. Leaving pains him, becouse a part of him wants to stay, but he's leaving non the less. And Moomin acceptd it, becouse at this point that's the only thing he can do. It's sad, and bittersweet, becouse he's leaving again, but leaving also means he will come back in spring.
This howl video and song just paint the picture of a heart vs mind kind of situation, sort of. Where one half wants to stay, and the other wants to go, and returning is the only time both halfs are equaly happy.
But that's obviously just how I interpretated things and how they make me feel xD
Other people might have a completely different view point/reason for why this hurts/makes them sad xD

Bawled like a baby after the ending because not only is this animatic just that powerful, but I wish my life was somewhat like this. I don't really have a support system or friend group so I won't lie, it hurt a bit, but in a way where I was happy for Snufkin. Just made me look at my own life a little bit

Because I like many deeply relate to Snufkin and this animatic captured the emotion and the relationship so well with all of the heartbreak moments and the joys and past memories it feels really nostalgic and at the same time expectant and it just amazing. And because all of it is related to, it feels personal and hurts while being amazing
so happy this fandom exists

Not only did this made my day, it left me emotional!!! Every frame in this video really illustrates the many aspects of Snufkin's life beautifully! This is indeed the best Moomin animatic I've ever seen!!!
oh MY GOD IM GOING TO CRY!!! The perspective of the sequence at 2:00 absolutely blew me away and I just realized this entire thing is 6 minutes long oh MY GOSH?!? All the little character details like 3:40 where he's grabbing for the strap, or at 3:26 with the feather... I think my favorite part though is at 2:50, there's just so much emotion packed into those shots with Snufkin struggling in his travels. The song is also absolutely perfect, I'm shocked that I haven't ever heard it before and it's definitely going in the playlist. I don't even know how to put into words how this made me feel, but I wish I could subscribe twice after this.
ONLY THREE MONTHS? This wouldve taken me years no matter how dedicated i was-
I've seen some really great animatics but this is a whole new level. The expressions, the body language, the little details like Snufkin barely missing his backpack's strap when he takes off running or Moomin's feet pointing to Snufkin when he's with Snorkmaiden, and the cinematic aspect!! The way you use transitions and camera movements is mesmerizing. Just really beautiful overall. Amazing work, thank you 💞

THIS IS PERFECT OH MY GODNCNENCIWIDNWKEUWO i dont know how else to say it im crying when snufkin was rushing back home and the places he was passing through carried memories of their adventures and after he arrived he had even more memories with them urghhhghfjdhcid SO PERFECT...so lovely, i feel this is a mixture of the 90's anime and the 2019 tv show right? SO GOOD...im so emotional woww,,,the way snufkin's relationship with moomin (and everyone)is portrayed and his conflicting feelings...i love this so much😭😭😭 i haven't been super into moomins since 2020, but once in a while i still come back to them so seeing all those episodes i vaguely remember flashing through this animatic made me CRY.

Immense respect for all the directions that i would not expect to see when clicking this the first time, like all the crazy good transitions, that part where snork flew his airship, and when snufkin stumbled while grabbing his bag in a hurry. I can tell you must have had to really get in the mood to visualize, plan, refine, draw and animate all of this. It’s inspiring

It's been a long while since i've travelled into the moominvalley fandom and randomly remembering it I came across this and it's truly beautifully animated. Never seen it like this before.
As someone who kinda kins Snuffkin and dreams of being a traveller, these feelings of being introverted, wanting to have friends yet not wanting to be caged by location nor people, that feeling that home to you is when your exploring but having a familiar place to go to, you've captured that quintessence and love well.

GOOOSH♡♡♡ Ugh I adore this♡ All of the expressions are amazing, and each transition between scenes felt so smooth. Also there were so many little moments that made each character feel so alive (one in particular was when Snuf went to pick up his backpack and missed it the first time.) Those little details make such a diffrence♡

the way you can show motion with still frames is crazy. I adore this, that scene with the bird standing on the branch staring down at snufkin was crazy good. And the hand kiss at the end 😭😭. what a masterpiece.

As someone with wanderlust, this hits home(ha) but in all the right places. The way I see things you have to leave, no matter what, to enjoy what home felt like. Home can be anything, people, nature, a rock you once saw but to truly understand what that word means, you need a little bit of time to yourself. I mainly ask, sure you can have your home with you (like a tent) but is that really home? Each person will have their own experiences and opinions on what home means and thats the thrill, you make your home as you go.
Snufkin has been a big inspiration for me to just do it and for those who also feel this way, i suggest you start small. Monthly or weekly camping will help. You'll soon find a way of doing what you love even if it means having to take a while to get there and thats just fine. Remember:
You'll always have a home to return to at the end of every adventure.

I relate to Snufkin so much, I’m beginning a new chapter in my life and so much as been changing these past few months. I’m longing to explore the wide world on my own but I fear when I’m gone too long if I’ll be forgotten by those I love. This animatic made me cry, the song is so beautiful, you captured Snufkin and Moomintroll’s relationship perfectly. Thank you for making this. It was so relatable and inspiring to me.

OKAY OKAY OKAY I rarely comment but oh my god this has to be one of the best animatics i've seen!! The storytelling,the transitions,the art it's genuinely so amazing!! The time and dedication you've put into this really shows! I just love how you portray the characters emotions and show Snufkin's longing for Moominvalley! :D

oh my god, this is giving me chills. this is one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen??? will type more once i've finished watching and have digested it a little but oh my god this is such a wonderfully done, deeply emotive piece and
okay okay okay just HOLY SHIT-- your understanding of storyboarding is just beyond fantastic, you really just have a very clear and fluid animation/storyboarding style that is really breathtaking to watch in motion. but, beyond that--- this is such a beautiful, earnest, and perfect representation of snufkin. the push-pull of wanderlust and love, avoidance and desire. it's obviously something that comes up in most snufkin-centric art but the details you used to convey it really gave it a depth and a realism. tbh i feel like i *got* it for the first time, like fully *felt* it.
the panic of feeling closed in, mixed with guilt for feeling that way (reinforced by lyrics and visuals, the hesitant glance towards the woods and the lyrics "am i homeless? or just heartless?" and the scenes with teety-woo and the groke as snufkin ruminates on his fear of not being able to love in the way moomin needs, wants, etc. -- the way he clutches his hand at 1:31 was *heartwrenching*-- also, similarly, snufkin's pained expression as snorkmaiden and moomin kiss with "am i loveless? or do i just love less?" oh my godddddddd)
the giddiness of wanderlust, the overwhelming and overflowing joy of this part of snufkin's life-- he wants this, he needs this, and eventually his shame for wanting it starts to give way (the way snufkin skips after leaving the note and properly heading on his journey-- there is such a palpable sense of *relief* and *joy* in his body language, which is also conveyed really well at 1:51 when he overlooks the road ahead of him. it's just really, really nice. because we are all snufkin x moomin shippers i think snufkin's journeys can begin to come across as just "the thing he has to do that causes angst for fics" but it is so, so much more than that. it is freeing, re-centering. he is rarely ever running away from moominvalley, he is running *towards* and GOD when he looks up at the stars and has them reflected back in his eyes??? beautiful beautiful beautiful.)
then the coming home, the realization that he now needs to return just as badly as he needed to leave (the realization and relief as he notices the birds heading back north-- a sort of permission to return, culminating with a growing sense of wanting to return anyhow as shown with "it helps to remember i'm a brick in a wall" with the lovely folks of moominvalley welcoming snufkin in. snufkin fumbling to grab his backpack in his excitement was such a small and brilliant detail! and so was the parallel of snufkin literally looking at the stars and wondering if they are "looking back at him" to the "stars" being visually replaced with moomintroll. and snufkin running back to moominvalley with memories of his friends flashing??? absolutely amazing.)
and then the "cycle" repeating at the end, the soft way snufkin kisses moomin's paw and then the pain and awkwardness on his face after as he asserts his need for distance, confirming that there isn't really a *resolution* to this dynamic. it's bittersweet, but the love is there.
just, wow. deeply inspired and awed as an artist, but beyond that i seriously have chills and am a little teary-eyed. this was beautiful

You brought up some things I hadn't even noticed myself, and the way you worded and described various parts of the work made me appreciate it all over again (especially the part about the "stars" parallel with moomin).

also, final compliment/observation because i have "moomins and attachment theory" brain worms:
i just noticed how moomin, both in the beginning when he looks out the window and at the end after snufkin kisses his paw very *physically* holds his paw to his chest and takes a deep breath to self-regulate
moomin doing the work to regulate his anxious attachment (taking deep breaths, knowing when he has to walk away and learning to be okay with it, fighting the desire to protest and ask for more) and snufkin working on his avoidant attachment (acknowledging the depth of his care and how much he values love + relationships, reaching towards moomin to kiss his paw and better communicating his needs) -- seriously beautiful to see and so realistic, subtle, and important!

From a technical standpoint, this animatic is amazing. The perspectives, transitions, cuts, and the way you can feel the movement of the camera is super impressive. Also ONLY four months?! It's amazing in every other way too, characterization and the feels you're showing. I love Snufkin so much and watching him go through these emotions feels like he's dragging me through it again too, especially with the montage sequence towards the end and the gentle way he takes Moomin's paw. I've replayed the last minute and a half a lot help

I love your art style and shading, it's simple in a way that's really satisfying. The way you portrayed Snufkin's relationship with Moomin and his feelings has made me feel sad but love this story all over again, lovely work that's truly underrated.

You can literally see the amount of love you put into it all. I adored the little details, like Snufkin not catching his backpack the first time and his reflection in the puddle. You're amazing and this is beautiful

I haven't seen much Moominvalley, but the taste I've had informs just enough to be able to enjoy this that much more. It's a wonderful piece in its own right, got me very misty. To spend three months on this it must have been a labor of love, and that love really shines through the work. This was very bittersweet and inspiring, thank you for it!
