What the new tariffs on Canada, Mexico and Canada could mean for Americans

  • President Donald Trump has followed through on his promise of imposing tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China, and Canada has responded with retaliatory tariffs of its own. As CBS News New York's Alecia Reid reports, the president says the taxes will address the flow of illicit drugs across our border, but it could also mean higher gas and grocery prices.

In 1929 and the early 1930s, a trade war escalated during the Great Depression, fueled by the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 in the United States. This act imposed high tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods to protect domestic industries but triggered retaliatory tariffs from other countries, such as Canada, France, and Germany.
The result was a collapse in global trade-U.S. exports fell by 61%, and American international trade shrank by 66% between 1929 and 1934. This deepened the global economic crisis, increased unemployment, and strained international relations, contributing to the political instability that preceded World War II.
This event serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of protectionism.

It’s call competition & if you have alternative market where you can buy these (same) goods not only without tariffs but even cheaper than this is what’s going to happen & the ones with tariffs will loose market share & revenue (profit). It’s not just Canada & Mexico on this planet with products to sell. So Canada for example will have to lower the prices to compete with others & doing so will loose profit (in final outcome) We will see how long Castro can handle it?

Tariffs cause inflation....inflation is a tax. As a Canadian that supported Trump's return with the hopes that it would end the ridiculous wars that have sprung up since Vietnam, I am bewildered. "Canada doesn't treat us very well" Mr Trump says. The fact is, if you remove the energy we supply from the equation, you would find that we actually buy more American goods than we sell into the US. About the energy: We supply around 40% of the oil that goes into American refineries that are designed for heavy oil. The reconfiguration of these refineries is economically unviable, and the US has to export their "sweet" oil because of this. We sell our oil to the US at a 20% discount to world prices; Think about that. "Canada doesn't treat us very well" Yes, Mr Trump, we do and it is we who are subsidizing you, not the other way around as you profess. Additionally, we offer the US energy security that allows them to play their endless war games in the middle east without worrying about another oil embargo as experienced in the 70's. As for the drugs: Last year all the fentanyl that was seized at the border for the entire year would fit into one suitcase and was being smuggled into the US by American citizens. The fact is this has nothing to do with trade, drugs or illegal immigration and everything to do with imperialism. Mr Trump wants Canada and stated such. He openly stated he would use massive economic pressure to get it. I am not opposed to a closer economic relationship with the US but I am strongly opposed to any agreement that exposes our citizens the predatory American medical system or the daily mass shootings that come with all the guns. The credibility loss the US government is experiencing is huge as it stabs its closest ally and largest trading partner in back on the world stage. Moreover, this move by the US is a breach of the free trade agreement Mr Trump negotiated and signed himself, and this is for the second time. The free trade agreement was negotiated in good faith and this breach will end up in front of a judge someday. I'm sure it won't mean anything and the US won't accept the verdict. Canada needs to build more pipelines to the sea starting today, not tomorrow or the next day: TODAY. We need seek business with countries that aren't at war with themselves where, every four years the political polar shift evokes economic schizophrenia. We need to outlaw US NGO's from paying protesters of every type inside our borders that seek to prevent or delay these initiatives. Although, if an initiative looked viable I would expect a big push to bring "Freedom and Democracy" to Canada bringing with it, everything this narrative has brought to so many other countries around the world. True were the words of Henry Kissinger, "It may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal."

    2. Less Canadians will cross border shop in the US which means our money will stay home & border towns in the US will suffer & business' will close, creating unemployment.

Once Canada stops relying on the USA as their #1 buyer of all of their natural resources, and starts shipping to Asia & Europe, it'll become more economically stronger. The USA will no longer receive Canada's gas at a discount, and start paying the going International rate, and Canada will finally wake up & realize that its dependancy on the USA as a buyer, was inevitably going to change. Canada had to learn this lesson the hard way in order for it to wake up & realize that the USA would always treat it as a punching bag, and always take it for granted. Canada has the most clean natural resources in the world, and should be richer than it currently is....if only they had a smarter leader in power.

What's not part of these tariffs is the various provinces removing all alcohol made in "red" states and not buying any. Our alcohol is regulated by the provinces.
Governments big and small are buying Canadian, those are outside of the costs of the tariffs too.
Canadians are already buying our own products, food, and we're going to buy fruits, vegetables and other goods from Mexico and Europe.
We do have trade agreements with Mexico and Europe.
Canadians are polite, respectful UNTIL we're NOT 🇨🇦.
We don't need, want or like this but we're together.
