Thanks dude! Had been a few years since I did one of these, so this was a great refresher. The whole deal barely took an hour. FYI (everyone reading this) I removed the swaybar link from the swaybar end by jacking up the knuckle to relieve the tension. Made getting the shaft in and out a complete breeze. Anti seize the teeth on the wheel end of the shaft too. You'll thank yourself if you ever have to re-replace it.

Also guys, if you think the front CV axle is bad, to confirm, remove the transfer case fuse (fuse 13 in glove box) and see if the vibration goes away. It’ll be easier and less risky than to unplug the actual transfer case connector.

Did your cv axle slide into the transfer case easily? And did you use an aftermarket cv axle or oem one? I bought a napa aftermarket cv axle and I had no trouble taking the old axle out but when I put the new axle in it wouldn't go the rest of the 1 ish inch more so I beat the shit out of it and I knew the splines were lined up because I could turn it and it was engaged with the transfer case but that little c clip that the cv axle has on the end of it was hung up, i searched online and other people said aftermarket ones are junk and its happened to some people. Now my cv axle won't COME BACK OUT and ive beat the shit out of it with a 4lb hammer and a slide hammer now its stuck in my transfer case.

Sheesh that sounds like a nightmare. To be honest I dont remember how easy it went in.. im pretty sure i just bought an aftermarket off of Amazon if my memory is right...usually what I do is get it started and then once it gets to the circlip I apply steady pressure with one hand (to compress the CV) then with the other i hit the shaft (where you thread the axle nut on) with a 4lb dead blow and usually it goes right in with 1 or 2 hits. If you dont apply steady pressure to compress the CV you will never get it in.
If you're trying to get it back out your gonna have to use a large pry bar.. not sure if they make a pickle fork type tool to fit around the axle.. im sure the dealership has a special tool..
Sorry to hear of your troubles.. hope you can get it figured out

@@DecosGarage I did finally get it out the aftermarket cv axles are OK, it’s just that c clip is absolute junk it is oversized and nothing like the oem c clip. If you buy a aftermarket cv axle go to the dealer and grab a c clip for it it’s litteraly $3 and will save you a world of headaches. It slid right in with the oem c clip

Fuck I have a similar problem...2010 535i xdrive bad shimmy on steering wheel but when I removed the front driveshaft all shimmy went away.....could it be. ....front differential or front axles

    • @DecosGarage

I would start with the axles as they're much cheaper
