As the new year unfolds, I'm nestled in my blanket, observing this tender moment. The absence of profound love has been a constant in my life for years. Still, as I watch Harry and Sally, I can't help but crave the possibility that someday, in a future new year, I might experience a love as deep and genuine as theirs
3:34 "...when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible" that line is a classic!! classic movie hands down.
Best romantic comedy ever! Thanks big time for this last scene :) I recorded this movie yesterday on TV and the last 2 minutes weren't on there. Don't you just hate that. But thanks again!
Exactly 'chatterbox1229' well said. Also, the other fact I like about the movie is the coincidence that they keep bumping into each other over time - it's fate and then they finally become inseparable as friends. After being friends for only so long they realise that they are meant for each other only because they know each other so well and more importantly love each without even knowing it.
Annie Hall and this are just the best Romantic Comedies ever. It's like they're siblings or something. I get the impression that Annie Hall influenced this movie a great deal. This is how to make a RomCom!
One of my favorite films, I love these 2 caracters and also the songs in the film. What a pitty that they aren't on the soundtrack, only cover-versions.I was so enbased after buying it!
Really great script from Nora Ephron. And this is Frank singing It Had to be You......check the end credits! By far the best thing that Billy Crystal ever did.And Meg Ryan was also never better or more gorgeous!
Ah... that's interesting to know. Wonder what it would have been like with a different ending... The ending it has is pretty iconic, and avoids being too cheesy by Sally saying "I hate you.." rather than 'I love you".
Yup, you're quite right then, the characters are similar too Sally cf. Annie (optimistic )/ Alvy cf. Sally (depressive) I just read that Reiner was initially gonna end the story with their sex ruining the relationship up. The final "happily ever after" ending was the script writer's idea. That changed the whole premise of the film and the purpose of the techniques used.
Nope it's Frank Sinatra. Yes Harry Connick Jr did the soundtrack but if you listen to the movie they have different artists like Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald in the background. I've even watched it with the director's commentary and they said they chose Sinatra instead of HCJ because it seemed like for Harry's character when he realizes he's in love he would hear Ol' Blue Eyes.
@Vinco I understand that. What I don't understand is that at the end of the movie they say they knew each other for 12 years and 3 months before getting married. If they were 22 when they graduated, she would have been 34 not 32. It's a little detail that wouldn't have slipped past a Billy Wilder or a Preston Sturges. Nora Efron and Rob Reiner are usually pretty savy so I just wonder about that detail in terms of scripting.
From Spain... me encanta esta pelicula y,sobre todo, el final. Aunque en España la cuenta atrás para el año nuevo lo hubieramos hecho comiendo las 12 uvas. Feliz año nuevo!!
@8foothole I do enjoy the movie and have watched it a number of times. It's just a little thing I noticed the second or third time. No big deal and not a criticism, just a whimsical comment Did you mean to put a comma between movie and j-koff?
i know it's typical of a newly enlightened college student, but I watched this for a course in romantic myths in film. By going the same places that Annie Hall went as far as story (and even cinematic devices like talking directly to the camera, split screen, etc), WHMS was actually a sort of remake of Annie Hall. It sought to re-establish the old formula for a good romantic comedy. Rather than defy tradition like Woody Allen did, WHMS reestablishes it.
It's possible. I haven't seen the whole film since I wrote that comment. I do expect to pay attention to that aspect next time. What may be an assumption on my part is that she moves to New York upon graduation. I now remember Harry is going to call his girl friend, Sally's roommate. So maybe it is summer vacation for him but she's leaving U of Chicago to pursue a career without having the degree.
Yeah, the stories are very different, but the feel of the movies is very similar. I think it's the script that I find very similar- lots of intelligent witty dialogue, and that's the thing that carries both films. Obviously they're both heavily set in New York, and both have a certain 'Jewish' perspective (Allen, Reiner, and Crystal are all from Jewish families). Plus the cinematography is similar: lots of static shots where the characters are small and move across the scene etc.
Here is a perfect example: compare and contrast! Search youtube for "Final Scene from Woody Allen's Annie Hall" by jlgodard and see how similar the two are (I don't mean the story, I mean the editing etc.)
I do love this movie and the ending. But I always notice that when Sally says she's almost 40 the night that Harry comes over to comfort her, it turns out she's 32. Now if it took them 12 years and 3 months to get married than they would both have been 20 when they graduated from U of Chicago. That never spoils the movie for me but someone should have done the math.
nope it is the one and only Frank Sinatra. when the scene ends and goes into the credits then its harry connick Jr. but during the scene its all Frank.
It's a rare thing when a rom-com appeals to both men and women equally, but this one pulls it off flawlessly.

Still, as I watch Harry and Sally, I can't help but crave the possibility that someday, in a future new year, I might experience a love as deep and genuine as theirs
I know how you feel...
I loved this movie from the first time I saw it. Meg and Billy had unbelievable chemistry and the supporting cast was incredible.
A perfect ending to an intelligent Rom-Com. Adults genuinely in love are wonderfully childish in a very nice way, as this film amply illustrates.
Watching this in 2024 and all the comments from 15 years ago are making me nostalgic
One of the great romantic endings of all time with Sinatra singing in the background. Doesn't get much better than that.
I'm 45 years now. This is still the best movie I have ever seen.
The best ending to a movie ever! I've watched this movie so many times and I still get tears in my eyes when I watch it. :)
Never have I been in love with a love story like this one. This movie is an all time favorite.
Yes, this was a rare and memorable movie. Nora Ephron was a brilliant writer!
3:34 "...when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible" that line is a classic!! classic movie hands down.

Great screenplay and
dialogue from Nora Ephron
It's rare when a romantic movie appeals to both sides of humanity.
It Had To Be You is sung by Harry Connick jr. He sings all the songs used in this film.
What an ending. RIP Nora Ephron.
she’s great
some very real moments
and the story is capturing Life
to a T‼️
Such a great ending. What Harry says at the beginning is soo true. I've come to realize this more and more.
the best ending ever with that great song by Sinatra....thanks so much for posting it
it's so cute how she says I really hate you with tears in her eyes and then can't help hersef and kisses him.
Such a nice ending
Laughter through tears, everytime. RIP, Nora.
this ending always makes me cry, just because it makes me so happy!! can't even explain it
Watching this clip made my day. Thank you
At 3:35, that is the best line I've ever heard! One of my favorite movies. Thanks for posting.
Happy New Year... yeah... we just "turned" into 2009 :)
and.. THIS is the best New Years "I love you" movie EVER!!! :)
What a coincidence I decided to finally watch this movie on New Year's day
GAHHHHHH. i just LOVE this moment. i cant even put it into words. loll just soo friggen perfect.
Exactly 'chatterbox1229' well said.

I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich
This movie inspired me to propose to the love of my life. I even sang “It Had To Be You” when I presented the ring to her.
One of my favourite endings ever!

The best romantic comedy ever, period!
My dad is one of the extras in this scene where they're zooming out on their kiss toward the very end
A good choice on their part.
Sinatra's voice is unmistakable here.
Really great script from Nora Ephron. And this is Frank singing It Had to be You......check the end credits! By far the best thing that Billy Crystal ever did.And Meg Ryan was also never better or more gorgeous!

Billy Crystal's finest moment
Aliada; I agree! I really agree - absolutely fantastic!
this is def my favorite romantic comedy :)
gotta love rob reiner and billy crystal!
Best pronunciation of love ever.
Miss you so much already, Nora.
My favourite ending too of all time !!!
I had to watch this on New Year's Eve
I love how when Harry was breathing hard from running, his breath was taken away when he saw Sally at 2:28 :)
Yup, you're quite right then, the characters are similar too
Sally cf. Annie (optimistic )/ Alvy cf. Sally (depressive)

me too, almost flawlessly, sometimes say 72 degrees instead of 71 lol
I absolutely adore this movie.
What harry is saying in the beginning about men and women not being able to be friends is sooo true. haha
WHOA the mustache dude is Nicky from Donnie Brasco

Harry Connick Jr (not Frank Sintatra as stated above)
Well worth checking out Harry, he's done a full jazz version too & loads of other great stuff
I agree. Well explained.
ハリーは面白いから女性に好まれる。ノラエフロンも言っていたけれど、ある程度の年齢になると主義とかルックスとかより笑わせてくれる人が心地良くて良くなると。正解だな、この映画は正しい、楽しい、魅力的。
OMg.. some fuckin movies change our lives..
rest in peace nora ephron
@Chookie369 It's an older movie, so to be fair you could get it really cheap from amazon if you love it a lot :)
I know she said "I hate you" 3 times to him but the last one really felt like "I love you" instead.
Adorable! What is the title of the song at 3:30 minutes?
Thanks Nora
I LOVE THIS MOVIE
Love this film!
The song is "It Had To Be You" sung by Frank Sinatra.

to some not-so-nice-place with WMG!
RIP Nora Ephron
It's definitely Harry Connick Jr, ps, he did that whole soundtrack :)
Happy new years eve to you all!!! :D
The use of old traditional pop u mean?
The premise of the two films are so different.
I adore both though.

Pass the tissue....love this movie.
Love this movie!
@rossharmonics that she's scared she'll be 40 when she's actually 32 is the joke. i'm pretty sure that harry mentions that.
Thanks! :)
nope, it's Frank for sure. can't mistaken that voice.
nope it is the one and only Frank Sinatra. when the scene ends and goes into the credits then its harry connick Jr. but during the scene its all Frank.
