Ray Owen was an incredible front man. I saw them with this line up at Mothers Club in Erdington, Birmingham round about 1970. Ray was all over the place, jumping around in the crowd, smacking his mike against the stage (it was a tiny club) and generally egging the band on to a great performance. His vocals were superb. Glen Fernando Campbell was on fire. I’ve never forgotten this gig, it was that good. Shame they let him go.
@@jonmeacham77 it was above an old furniture shop down an alleyway on Erdington High Street. It was only open from 1968 to 1971 unfortunately but hosted some of the world’s top bands. Hard to believe looking back because it really was a tiny club but had an incredible reputation. My guess is that the bands that they were hosting simply outgrew the place. Remember seeing Colosseum there. Also Deep Purple, Family, Genesis, Atomic Rooster (with Carl Palmer), Stone The Crows, Rare Bird, Edgar Broughton Band to name a few. Pink Floyd recorded part of Ummagumma there too.
@@yesman2755 Ah ok, Wow! Sounds brilliant, a bit before my time I can just about remember the Acorn on the High Street along with The Queens Head and 'The Chelsea Bar' round the corner, sounds like your day's where much more memorable. 👍
Thank you very much for download and the story. Always nice to see Ray singing live and lambent Glenn Campbell in action. Great line-up and unforgotten version of the song!
An amazing find! Thank God for Hits a Go Go! This is something I thought id never see! This; plus Black Sabbath; king Crimson; Status Quo; The Who; Jethro Tull; Mungo Jerry and lots of other lesser known but fascinating performances; that have turned up from 1969/1970 as TOTP inserts on Hits a Go Go, has really made my day! Thanks for posting!
Martin. Another German pop show `Disco` which began at start of 1971 also screened TOTP clips. One of the most unusual is a TOTP 1972 appearance of Uriah Heep performing `Wizard`

MIKE - this is not from 26.03.70 it is actually from 12.02.70 show as the 26.03.70 performance of Who Do You Love was a Comedy Video from Pan's People and Jimmy Savile (Benny Hill Style) which is recorded as "Lost" by the BBC But i have a short 10/15 sec clip
Most of these facts are crap Ray was the last member to join and was outed in two months and if you wan't proof check out the film Bread with paul williams on vocals Feb 1971 playing with the misunderstood is crap yes it is rumored he played Bass, Also he only got the job because they were complete but where desperate for a singer and Hubbard had been in the studio and had heard Ray so he put his name forward and Ray was in but a few months later he was out. +sue harmes of course it is the original singer! ray joined the misunderstood on bass and then when that band became juicy lucy he switched to vocals. paul williams replaced him as he was fired a day after this performance for refusing to mime and thus became the first person to insist on singing live on TOTP. there is a thumbs down because of a complete twat in england who used to be in a group with ray and cant handle the fact that ray has talent and he has none!
+Mike Raphone you're right completely. No doubt, Ray was the first original singer with Juicy Lucy. Even Glenn Campbell and Neil Hubbard can confirm that if it needs. Sorry, there is just one correction - Ray joined The Misunderstood on rhythm guitar originally, because Davy O'List (former The Nice guitarist played bass) and he took over bass duties after that incident when Davy threw his bass and walked off stage in the middle of the gig. It was just before The Misunderstood death and Juicy Lucy birth. Mike Stax of Ugly Things magazine can confirm that. Maybe Davy himself could also confirm that. By the way Ray, Neil and Davy still play live in London/south England rock stage circuit. It worth every penny (or rouble)! Even Glenn Campbell did his comeback to London scene last year. Unforgotten! Moreover people have a chance to see Ray Owen's Juicy Lucy sometimes in Europe. So you have a chance to see their fantastic gigs, Mike and enjoy blistering version of 'Who Do You Love' with the original singer!!!
link some examples? maybe they did but according to history online i can find it was the 90s that went full swing into live performances. point is that he disobeyed the order to mime....
Back at a distant time when music was actually exciting. And this WAS the original lead singer, Ray Owen.
Well it's a smorgasbord really, we're all different & I like all sorts & hate all sorts.

More like the slide guitar was the front man really. They're Brits? Thought they seemed made in America.

Ray Owen is a criminally underrated frontman, he just screams rock n roll
Underrated but not criminally, I'd say
Ray got sacked after top of the pops cos he refused to mime on TV, would only do it live.
