      'Classic Rock' idiom is so tiring. 'I am into blues' No, you are into Janis, LZ and Bonomassa and too conservative to listen to anything else. Even making fun of the real deal. It's the same thing with 'the progressive 60's & 70's' and all boomers now. Pardon for the politics and the limited English. I am so fed up with the Doors.

    I was about 17 when this came out. I loved this band. I was considered out on the edge of music taste, by my friends. They only listened to Zep and the Beatles and the Who, which are great bands but, I like something different. I still dig it. Listen to them all the time.

    Today, the 21st of September 2020, was the ninth anniversary, of the decease of John Cann.
    I decided, last year, that I would visit his grave this year, to acknowledge his life and his music.
    I am sad to say, that I only discovered the music of Atomic Rooster (and Andromeda) in the last two years - and would have been slightly too young, in any case, to have appreciated them, around the time of their early-seventies peak. He is buried at Greenacres, a woodland burial site, at Colney, near Norwich.
    There are no (stone) headstones, nor graves in rows; only small wooden plaques, or small wooden sculptures, and the graves are simply here and there, within mature woodland, which slopes, over a distance of approximately a mile, to a lake at the foot of the wooded valley. It is a beautiful location, alive with birdsong, quintessentially English and lends itself to quiet contemplation. I spent an hour, simply walking around, before I went to Cann's burial. It was a lovely day - the woodland doing its utmost to deny the reality of Autumn. His is a simple wooden plaque, with a depiction, at the top, of the sun, when used as a heraldic charge: often called 'the sun in splendour', or 'the sun in his glory' - a round disc, with the features of a human face, surrounded by sixteen rays, alternating wavy and straight, to represent the light and heat of the sun, respectively. Cann's full name and his dates of birth/decease follow, with his stage name of John Du Cann, below these. He is described as: 'son, guitarist, musician, friend'. Finally, there is the first line of "Devil's Answer" - 'People are looking, but they don't know what to do'.
    The park was very quiet; over some two hours, I saw precisely four other people, in total, all across the site, which covers many acres of woodland. Only when it was clear that I would be no intrusion, did I spend a few minutes at his graveside. There were fresh flowers beside his plaque, which did my heart good to see - no plastic, no ribbon, no card, as per the the site's guidelines to keep the woodland as it should be. I do not believe in organised religion - quite the opposite - and this site is evidently for, or very much aligned to, people of that mindset. I brought a pint glass with me; I sat and drank a pint of Doom Bar to his memory, and that of Vincent Crane, thanking them for the music still enjoyed and thinking some good thoughts.

    • @johnreeves6286
      @johnreeves6286 3 роки тому +1

      Thank you in turn, Vic.
      The woodland park, where Cann is buried, seems to be run mainly, if not exclusively, on humanist/pagan lines - which I assume (and hope) chimed with Cann's own beliefs and spiritual outlook. Amongst the sculptures and plaques, the pagan 'Green Man' and 'the sun in splendour' were both very much in evidence - and of course, many of the wooden grave markers, whether plaque or sculpture, were themselves no longer legible and in the active process of returning to the earth - to my mind, entirely as should be - and entirely in keeping with the overall ethos of the park and those buried there. Cann is, quite literally, in a better place - and no less alive, while his music endures. Best wishes to you, from Hertfordshire.

Like' magprob' who has posted, I too with a couple of friends in my age group, were out on a limb musically. The vast majority were into Desmond Dekker, Bay City Rollers, Ska etc.....it was Suedeheads/Skinheads/Smoothies vs us 'Hairies' and our largely older friends who guided us. Our venue catered for both ....the big hall for the pop type sounds and 'The Cage' for us 'weirdoes'.....a small room, withe the aroma of Patchouli Oil, covered in comfortable thick mats where we'd lounge around/freak out listening to the likes of Atomic Rooster, Yes, Edgar Broughton Band Black Sabbath, Deep Purple et al and also Kraut Rock such as Can....happy days!!

    shortly after this Crane and the management fired Hammond and Du Cann -- and Atomic Rooster's fortunes dropped like a stone. Yeah, get rid of your prime songwriter at the top of your success - that's BRILLIANT. Crane later had psychiatric problems and died almost penniless. DEATH WALKS BEHIND YOU and the album with Carl Palmer are their best - by far.

    Sadly radio today is all about making money and saving money rather entertaining us with long lost classics like this, so it is cheaper for them if they just play rock drivel like Summer Of '69 and Hotel California a million times a day - Fact.
